Hi all,
in todays video I am trying to help my subscribers with their problem cases.
To participate in part 3 please:
- Send an email to enquiries@sydneyplantguy.com and use subject matter 'Dr SPG'
- Include a video (max. 1m long) or photos of your plant & the area it is in. If your video is already on social media you can just include a link. If your content it too large to attach to an email, you can use wetransfer.com/ for free
- please include plant ID if possible
- in the body of your email provide detail about the history of the plant and the conditions it is grown in (e.g.: I received the plant in the mail 2 days ago etc)
- Please include your name (if you want) and where you are from
I will try my best to feature as many submissions as possible in the video but please note that my knowledge around plants is limited to the type of plants I grow myself (mainly aroids)! I have no care tips to share about a Fiddle Leaf Fig for example so don’t waste your time asking about them 😂😉

Keep up the great content Dr. SPG!! Quick reminder to nutrient deficiency questions, if your coco chips/ coir has not been pre soaked with Cal/Mag ( bought from pet store rather than garden center) this can cause nutrient lockout out that looks a lot like the yellow leaf edges seen today. Magnesium needed for lush green leaves. Happy growing everyone!!🍀
@sydneyplantguy
@sydneyplantguy 21 день назад
Good reminder :) BUT, i believe if nutrients are provided with weekly watering it's quite unlikely to see such extreme signs of nutrient deficiency! But certainly more likely with coco chips than moss :)

Thanks Jan, great info as always. ❤ I noticed that Corinne ?spelling, from Brissie, with multiple plants turning yellow, mentioned that she sprays them with neem oil every watering. I wondered if this might be contributing ? Just a thought. 😷🤕❤️‍🩹🚑🏥⛑️💊🩹🩺

Hellooo :) I saw your question and wanted to answer it. The German RU-vidr 'PlentyPlants' has an incredible number of beautiful anthuriums and once treated them with neem oil, after which the leaves turned yellow. Her assumption was that the neem oil clogs the pores and the leaves can no longer breathe and therefore turn yellow. So I think there is definitely a connection, I have had the same experience. Hope this helps 😊

🏥People always push “more light” but like you say, sometimes less light is the fix for problems. I have mistakenly put some philodendrons in too much light and end up needing to restart them even after moving them back from the light source. Love the Doc SPG series! 😊

On the golden crocodile - my jungle boogie- narrow scape and ring of fire do the same thing. It might also be an edema from inconsistent watering. That’s what my local shop thought. I put my narrow scape outside over the summer and it has stopped getting them. Also- since you’re in Kentucky, you might be able to find a contact at your local UKY agriculture center to take the plant into. I live in Nashville and UT has a local office where they will check your plant put and diagnose it for around $20.

I actually had the same thing happen as the person with the philodendron golden violin. My very mature philodendron maximum who'd been growing leaves from cataphylls for over a year suddenly threw out one random leaf where the next one was emerging from its petiole. Never found out why it did that but all the other ones emerged normally again.

"Hospital emoji" 🤣 I couldn't find one. Great video, as always the highlights are your honesty and your obvious enjoyment of other people's plant efforts and successes. You're never critical of your viewers, so I hope you just give any negatives the attention they deserve...zero. Maybe as more see this some can contribute to the problem plants too. I had a problem with invisible mites(not spider mites) causing all new growth to fail, till I gave them a hot shower. Hot enough to still handle the plant under the running water without burning myself. They all improved, a red Philo( congo?), a green dragons tooth, and a raphidofora tetrasperma. Never saw a pest on them. Thanks for sharing, you must be a great comfort to ones worried about possible problems that might not be. Problems. Enjoy spring!!!

🏥 Thanks Jan for all your amazing advice. I need to go treat my Ring of Fire right now! It has the same little rust colored dots. I have wondered what causes it. But I guess not concerned enough to cause me to look into it. But now I know what to do. I just want to say Sorry for all the crazy idiots out there that feel they need to tell you to do more research and study in order to answer people questions. You’ve done this “Hobby” extensively for more years than it takes someone to get a Bachelor’s degree in College in any given field. Not sure If there is a degree in house plant care, or Moss Poles or AROIDs (ok probably not) BUT…THERE SHOULD BE!!!! Cause you definitely would have earned it. You know tons about this stuff Jan. I honestly appreciate all the time you put into your videos. It’s what brings me back week after week. I started my adinsonii with 3 vines that then splitted into 5, I lost one on the first chop and extend and might loose another one with the next one. And I think that's good because my pole is a bit on the skinny side and I don´t think there is room for all the roots 😅 but I also might chop one vine because it´s about 40cm longer than the others and will reach the top of the pole son. I would like to keep 2-3 vines on the pole in general. I do use velco on most nodes to make sure the roots have contact with the moss and the vines don´t go over each other but stay nice and parralel. but then the roots grow into the moss right away and I keep moving the velco up to the newest node regularly.

18:25 I have similar problems specifically with variegated Micans. I had parts or whole leaves get thin or mushy. I always thought it was burning, since mine is standing in sunlight at room conditions. But if it's the same in a cabinet... Maybe this plants variegation is just really sensitive. I have made the experience that if a leaf managed to grow out and harden completely, it tends to stay unimpressed. Even fully white/variegted leaves can stand light and just develop a little bit of protective red. But if it's getting damage while unfurling: No chance. I'm trying to keep baby leaves shaded, but even then they sometimes get a little "watery"/transparent. I did have the thought of it pulling to much water, since my humidity is not high. Would love to hear how others do it.
@kathywereszczynski7106
@kathywereszczynski7106 21 день назад
I also suspect the Micans spot on leaves is too much water where the plant swells and cells burst the variegated part will be hit first.

Not only do I love how informative and encouraging your channel is, you are also a savage when it comes to handling the trolls 😂🤣😂 As usual I've learnt a lot from your videos and will often refer back to them when I'm not sure/confident about something. Thank you Sydney Plant Guy 🪴(maybe I should start using your name🤔) and cuddles to a cat name Brad😻 🏥
