The hit series is back!
After being kicked out of Lichess Speedrunning we return; only this time on Chesscom!
The main idea of trying to identify the typical mistakes that my opponents are playing at the lower levels. Hopefully, this will help you find and repair any such mistakes that you are making yourselves.
In this video we look at the rating range of 800-1200 ELO and run into a few very strong players along the way...

Awesome video Simon! Many thanks. I have picked up chess around the start of the year and struggled around 700-900 for a while now, dabbled with a few openings all over the place (most notably the London System, following your 5 steps!) and now I feel it's time for me to come home, back to the open games and start anew, and this is the perfect video for me right now! So helpful, lots of great tips on reading the board and exploiting beginner mistakes! Thank you so much!

Simon, thanks to your chessable courses I went from losing every game in a small chess club's round Robin tournaments before the pandemic to nearly steam rolling them in their first tournament after the lock down. I was a piece or queen up after every game opening. I made a few blunders that cost me first place. I did beat the the first place winner with the Black Lion (that I actually played poorly: messed up some move order early that could have cost me, but managed to win his queen, only to blunder mine back 2 moves later). The club is mostly old Russian guys, so not really push overs. Thanks for the fun and educational content!

He seems to be the only one calling 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 the Ruy Lopez. I've heard him call 3.Bc4 the Italian Variation of the Ruy Lopez in another video! But, hell, he's a grandmaster. He can call these moves whatever he wants as far as I'm concerned.

it would be rude not to refund them since speedruns are technically just condoned smurfing and people generally expect to play someone around their rating when they put out a seek

@RetroRampage ® I disagree too. You’d pay a lot of money to play a game with a GM for a lesson. Simon offers games for free, he gets paid for RU-vid views and his opponents gain valuable knowledge. Everybody wins. I suspect the reason for lichess’ position has something to do with them being free, open source and non-profit but I haven’t quite figured out the connection.

@stevesidare2493 2 года назад
Being able to recognize your opponent's plans comes with experience. The better you get, the quicker you are at seeing them, and the more deeply you can see them. It's "re cognize." You've faced it before and you now you see it again. It's not a black or white ability. It's gradual. And at that level, they're not likely to know more than a few moves of any opening, and little, if any, variations within it.

But he got the knight for the bishop (an even exchange) and White took a pawn on the next move. So, he did lose a pawn on e6 like he said. He was just thinking ahead through all the exchanges that would take place on e6 and knew he would go a pawn down in the end.

This was interesting and instructive, Simon, but players at the 800 - 1000 level often lose unprotected pieces and pawns and overlook fairly obvious threats, so it might be useful to make videos in which you play against 1500 - 1700 rated players, i.e. average club standard, because I would guess that the majority of your viewers are about this level.

He’s European. They have different naming conventions for some openings. I assume he considers 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 to be the Ruy Lopez and anything on top of that to be the Italian variation, Scotch variation, Spanish variation, etc.
