Speed sign recognition: the good, the bad and the tricky

After many years of waiting, AP2+ cars are finally getting speed sign recognition. This is a must for FSD to ever become a reality, so I am really happy it is starting to happen. Now, of course I wanted to see how good it actually is, but I couldn't, because my car was still at HW2.0 at this point in time. But luckily, my friend Jan Verhulst wanted to help me out with his Model 3 an d we had a fun afternoon trying out all kinds of scenarios and finding all kinds of real world situations.
So, as a thanks, if you like this video and you are inclined to buy a Tesla, please use Jan's referral code ts.la/jan73785 to get some free supercharging miles/kilometers.

That has always been the case, as you can set the speed freely on the highway. This is the same with AP1

I am happy with the current state which is of course far from perfect but the system recognizes most of it which will be a great tool in the small village centers where the database mostly shows wrong max. speeds. Thanks Steven, always love your channel.

Can't wait, just got my MCU and FSD computer upgrades scheduled for Oct. 1st for my AP2 car (FINALLY!). Teslas pace of innovation seems to accelerate. Looking forward to hear of your experience with the upgrades!

Similar results her in NL with speed signs and matrix lights. Nice informative video as always. I thought that sign recognition would immediately be better than the super crappy GPS data but I was wrong. It is reaching the point that I want to disable it because it is essential that in interprets all signs that define speed limits.

Sign recognition...a sign of the times!😏

9:25 I believe that the camera may be confused by the difference in size between both signs. Because the bottom sign is smaller, it may place it a bit farther away to match the surroundings, so it probably thinks the signs are not on the exact same position but just really close to one another (you can also somewhat see it on the visualization)

The mix up with the left signs for another road, and the signs with limitations for trucks, are bit disappointing. It doesn't too hard to make it work properly. Hope to see future updates on this soon. Great video.

Steven, drive to the Netherlands, there you have on the highway two signs, one says 130, below it, another sign with 100 (and remark between 6:00 & 19:00); my EV does handle that perfectly, shows both in the display (and in head-up as well) and adapts cruise control speed accordingly; nice challenge for you with the Tesla ... what will it do?
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters 3 года назад
If I drive near the Kennedytunnel there is a similar situation. Conditional speed limits are being displayed via the database data and the active sign is coloured whereas the inactive sign is greyed out. Same with the conditional speed limit in France where you can only drive 110 when it rains. The Tesla knows sbout this. What does your car do in that situation? Do you know? Would be interesting to know if it reads and interprets or also uses a database in the background
@philipclaeys6920
@philipclaeys6920 3 года назад
@@StevenPeeters it adapts to the speed which is applicable at that moment, meaning in between 6:00 and 19:00 hours it will pick 100, outside this window it will pick up 130 ... how the car does it, that is a good question, I have no idea. What it will do in France, that is a good question, will it recognize when it rains, i doubt it, but worth to try it one day.

It is funny. The car has a sense of humor I guess. 150? nope. Car is smart to know that is probably tempered sign. Because of impossibility of the limit, and the 1 being different style to the rest of sign. The recognition that a sketchy 80 is actually 30, is very impressive test.

Glad to hear that you're finally getting HW3 and MCU2. We can say many things about Tesla, but at the end of the day they are still nice people and so far the only company, that provides retrofits. Regarding the dynamic speed signs: There are actually two things to hat. In your test, the speed signs were above the road. I've noticed, that speed signs above the road are never detected, regardless if they are dynamic or not. Dynamic speed signs were also not detected in they were on the side of the road. The speed limits that are displayed are still a mixture between recognisition and map data. For example: Let's say a road has a limit of 50 and then 60. If the suddenly the length of the 50 zone is increased, Tesla will display the speed limit of 60, getting the data from the map data. This is a tricky thing and leads to the question, what is a more reliable source of information. Nevertheless I have to say, that Teslas implementation is already very good. Of course it needs some improvement, but in general im satisfied.

Have an AP1 loaner now and it detects the dynamic speed signs perfectly. It will come. The question is when? But this update has paved the way to that future and MobilEye’s patents are no longer a concern

Too bad that you didn’t drive in the middle of the A12 on that very first traffic light, I wonder how the technicians at Tesla would have reacted.

When you don't have FSD, but HW3, will it also stop for a red light? I hear people saying it does, but I got the update yesterday and it doesn't do anything when it's red or green (apart from showing them)
@StevenPeeters
@StevenPeeters 3 года назад
Which software version do you have? 2020.36.3.1 does not stop for traffic lights in Europe. Only 2020.36.10 does

I think that this 'viable sign' detection is what sets Tesla's detection apart from Mobileye's; instead of seeing a sign and putting a number on it Tesla may see a SIGN WITH 50 or SIGN WITH 60, etc., so there's no way to make custom speed limits.
@Xanthopteryx
@Xanthopteryx 3 года назад
No, the car do not see a sign with 50 on it. It sees what it has learned to be a sign that represent 50. So you can trick that, by using the proper way, and the proper way have to be tested and experimented with. The same goes for STOP signs. The car actually can be fooled by a guy in a red shirt with scribble on it.
@dakerbal
@dakerbal 3 года назад
@@Xanthopteryx I meant that it doesn't see a circular sign with a red border and with a number in it, it sees a specific form of speed limit sign
@Xanthopteryx
@Xanthopteryx 3 года назад
@@dakerbal I think it is more abstract than this. Computers are pretty lousy at this. They try to interpret but have no clue of what is going on - they do not Understand or have the context. That is one reason why it also think a sign with an image on a speed limit sign in it, is a speed limit sign. Like this www.highschooldriver.com/assets/image/compressed/road-signs/warning-signs/speed-reduction-sign-warning-sign.png

@@Xanthopteryx I understand... all I'm saying is that it doesn't see a sign and put a number on it, it 'sees' (or thinks that it sees) a specific type of sign with a specific number on it

Ma Model 3 SR+ is from 07/2019. So I guess I'm one of the last Model 3s with HW 2.5. Which means I will be one of the last ones to get the Upgrade to HW 3. [sigh]

5:05 I do not think that the car even saw that sign. That fake 80-sign: This would not trick a human since no human with their brain working properly would think that that road is an 80-road. Those digital overhead signs: Our Volvo V90 handles them here in Sweden, since we bought the car in 2017. That really impressed me! One thing i have noticed even on other videos is that the car always seems to break the speed limit rule by applying the new speed BEFORE the sign. That is of course okay if you go Down to a lower speed but not if you go Up. In our Volvo i have to pass the sign so it does not switch until i have passed it, somewhere along behind half the car length.

It is impressive that machine can also recognize that it is not 80, but tempered 30.
@Xanthopteryx

@@movax20h That is only because computers vision are different compared to humans. There are other videos out there were it is WAY off, like when it have one of those prioritized traffic signs and it think that is a speed sign!
