Harrison was a cool cat on the radio. This is a spot from 15WLAC Nashville Tn around 1979 era....he moved to California ..and now he is back in Nashville on the Hippie station as of 2012.
I use to make alot of recordings of the radio back in the 70's for fun....

I just ran into this in almost mid 2022. Me and my wife, Leslie live in Gallatin, TN. Covid-19 hit our country, we have Inflation and Ridiculous Gas Prices. I'm semi retired, my wife gets to work from home for a major worldwide corporation while I just repair and pittle with old radio equipment. We looked at buying the old Randy's Record Shop building, but it was in such shambles, it was too costly for us to restore and go into debt for it. I think it was Greg Hayes of the Gallatin City Council that made the move to demolished it. All that is in it's place now is a new paved lot. At my age, no more debt anyway.

Hi Tony, I sure will. I talked to Spider this afternoon, and he is coming to back to Nashville for a longer stay, and he is going to visit my station and my family. He has a music video project he has been working on for the Servce People who are in the Military, risking their lives for us. You can hear him Monday through Friday on WHPY-FM, Hippie 94.5, plaing the Oldies. I have a hard time getting that station in Gallatin because the Cookeville Station on 94.7 bleeds over on Hippie 94.5

I talk to Spider once every two weeks. Yes, he is out in L.A., but he is doing middays on Nashville Radio Station WHPY-FM (Hippie 94.5), He voice tracks the daily show for Nashville from out there. I have know Spider since I was in High School. I was a "Student Intern" at WLAC/WQKB in the spring of 1980. When Sudbrink Broadcasing out of Miami bought the two stations from Billboard, they ran me off, and most of the jocks left. Spider tried to do talk radio on WLAC, it just wasn't for him.

I lived next door to WLAC for a large part of my life ('71-94'). My parents still live there. We used to trek through the creek and the high grass to go and bang on the door and make a request of the DJ. We didn't need a radio though because we could hear the radio through the faucets in our house...lol. Gotta love galvanized receivers!

The studios were nowhere near a creek or high grass.

Hi Tony, What Spider does is "Vocie Tracking". It's being done in the radio industry all over the country. D.J.'s can voice track a 5 hour show in about 20-30 minutes. Spider does all his voice tracking for Hippie 94.5 in his home studio in L.A. He does come back to Nashville and he's promised me he would go to dinner with my wife & my mother. We all three own Magic 1560 WMRO-AM in Gallatin. If you still want to interview him, let me know. Go to radio station's website and drop us an email.

This nighttime Rock/R&B Mix format worked locally here in Nashville at night for a few years, but FM came along with WBYQ (now WQQK) 92Q being the first full time Top 40 Rock/Pop Station on FM, followed then in 1978, 104.5 WHIN-FM became WWKX "Kicks 104" with a hot Top 40-Rock/Pop Format, Today its WGFX 104.5, The Zone with a sports format. In the 70s, there was 103 WKDF that was popular mainly with white males doing a AOR Format as well. 103 WKDF started picking up females in Nashville as well. This FM trend was going on all over the country. WLAC's ratings at night dip very low in the Nashville Market. The station was sold with it's sister FM. WLAC went news/talk in the Fall of 1980, it never looked back. It's what 1510 WLAC is today.

@scott. Yep those were the ones I grew up with. Had a sticker from 92Q and a big blue one from 104. Great stuff back then. Really miss Rock 106 too.

Thanks for posting this. Back in the 70s I was an obsessive AM DXer, but had my favorite stations and DJs. WLAC's R&B was my favorite, and Spider was my man. I never managed to get a recording of that promo/ID of "Spider Harrison" sung by a robotic voice. For some reason, I think of that clip often. Thanks to you, I have it now!

If I remember right, when 1510 WLAC changed from Top 40-Rock to News/Talk in the Fall of 1980, that was the beginning of the demise of Randy's Record Shop. I bought one more album there in the early 80s, Saxon's "Denim and Leather", which was released in 1981. I know the historical marker sign for Randy's Record Shop and WLAC still stand there by the road today. I live about 1 1/2 mile from there. WLAC sounds so bad now on AM, iHeart got them a FM Translator on 98.3, and they are telling the audience to move from 1510 AM to 98.3 FM. Now, iHeart is trying to sell all of the 28 acres of WLAC's Transmitter Site property but holding on to a four acre easement for WLAC's transmitter building and towers. My opinion is, what does that tell us? WLAC I guess only makes any money when Sean Hannity is on (like him or not) and WLAC's Heritage with Randy's Record Shop has faded out into the sunset. FM and Streaming has taken over. Just my opinion.

@Scott. Was that the big tower that I saw on the way to Cool Springs on I-65? That's where alot of farm land is or was. I lived in Green Hills.

@@TonyBeazley Hi Tony, That big tower you saw belongs to 650 WSM-AM, home to the Grand Ole Opry. That big, diamond shape tower was built in 1932, and still in use today. There is a small tower that stands beside it when tower climbers need to do maintenance on that big WSM Tower, WSM switches to the small tower and uses 5,000 Watts until the tower climbers are done. On the big tower, of course WSM is 50,000 Watts. WLAC's Transmitter Site is located on Old Hickory Boulevard and Dickerson Pike, north of Downtown Nashville. WLAC moved to that site in 1941 under the FCC's NARBA Agreement of 1941 where WLAC was on 1470 with 5,000 Watts, they were allowed to moved to 1510 with a power increase to 50,000 Watts that year, and their current tower/transmitter site was built. Many other stations shifted in frequency that year to expand the AM band. The WSM tower and transmitter site is like a museum. I've been there twice. My wife works in Brentwood, not far from Cool Springs off I-65. You can see the big WSM tower from the building she works in.

WLAC-AM's signal is directional at night protecting WUFC in Boston, which both stations are co-channel. WLAC is 50 KW, Non-Directional Day, and uses a three tower array at night, directional, with most of the signal going south or straight north, but a null to the northeast and northwest. WLAC, pre WWII days was on 1470, which is now occupied by Nashville's WVOL, which went on in 1951. WLAC got to move in the early 40's to 1510 and granted what we call these days as a "Class A" AM Facility.

GEEZ, just ran into this posted 5 years later. Oh well, I'm semi retired now. I was in middle school or just about into high school (I think) when this was recorded. I got my start in radio at WRVU 91.1, back when Vanderbilt Student Communications own the 91.1 frequency. We had 400 watts and covered Davidson County fairly well. At that time, they allow non-students to cover shifts because the students were too busy. I'm semi retired now, near my mid 50s. Over 25 years ago, me and my Dad, William "Bill" Bailey bought the old WWGM and moved it to Gallatin. As of this post, I guess it's been 25 or 26 years ago we did that. Dad passed in February of 2007. It's now WMRO, Magic 1560, a 1,000 Watt Daytime Station. Me, my wife, Leslie, and my mom, Sandra own it. Tony Richards (the owner of Hippie 94.5) bought WHIN. Spider is still Voice Tracking for him on Hippie. I try to stay in touch with him. Tony Richards and Spider Harrison are the nicest two men in radio in this area. Tony Richards and his wife are good people! I rather just have an AM Daytime Only Station, less stress. WHIN has a FM on 100.7 now. WHIN is the number one station in Sumner County! With 1560 WMRO, I'm just having fun. It's more of a hobby than a business.
