SpeedyBee Goggle Module: Testing it out, and comparing to IRC RapidFIRE

Is analog dead? Well, maybe if you are made of money and can transfer your entire fleet to your digital platform of choice. But if you've got even as half as many models as me then analog is something that will live on for a long time. But which analog module should you go for? Normally it's a case of getting your hands on an IRC RapidFIRE, or perhaps a TBS Fusion. But today we take a look at SpeedBees' 5.8Ghz Goggle module... it's certainly priced keenly, but can it hold up to the competition? Let's find out.
This module was kindly supplied by SpeedyBee for review, so if you want to check out the product in more detail, please consider using the following affiliate link: www.speedybee.com/speedybee-5...

Great review as always. Its very impresive how similar the picture quality is with the Rapidfire and the price is great too. Thank you for sharing.

That finder functionality is pretty nice - I suppose it will work very well if your quad goes down at a distance to get you close to it, then an onboard beeper could be audible to get you the rest of the way.
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 месяцев назад
Yes - it's very useful, especially if a 75mm goes down in the woods. I wouldn't have much of a chance without it. The SpeedyBee needs to be more sensitive here though to really get up to the level of how well RapidFIRE can pin down a models location

Thank you very much for the effort and especially for the side by side. I am staying with analogue video and have been putting off upgrading to the immersion rc (a little too expensive). But the SB Module makes the up grade affordable. Thank you

I wanted an honest review, and look who popped up! Hope you are well Wayne, been a long time! If you fancy joining us for a fly in Warwickshire, you are always welcome.. just off the M40. We fly and camp over for whole weekends once a month in the summer. Would be great to fly with you again!

Hey Rupes - glad you are still out there and deafening people with your planes :) In theory, would love to meet up and do some flying. In practice, always trickier with organising time etc. But I'll keep it in mind for the summer!

I prefer digital BUT, I still build and fly analog rigs too. Just because it’s still fun and just different. And the challenge of getting a good signal is kind of fun sometimes.

Thanks mate! Much appreciated and perfectly timed! Would love to find out what it would be like at race day. The recevers in my old ev200d were perfect with dealing with DJI amd other systems at race days. Unfortunately the skyzone 04x v3 with quad diversity just fall sort of the same quality. May have yo look at the SB as getting your hands on the other ywo modules can be a pain, even before the price tags 😎

@CurryKitten

It can really change minute by minute here. I can do these indoor flights and get a clean signal on 1 lipo, and then really bad interference on the next one.
@ShiftyFPV
@ShiftyFPV 6 месяцев назад
you should have done them both on the same goggle! (not sure how much the HDzero deinterlacing helps but it would have helped the rapid fire at least a little bit) ! Love the Video keep up the good work
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 месяцев назад
I thought about doing that, but as you would have seen with one of the clips, the interference on another day was far worse - and can really change minute by minute - so I thought it best to record on the 2 simultaneously. The FatShark wasn't using it's own DVR of course, I had an IRC Powerplay linked up to record from it

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 5 месяцев назад
I didn't - mostly because the RapidFire seems tricky to squeeze in there. It should absolutely work though. If they get the firmware up to the level of RapidFire's finder, then I'll happily swap it over for the SpeedyBee module

Great review, but not clear if you did the Finder function on the SpeedyBee with the same patch antenna as on the Rapidfire? Couldn't the difference in the antenna sensitivity change the results?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 месяцев назад
I didn't, and whilst I might have got a slightly different result I would still expect a different beep rate when I'm 1m away vs 3m in. It's this very fine measure of the signal which is most important when you are finding a model.
@marksherman630
@marksherman630 6 месяцев назад
I agree that is an important capability, which is why a test using the same antennas would clarify the results. After all, the device can only beep based on input from the antennas, right?🙂@@CurryKitten

Cheers mate. Nice review. Q. Will this fit into a set of Skyzone 04x V2 Goggles? 🎉🎉🎉🎉
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 5 месяцев назад
I don't know - I don't have a pair to try. SpeedyBee only mention the Orqa as having an issue fitting without any sort of adapter, but they don't mention SkyZones specifically in either fitting, or not. If the module bay is the same dimensions as the standard FatShark one, then it should fit. A bit of googling showed up some people saying it was slightly too tight to fit the TBS Fusion in, so you might want to drop an email to SpeedyBee and check with them

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 5 месяцев назад
For the newer WalkSnail and HD0 goggles, I don't as they have a diopter adjustment, but in my Fatsharks, yes. I use ones from RHO, who are very good. Especially compared to the awful plastic FatShark diopters you can get. I made a video about them here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mU-_ABiqihw.html

I use the pro58 with opensource firmware as well and have no issues. However, I have no idea if these expensive analog receivers are any better. It sucks compared to DJI but I love my small analog quads.

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 месяцев назад
I would say it depends on where you are flying. I've got a few of those original Eachine modules as well (although I got the one where you have the antennas on different boards, so had the extension in the HT bay. On a regular flying field, or even around trees - you won't see any difference. It's only where you have the signal bouncing off walls everywhere and have lots of multipathing that this frame reconstruction stuff will show itself to be better than regular diversity

I fly lot of analog. I have hdz goggles with sb module. but I think I have some unknown issue, very disturbed signal, tested out lot of antennas . The only thing I don't try yet is to try another channel. I am always flying in 5865 A1. And I do not understand yet if the sb module is a mix, diversity or what...I also heard that some cameras don't send frames constantly and this could be another issues in interlacing signal. I would go give a try using NTSC instead of PAL: But I don't know if can help.

Depends on your budget and preferences. The FatSharks and Skyzones of this world are pretty good. Just get yourself a decent 5.8 module and a good VTX on your rover side

@kaskalo2
@kaskalo2 3 месяца назад
I am learning on this… If I understood well, why would you ever use legacy mode?
@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 3 месяца назад
Great question - as unless you have had old cameras from years ago you might never get why it's there. When Rapidfire was first released it was found that lots of the old cameras on the market didn't quite produce a frame as per the standard so Rapidfire had trouble working with these and you'd end up losing sync. This normally presents as a very slowly rolling screen (which is terrifying to try and fly through) so if you were having this problem, you could stick it in legacy mode. I obviously did on some old model, but forgot to switch it back

@CurryKitten
@CurryKitten 6 месяцев назад
Don't know - I don't have one sadly, so I can't test it. All the various brands that do this do so in a very similar way... at least from their own descriptions. I expect they all have their own slightly different inplementation - usually meaning (a bit like in this video) that it's either hard to tell the difference, or there are bits that one system does better and another where a different one will do better

Yep - it's pretty simple really. You need to have antenna in place with something that transmits. Analog goggle modules, HDzero goggles, these only receive, so you don't need to have antennas on. However, radios, Walksnail/DJI goggles all transmit, so you do need to have antennas on these
