Spider-Man 3 (2007) Retrospective / Review 

Sam Raimi’s effort on this film is commendable, overall the trilogy is timeless.

With all it’s flaws this movie had a lot to say a lot about Revenge, forgiveness, redemption and grandiosity. Plus it’s not that bad, it’s alike a 6 or 7/10 and man those visuals aged very well

Now this puts some dirt in my eye.

Underrated and personally my favorite of the trilogy.

I actually enjoyed Spider-Man 3, though it did feel overlong even at the time. I think it was the fact that my expectations were pretty low, not because I didn't like the first two but just because it felt like a long gap between the second and third and I really had forgotten a lot of the story. By the way, the symbiote in the comics came from the Secret Wars series. Jameson's son became Werewolf by Night, not Venom

Forcing Raimi to include Venom was a mistake. Venom is a villain for his own movie, maybe even two films. If it were just Sandman and Harry, it might have worked better.

I agree that the action scenes and music are great in this movie. Sadly something greatly missing in the MCU films. Probably because Peter doesn't have anyone he can physically fight like Venom, Rhino, Kraven.... Maybe I sort of prefer spiderman 3 over the MCU films in some aspects

You can tell there is a good movie somewhere in there but it feels overstuffed with backstories & villans and could have been split into two films. If they would have kept the black suit, harry osborn back story, and maybe keep the Sandman as the main villan while saving Venom for Spiderman 4 could have made sense.

This was definitely a sequel that got better with time. The Spider-hype kicked into overdrive after Spider-Man 2 was such a huge success. It made the third one seem lame by comparison. Now, it feels like a greater achievement than it was initially given credit for.

I adore Spiderman 3. Time just goes so fast, man. Already about twenty years since it came out. I love Harry's arc, I love the metal pipe scene in the high rise near the end, and just think 3 is fantastic.

For all its faults, I would definitely choose watch it over the two Amazing Spider-Man films any day.

Apparently the end battle was RADICALLY different where in when Peter shoots the web to free Eddie from Venom, instead what Pete pulls out was a Venom like Skull that speaks to Peter saying "It never wanted me, it wanted u! It always wanted u" Peter then turns as a voice says "Never wound what u can't Kill!" And that was the actual final battle Peter trying to fight Venom, whose was trying to more violently and viciously bond with Spider-Man again

My favourite part of this movie? Emo Peter dancing.

I love all 3 of Sam Raimi's Spiderman. The darker tone of the 3rd one felt right as it explored aspects of Spiderman's personality that had only been played out in the comic books up until that time.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. At the time, I wasn’t that into it. Now I love this movie.

Also retconning Sandman into Uncle Ben's killer was a terrible decision.

The editor cut certainly helps though not a whole lot. I still felt I like I was watching the same film but it did cut some controversial scenes and added a few new scenes that were substantial. Overall I still enjoy this film in-spite of its flaws.

Great job as usual! I agree, I love the score. It’s definitely one of the highlights of the entire film. I had been looking forward to this film and was disappointed much like everyone else. What is next for you? The dark Knight? Thanks for all that you do! Keep up the great work!

The FX artist behind the sandman used to circulate his development video for the shaders in late 2000s. It was some bananas shit. Incredible how much thought went into it.

I got to meet Cliff Robertson when he came to visit his old college in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He went out to eat at the local fine dining restaurant where I was maitre de in 2008. He was incredibly gracious but also very frail and feeble at the time. I remember his eyes were watery and he needed to sit down immediately. Such a nice man and a great actor. The camera took off at least a decade off of him in those films. RIP Cliff.

Personally it is my favorite in the trilogy. I always watched it when I was little kid. The first Spider-Man movie that I ever saw. Thank you Oliver for doing this review. I really love this movie.

I remember reading an article on this movie before it came on in the old Disney Adventure magazine. I had no intention to see it but as I read the article I could tell it would be a big mess. It said it would have 3 villains and it just seemed like too much for me. I guess I wasn't alone in that thought.

I think Spider man 3 is one of the most underrated superhero movies of all time

Personally for me, I always enjoyed the design of the venom costume in the film because I've always thought of venom as a dark reflection of spiderman so I like that they put a distorted web pattern on him in this movie. Other than that, I don't think that Topher grace was a good choice for him and he did look kinda skinny

That Black suit theme is glorious and I love Sandman's awakening and the mansion fight scene. The film is still a mess. If we cut out the goofiness from the characters. I think I would appreciate it more. One thing I do love is the look of Venom in his tendril look.

the fact that topher grace said casting him as venom was a bad idea really makes you hate him as eddie a lot less

I think Spiderman 3 is underrated. I've heard all the complaints that there were too many villians, but I don't think that's a problem at all. If anything, it strengthens the movie and gives it a truly epic feel. Spiderman will have to go up against not one but two villians and it does make you fear for him. It also forces Harry to bury the hatchet and help Peter, when he finds out the truth from his beloved Berhard, whatever his name is, the butler. It also makes the film very dark. As for the scene where MJ dances with harry, I think that's a lovely scene and quite sexy. It could even be a homage to what MJ is supposed to be in the comics, she loves to dance, she's not an actress. Honestly, Oliver, I love that bit!

1. John Jameson never brought back the symbiote in the comics. Spider-Man acquired the symbiote on an alien world and brought it back with him. In the comics John Jameson brought a sapphire like stone back with him from the moon and it turned him into the Man Wolf. Both these elements were combined for the 90s animated series. 2. The fact that this movie A, names Uncle Ben's killer and B, then changes who killed Uncle Ben was the worst. Uncle Ben's killer has forever been known as just "The Burglar" Even when he returned and died of a heart attack in ASM #200, his name was never revealed. 3. I actually liked Topher Grace's Eddie Brock. I never really liked the Eddie Brock character in the comics and thought a better character to become Venom would have been Daily Bugle photographer Lance Bannon. Bannon had years of history in the Spider-Man comics (where as Eddie Brock debuted in the first full Venom issue ASM #300) and was already an anti-Peter Parker type character. In fact Topher Grace's Eddie Brock is far more like Lance Bannon.

Spider-Man 3 was a swing and a miss but it had heart, it actually feels like it has a soul unlike some of the stale corporate products that come out now

I love this movie, it has some issues in continuity and some story decisions, but it is better than most people consider it to be.

I really do like this film. It is better then The Amazing Spiderman 1 and 2. And even though it's not like spiderman 2002 and spiderman 2004, it's something new because I wouldn't want it to feel the same really, although I kind of wished they saved Eddie Brock as Venom for a Spiderman 4 or even a Venom spinoff but without Topher Grace even I thought he did a good job of what he had to work with, I would rather have Tom Hardy, Vin Diesel, John Cena, or even the Rock as this version of Venom. but there was something about this I kind of wished that for the ending they had Spiderman have the Black Suit and made him sad and stressed and maybe even depressed from the deaths of Harry, MJ, and Aunt May, and with Gwen trying to cheer him up and stuff. Thats how they could have included Gwen Stacy into the film

Solid review Oliver! Despite its problems its still a very entertaining film. Could it have been better? Yes. Could it have been worse? Hell yeah! It could've been an Amazing Spider-Man 2 for all I care. To paraphrase Sandman; It's not a bad movie, it just got bad luck.

Peter does not fail to recognize that M.J. is having her own problems. His attempts to help her just fall hopelessly flat as she doesn't really want any advice, she just wants a shoulder to dry on. Peter has gotten so used to helping people solve their problems that he doesn't realize that sometimes [people just want a sympathetic ear and not helpful suggestions. M.J. doesn't really help as she is far too defensive when he tries to help and just makes everything worse.

I’ve always loved this movie when I was a kid and I still do today. I still love all three films equally. Tobey was my Spider-Man and is still my favorite. I still own that web blaster.

After watching ASM 1-2 only liking Gwen and peter's relationship together and the spider boy, iron man, iron spider whatever that was. I am growing to like Spiderman 3. Its on TV monthly and was on Netflix for awhile so i found myself watching it a lot more. I always said if a fan could do some editing and take out the cringe parts i bet this could be a fun movie. Topher Grace was popular at the time on that 70's show so im sure they picked him as another name to draw people to the movie. Too bad we didn't get the 4th movie it will always be a what could have been.

Christopher Young's A Nightmare on Elm Street Part II Freddy's Revenge(1985) music was recycled in the 1990 action film Angel Force.

I mean the first two Raimi Spider-Man films are way better but this movie isn’t as bad as everyone says. It’s pretty good imo. It’s super nostalgic to me as well. I wasn’t able to watch until it came out on dvd in late 2007 because I was too young (I most likely got the dvd for my birthday that year). I did get a ton of figures/merch though and most of it I still have. It still holds a place in my heart. I’ll never forget when I saw the teaser for the film for the first time.

Also, M.J. failing to warn those bouncers off from attempting to manhandle a pissed off Peter was pretty lame of her. Not that they probably would have listened. Of course, she never expected Peter to act like that, so, guess she was just too shocked .

Loving the 70's live action theme! They need to release both seasons tunes.

Spider-man 3 undeniably has it's problems, but I'd still watch it over any of the Amazing Spider-man or MCU Spider-man flicks.

The thing that always pissed me off about this movie is the fact that they used “Foreman” (Topher Grace) who is scrawny as hell and could’ve easily played the part of Peter Parker himself to play Eddie Brock (Venom) who has always been a huge football player looking guy that was such a horrible decision.

Pause at 18:12 that look right there....incorporated so much about what could have been. I feel so much wasted potential with this version of venom. That look alone is scarier than anything I've seen with venom on any screen recently. All be his appearance short in its runtime.. Its clear sam put in a decent effort with this venom despite having it being stuffed in at the encouragement of avi Arad.

Gwen Stacey and her pop in SM-3 (2007), TASM (2012), and TASM-2 (2014) - none of them are anywhere good as the 2002 and 2004 films, IMHO. Quite a coincidence indeed.

Such a major disappointment in my movie going history. I can remember feeling embarrassed watching this one. Our group of friends was laughing at the movie, not with it. Such a shame, we were all excited to see Venom...until they cast that dude from the 70s show.

The Editor's cut of the film is a substantial improvement. It's not perfect, but it's a good film.

Peters "badboy" scene is the one and only time thus far in life that I've considered leaving a cinema showing.

Regardless of its flaws, damn does it have a lot of heart. While the newer Spidermans might be objectively better than Raimi's 3, I don't remember anything from them lol

Genuinely liked the sandman arc, plenty of pathos and sweetness with his kid. i wish they had stuck with that instead of cramming a million plots in.

It’s a shame Spider-Man 3 didn’t get that same reception it did with the previous instalments. Personally I think the third entry wasn’t too bad.

Wow I had no idea about that alternate harry scene, that is so much better and way less dumb than the butler waiting for Harry to get half his face blown off to tell him peter was innocent

If the dance scene with Harry and MJ, the emo street dance with Peter, and the nightclub dance, were all cut, the movie would have been better. It's still average, but there are a lot of good moments and scenes

Excellent as always Oliver. This was, unfortunately, the first of the live-action "Spider-Man" movies I've seen on the big screen, and at the time, I thought it was awesome, even though they did short-change "Venom" and the Black Suit. But then again I haven't read the "Black Suit Saga", so I have little knowledge of that source material. However the one change I didn't like was making "Sandman" a sentimental character. I always saw Sandman as a more ruthless foe for Spider-Man, making him a sympathetic character really felt off. Also making Uncle Ben's real killer kinda undoes the whole "With great power, comes great responsibility" theme. While this movie has its themes, I do kinda wish it could've been handled better. I have heard of the "Editor's Cut" of this movie, while it may have not much different like you said, it does seem to have scenes that work better than the old cut, like Harry looking at a photo of him, Peter, and M.J. as apposed to the Butler revealing everything to justify his sudden face turn, and seeing more scenes with Sandman and his daughter. I may give that cut a look someday.

It's a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. I remember the original plan was Sony wanted 3&4 back to back with Vin Diesel as Brock & Christan bale as carnage. But Raimi wanted classic villains and wanted sandman & Vulture

I remember coming out of the cinema after this and feeling so disappointed. The cartoon I watched as a kid did a better job of handling Venom and Peter's darker edge - the dance scene was embarrassing and a lot of it made me cringe. Even by Spider- man movie standards, III has so many ridiculous coincidences driving the plot that I could never take it seriously. Sandman had killed Uncle Ben? Venom falls to earth and happens to climb on Peter’s bike - out of eight million New Yorkers? And on and on....It’s astonishingly lazy writing and after all of that from the first two films, this one just can’t pull it off. It’s just statistically absurd.

Did you ever see Spider-Man 3 Editor's Cut? It adds a few deleted scenes, changes the structure of the movie a bit and makes a bigger emphasis on the symbiote feeling like a drug to Peter. Edit: 😆😆😆You talked about it in the beginning of the video. I like the Editors Cut a lot more than the original.

My problem with Spider-Man 3 was the fact that they had three villains in one movie there didn't need to be three and on top of that the story was very all over the place because the three characters they put in this movie had something going on and it was very hard to keep track of everything I did not like how Venom was used in this movie it felt like he was a throwaway character if I was to rewrite this movie I would just cut it down to two characters Venom/eddie brock and harry Osborne/new Goblin make them the main villains of the movie and save Sandman for a 5th movie and just have Mysterio be the next villain in the 4th.

This movie was alright. But when Venom showed up... eh. I wish they went one of two ways. One, make Harry Venom. Two, go for a more Ultimate style story. By the latter I mean make Peter and Eddie long lost friends, torn apart by the Symbiote. They did it better in Spectacular.
