Bryan, the 20 amps is NOT pulled from your kitchen outlet, it's what the battery need to be charged: for exemple, 6s 5000 mah at 4C will need 20 amps BUT at 24 volts DC. NOT at 120 volts AC. Beside, on a regular outlet, it should not exceed 12 amps on a standart 15 amp. circuit. (For safety factor). So, to make a long story short, your 6s battery voltage (24v.) times 20 amps totals 480 watts while your outlet can give you at least 120v X 12 amps. A total of 1440 watts. So you are far from the full capacity of your outlet power. 😁 But hey, great video dude, we learn a lot from your channel, beleive me! Thanks for your awesome work!

By far, the best, most informative, down to earth, spektrum tutorial on RU-vid. Super helpful. Answered every question I had and couldn’t find answers for on the spektrum site. Thank you for taking the time to actually explain in detail how the technology works. 👍🏽👍🏽

Thanks, and glad we could. This is an expensive investment, so we want to share what we know. Also, update till now, we've had pretty good luck with them too, and love the auto discharge feature, but as for puffing, if you can do less than the 240 hours (the absolute longest setting) for auto discharge, you'll have even better results ;) Love the SMART tech now, and sooooo glad we made the switch!

Awesome, thanks Jason! I think you'll like the way it work, "auto-start" for G2 packs is one nice feature of the firmware update. I didn't realize that was part of the update, but when you're done, you'll basically have a G2 charger! Also, not sure if you're aware, since I didn't mention it on the video, but you can upgrade even the simple S120 and S150 chargers! They're wired in that you have to hook up a battery to power them, or they won't connect to the PC...other than that, they TOO will charge G2 packs!

Glad we could help! Wish the cable was included with the chargers...not like they're super cheap... BUT I guess some won't ever do it no matter what...so HH thinks they can make it less expensive by not giving one to every customer that buys more than one charger.

Hi Brian, I just received my new Gen 2 S2200 charger and 4 3S 2200mah 30C batteries When I went to charge 2 of them. One of the channel saids the battery needed update. Which did not make sense. But I just follow the prompt and the charger updated the battery and proceed to charge it. End of the day. Even tho its expensive but the time it saves me in the long run. I think it's worth it. Thanks again for your videos

FWIW: I have the S1200 and purchased the update cable. Getting the correct driver to work with their S1200 update was an issue. They didn't provide it with the firmware package (and I have Win10). I had to download a different charger model's firmware, grab the driver and put it in the directory with the S1200 firmware update and got it to work that way. Would be very easy for HH to correct their firmware download package to properly include this. After the update, I like the new interface and I made sure to calibrate the settings (I have a high-end DVM to check with it). There will be an additional G2 specific update (with bug fixes) coming for these older G1 chargers according to Tom Cogswell (HH dude) soon. So I'll just update again then. Overall, I really like the improvements. Great video Brian (and camera crew)!

Hey Brian, love the channel and appreciate all the hard work you and the Camera Crew put into helping us out. Quick question, do you have any concerns about the increase in weight on the G2 packs? I noticed that some of the 4S packs are 50 to 60 grams heavier. Not sure how that will play out on the Night Timber’s and extra 300’s
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
I highly doubt it will be of any concern. I will measure the weights b/t two of them next time I film to show the difference on similar sized packs.

The charger isn’t going to trip your breaker. It’s not telling you the amount of amps going from the wall to the charger, it’s telling you the amps going from the charger to the battery. It’s easier to understand if you convert the power to watts. ampsXvolts=watts. So your wall has 20amps at 110volts which equals 2,200 watts of power. The battery only has around 22volts at 20amps which equals only 440 watts off power. So as you can see, you would be able to use multiple chargers on that circuit

Seems many of the Horizon planes are coming with telemetry to read the ESC voltage. Picked up a UMX Turbo Timber on sale and that even has it. I am able to fly a lot longer by watching actual voltage compared to running a timer.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
TOTALLY! That's, for me at least, the BIGGEST benefit of telemetry!
@robc5296
@robc5296 3 года назад
Great information, thanks so much. One question a can't get an answer to so far: If using a smart battery (gen 1 or 2) with a telemetry receiver but a standard ( not smart) ESC, do you get any voltage info back to a compatible transmitter during flight- either total or cell voltage? Some of the new versions of the mid price BNF planes are coming with a "telemetry" receiver but a standard (non- smart) ESC.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
Depends on the Rx. In the NEW Eflite T-28 1.1m you'll see in the second thoughts video, we get FULL telemetry of the lipo... PER CELL voltages, it's sweet!
@robc5296
@robc5296 3 года назад
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks so much for the response. Yes, the NEW T-28 comes with the AR631 which is a "telemetry" reciever but it also comes with a telemetry / smart ESC. My question is what happens with a standard ESC such at the NEW E-Flight F-15 Eagle - telemetry RX (AR630) but standard ESC( according to product description). If you could address in a future video that would be great. I can't get an answer from Spektrum or HH. Thanks again, great channel.

LOL! It’s mostly your fault that I got into fixed wing. Now 18 months later, I have a room and a garage full of things that fly and another separate storage area for the things that make those things fly and a wife who is much less forgiving of my “problem”. Hey Brian. Been watching your channel for awhile. I have a question. When you get the AS3X/SAFE planes from HH. Can you also just turn them both off? I got the Night Timber. PNP. Haven’t flown it yet. Except I don’t have a Spectrum Transmitter. Edit: I know I would to need one to use SAFE
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
AS3X (Stabilization) & SAFE (Auto-Leveling) run inside the Rx, and therefore control of the SAFE Select (where equipped) is just a standard channel. AS3X is the heart of SAFE, and can't be turned off in most BNF models. On some of the new more robust receivers, like the AR637T, you CAN set it up to be turned off and adjusted in flight, but on BNF models, this is not yet possible.

Hi Brian, starting back at scratch (so I have no batteries and chargers at the moment), if I went for the Gen 2 charger which looks absolutely brilliant and the new Gen 2 batteries is it necessary to have the Spektrum XBC100 battery checker then considering all the telemetry back to the radio. Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
Not a dumb question at all! The XBC100 will be almost essential if you need to test the packs, since there ISN'T any Balance lead. The Balance Lead is where we can tell what cell is what, and this is how we tell the health of the pack. Besides being "almost" necessary, this tool is AWESOME, and really affordable. If you bought NO Smart stuff, I'd still encourage you to get the XBC100, since it's such a great value, and works as a lipo tester and servo tester ;) G2 SMART Stuff bit.ly/3pYEPid XBC100 bit.ly/3pI3XcT

You can charge the G1 packs with adapters, but the G2...nope...you'll need the SMART PIN to communicate data from the chip to the charger. Sorry Trevor! I know the SMART tech is super pricey, and I agree...looks like HH might have bought the tech from iSDT, but gotta remember, all this stuff is built somewhere over in China, so when HH goes over and offers to buy a few thousand of these chargers from a plant, they will accommodate ;) Also, I believe HH carries iSDT too ;)

BUMMER Trevor!!! I hate that that cable wasn't included. You CAN balance charge, but can't use the full SMART features. Want to know a "dirty little secret"??? I can't tell you this, but if you have a pack that BALANCES ITSELF ALL THE TIME (like a SMART lipo) ....why couldn't you just hook up a parallel board, plug in a few SMART PACKS and start a charge sequence "without the balance lead"??? I suspect you could do it NO PROBLEMO...but you want to do it in the driveway, and have the kids there for the fireworks show the first time, JUST in case ;) PLEASE be super careful. Lipo's are the MOST dangerous part of this hobby, and one of the few things like COULD actually kill you (fire)...and I would feel terrible if you hurt yourself on account of my great idea...seriously. Good luck Trevor!

Technically, you can still do it. You just start the charger "without balance lead" and you can do it. Brian, I am new to aviation R/C but used to charge lipo’s for the kid’s R/C cars. Forgive me if these are dumb questions. However, I noticed you don’t use fireproof bags to charge your lipo’s. With the new chargers, is the risk so low you don’t really need them anymore? Also, I currently have 2 Smart 4S 3200 50C’s. If you were recharging them for multiple flights at the field, what is the highest rate of charge to safely charge the batteries for the least amount of time? Thank you for your time and expertise!
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
Not a dumb question!!! Lipo Fire-safe bags are recommended, but I find them extremely impractical. For example, HOW THE HECK Are you gonna reach the battery into the bag now??? To be totally honest, and in my personal opinion...the first and biggest safety rule of charging lipos is to do it while you're able to keep an eye on them. I can say that we're careful to do this, as many will charge in the garage, since most don't have a wife who lets them charge in their kitchen (I'm blessed!!!) Keep in mind, I DON'T Speak for Horizon Hobby on this in any way! You gotta operate within your own safety comfort level. I personally don't claim to be the best or worst at following lipo best safety practices, but I guarantee you can and probably will find people who say I'm "Mr-Danger" BUT I also guarantee there's some WAY MORE DANGEROUS guys out there. Here's my thing. SMART doesn't take away the inherit danger of a lipo, but it takes care of many of the primary issues around chemistry getting out of wack, which is, many times what causes lipo fires. Also, I'm careful with my lipo handling...something MANY are not. P.S. As with anything else you see on RU-vid - do whatever you do at your own risk!!!

Have you guys noted the price of these items compared to other brands with same or better performance and longevity?????

The price is high for everything right now. These packs get super pricey, but they're some of the best you can get right now.

Call Horizon - something is wrong. I would get it figured out ASAP. I have had mine stop a few times, but it's not after "a couple seconds" If you're charging a G1 pack, are you plugging in the balance lead? IF not, they will not automatically start, but you can force a chage without the balance lead.... As for the G2 packs, you should just have to plug them in. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE SMART PIN ALL THE WAY IN!!!! This can be missed if you don't get full penetration. I've caught myself doing it on the IC5's before...but it's hard to see.

Brian, Oh noooooo... not SMART Gen 2. I just getting used to Gen 1. Glad they have the option to upgrade the firmware. I know there still lots folks that not necessarily convinced but that’s ok. I just glad we have all the new tech out there to choose from if we so desire. 👊👍😊
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
I agree. G2 is a much harder sell at this point, for sure. I kinda like the balance lead, BUT - you will love the new UI on the charger after firmware update - it's basically a G2 (Awesome!) Percentage charged and Time to completion on the display (but this takes a few seconds, FYI)

@payitfwdrcl6171 3 года назад
@@BrianPhillipsRC Sweet. Yeah, I may end up with one or two of the Gen 2 chargers before it’s over with because of the built in power supplies. Then after I pull that trigger, they’ll come out with a Gen 3. HAHA.

does a dumb battery still have time until charged?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 2 года назад
Humm, I've never noticed... That's actually "TIME CHARGED" not time left...sorry....I had to check ;) As for dumb batteries - same on both types. There's a percentage left on both too.

Its very frustrating that the chargers dont include an update cable, and they have been out of stock everywhere forever. I imagine they sold out fast simply because of the G2 update.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 года назад
Quite possibly. I believe the NEW ones use a usb charger cable, but the old ones use that goofy USB to Headphone cable...which is a USB to SERIAL cable, fyi. I use such items in my industrial technician job, so I wonder how hard it would be to make one???

I recieved the Spektrum Smart S1100 AC Charger, 1x100W today along with two 14.8V 3200mAh 4S 30C Smart LiPo batteries and the damn thing doesn't recognize either one's balance cables and wouldn't do a manual charge. After updating to V1.0.0.30 it still would not recognize the balance cables but would perform a manual charge. The balance cable is installed in the far left side of the port as the instructions state. Kinda scary that it can be inserted anywhere laterally in the row of pins. So far I'm not very impressed with quality control.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH - Be careful!!! Don't burn your house down trying to fix this if it doesn't work right away. Please do this at your own risk, but be careful. Do it on a hard surface, in the garage if in question (NOT next to the gas cans - LOL). I don't want to hear about you getting hurt or burning your house down. - You know I have to say this. I think I know what's going on. This happened to me on one of my 4S packs too, but it was like 1 of 50 so I assumed it was a fluke, so here's what I found... Test the balance of the cells. They CAN actually fall out of range if they sit TOO long OR they can also OVER discharge if there's a malfunction of the SMART chip. If the cells are below a certain threshold...like 2.5VDC or so, the charger doesn't "SEE" them so it throws a "Cell Mismatch" or "No Balance Lead" error or something like that - It's been a while, and I can't replicate it to say the exact nomenclature. See if you can follow this procedure, and you'll get her back into range in like 2 minutes, then you can just charge up and use like normal... Test each cell (use a DMM if you have too), then see WHAT cell is below say 3VDC...then CHARGE that CELL like it's a 1S pack, but you may have to "Trick" the charger into getting it up (Sounds bad).... and make sure you're sitting there WATCHING this step. Charge LOW and SLOW for a few minutes and it'll come up. Then when that CELL is back to 3VDC or so, you can try again, and it'll work on the SMART CHARGER from there on out. I have a video about this on my OLD packs, since I had to deal with this all the time before, but now It's almost a non-existent problem, with all my SMART packs...but I understand totally how pissed you must be - I'm pissed when I get a FREE one and it didn't work right away. If you want to see that video about how to charge ONE CELL, here's a link - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DP1-VBNJmsg.html ...BUT first, I'd call and get a few replacement lipos coming! I don't care what they say, they need to be shipping this premium priced stuff in 100% Tip Top condition. This is not good for anyone, and I'm SURE they'll be super embarrassed and want to make it right. Snap a few pictures, or take a real short clip of the situation NOW, then when you call you can say, here's the evidence....here's my address - send new lipos ASAP! I know HH will be thrilled with me giving this advice, but if I were running the show over there, I can say I'd be PISSED at my supplier for sending me a bunk pack - so as long as you share the experience with them, they'll either make it right, or you can return the stuff (except they don't take them back ;) if you're reading what I'm laying down)

I would be annoyed too, but not sure exactly how to fix it. This software update (on the battery) is SUPPOSED to be somewhat automatic, provided the firmware on the charger is up to date.

Your kitchen circuit breaker maximum wattage is 2400w and the charger is 380w no way it will blow the circuit breaker, if the charge rate is 20A it’s within the 380w range because watt=voltagexcurrent
