TBH, I spread my Marmite about that thickly, though I agree that's not the place to start. And, thankfully, I now know where to get more in California. It even turns out to be popular with my Chinese friends, though there's a danger they'll spread it on Yorkshire pudding, which seems to have become a popular breakfast food. Isn't multiculturality wonderful? I'm babbling, but I loved the channel before and now it has Marmite! That's really my only point. So thanks, Midwinter! Spread the culture! Thinly!!

For anyone reading comments later on and who might be wondering, these red mechs would be part of a Draconis Combine lance (a lance is a group of 4 battlemechs, which is basically a standardized combat group of 'mechs inside the Inner Sphere). The 'mechs are, from left to right, a Panther, a Guillotine, a Dragon, and a Quickdraw. These mechs specific to any faction, but the Panther and Dragon are both commonly associated with the Draconis Combine. Also/finally, the icon you were trying to recreate is actually a coiled dragon with an open mouth and a forked tail, inside a circle! I just spent way too much time replying to a ~2 year old video! :D

As much as I love to watch many other miniature painters' videos, you are the one that makes this beginner really want to get into that mini painting. You make things feel so accessible and approachable and the act of gaining painting XP from level 0 and up fun and rewarding instead of just a frustrating hurdle to have to scale. I am getting my Kimera paints next month, Marco Frisoni pointed me to those and it's the other thing that finally has me excited! Thank you!
@GoobertownHobbies

Thanks so much for the compliments! My goal is absolutely to get more beginners into the hobby, so that's really great to hear :-) And Cool! The Kimera paints are a great idea, I've gotten really interested in pigments and mixing colors, and that box seems like such an awesome product. You absolutely should be excited about that- have fun!!! :-)

The paint collaboration videos are always fun to watch & i found that getting close to having more things painted is having everything built & spray primed. Then its easy to grab what looks fun to paint when the moment strikes. After going through the list of making sure i can play the basics with painted minis, i try to make sure that whatever box/squad i start painting that i finish it.

@@GoobertownHobbies A little bit goes a long way. I put down a blob of butter on my toast, then add a bit of Marmite to it, and mix them together to produce a Marmite spread. This way you can get an even dispersal of yeast extract over your slice, and avoid hitting a lump of pure umami.

@@GoobertownHobbies @naphaneal Sure the designs themselves are old, at least early 90s. But that product is from 2014 and although the general painting level made a big leap over the last 2-4 years, it's vastly inferior to contemporary box arts from equally small competitors like Corvus Belli. After a long absence from Battletech I was actually shocked earlier this year that they just have started to overhaul their designs to the standards set by MWO.

Marmite. You want a pea-sized amount on the tip of the knife, with hot toast washed in butter, add some Heinz baked beans (do you get those over there?) for extra fanciness! Once buttered, you can leave it to go cold but make sure that butter soaks through! Thanks for your channel btw, I decided today to start gathering items to get back into mini painting. Last time I did I was 8, now I'm 30. You reminded me how meditative it could be and I'm massively appreciative of that.

Yeah, a big part of speed painting is planning ahead and knowing what shortcuts to take to achieve the same results. The red Vallejo primer is brilliant, I definitely need to find some. No need for a basecoat and highlights before the wash with that one. Flock actually works well with 6mm miniatures, you just need to apply it sparsely. Clump foliage makes for great looking bushes if you give them a brown wash and green highlights.

The taste of marmite is inversely proportional to the quantity. For the perfect marmite experience: * If you have a basement, go the end of the basement farthest from the stairs and make sure the air ducts are closed off. * Open the jar, but not for longer than 1 second. Immediately close it and put it in an air-tight bag. * Go on vacation for a week. * When you return, get out a knife and wave it in the air. * Spread the captured marmite on toast and add other toppings to taste. Marmite: the homeopathic medicine of bread toppings.

The most common mistake I constantly see with Marmite, is that people think you have to slather it on like peanut butter or chocolate spread. You have to use like the tiniest amount otherwise it will be so savoury you'll hate it. Also toast that bread and butter it first. When it's just a hint of Marmite it's nice, but a bit of cheese of melted cheese on it is a master stroke

Definitely better ways to enforce the scale of those 30' tall war machines than having 7' tufts next to them. :) It'd probably crowd the bases and wouldn't reflect the box art, but I would have been tempted to add some 6mm (or 10mm?) vehicles or buildings to the bases (if you were going for an urban look). Or little trees in that scale (for wilderness). Anything to give the impression, "damn, those are big!" Nearly the weekend and about time to the get back to the "pile of shame". :)

I was pretty excited to see the BattleTech box come out of that wrapping paper, especially since I started watching painting videos to address some BattleTech minis that currently sit unpainted around my house. Unfortunately, due to litigation, someone building a porch, and a litany of other issues, the core units from the first few sourcebooks only started to get brought out of the 80's and 90's a few years ago. Those four models you have there are based on art that was printed in the first few years of the game's life, and they desperately need a refresh. Fortunately, thanks to an _extremely_ successful Kickstarter, quite a few 'Mechs are getting remodeled to go alongside the new box set getting released, including 3 of the four from that box set -- the Dragon, Panther and Guillotine. The new models aren't quite as detailed as the more intricate Warhammer models, but they're also 40 feet of robot condensed down to 2 inches. I wouldn't mind seeing you take another crack at BattleTech miniatures once the new box launches (hopefully later this year).

Nice! Good stuff! My one criticism is that you used a 'heroic' thickness of Marmite on that slice 😂 I'd have it about a third as thick, with plenty of spread (margarine or butter) 👍👍👍

Hi Brent, I love the videos, thanks for making them. I'm from the UK, and if you eat marmite like that you're an animal, try spreading about quarter of what you used. To put it in a term you understand, treat is as a 'wash', you should be able to see the butter underneath. Keep up the good work.

Lol, If Marmite is like Vegemite, you toast some bread, butter it up and spread a small amount on top. I like Vegemite toast for breakfast with cheese and scrambled eggs with a cupper.

Love your videos dude. Very relaxing while I paint. I know from experience that it's hard to get a really good paint job on a low quality sculpt. Decent job considering

I am long a fan of Battletech and new to Goobertown and when I saw the two combining, I knew it was going to be interesting. You spent about 2 hours on these and I expect that's more time and effort than a lot of the official pictures for the game, which is rather unfortunate. Someday I'd like to see you paint some of the better sculpts than those ancient and awful Alpha Strike minis and do some of the more interesting canon paint schemes (Davion Guards, 15th Arcturan Guards, Ghost Bear Alpha Galaxy).

That was a great vid. I do love marmite like that on toast I have to confess. I was not a fan of the style of the mechs but you truly did the box art justice and the blue was really nice. That desert photography was fantastic and you certainly scaled them up well. Another amazing vid once again.

Awesome job as always. I love that this was a bit different, although it made me appreciate the games workshop and other models a bit more too. I'm also a fan of ... not necessarily speed painting.... but not 100 hours for 1 mini. Great work!

Never thought I'd see you paint up something from Battletech. Been playing it off and on since the 90s, and there was a point where it was pretty popular, but that time is long since gone. It's pretty niche now, so it's nice to see it get some attention now and again. That's a fine DCMS lance you've painted up there, and I'd be happy to see them at my table.

@@GoobertownHobbies Brent, if this old style minis are growing on you, consider getting you hands on the new box set called "Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat", released in February this year. Catalyst Game Labs completely upgraded the style of the battlemechs and scale in between the weight classes. You also might want to check "Battletech: Clan Invasion" on Kickstarter. Kickstarter campaign for the new boxset has ended, but you can join as a late backer. Check out the page for this kickstarter, there are a lot of artwork and 3d models shown to give you a taste of what's coming in March/April next year.
