In this video, I did two quick, real-world, side by side tests with my old and new MacBook pros. My most heavily used apps which stress a computer are Adobe Lightroom Classic, and Apple Final Cut Pro X. Check out how each performed & give some thoughts on the tests in the comments below.

Are you seriously running a test off of a usb 3.0 drive/ ? Smh use the internal storage and use an actual scientific test that maxes out all resources . Anything loaded off a drive will only be as fast as that drive aka there will be little to no difference . Fyi
@seisenbach

I was running the test of a USB-C ssd drive, and the intent of these tests was real world situation. I don't care about being super scientific because that's not how I will use the product while out working in some of the most remote locations in the world. My projects usually take up 3-4 terabytes of data, and with redundancies I use all external drives for storing photo/video files. If there was little to no difference, then why did the lightroom export take 10 minutes less with the new computer?
@jazzlehazzle

@@seisenbach bc FCPX has no other bottlenecks, whereas Adobe LR is full of them w/ both processor and GPU underutilizations, so at least the 2015 will be slower than the drivespeed wall, and the 2019 still might not even have hit it. What you've just shown is that for your usecase w. FCPX using an exHD, at only 1080p that's blown money. But if you're gonna do 4K, you might notice a diff, but again, only if the timeline & render computes are slower than the macs (or at least the 2015) can read/write the drive.
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 5 лет назад
jazzlehazzle I actually shoot in 4K, that project was just rendered out in 1080 per the client’s request.

someone didn't pay attention to the scientific method in high school; by keeping one variable constant as your "control" you are then effectively able to compare all other means.

in terms of stability, how do you find it? No system crash or slowdown? Have you used it for a long time? (I refer to the new model.) You can see the differences for video export if you use 4k files in h.264 or if you want to see an abyss I think you should use files in h.265 which on the 19 benefit from decoding on the T2 chip.
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 5 лет назад
I've had no crashes or slow downs with the new machine. I have been using it heavily since it arrived in early june. I've been changing my workflow a bit with the new machine, so I can't answer the h.264 vs h.265 bit yet.

Thank you for the review! I was super happy that you did this test out of an external usb drive and the main reason is the real life scenario. Even if we overlook this real life scenario, it was still the best test to do because .... you can easily bump your 2015 ssd speed to 2x by changing your internal ssd to an Aura Pro X2, which have Read speeds up to 3282MB/s and Write speeds up to 2432MB/s (I recommend you to do it) Can you do a future test with the iPad pro as well? Why you don't do edit on the go with the iPad Pro? Should be faster.
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 4 года назад
Much appreciated! I’m all about testing in scenarios which I will actually use equipment. It may not show the absolute best aspects of a piece of gear, but that’s not really practical in many workflows. I will definitely be doing some tests with the iPad Pro as well. Currently, I use LumaFusion with iPad Pro for some video editing which I export an xml for fcpx (I use their beta app) to finesse color and sound. As for stills, I do a combo of gnarbox 2.0 with iPad Pro/iPhone for on the go edits. It’s definitely quick and easy, but I haven’t tried working with a large library on mobile. Once things slow down a tad I may try it with my current project (over 8,000 still images).

@therealmarv 4 года назад
You talked about Lightroom numbers at 07:13 but you did not showed them at all. Confusing. Also about video export... you realize there is a prerendered cache on old projects which influences test results?
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 4 года назад
You're right, I screwed that up. It was 27+ minutes with the 2015 MacBook, and 18 minutes with the 2019 MacBook. Also, any cache files would've been on the external drive with the library so it wouldn't have influenced results.

I don't export anything directly to an external drive. I think you won't see a massive difference in LR export performance from the two machines if you exported the photos to each internal drives.
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 4 года назад
Benjamin Moore you’re probably right in regards to using internal drives. This test was meant to follow my workflow while working in the field, so exporting to external drives was necessary as it keeps my projects organized well.

@@seisenbach I'm thinking of buying a used 2015 MBP myself and for LR I don't think there will be this much of a difference as your tests for my use. You're limited to the I/O of TB 2 vs TB 3 when it comes to read/write to external drive.

Just got it, it's an amazing machine, thermals are great, a bit loud, but does a GREAT job maintaining temperatures below 70 degrees on the most stressful Unity Game development/Video editing/Swift programming benchmark . I picked this one over a 2019 MacBook Pro 13-inch , The replaceable SSD is a bonus. The battery is the only thing that feels like the week spot from my opinion, but I can't complain about it too much too!
@seisenbach

It really depends on what you're trying to do with the computer. The 2015 is still a solid machine.

This test has no sense. You're comparing the transfer rate on a USB 2 vs USB 3. Of course the new model will be better.
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 4 года назад
You're 100% correct that the USB ports alone with effect this. However it does have sense as I have gotten asked many times about real world side by side speeds in case the updates are worth spending money for the newer model.

@seisenbach
@seisenbach 4 года назад
I've had MacBooks last 5+ years while still being solid computers. The 2015 was re-sold and will probably get another 4 years of use out of it at least. They're a worthy investment.
@LKirahs
@LKirahs 3 года назад
I prefer the MBP 2015, I will never buy a computer where I can't replace the drive. It's enough that I can't replace the RAM anymore. Storages are failing, and it's only a matter of time. For this price it is better to buy the Razer Blade - The design and thickness are similar, and we can replace parts that wear out.
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 3 года назад
it all depends on what your needs are software wise. I am extremely efficient using final cut pro x so for me MacBook pros are way better than any PC. I also don't store much data internally on a computer so inside storage is also not a big deal for me.

Pedro Nevarez I think your still fine with the 2015. Especially if you beefed up the specs a bit. My biggest reason for upgrading was more and more 4k footage being used.
@jazzlehazzle
@jazzlehazzle 5 лет назад
@@pedronevarez4327 big no, waste of money as far as performance for that. Your 2015 will crush those tasks until they make a holographic sentient OSX. So only upgrade if you like the bigger trackpad, USB dongles, an iffy keyboard but less weight, or just the overall trim and you've got cash to burn. But until web sites and browsers start running slow you've got another 5 years performance-wise if not more.

Another wasted review that nobody wants. Very few people can afford a brand new fully spec'd out laptop. People want to know if its worth going from or buying a fully spec'd out 2015 or a base model 2019. Obviously a full spec'd 2019 will be drastically better. What is the point of this?
@seisenbach
@seisenbach 4 года назад
Before I made this, a bunch of people on other channels asked me how my spec'd out 2015 would compare to the 2019 I had just bought. Why wouldn't I compare a top of the line machine to another top of the line machine? I also did this with real world scenarios because every working pro I know uses external drives (both HDD and SSD) to work off of. If you'd taken a gander at the comments down below you'd realize there are people who did value this. I'm sorry you didn't get what you hoped for from it.
