It blew my mind when I accidentally turned on the "God mode" cheat playing the Xbox version. I thought I had found an ultimate secret.

Carmack’s perfect combination of programming genius and ultra positive view on open source is why games are as good as they are now. When drivers and graphics cards were a mess he pulled a power move and told the card business that they either support OpenGL, or they won’t play Id games.

I think it's *VERY* important to point out that the new official ports of Doom running in Unity has a graphics option for *Vertical Sync (VSync)* on by default, and at the very least in the PS4 release, it causes *SERIOUS* input lag, it really tripped me up at first and I didn't realize what was wrong. Make sure to turn it off, because it'll cripple your gameplay otherwise. If the game feels oddly stiff and difficult for no seeming reason, this is why. It also doesn't let you rebind your controls, which I think they should address.

Fun fact: There is a reverse engineering of PSX Doom that is available with source code. And there is a PC port of that code called PsyDoom. Maybe someone could speedrun that.

Well now I need to find a Tapwave zodiac with Doom so I can hold a world record in something.

Filthy doom trihard here, I just want to point out (even if you kinda nod to it) that all these ports are pretty cool but there's absolutely NO COMPARISON among any of these and the major community made PC ports prboom+ and gzdoom. PRBoom+ is the best for vanilla compatibility in demos and general gameplay (so that's why 99% of speedrunners use that or crispy/chocolate) and GZDoom is basically a full featured modern game engine with awesome mod support that also happens to run doom. I just think they both should have had a brief direct mention and then left out of the conversation since they absolutely crush the competition.

Fun fact: DOOM on PlayStation had three release variants: long box, standard jewel case, and greatest hits jewel case. The standard jewel case version is rare and commands the highest price of the three among collectors.

So after almost 20 years i finally know why I was Always invincible in the Doom Port which came with the Doom3 Xbox Version.... I was Holding LT to Run and pressed the fire Key or Others and activated without my knowledge Cheatcodes. Lol i never understood what all the fuze about Ultra Nightmare was cause of this! 😅

I spent hours and hours playing doom on the ps1 as a kid. That "Williams entertainment" logo screen is seared in to my brain.

"DAUGHTER! Why did I find a pregnancy test in your room?" "I'm speedrunning Doom!" "Why? Can't you just get pregnant like other girls?"

Me: "Oh, it's just the first level, this can't be that hard." Doom: "It is."

Glad to see PS1 Doom getting the love it deserves! What a fantastic game.

I think it's really a fantastic thing that a creator/developer can just give away their game to the community to live on and evolve. I wish more did that.

The PSX version of DooM was my fisrt PSX game, haha. I remember the shock of not hearing the familiar sounds of the original DooM when we first played it. Good times.

I just wanted to say: Doom 64 is pretty good too.

I absolutely love the music in the PS1 port of Doom, it makes the port pretty unique all things considered.

When I first watched this video, I was a little bummed hearing about a great official source port on steam. A couple years back, I bought Doom on steam and it ran through dosbox. As it turns out, once this new, official version came out, I got it for free with my Doom purchase all those years ago. That was really cool of them. I thought I would have needed to buy it again.

Because of this video I bought the DOOM classic collection on Steam. It runs super well and is on sale at the moment. Thanks for the Doom content Karl, it inspired me to play it (casually of course).

I never had a computer growing up so my first Doom experience was playing a friends copy on the PSX. Lovely game and port, but I do remember feeling ill after watching my friend play for hours. With all that spinning around. :p

My first doom contact was on the ps1. You should have given a sample of the sounds in the video, because it is just absolutely amazing. There is also a handful of exclusive levels, which adds A LOT of character to the game, specially the final ones.

I can't even begin to describe how important that PSX version of Doom was to me. There was just something about that ambient soundtrack and lighting that has stuck with me my entire life. I highly recommend playing that version or the PC port of it (Doom PSX TC), if you like the originals.

Karl, speaking as someone with no intention of attempting a speedrun, your videos are always super interesting. And personally I find your content just a bit more interesting than other speedrunning channels, not sure why.

It's kinda cool seeing him mention the Xbox port. It's how I got into DooM and DooM 2 back in high school. I remember holding the left trigger all the time, it's not as bad as you think for normal gameplay. However, I didn't know there were cheat codes, or a secret level end on hangar. Now I gotta try these, thanks Karl.

Great video, really brought back memories seeing the PS1 port as that is what got me into Doom and 1st Person Shooters back in 95.

Doom 1 on psx was stunning. You missed one also great thing about the port. It was link up. Yes you needed 2 playstation s and 2 tvs and 2 copies of the game but it was well well worth it!

2:00 OMG, i remember getting ultimate doom, being frustrated cause something "felt off" only to realise moving the mouse moved doom guy, and i was so pissed off for along time cause i thought "welp, thats just how doom plays" of course i eventually figured out how to disable it, and was relieved to play doom optimally.

Using the mouse to move feels really out of place for Doom, and clumsy given the varied geometry of the levels, but I've tried using it for Wolfenstein 3D, and it can actually be really good there, it can really let you 'thread the needle' with doors, really fast and reliably.

Walls in Doom do not have a single dedicated job. They're integral in controlling movement, especially in terms of speed regulation.

Doom on PSX is (based on the gameplay footage in this video) graphically awesome. The lighting effects are immediately apparent, and even though they're primitive today, they look downright amazing for a console port of that time. I LOVE it. That said, the Saturn Doom port has its own history, not entirely unlike the 3DO port, and what I can't grasp is how supposedly the proper Saturn port didn't meet the satisfaction of id. Or at least it was something along those lines. I pray for the day that either we get a working version of the original port or someone comes along and does a proper port so many years after the fact, ala OptiDoom for the 3DO. Which, by the way, is a project that doesn't get enough love.

Originally, I did not watch these Doom videos because I was not a fan of the game and did not know many of the strategies or mechanics of the game. But recently I started watching them and I have to say that these videos are amazing. The explanations of mechanics, strategies, and speedruns, are easy to understand and very interesting. These videos are amazingly edited and scripted, and this has become one of my favorite RU-vid channels to watch in my free time. Great Job!

The Jaguar version is really solid and underrated. The unique controller allows you to switch to any weapon at any time directly instead of cycling through them in order, which is a big bonus. And of course the Jaguar version formed the basis for the GBA, 32X, 3DO, Saturn, and PS1 ports of Doom; the PS1 version was then the basis for PS1 Final Doom and ultimately Doom 64. Thankfully Carmack saw to the Jaguar port himself or the history of Doom might be very different.

PSX Doom is still a brilliant game, and I for one love the dark ambient soundtrack.

I really love the doom videos, can’t beat a cup of tea, biscuit and Karl doom video, rock and roll. Please Keep them coming I respect how much research goes into these videos ! :)

I played the psx version a lot back then... and people underestimate how important the music was. That version was brilliant and that was one of the reason. The music just gave you anxiety while playing, with random screams, etc. No other doom had such a good music for the game.

@Karl Jobst : Actually, Auto-SR50 is not allowed in Doom speedrun. If you check rules : -using auto sr50 on sourceports that have it is NOT ALLOWED I didnt saw any categories accepting it yet

Love your videos man, I am assuming you have probably heard 100 times over but I would love to hear you explain the Dream cheating case that is going on right now.

PS1 doom was considered by John himself to be a superior port, but he did say the PC version was better for controls.

I played Doom on Tapwave Zodiac - Duke 3d too. That device was ahead of it's time, I enjoyed it.

I've never been a speed runner but for some reason the practice just fascinates me - I have been enchanted by your channel, I may even try speed running some doom always such a great game!

Everytime I'm wonder when Karl will upload there's a new video. You've got me watching like 10 speed running channels!

Back in highschool (late 90s) me and my friends played a ton of doom deathmatch. I would put a quarter in-between in caps lock and the shift key when you pushed the shift key down the quarter would tilt and hold the shift key down.

You should do a video on Dreams speedruns that could be fake..

Fun fact. I bought the classic doom pack on steam a while back. Been playing mostly Ultimate doom, but stopped from january to October. When i came back and reinstalled, i thought i had installed something wrong, not realising this was the unity port. Now it makes sense.

Glad to see PS1 Doom on your list as that was my introduction to Doom despite being maybe 5 or 6 at the time. To this day, I have never forgotten the ammo cheat - X, Triangle, L1, Up, Down, R2, Left, Left

Ngl every time I see that intro in Playstation version I kinda tear up. My dad and me play this game every year and the nostalgia always hits me. Not only because this is literally the first game I played as a fricking 6 year old (which definitely didnt traumatize me) and what got me into games. I normally dont like shooting games but this version makes me nostalgic every time. Glad people apricciate this as much as I do

I’m sure you’ve heard this before but as someone that has been through some of the most intense things life can throw at you I can’t tell you how much it means that you start off every video with calling us “you absolute legends”. It makes me feel better than so many “real” things. And I know you don’t know me and I only found this channel about 2 weeks ago but you have been a great thing in my life to distract from all the BS. You suck me into a world where the only thing that matters is shaving off seconds and I can’t thank you enough.

I've never really cared about speedrunning, Doom, or any of that stuff until I've stumbled upon Your channel. Now I want to know everything there is to know about any Doom port there is. Really, really great videos, no matter what the topic is, You always present it in a very, very interesting way. And it's good to be called an absolute legend once in a while :D great job, I hope You'll keep them comin'.

Daaaamn that unity port sounds like a very good deal, thank god is cheap here in argentina where every steam game released nowadays is expensive as hell, I'll sure give your challenge a try! Thank you for letting me know of this new port, love ya

The reason the Saturn port was compromised was because John Carmack forced it to be. The coder of the Saturn port (forgot his name) originally got 60fps using the Saturn's own hardware to render everything. Unfortunately, John Carmack didn't like the texture warping, and for whatever reason, John didn't want the Saturn's own DSP chips to be used, either, so he forced the Saturn coder to use a column-based renderer with only the CPU doing everything. This is why the Saturn port runs so badly.

There was also an unofficial Sega Dreamcast release back in 2003 though like the Xbox version they have the same dated DOS controls and settings, but adds Doom 64 sprites to most enemies in Doom 2 and also includes TNT Evilution and Plutonia Experiment.

I remember putting a Technic LEGO weight brick on a key to get 'autorun' in Doom in 1994. Worked a treat!
