Arborist Rigging Techniques | Spider Leg: Basic Setup
Here's what you need to know to set this up:
1. The Spider Leg: this is a piece of rope that is 20-25% smaller in diameter than the main line. It usually has a very long, weirdly large splice in the end, to make it easy to set on the rigging line using the Klemheist hitch. If you don't want to pay for a 'proper' Spider leg balancer, you can make your own out of a piece of rated cordage, and just tie a long loop knot in the end.
2. Attach the spider leg to the main line. I prefer the klemheist, but there are other options, such as a prusik, or a Blake's hitch.
3. After identifying the balance point of the piece, tie the main line way out towards the tips, and tie the spider leg down at the butt (or vise versa).
4. Slide the klemheist up or down the main line to place it roughly over top of the balance point.
5. Adjust everything so that when you tension up the main line before making the cut, both the main line, and the spider leg, are tight. It's very important that there is no slack in either leg of rope between where it's tied to the piece, up to the klemheist.
6. When you cut the piece off, if you have set it up correctly, the piece will maintain the orientation that it had, and won't invert or flip over either way.

Loved this video. Especially the end of it with the self criticism, very comical education for rough neck tree working climbers💪😎

Sweet! Spider leg kicks a$$! I’ve been learning from your videos, I’ve climbed for several years but never really progressed in my knowledge and skill level because I was never exposed to any other climbers to learn from and I never watched any videos of climbers but I learn really fast from watching and I have developed a real passion for climbing and learning new things. Your videos are awesome and they are fun to watch and great to learn from please keep em coming and climb safe Brother. GOD Bless 🙏😇

I'm really enjoying seeing these rigging techniques. I'm an offshore diver and love seeing rigging techniques using rope. We're using 1/2" poly most of the time, so we're limited by its strength, but I'm always looking for new knots, techniques, or systems to make my job easier and more productive.

I do like a well ballanced limb ! I've been messing around cradling lowers for too long now without a spider leg. A pain in the ass to set up for me, and harder for the ground staff to untie. I'll have to 'improvise' one of these too ! Good job 👏

Outstanding Pat, I regularly do the same thing on long laterals. I use 8mm O.P as my spiderleg and usually 12/14mm Teufelberger rigging rope. I usually use a prussik knot or a blakes with a stopper.

Oh my goodness the old a team theme , that really got my memory banks going back a few years. I often explain to tree people, that the spider leg configuration. Is super helpful, in many ways . I’m often told that it’s a waste of time 🙈 I personally don’t think so, doing a good correct job , with good knots etc , is always an A+ thought , for both myself and the crew and the client. even if it just takes an extra steps and an extra few minutes. When a job is done right the first time there’s no going back for repairs.

I used to do the same thing all the time with a Blake’s hitch. Then I built a 3/8 Tenex one with a 6” spliced eye. Works way better. I’m building one for my GRCS with a round master ring and 2x12’ amsteel legs with hooks. It’ll be pretty savage.

Great video. It is said the spider rigging rope is better at least 2 mm less than then main rigging rope. Is that correct ? Or it is ok to use the same thickness spider rigging rope with the main rigging rope ? Thx
