Yeah, I’ve been using it for probably about six months now and I didn’t realize that so a few people that are newer to the hobby had never heard of it. I never made the video before because I just assumed most people knew about it. There’s always a new wave of people coming into the hobby!

APP is definitely the best for stacking and extracting the different channels even with OSC and a dual band filter. Even the light pollution tool is excellent as is the channel combinations. I'd still do the rest in Pixinsight and Photoshop. Excellent video mate you have a way of making things simple without all the excessive information others seem to leave in their videos.

I've been using APP for 3 years now and would say it's definitely the gold standard of stacking. I would also say it's by far the best software for creating mosaics and very straightforward. Personally I still use pixinsight for all my processing but there's no way I would stack in it.

I whole heartedly agree with everything you said. I also have been using APP for the past 3 years and have spent some time comparing it to WBPP. For me it was no contest, APP all the way . Much better in speed (MAC silicone), simplicity, and especially in putting together mosaics. While I like APP's post processing, I still use PI and PS for most of that. Unfortunately PI is still not MAC silicone optimized yet. APP is my go to stacking program.

I would love to see the processing stuff. I have been using APP for two years now and have started to use PI for processing, mainly because APP processing is not really well documented. There is no ‘Adam Block’ for APP unfortunately, but I would love to see you to become that person, since you can make complex stuff look so simple. No need to take up table tennis though 🙃
@darkrangersinc

Well I certainly don’t want to be the “Adam Block” of anything I’ll let him keep that title lol, but I’m happy to keep making content on all things astrophotography and continue to help the community! Some channels make complicated stuff seem complicated my goal is to always simplify and make it more approachable. My specialty to date for processing tutorials has been Photoshop and Pixinsight but happy to add in some A.P.P. Fun fact grew up playing full size tennis even played in college 😉

@@darkrangersinc I think you strike the right balance between a full explanation of all the theories behind a certain (PI) process and someone who just says ‘put that slider at 10’ without explaining why. That’s what I like about your videos, they are quite well balanced in depth of content.

I’ve never used sharp cap. I’ve used ASI, which is also fast, but sacrifices quality. Deep sky stacker same thing. And of course WBPP which has great features but is pretty slow on big files especially with the big full frame sensor that this camera has each individual subframe is 118 MB.

What set up are you using? I’ve had a few people from the DRI community group s report that their speed improved dramatically after purchasing it none over about 15 or 20 minutes. If you have below 32 GB of RAM and aren’t using an SSD, I would consider upgrading some of those components, but either way, it will still be faster than PI
@Excessus1978
@Excessus1978 5 месяцев назад
@@darkrangersinc Oh I’ve done so many tests. I have 64GB RAM and 2TB fast M2 disk for APP to use when stacking. APP usually uses 300GB of HD space for stacking 120GB/file RAW files. The bottle neck in step6 is the harddrive speed. I use OSC så its 3 channels that needs to chew. Stacking one channel in OSC is much much faster than stacking all three. So doing Ha-Oiii Color is a waste of time regarding quality and time. Stacking Ha and Oiii separetely and combining later is faster and better IQ.
@darkrangersinc
@darkrangersinc 5 месяцев назад
@@Excessus1978 I have the same stats on an M2 MAX and even with QHY 600M full frame data I’m using now with huge 118mb files it’s still waaay faster than WBPP. My worst stack so far is roughly 20 hours for almost 20 hours of data with that camera but it would be the same as about 60h with a 268 or 2600 cam.

Another fantastic tutorial!!! I use APP for stacking, but haven’t been able to do an Image Solve (in Pixinsight) or SPCC. I recently found that SPCC doesn’t recognize the FITS header in an APP stacked image. Do you have any information on this?
@tvanpeer

I typically take the FITS header from one of the Lights and drop it on the stacked image in PI.

I moved over from DSS a couple years back and have used APP. I started using WBPP mainly because you can stack with different gain settings, different calibration frames and even different filters if needed. DSS just doesn't handle the multi-night/ calibration frames as elegantly as DSS. Not sure how flexible APP is in this regard
@Mr77pro
@Mr77pro 5 месяцев назад
And different exposure lengths...DSS hates that😅😅

APP will do full mutli-session and multi-channel/filter datasets on autopilot these days, simply load the lights and all calibration data for all filters and sessions and click on 6) integrate... all the masters will be matched properly with the correct light frames. APP will also process data from different setups automatically with different image scales as well, no problem to load data from 10 different telescopes and have APP combine it into 1 result.

@frankenstein77777

APP was my stacking tool for a while until I moved to Pixinsight. I'll give it another go now, but for me there are two deficiencies that detract from it. Firstly, the lack of proper and thorough documentation. This has been promised for several years now but AFAIK still doesn't exist. You mentioned some features in your video that I didn't know existed; how are users supposed to get full functionality without a full manual? Secondly, it does not accept or Pixinsight's xisf file format. Not a massive deal breaker, but further processing in PI does become more awkward when the final stacked images are either fits or tiff.
@paashaas147
@paashaas147 5 месяцев назад
First of all, please accept my apologies for having everyone wait for the promised manual. Just to let you know, APP 2.0 stable is almost ready which will be accompanied with a full printable manual in both PDF and HTML (online) formats... like we promised. The transfer to APP 2.0 on a new development platform just took so much work that it took a long time to get to this stage. One of the great benefits is that APP runs 100% natively on the new macs with Apple Silicon making it very fast. Some of the features in this video were only released recently as well as part of the work for APP 2.0. Another upside of the new development platform is that APP is much faster now in general (so also on Linux and Windows), especially on newer computers, so APP is ready for the future for sure.
@frankenstein77777
@frankenstein77777 5 месяцев назад
@@paashaas147 Thanks for your reply. I'll certainly look forward to seeing and using the manual. I processed some data today in APP (over 1000 subs) that previously took Pixinsight WBPP about 10 hours to complete...APP took 2.5 hours! I was blown away by this difference. The resolution in the PI masters appeared to be slightly better than those from APP, but their noise was greater. I will tweak some of the settings to see if APP can improve.

@@grandmasteryoda9893in the U.S. it’s $2300 vs $3000 so pretty easy to make the choice given 50% more captivity and better quality/engineering. If you don’t need lightweight then the EQ6-R is a workhorse. Losmandy is someone I’m talking to right now to try their G11G but they also make smaller mounts with 40 or 50lb capacity at a good price.
