Speed Limiters & Mega Carriers: Are They Trying To Bankrupt Small Carriers? 

I don't see enough people talking about the biggest problem with speed limiters. Every truck will go the same speed, until there's a hill. Then the lighter truck tries to pass the heavier truck. They get side by side, then the hill levels out. Neither driver will let the other pass. The road rage and resulting accidents will be catastrophic.

It has nothing to do with safety ,and everything to do money and control...

I'd say the FMCSA has been making the roads less safe for years now, so this is no surprise

Mega Carriers want want want, but never give. If they want all trucks to be speed limited, I want them to not be self insured.

Government was supposed to stop monopolies but instead help create them.

Back in the 90's, when the speed limits went up, Oklahoma sent letters to all of the mega carriers of that time to turn their trucks up or keep them off of the Will Roger's turnpike.

If they really want safety. Let start by stopping spending our taxes on thousands of fancy and ridiculously expensive weigh stations and FIX THE ROADS. All regulations are on the carriers. But they allow shippers to give you a late fee. That makes drivers run harder to arrive on time. It doesn't surprise me that other countries like China, Russia or Mexico move to the front of the line in economic terms. I have noticed that these governed trucks will speed through construction zones and through small towns. I guess they think they're making up for lost time making them more dangerous

Mega carriers have speed limiters not because they care about safety. They care about Mega Fuel Saving because they have mega fleet.

They have been talking about speed limiters ever since I got into trucking 30 years ago. They're talking about this 30 more years from now,they won't do anything. I live in Ohio, and they have problems with people doing way over 100 mph in cars. There is nothing about safety. It's all about money and power. Cars 100+ semi 65 or 68= road rage,accidents, and anything else I miss

It's nightmare in Canada for the last 4 years, company and Owner Operators. All going 65 mph but 104 km.

It's not about the speed, it's about selling another electronic device in your truck and making money off it.

Oh, and yes they are trying to eliminate owner operators. What happens is that drivers get fed up with the low pay and the on slot of busy work they face after they're driving day is over. If they can pull together enough money they buy there own equipment leaving the BS of the mega carriers behind. But then they're confronted by the FMCSA which is actually controlled by the mega carriers. 😮😢😂

They have to leave truckers alone. Small car drivers can smoke weed and drive,drink and drive. Who works is always wrong.

The reason of so many accidents is not the speed limit . It's actually the fact that this company hire very unexperienced drivers .

I really think the FMCSA should focus more on truck parking and getting companies involved get drivers that understand English and a lot of Canada drivers don’t hardly understand our language because they are hired foreigners and they they use them for cheap labor. Basically the mega carriers want to even the playing field. 1st, they wanted they want speed limiters because us O/O's can do they speed limit or faster. That's also why they want pre emission trucks off the road because they can't be wired.

I do think the push for speed limiters by mega fleets is for nefarious reasons, and I also agree that lowering the speed of trucks is dangerous. As a driver who currently works for a company that has speed limiters I encounter angry car drivers who don’t have patience for how long it takes to pass another trucker.

It's more pressure by the big guys. It takes an edge away from those carriers less constrained while also increasing their expenses, making it easier for the big guys to grab more lanes. Safety first but I don't think the big guys and their paid lobbyists are worried about that in this situation.

Thats because those major carriers hire people that are clueluss in truckin , and they fill those positions just ro run their trucks. And yes mega carriers want speed limiters because they can switch atrailer and kook up to another truck that has fresh hours and continue mocing the load ro its destination while some1 that has 1 truck and trailer has to do 10 or 8 hrs of sleep time, therefore delaying the load more.

Let's not forget they want a way to transmit everything about the truck and driver to Port of entries. Hours of service, speed, person itself, everything they can get they want to be transmitted as you drive by. That's why I half the time when you drive by a closed scale but you still have to go in it's so they can document truck and trailer.

I am an owner operator who first reduced my speed down to 58 and has since reduced it even further down to 54-55mph so I have first-hand experience with this and have thought a lot about it. 1. The mega carriers primarily want reduced speeds to reduce the risk of catastrophic accidents and the nuclear financial verdicts these accidents cause. But the impact of the speed limiters on us small carriers could be a nice secondary benefit for them. 2. Driving slowly has trade offs and I have witnessed both sides. I attribute my slower speed to having less damage recently when I hit a deer. I also partly attribute my slower speed to having a drunk driver crash into me. Also, the road rage thing is real and I often have angry truckers lay on the horn as they pass or four wheelers cut over extremely close as they pass. 3. I do mostly live loads so the slow speed doesn't really affect my revenue. However, I can see it being an issue for leased on owner operators that have the option for a lot of drop and hooks.

Tires have speed ratings. These are not recommendations. These are speeds that if maintained can lead to catastrophic failure due to overheating. No truck tires that I am aware of that are class eight are rated higher than 75. because of that my Kenworth dealer cannot raise my maximum speed above 75 miles an hour in my truck. With the striking down of Chevron, I’m curious to know if any of this would stand anyway .

I thought the speed limit sign was a speed limiter. Also the regulatory state has been losing cases in the Supreme Court, so maybe they will slow down on making rules that have no business making lol

You shouldn’t apologise for anything You are doing a favour to everyone who is watching you. People or business MUST be responsible for their actions and decisions for themselves and not driven by someone else’s facts,posting etc. You are doing just more than fine and deserve at least a thank you. $100 million Dollar Lawsuits don't help. First trucks then eventually 4 wheelers will get speed limiters.

You mentioned Bison, I worked them from 2006-2012 and if ever there was a company that is in LINE to buy a fleet of self-driving trucks to replace the driver, it's Bison. Every year but one I received a safe driving award with them, yet I had to leave because of the constant harassment one a nearly monthly basis because of the monitoring system they have in the truck telling them that I am an unsafe driver. Fast forward to 2020 when I sem-retired from my last company guess what....Accident free. Glory To GOD! FYI The year I missed out on the safe driving award was because I was attempting to do a very shape exit from a companies yard and the turn I had to execute was so sharp the fairing at the back of the sleeper touched the trailer, it's made of fiberglass. When it touch the trailer it exployed.

Anyone else ever notice how the speed limit in Utah is 80+ mph and I literally have never seen a single accident. I know they have them but I’ve never seen one. I live in Oregon/Washington and see multiple accidents daily and speed limit if 15-20mph lower than Utah.

5 mph 10 hour day 50 miles a day. 3 dollars mile, 150 a day lost. X 10 days 1500. X 3,000,000 trucks a day. They are shooting themselves in the head with potential lost taxable revenue. Let freedom rule. Restricted lanes always 100% more congestion than needs be. The war on the trucking industry must stop.

My question is what about older trucks that don’t have ecu’s on their engines and which make it impossible to able to limit them , would they be force to decommission those trucks?

Good questions! Few years ago worked/drove for a speed limited company only because they were paying 50% more than anyone else around here! Unsafe! Always in that pack waiting for the pileup. O/O now and so much safer to see a little road ahead instead of a pair of “swingin’ doors” perpetually in your face!

The insurance companies are lowering premiums for companies who have speed limiters

I live in the west. On many roads here the limit is 80 mph. It is maddening when a truck is trying to pass another but can’t pass for long distances. So you have two trucks side by side blocking traffic for miles. This is just ridiculous. Let the drivers pass with some power and in a reasonable distance. Grrr.

I drove a 2007 Freightliner Columbia from 4/13/07 to 4/25/11. It was electronically limited to 68 Mph from April 07 til 9/20/09 and during that time my average weekly fuel economy was 7.75 Mpg. The truck was casterated to 63 Mph in September 09 and returned a more erratic weekly fuel economy that was 6.7 to 7.1 Mpg. The idea that economy or safety is increased with speed limiting trucks below 75 is absolute rubbish. I have seen more tailgating by truck drivers since the automated transmissions and CMS systems started being used in trucks.

I have a question? So what happens to the HotShot pick up trucks? I personally have had conversations with a trucking company that bought a bunch of smaller flat beds for there semi’s. I often wondered. If they want to rid the road ways of the ever popular Hot Shot market. Remember it wasn’t long ago most of them were non CDL. Food for thought.

Currently J.B. Hunt has no speed limiter for ICs. They just want you to be safe reasonably so.

FMCSA will just keep delaying and taking. I don’t believe it will happen. And if it does happen, all you have to do is grab a tuner or truck scanner diagnostic tool and turn up the truck, and technically if there are no signs that say truck speed limit you will not be breaking any law for doing the speed limit.

For sure, they want to push out the smaller fish out of the tank. It is unfortunate, but in the market economy is like that.:( So the most adoptive and creative will survive. There are plenty of ways to go around this speed limiters, I don’t think that it should be so concerning. What should be concerning in my opinion is the AI, the self-driving trucks. Maybe it will be great for small carriers, but maybe not. It is still hard for me to believe that they will let them out without a driver completely. I think it is possible, however there should be a change in infrastructure. Maybe this is a great idea to discuss in another video, if you haven’t done it already. Maybe I missed it idk. Yes, I do strongly. Agree with you. The mega carriers are trying to foil small businesses There should be regulations and walls against this type of activity . And be able to work safely without the meddling of other corporations and mega carriers, they should not be allowed to decide anything that affects someone else on a massive scale. That doesn't make any sense. There should be laws in place to regulate these people. Or the non elect from pushing anything without everyone, that's a truck driver gets a chance to vote.

FMCSA doesn't have the authority to require manufacturers to place speed limiters in new trucks, the Supreme Court recently ruled that NO bureaucratic agency has the authority to make rules that are essentially laws. That is the responsibility of Congress not bureaucratic agencies and thats why the ATF is so vehemently fighting the over turning of their pistol brace ruling.

The recklessness of being able to go unlimited on the highway has become a danger to the other drivers on the road. It’s too bad it has a negative affect on business owners but I’m all for the speed limiters. I even wish all vehicles on the road were mandated to get drivers assist where it’s impossible to tailgate too closely to other vehicles

The plot is set up pretty simple. Mega carriers are at risk of loosing volume within the industry. Once they push to get speed limiters on ALL trucks, then the next move is the insurance companies will now have the leverage they need to sky-rocket insurance rates (because speed limiters would now be Federal), thus pricing small businesses out of the market…….think Covid, while the mega companies stayed open, small businesses were ‘regulated’ out of business and many closed. I see absolutely no good reason why a mega company that is self-insured would have a problem with a small business’s truck…unless bankrupting the competition.

Although my old 1999 Century (with reefer) can go as fast as I want (up to around 90 mph), about 98% of my driving speed is usually cruise controlled at 57-61 mph depending on how much in a hurry I am. I am doing that for the last 14-15 years and it saved me probably close or around to $100,000 only on fuel. Additional big savings on tires, maintenance, speeding tickets and whatnot. Don't care about the others, but I am totally against limiting the speed of my truck...I do want to keep the freedom of driving up to 90 mph if I need to or feel like doing it on some rare occasions though.

Keep in mind that if they choose 68mph, that's just the beginning. Once the rule is passed they can lower and lower.

OOIDA Should take fmcsa to court since the speed limiting devices rule is against the free market and we already have speed limiting signs in every states....

I was a paramedic for 19 years prior to driving a semi. In 2 major metropolitan areas and several rural areas with significant highways running through our coverage area. Of the hundreds of MVAs I’ve seen in my life. A significantly small minority involved semi trucks. Of those, a fraction were from over speed events outside of inclement weather. Nearly every accident involving a semi occurred in parking lots, during backing events, or lane changes in heavy traffic. UNLESS the roads are wet or frozen, “over speed” is a non sequitur in terms of safety. Period.

Mega Carriers have been trying to break O/O and small companies for the 35 years I've been in the business. I think it's time to confront the ATA head on, as well as their members.

I agree with you your last couple of statements, but the thing is we’ve got a fight back in court against them to put up their safety history versus our safety history when it comes to driving the speed limit because they can spend the money on the congressman and a house in the Senate so they can get this law and that’s the problem

They also loose a lot of drivers to smaller companies who actually advertise, as a fringe benefit, that their trucks are not governed. So....your turnover is stupid high, this just takes away one little benefit for drivers if they leave you for the hotter chick. My stress levels dropped significantly going from a truck governed at 62 to a truck without a governor. I'm able to keep up with traffic, travel in the middle lanes through cities without impeding traffic. People drive less stupid around you... Can't count the number of times people would cut in front of me and brake check me for going so slow, which of course made the idiotic automatic braking system go nuts nearly causing an accident. Only other choice is to try and travel in the far right lane....blocking ingress and egress into the freeway in cities because you can't keep up with the middle lanes... UGH I'd cut the wire to my speedometer before I put a governor on my truck....

I could write paragraphs on the topic, but it boils down to mentis control. National uniform standards coagulate mental servitude. Logic and reason confuse and dissolve capitulation. Therefore, it’s important to enforce the illogical and unreasonable.

They want more regulations because it makes it harder for small businesses to be in compliance, and they can buy in bulk and have very fancy accountants

Wait until the European trucking rules comes up here , everything is recorded in a truck there , each driver have a personal card they insert into a computer system installed in the truck , and everything from speed to hour of operation is recorded on it , drivers can be liable and get tickets and points removed from their license for up to 2 weeks if their card is being review by authorities.

On east coast the speed limit is 65 or 70. My truck will do 70 i have cruise set at 70 all night long trucks are BLOWING by me at 85 or 90, and lot are doubles. Thats the problem

I think it's a big deal because most of the United States you can travel at 80 mph the amount of miles you can cover cross-country is drastically reduced and your profit margins go completely down

We implemented this rule in Ontario Canada many years ago and we haven't seen any impact on safety.One group of advocates for the rule was promising safer roads and less accidents-didn't happen.Opponents of the idea were predicting many more rear end crushes between passenger and commercial vehicles-didn't happen either.Situation as of now is-nobody is enforcing this rule.Owner operators are removing speed limiters and right now we have 46% of the class 8 trucks registered in Ontario are runing faster than 65 MPH. Seems like whole idea was just to give the opportunity to many advocate groups and NGOs to make money paid by Government for "studies'' "searches"and "researches"and therefore to justify their own existence.

Mega carriers are only 5%of all trucks on the road. With the outcome from last week by supreme Court,they can't put laws in effect,only if it is going true the house and senaat it's legal

speed is always big hazard ,,, a truck makes 60 miles / 100 km an hour has 7 second to stop,,,, 7 second is very easy when we say that but if you have digital timer just count it,,,,, you will see it will be too late to stop when you see the objects on highway,,, be late for your delivery and you can apologize for being late to shipper or receiver but if you kill someone apology doesn't work,,,, I am a 23 years of experienced driver and saw many accident on highway more than 75% of them because of speeding ,,,,be safe guys

I believe that the mega carriers want speed limiters for a few reasons 1 economics to there bottom line 2 truck competition in the freight market and 3 control over the industry

Only the congressional branch both in the federal and state levels are the only bodies given the constitutional authority to pass regulations and laws.

They need to require self insured carriers to post a bond of 750,000 per truck. Just in case.

I worked for Kllm for a lot of yrs interesting that Kllm is pushing for speed limiters for safety. That sounds about rt but if safety is so important why do they push for so many drivers to train and let student drivers run team loads straight out of the gate as a team I trained for many yrs and stopped training because of this it’s not about putting safe drivers on the road as it is moving freight and the quantity of drivers behind the wheel but mega carriers don’t want to talk about this 😳 fmcsa needs to start regulating all these mega carriers that have schools and train new drivers
