Spider-Man 3 is a 2007 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It was directed by Sam Raimi from a screenplay by Raimi, his older brother Ivan and Alvin Sargent. It is the final installment in Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, and the sequel to Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man 2 (2004). The film stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker / Spider-Man, alongside Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Rosemary Harris, and J. K. Simmons. The film also marks the final film appearance of Cliff Robertson before his retirement and death in 2011. Set a year after the events of Spider-Man 2, the film follows Peter Parker as he prepares for his future with Mary Jane Watson, while facing three new villains: Uncle Ben's true killer, Flint Marko, who becomes Sandman after a freak accident; Harry Osborn, his best friend, who is now aware of Peter's identity and seeks to avenge his father; and Eddie Brock, a rival photographer who subsequently transforms into Venom. Peter also faces his greatest challenge when he bonds with an extraterrestrial symbiote that increases his abilities but amplifies his anger and other negative traits.
Development of Spider-Man 3 began immediately after the successful release of Spider-Man 2 for a 2007 release. During preproduction, Raimi originally wanted two villains, Harry Osborn and Sandman. At the demand of producer Avi Arad, he added Venom to the list, and the producers also requested the addition of Gwen Stacy. Principal photography for the film began in January 2006 and took place in Los Angeles and Cleveland before moving to New York City from May until July 2006. Additional pick-up shots were made after August and the film wrapped in October 2006. During post-production, Sony Pictures Imageworks created over 900 visual effects shots. With an estimated production budget of $258-350 million, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time of its release.
Spider-Man 3 premiered on April 16, 2007, in Tokyo, and was released in the United States in both conventional and IMAX theaters on May 4, 2007. The film grossed $895 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the trilogy, the third-highest-grossing film of 2007 and was the highest-grossing Spider-Man film until it was surpassed by Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019. Unlike the previous installments, Spider-Man 3 received mixed reviews from critics.
A fourth installment, titled Spider-Man 4, was set to be released on May 6, 2011, followed by a Venom spin-off film, along with a fifth and sixth installment, titled Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6 respectively, but all were canceled. The Spider-Man film series was rebooted twice; first with The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield; and later a new film series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, beginning with Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) explored the concept of the multiverse to connect the previous films and characters to the MCU with Maguire and Church reprising their roles in the film.

I really like this film’s depiction of The Black Suit and The Symbiote. It’s like a being that only exists to corrupt people and bring out the worst in them. It’s like Aunt May says. It’s a poison.

"Revenge is like a poison. It can take us over. Before you know it, it can turn us into something ugly". It is still to this day a very memorable quote from this film given Peter's actions in this film once he used the Black Suit whilst not knowing how dangerous wearing the Symbiote could be.

the symbiote is only dangerous by how you make it dangerous... that's not really the symbiotes fault when it's supposed to amplify the characteristics of its host or anything inside the host which can include repressed negative thoughts... so all in all, it just speaks at how fcked up humanity is compared to an Alien who's supposed to bond with the host...

New goblin forcing MJ to break up with Peter actually makes sense. Remember what Goblin's words were to Norman in regards to taking down SM in SM1. "The heart Norman, first we attack his heart." Peter loves MJ and losing her causes loss of focus.

Really solid video. I've always loved Spider-man 3, since I saw it as a kid. I love so much in the film: - Harry & Peter fighting until finally Harry comes to save Peter, ultimately sacrificing his life for good - Every scene with Flint Marco, especially when Peter forgives him, which was exactly what Peter needed to do after all the bad he had done - Eddie just being the worst, his arrogance, his delusion that he's dating Gwen, his doctoring of photos - Peter under the influence of the symbiote heightening his worst traits, and the moment he finally sees it's too much is when he sees how much it's hurting MJ. It takes guts for the film to have Peter smacking MJ, and I'm glad they did it, that's how you makes the stakes of Peter's morality high. - Eddie + symbiote resulting in the ultimate example of how Peter would have turned out if he continued on his dark path - The moment when Mr Dikovitch is shouted at, and his response is knowing that something's up with Peter, because that's not the real him is fantastic. Ursula definitely deserved an apology from Peter though, the way he treated her was pretty awful (she's way too good for him for anyone who ships them). - All the memeable moments of course, 'I'm gonna put some dirt in your eye' lives in my head rent free and of course the street walk is perfection Everyone likes to rag on too many villains, but honestly for the big climax this film was, it makes a lot of sense. I think it would actually be quite hard to take any of them out. Without Harry we miss Mary Jane turning to him when Peter doesn't look after her, and it makes the set up pointless. Without Sandman we don't have the target of Peter's aggression that he needs to let go of. Without Venom/Eddie, we miss the darkness of Peter and all that power that he would use against Sandman. The only aspects I think I would actively want to change is maybe the bridge scene with Peter and Mary Jane, it does feel like MJ could've told Peter what was going on secretly, maybe if her life was a little more threatened, idk maybe Harry has put an explosive on her, ready to detonate if MJ says the wrong thing? The other is the way Bernard never told Harry about his father's death. I think it could've been done like this: Harry is haunted more by visions of his father, like with the end of Spider-man 2, but over the film Peter's words of truth finally get through to Harry. Maybe his final vision/nightmare of his father shows how evil his father was, until he sees glider holes in his father's chest, and that's when he decides to trust Peter's words and goes to save him? Maybe it's a bit too much though, what with everything else going on.

Wonderful analysis, as per usual! Another scene from the extended cut I feel worth mentioning is the montage of Peter fully indulging in the black suit, and he takes it off at the end of the day, which makes him really look like an addict who is reeling from withdrawal. (Although it does *further raise the question as to why it suddenly became a struggle for him to rip it off at the church, las though it was no longer a suit…Is that symbolic of how tightly he’s been bound to it by this point? Does the symbiote realize Peter’s intentions to get rid of it, and this is trying harder to keep itself attached to him?) As for the people who try to bring up how Raimi himself hates the movie, I don’t put much stock in that either. (I was once at a point in my life before I conceived the idea of “death of the author”.) Because bringing in creators’ opinions just for the sake of justifying one’s hatred towards said creation, isn’t so much fighting for their artistic integrity, as it is using them as a tool to parade their own worldview. Learn to think for yourself and form your own opinions, and respect those who have differing opinions. There have been numerous cases throughout history of artists (be they writers, actors, or whatever) who didn’t like the result of something they had a hand in bringing to life, but the public fell in love with them regardless. Creators are people like you and me, and as such, even their opinions are prone to changing.
@godzillazfriction

the way i look at the scene is Peter projecting himself to the symbiote and trying to get rid of it... to be reborn as why he's in a church and after he takes it off, he's completely naked

I love this video, but I disagree on a few quick points: 1. The CGI and visuals are pretty strong for a 2007 movie, which is more than I can say about murky and poorly rendered visuals in today’s Marvel/DC films with rushed production. 2. Tobey Maguire was and still *_IS_* Spider-Man! I know for a fact that if RDJr was replaced by another actor in the role of Iron Man, you best believe there’d be a shit ton of backlash. Same thing goes to Chris Evans as Captain America, Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool, Henry Cavill’s Superman, or J.K Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson. I kinda dig Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man more than the one from the MCU, but Tobey Maguire will always be my #1 Spider-Man. He just really stands out like a sore thumb. I’d honestly rather have corny and cheesy films like the Raimi Spidey trilogy than boring, cliche and formulaic like the MCU. That’s for damn sure Anyways bro, I love your content!

I find it kind of sad now that we have a "better" story in the form of the MCU means that many people now look back on this era of superhero movies especially this trilogy with a bit of sourness. Outside of Rami's Spider-Man story I've also watched the 2000s Fantastic Four movies and Aang Lee's Hulk and even though those movies aren't as bright as what came after I really think these older movies deserve a bit more merit with the individual stories they wanted to tell. It ultimately began with 1998's Blade and came to an end with 2007's Spider-Man 3. An era of superhero movies that I think can also hold up if all along they were all meant to be in their separate universes. Secret Wars is going to suck...

great video! i certainly have a few more problems with this film, particularly how it kinda writes out harry and sandman temporarily to keep the film from feeling packed but ends up making the film even MORE packed; but on my last 2 viewings i find i've grown to love it just as much as the other 2, and you've outlined why i feel that way pretty well. and yeah, the editor's cut is much better even with how small the changes are. i'm glad that this movie is starting to have a pretty positive reputation despite the flaws because i think the character drama is just as compelling as the first 2 movies.

Random fact there was gonna be a Venom movie after Spider Man 3 I'm guessing some alternate timeline of sorts maybe if Eddie/Venom were alive. It would of likely been the same as the Venom movie we did end up getting. Of course it didn't, but if it did happen that would of been a way for Venom to have that chance of becoming a anti hero. But yeah overall despite everything I love this movie for what it is.

I know the black suit was a drug metaphor in the animated series and possibly the comics. However, I like the way Spider-Man 3 handles it where instead it’s a metaphor for Peter’s vengeance and unforgiveness. The thing that really saves this movie for me is Peter’s arc. It’s so unique within the superhero genre. I didn’t know that the symbiote affecting Peter’s personality originated from The Animated Series. Thanks for that but of info.

the symbiote doesn't really change you as its supposed to amplify the characteristics of its host or amplify to what's already inside the host... its thw whole point of why the symbiote bonds with the host... As much as the MCU fans don’t like this movie because of the whole “simp for MJ” plot, dorky Peter and too much villains, I think Raimi portrayed it very well because it’s a more down to earth and relatable character that goes through life problems like us humans go through and it shows all character’s development and humanity within. The more I grew up the more I understood the moral of the story about revenge and forgiveness. For a 2007 movie the cgi actually holds up pretty good and the soundtrack score will forever be goated. Tobey is my favorite Spiderman and Andrew is my favorite Peter Parker and hopefully we get to see them come back in Madame Web or Avenger’s Secret Wars.

I feel like there are things in this movie that I think some people get wrong or don't fully grasp like, I'm sorry to call these people out but Channel Awesome, when they reviewed this movie as well as talking about it in their podcasts and then going to do their own "fanscriptions" for how they wanted Spider-Man 3 and 4 to play out. A lot of the opinions and criticisms I didn't agree with and I felt like at times they didn't know what know what they really wanted or only payed attention to specific things to the expense of not acknowledging the trilogy and Rami's craft as a whole. Sure Venom was mandated by the higher ups at Sony and so was WB mandating Robin to be in Batman Forever. Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher I think did a good job at doing two villains working together in one movie. Whereas Sam Rami I think he *excelled* at doing *three* villains in one movie. Each of which focus on a different aspect that plagued Peter in his life. His relations to Harry, the killer to Uncle Ben and Eddie Brock being the opposite of Peter. When watching the full trilogy everything came full circle at the threequel. We see Spider-Man finally confront and face the things that have been bothering him the whole time. Yes some of it came to heartbreak like loosing Harry, but Channel Awesome wanting to also kill off Mary Jane? I don't see that honestly happening if you put everything into context. I love the movie we got. Especially the creative choices like the suits of Green Goblin and Black suit spider-man. I like those costumes too and for the people who say otherwise are just being closed-minded comic book addicts. Spider-Man 3 *IS* a classic in my book

The game brought really nothing to the table. It was just another spiderman 2 but...kind of worse. I hated the silly umbrella wielding gang.

Back then, i chose to buy Ultimate Spider-Man instead and...BOY, i wasn't disappointed! I bought it on BOTH PS2 AND GBA! It was awesome to play as Venom who had always been my favourite Spidey villain! Eventually, i bought Spider-Man 3 as well for GBA and PSP and i liked it but... it's replay value was really low!

Ill be the one to say i enjoyed the reference to the guilder trailer gag from the bloopers, also bernard was the equivalent to the rat that freed antman in avengers endgame
