Game info:
Sphinx And The Cursed Mummy is an original 3rd person action-adventure inspired by the mythology of ancient Egypt. Travelling the world via magical portals to foil the evil plans of Set, Sphinx's journey will require all his wits, agility, and special powers. He will also rely on his reluctant hero friend, The Mummy, to help when being inconspicuous is the only solution. By finding the stolen magical crowns of Egypt, Sphinx can stop Set and save the world.

@@TheGingiGamer the best possible scenario at this point is a remake similar to what Ubisoft is doing with PoP: SoT ( which doesn't look that good honestly, plus that franchise is in need of a reboot rather than a remake imo)

Thank for the coverage. I played this game on the GameCube and had a blast. Having never played a Zelda game, I remember Sphinx being a fun adventure with lots of puzzles. Not difficult for experienced gamers but a beautiful game that captures the sounds and scenes of ancient Egypt.

I doubt they’ll happen but I’m honestly hoping for ports of the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger trilogy as well as Pokemon Colosseum/Gale of Darkness. And Spyro of course, which is more likely.

Thanks for the review. I took a chance on this shortly after release and loved it. The Mummy puzzles were terrific, and the Sphinx part was lots of fun. Great game.

I played this in 2006 at the age of 9, fell in love with it then on ps2 and only just got it on re release on xbox one x, I'm ready to fall in love again

I played this on PS2 and would always revisit it throughout the years. I loved how tough some of the puzzles were. I don't think they were unfairly difficult, the game just made you figure everything out on your own.

I loved this game so hard as a kid, even tough it was hard as hell on some parts. It lacked audio support in form of dialogue but the world was well thought out and super fun to explore

"if it had a new coat of paint" Looking at the footage, and having played it on the PS2, this is a new coat of paint. Now I have to look at see if the patched out some of the game breaking bugs. There were instances where if you talked to the wrong save point or tried to backtrack when you shouldn't have, you'd be unable to progress the game at all.

I Don't have a Switch console yet but I plan on getting one sometime soon and of course I want to get Zelda and this game which I still have on my PlayStation two and I even recently played it about six months ago and I was shocked at how good the game still holds up even on the PS2 and very happy that Nintendo has decided to put it out on their system and I just can't wait to replay it again with slightly better graphics what a hidden gem!

I remember playing this with my brother (or mostly watching my little brother play it, since I'm no gamer lol). I liked the puzzle + action mechanics. Such nostalgia!

This game is underrated and was dismissed for many reasons. People bitching abount voiceless characters, like previous Zelda games were voiceless and yet memorable. This is the only game that makes me feel alive and simply changed me in many ways. One of the last platform games I ever played. Best era for a simple kid like me.

I played this game when it first came out and loved it, and picked it up again just the other day for nostalgia (I had NO idea it had been remastered for Switch...too late now, I'm knee-deep in the GC version lol). I had no idea how it would hold up today and was half-expecting to go "how did I ever like this, it's so dated and bad" but no! It MORE than holds up today! I'm actually amazed at how well-made it is; whenever I jump for a rope or a hanging ledge I'm clenched, expecting the hitbox to be off or to glitch through something like is prevalent in todays games but no, everything runs perfectly and it's so refreshing. The animations are so fluid, the areas are well designed...it looks rough now, but for it's day it honestly looks pretty damn good. All I'm thinking this whole time is "Damn, Western game devs just don't make stuff like this any more". I'm so happy to see someone experiencing it for the first time, unblinded by nostalgia, enjoying this gem from my childhood!

DAMN! I hate cliffhangers! I've been playing through the PS2 version and mostly enjoying it so far, but knowing that there's a cliffhanger is really going to take the enjoyment out of it for me. :(

I was playing it on the stone old xbox arcade back when i was a shild. I enjoyed it and till now as an adult i still think about playing it on current gen. What i loved most about the game is the design of the beach sides and the capture functionality.

When this re-relase was announced, a few friends told me the game was pretty good, but I thought it was nostalgia talk. Seeing the video and your review (great as always), I can see this is indeed pretty good! I might grab it on sale, looks like a very fun game.

I played this on the ps2 back in the day and thought that it was a very good game. The thing that impressed me the most was how gorgeous it looked. Really the only main flaw was the lack of voice acting.

When I was in elementary school, I played a lot of Nintendo games with my neighbor but one day we decided to play his Xbox instead. His mom wouldn't let us play Halo (which his dad had) because of the blood, so we got to play Sphinx instead. I totally forgot about this game until they made it backwards compatible on Xbox One over this last summer and I started playing it again recently. Been loving every minute of it.

I originally played it on ps2 back in 2004 when i was five. This game stuck in my head for over 10 years till i bought it for my original xbox. It's an underrated classic and i looks fantastic for the time.

I played this way back on the GameCube. I could swear I red a magazine that said Sphinx had a transformation into a Sphinx-like form, but I can't find it again. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I do remember looking for that magazine and form thing back then.

Even though 90s - 00s platformers are like my fav genre I never got to play this game as a kid, even though I’d heard of it. I’d seen it a few times before but I never could find it. But I just bought it today for the Switch and I’m really enjoying it so far. You weren’t kidding when you said it doesn’t hold your hand, lol. As far as remastered 3D Zelda clones on the Switch made by THQ Nordic go, I honestly prefer Legend of Kay but that’s really only because of nostalgia and my love for games like Okami. But I realize Sphinx is the better game by a long shot.

I remember Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy vividly due to having played it while fishing on the dock behind my apartment.. I was about 12 and had a little old box tv that was prolly the size of a laptop screen. I would bring this tv and my Gamecube down to the docks set them up then after casting my line out and putting the pole iin the fishing holder and would play Sphynx while waiting for a fish to bite LOL

This game had come included in a GameCube box my parents got for me and my brother and sisters when we were soo very young. By far it was the most memorable and amazing game we played. We would always replay it and enjoyed it. But sadly the game started to stop working after a certain point in the game. I thought we wouldn't be able to play Sphinx, unless I buy it off of eBay. Overtime we just forgot about it and occasionally played it up until it where it would stop working. Just by shere luck, i stumbled upon a paper at my local game stop and saw that it was coming back in the switch. Needless to say me and my brother got excited and even my sisters(who dont even have an interest in playing games) were excited to play. I bought not too long ago (bout 6hrs ago) and it just brings back soo many memories. Some things changed, some bugs here and there, but its still fun and amazing just like back then. If u havent bothered playing it, just try it out and if u h8 it, well u h8 it. Funny though, when I went to my gamestop, they only had one copy because no one had reserved a copy xD, but I know theres fans out there that enjoyed this game xD.

Loved this game as a kid I actually just started a replay and was stuck and discovered they re-released it years ago and I got it on switch today for $8. It definitely looks miles better than on the original Xbox and does have some quality of life improvements where updates didn’t exist in the past that have been fixed on this port. Great game

I played this in 2014 years after now it's on switch bought it for 19.99 the regular price omg it's def more beautiful games back then had more art to them it's graphics are so much better and very great ost I'm addicted to this but ai miss the Xbox GameCube and PS2 genre fun times it's so great to see these games back remastered I'm excited for fatal frame 4 next year def getting it for oled and Nintendo has done the best ports this game is fun and I remember it back in the day and never got it till years after and played on ps2 in 2014.....idk why I missed this when I had a GameCube but having it now digital along with shantae pirates curse they all look best on Nintendo very great games and graphics your lucky.......no wait I got it on sale too HAHA my bad had to grab it for 9.99$ I'm so glad I'm not the only one that enjoys these remastered games that's what's great not these rushed cash grabs with robotic looking graphics......I have re2 remake that was disappointing to even look at they could easily remaster the originals like Sphinx 😁

Also, I am going to say things that you forgot to mention. You didn’t mention the fact the game’s save mechanic. Also, calling this game “not particularly challenging” is an insult to this game; the difficulty for this game defined differently than most games and you named how hey don’t directly tell you what to do next and the saving system like I mentioned. Also, comparing this to Zelda is not a good comparison to make; it plays differently enough from Zelda. Also I grew up playing this game and I can say this is actually a pretty challenging game for modern standards in my opinion

This was one of my all-time favorite Gamecube games, and one of my top hopes that it would be released on the Switch. It finally happened and I'm playing it now, and it's every bit as fun as I remember! I'm not surprised it was chosen for re-release, it's such a well-crafted game with creative puzzles and really lovely graphics. I'm so excited to be playing it again!

Oh and to add, I do agree that $30 is a bit on the high side for a 15-year-old game, but I was happy to pay it, having played the game before and knowing what I was getting. It's a little high, but worth every penny.

Very nice review! This was an amazing hidden gem from back in the day. Once I heard it was being remastered on the switch I immediately traded in RDR2 for this to relive nostalgia. Cant decide if I should open it up or not.

I found out about the game thanks to nitro rad and I was excited when I saw it was coming soon for switch. Playing it reminded me of similar action adventure games from the GameCube era, obstacles that took me forever to figure out (like that boulder part in the tutorial). When I was a kid, If I got stuck at a certain part, I would erase my file and start over because I must have missed something or I don’t want to face this obstacle so I will just leave and mess around.

Just a btw, in the story his brother is actually kept captive in the castle of Uruk and Set used him as a disguise. So that means that his brother did nothing wrong. Oh and the textures are really improved than the original in the new port. And the story would of been even bigger if they would of finished it. They scrapped like half of the game because of time constraints.

I did hear about the game back in the day when it was new, but I completely passed it up because I was a teenager with no personal income at the time. Believe it or not, I have the PC version of the game I got on a Steam sale, but I have yet to install and play it. By the way, has that infamous save bug been fixed yet?

Testing it out on Steam myself, yes the save bug is patched. I also have th GC and PS2 versions, and will pick up the Switch version. Once they announce a PS4/XBONE version, I'll pick that one up too.

I am thinking this is a game I loved on PS2 back in 2002-2004. I could never remember the name of the game. I am 99% sure this is it. as a guy in high school I played the Mortal Kombat games, Manhunt, devil may cry 1 &2.. and this. that's what I remember from my ps2 days. my fondest days of gaming after WoW during the Wrath of the Lich King days.

Played this back on the Gamecube, and then again when it became backwards compatible on 360 (where it was missing shadows, similar to this on it appears). Wouldn’t mind this on portable.

I found this game in a KB Toys bargin bin back in 2003 for $20 and honestly it was the best $20 I've ever spent. So when i heard it came out on the switch, I was both surprised and delighted. The only thing that did disappoint me about the swich version is that the textures wernt improved/cleaned up from the 2003 PS2 version since i love the stylized design of the game world.

@@SwitchWatch Yeah, their were also some audio glitches that showed up in Tut's palace and Heliopolis that wasn't their in the PS2 version.

I believe I heard about the game in Troldspejlet back in the day (Danish TV program about new games, books and other nerdy stuff, used to watch it weekly before the internet became what it is now). Also, seems The Missing ripped off this game with the whole "setting yourself on fire and electrocuting yourself to solve puzzles" gimmick.

Thank you for reviewing this I had the original GameCube version when it came out. I bought the switch version cuz I don't have my old copy anymore I may have played it a bit too much and scratched up the disc. Honestly I was really hoping for a sequel I've been waiting for a sequel for years at the least they could add DLC to fix the ending if they're not going to take the time to love the game enough to make a sequel that is just as good.

A sequel would be cool, but I'm not sure the property owner would be interested. They are more in the business of ports rather than sequels right now.

That's a steep fee! I think I'll pick up a GameCube copy for $10. Also, I'm in the same club. I played a lot of games on my GameCube back in the day (and now) and would visit block buster a lot too, but I never remember seeing this game.

Thanks.. have a mint copy for the xbox which works on my 360 (one of the titles before they stopped updating the backwards compatibility)..Honestly it looks just as good as this one.... wanted to see if anything new worthwhile in the switch version but seems to be the same game. Cheers!

I had this game for PS2 back in the day - even then, it felt apart from other games on the shelf, not necessarily in a good or bad way, but just a different way. I'd like to take another run at it nowadays, when I was a kid, I got stumped on a few of the puzzles and just gave up. I didn't have much patience for it.

I wanted to scope out how they had improved it, if at all, from the original game back in the day before I went in on it. But, now that the price has dropped (Nintendo has it listed for $20 USD), I may just have to pick it up for old time's sake.

Given that Eurocom went through all the trouble a number of characters detailed lip movements, voice acting must have been planned but either there wasn't enough time, money, or Eurocom was being picky about the voice actors (not that I blame them). Sadly, voice-overs would not be possible in a mere rerelease. I wonder if a sequel would have explored the complex nature of Ancient Egypt's gods of chaos and order. I also wonder if THQNordic ends up getting a remake made, would it be more accurate to Ancient Egypt's mythology? Horus was frequently pitted against his uncle Set, but in the game he the god's ally. However, Anubis is typically favored as a villain, but in the game he turns out to be a good guy. Eurocom must have known they were going to cheat like hell.

SwitchWatch so far just played the beginning, these type of games I'm not big on but because of nostalgic reasons I bought it and it's creative so far and reminds me of the past when games don't hold your hand.

also you can get a lot of cool developement notes about the game aswell, like the fact at one point in the original developement for the game a lock on feature was planned, however it was scrapped due to the parent publishing company cutting the developement time, which actually lead to heaps of cut content. Same thing goes for voice acting, it was planned however it was scrapped early on due to lack of funding for decent voice actors. Also the reason the re-release is a little lackluster in additions is mainly due to there only being a single developer behind the re-release itself. Also on at least the PC port, textures are still being upped, it's just a slow process due to things still getting fixed up to make the game run smoother. theres also a lot of other neat things like that about the game discussed on the server, pre-warning though, if you or anyone reading does join, the server can seem a little dead mainly due to there not being as many people as people expect on verified discord servers.

I played it back in the day, but stopped playing after only about 30 minutes and gave it to a freind. I was impatient back then, and frankly, I hated the Egyptian theme and character design and was petty enough back then to care about that. I purchased it for the Nintendo Switch again a few days ago and I am really enjoying it as an adult rather than a teen.
