This week Davin tackles upgrading our 1946 Ford truck's transmission. This was a truck assembled in 4 days on the grounds of the Hershey Swap meet in 2015 and ever since the plan has been to upgrade to a T5. Well, six years later Davin finally found the time. Watch along as we take you through the process. We'll show you what it takes to do an upgrade like this, and worse case you might learn what not to do...

An old dishwasher also works well as a parts washer; just smaller. Those industrial parts washers use same wash methods; i have repaired / maintained them before. That's how i got the dishwasher / parts washer idea. Use a non suds soap / degreaser. Cascade works ok. Portable dishwasher on wheels, with sink connection and butcher block top is a nice find.

I recently got a heated rotary parts washer from auction. I cleaned a T5 by hand and used etching primer and painted it with engine silver heat paint. I wish I had the parts washer when I did my T5, if you take everything apart it will clean small parts, gears, shafts, etc...The parts washer I got has a skimmer to remove oil and a heated element to get rid of the oil. It is 100% self contained. Does your old dishwasher do that?

You always mention to get out in the shop. A year ago I finally tackled the 37 Chev PU build that I bought from my aunt and uncle in 87. I had quit and stored it after a couple of major life events including the early death of my father who was working on it with me. Then this year I started suffering debilitating pain in my leg and had to quit. Fast forward a few months and I had surgery on my spine to correct a bulge pressing on my spinal nerve. I have to go through the rehab process for a couple of months before I can resume work but I'm looking forward to getting out in the shop. I'm putting a late model LT1 from a 2014 Silverado in it so strengthening the frame is paramount. Already have a Fatman MII front end installed.I'll have a 6L80E transmission.

Just remembered the transmission I cleaned from a Lancer 1800GSR last year. It was a 4-speed manual and full of gunk and grime, and now it's working way more better and shifting smoothly. I guess I did a decent job

I was smiling when you were talking about the Chevelle crossmember. I had a 68 Chevelle in high school. I probably put three different 350 turbos in that car, they just wouldn't hold up. I remember underneath that thing sliding that crossmember up and down those frame rails many times.👍
@Paulster2
@Paulster2 2 года назад
I did exactly what you're talking about with a 72 Chevelle, when I replaced a SBC 305/TH350 (not the original engine OR transmission ... came with 307/Powerglide which I'd changed out a few years before to get it back on the road) with a BBC 402/TH400 ... I just had to slide the cross member to different holes which were already in the frame rail. Surprised me, actually.

Very cool. I just did this in my 54 Chevrolet Sedan. A buddy of mine named Brian showed me how. He did it in the 90s. Before there were any adapters or cnc tables. Using junkyard parts and ingenuity. It makes the old 6 cylinder way more fun being able to stretch its legs. Making it from a weekend warrior. To a true daily driver. Keep up the great work. Very motivational and entertaining

Even back in the day when that truck was new many people had the same problem or just wanted to save money on gas and wear and tear on the engine added an aftermarket overdrive unit. They even marketed a two speed rear end for the model T cars and trucks called the Ruxton. The only problem then and now it's a pretty expensive proposition and the T5 defiantly is a much cheaper option but much more labor intensive. What I have also seen is the set up from a later model Ford car like a 1949-53 Borg Warner three speed with overdrive swapped in and a floor shifter adapted to the transmission.

I had a T5 in my '88 S10 with the 2.5L Iron G=Duke 4cyl. engine. It had a mech. speedo , but used that POS hydraulic throwout assy. and I always wished it had been the old mech. version. It was a failure point that was almost unrepairable when it failed as it refused to bleed out properly. I finally traded in the S10 because of the hydraulic crap.

Is it a World-Class OR Non-World-Class? If someone can help with that I'll appreciate it. Also the Dana300 is leaking just a drop here and there from the drain plug I believe. I'm not really using it much AT ALL unfortunately. Any recommendations on weather it should be rebuild or?? If anyone out there has a suggestion. It sat for a few years in a garage. It's not rocket science to have and own a gas axe it's not expensive to get a starter kit and any local supplier can fill a set of tanks or rent a set to you for cheap . A good starter kit will run on average under 200 dollars for a decent one or 300 to 400 for a really good torch and gauges . the best way to do it is get a cheap set up and teach yourself to use it then later when you know what you want spend the money for a good rig. the most important thing is be safe there are a few simple rules to keep from blowing yourself up but as long as your not an idiot it's all good

Your ring finger could get skinned by electrical tools or even get ripped off. I would never work wearing my wedding band/ring.

This is Machine Shop 101 type stuff... you learn it in the first day or two in junior high shop class. You remove all jewelry, wristbands, watches or anything in the way of clothing below the elbow joint. You also remove anything hanging from your neck and tie up any long hair so that nothing can get caught up in moving equipment. Speaking of clothing - no loose fitting shirts or pants and the recommendation on shirts is buttons or snaps so that your shirt can break away if worse comes to worse. I myself once saw a guy running a large LeBlond horizontal mill get his shirt tails caught up in a boring head and it was dragging him slowly in. Fortunately, the mill was set at 25 RPMs so he had time to rip open the shirt and spin out of it - naked from the waist up. Aside from the buttons missing, he could put the shirt back on AFTER he shut off the mill and unwound the shirt from the spindle and boring head. Damage? Shirt only. None to the guy or the machine... but think about what could have happened if the spindle was moving at a higher rate of speed. Say 300 RPMs. His shirt would have been violently ripped off his body after he slammed into the spindle. I seriously doubt he would have been unscathed. As it was, he continued working after finding some duct tape to keep his shirt closed! You can believe he tucked in his shirt every day after that too. As for me, I'll admit I didn't actually react to what I saw until about 10 seconds after he shut off the mill. I was like a deer, caught in the headlights standing on the platform of my own mill about 25 feet away... just watching that potential for disaster unfold. I finally got down and walked over to check on him along with a couple of other guys... we all got the jitters after a few minutes. I always thought it odd how that worked, you'd think it would happen immediately. Moral of the story here? Always practice good habits and think about what you're doing. The best way to prevent injury is to never be in a position to get injured. As has been said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Best wishes to all! - Max Giganteum
