I understand the gripes about how this film tries it's best not to be like the Rami films but I didn't mind it. I feel like Feige wants to take time to actually develop Spidey through all the crossovers and solo films which is gonna be the ultimate payoff. My only issue is that he kinda feels nerfed compared to how he was in Civil War. But I guess the Russo's are just that good at characterization because I have the same issue with T'Challa in the Black Panther movie as well.

yh we got a responsible Peter in Civil War who even though was a rookie could still fight, move like a Spider, was light on his feet and had Spider-sense. Homecoming felt more like a prequel but they had to put the video of the airport battle at the beginning to say it comes after Civil War.

I like that Aunt May discovered Peter's identity this early so that plot points don't get recycled. But did it have to happen because Peter was a careless dumb fuck and in a comedy scene?

I was the only one of my friends who didn't love Homecoming and it took me a 2nd viewing to find out why. I came to the same conclusion as you guys. Homecoming simply didn't try. It was content with being a funny summer comedy with Spider-Man in it but it never took steps to become anything more than that. The film skips over the drama and the consequences from being Spider-Man as everybody gladly shrugs off Peter's mistakes and instantly forgives him for everything. Also like you mentioned, the Aunt May scene was just used for a cheap laugh at the end. The action I also found to be very forgettable. Even the soundtrack which was once one of the most instantly recognizable things about Spider-Man movies is now just background noise. Homecoming simply did not try and that is why it is one of the more disappointing Marvel movies in my opinion.

What prevents me from being completely happy with Homecoming is Spidey's motivation. Not to protect people and demonstrate responsibility but to join the Avengers. That made it hard to like him most of the time and I was shocked when he talked about dropping out of high school. It's as if Uncle Ben's death meant nothing.

I have a deep hatred for this movie and it really bothers me how these “fans” claim this is the perfect Spider-Man movie. Spider-Man isn’t just a quippy teenage superhero. He’s a breathing human being grounded in reality. This movie focuses on none of that and just rather go for the entertainment value instead of what the character is actually about. I go back to this video to maintain my sanity.

I really hate the fighting in this movie. Spiderman never throws a punch at anything . There is no fighting. It's just spiderman trys to dodge stuff than got his ass kicked for failing to dodge .

And when he swings he eats shit all the time. They actually made Spider-Man lame. It's almost like the people who made Homecoming forgot that Spider-Man kicked so much ass in Civil war. He took down Giant-Man, yet in this movie he's so damn clumsy.

@tornadochaser2457
@tornadochaser2457 6 лет назад
x jh He's clumsy and doesn't throw any punches because he's just starting out as a superhero. He's a kid, in over his head, and reaching for things bigger than what he should, he wants to be in the Avengers but he can't adequately protect the streets when he's "close to the ground". He's got super strength and has to be careful not to hurt anyone because he's getting equipped with his powers, he's been trying to hone his spider sense better too, as shown in Civil War. While I understand why he's always stressed, as he's constantly handling too much, the constant clumsiness makes less sense considering how efficient he was in Civil War. As he becomes a pro when he fights "close the the ground", he'll move on to swinging high up on skyscrapers, and be able to tackle big supervillains without much hassle. He won't be afraid of heights, handle his spider sense and strength with ease, and will be better able to juggle his double life. Since both previous series featured the traditional origin story for the character, this movie acts as an origin story of sorts - It shows how Peter grasps coping with his responsibilities as Spider-Man realistically and maturely. The culmination of that is when he rejects Tony's offer to join the Avengers and get an upgraded suit.

My initial viewing of the movie was enjoyable but definitely doesn't measure up to Spider-man 2, so probably my 2nd favourite in the franchise. But with each consecutive viewing I started to dislike it more and more and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why the movie got more 2 dimensional everytime, until this video... Cheers Sam, this was a brilliant explanation, your arguments are quite well founded and you've got all the right points to back them up (unlike ALOT of the disagreement comments here)

I agree with everything said in this video. While I don't hate this movie, it felt shallow and underwhelming. It's a shame how much this movie misunderstood the character, and that's what irks me the most. What makes Peter Parker such an interesting character is that he doesn't really WANT to be Spider-Man, he would much rather live a life for himself like most other people but his sense of guilt and responsibility keeps him from permanently looking the other way and continues his fight for peace even at the cost of disappointing those closest to him. This movie just throws all of that out of the window and makes Peter a naive child striving to be the next Tony Stark and the generic "don't treat me like a kid" shtick. I try not to let it get to me, but as a huge Spider-Man fan, it's so hard to overlook. They should have focused the movie around Peter's personal life and how his life as Spider-Man effects his relationships and opportunities. It could have been so much more endearing, and they could still pull some comedy out of that, while also not completely neglecting the drama of it as well. I also really hate how they ignored his origin entirely. Not that I want an entire hour dedicated to retelling his origin, but a few flashbacks and ACKNOWLEDGING Uncle Ben's existence could have done wonders for Peter's character. This movie acts like it never happens, so where is this character at? What is he fighting for? Is he using his great powers for great responsibility as a result of ignoring a situation he could have easily remedied, or is he just there for the thrills and to "prove" himself to Tony Stark and not his deceased uncle? Because the latter just doesn't make sense if we're to assume his origin is the same as the original Sam Raimi film. And it seems pretty contradictory to how the character was handled in Civil War where you can clearly see signs of remorse and that SOMETHING happened without ever going into full detail of what. I also agree so much with your point about the characters being caricatures. They just felt like backdrops for Peter to react to instead of feeling like actual people. While I have my issues with the past two franchises based on Spider-Man, Sam Raimi is the only one to comprehend what makes Spider-Man work, and that's putting Peter Parker first and foremost. The suit and his powers should be secondary. Part of me understands why they went the direction they did - I get it, they had to play it safe. But they could've done it so much better, while also staying true to the character, and it's really disappointing. I know we all really want to like this movie, because if this tanked, that would have been it for Spider-Man for a while. I just hope that the next movie gives us more substance. It doesn't have to be on Spider-Man 2's level, but something that shows what makes Spider-Man one of the all-time great superheroes and not just any cute ol kid around the block.
@tornadochaser2457

With regards to your comment about Peter wanting to be Spider-Man, I think it's worth noting that this iteration is depicting Peter in high school, where he was nothing more than a bullied, loner outcast, spending his time exploring science. His life was far from great and he was ecstatic when he first got his powers, gleefully developing web fluid and excitedly preparing to fight in a wrestling arena. He blossomed in college, making friends with people such as Gwen, Harry and Mary Jane. Being so young, it makes sense that he still retains his initial excitement, and even then, the weight of handling a double life clearly takes its toll on him as he's constantly over-stressed, and longs to join his classmates relaxing in a swimming pool, but can't due to his superhero responsibilities.

Tornado Chaser dude, what in that paragraph describing Peter Parker and his character places him in a different spot from all the other young Peters that did in fact grow to have love/hate relationship with Spidey?
@bashbro1able
@bashbro1able 6 лет назад
That's not how it worked in the comics, though. Gonna go into geeky fanboy mode for a sec, but in the first issue of the Amazing Spider-Man, when he was in high school, he tried to join the Fantastic Four but only to help pay bills to help out his ailing aunt after her husband recently past away, not because "whooaaaa being Spider-Man is totally awesome!" I'm not saying Peter can't enjoy anything about being Spider-Man at all, but him neglecting school and dicking around in his costume just for funsies seemed like a bit of a stretch (and extremely out of character). It's always been established that Peter is someone who would much rather live a life for himself, but will still do what's right for the greater good even at the cost of his own personal dreams or desires. Not because he wants to do, but because he has to. That's what separates him from the norm and makes him a character worth following. This Peter just feels like any other kid on the street, and not Peter Parker. And if you're thinking in terms of how the average teenager would behave, then sure, this movie nailed it. But he's NOT supposed to be just your typical kid, and I feel like this movie didn't give him enough credit. It's really disappointing. I would agree with you more if this were an origin movie, but that's the thing. Since they completely ignore his origin, it makes certain scenes and actions feel out of place. I never got a sense that this Peter learned that with great power comes great responsibility because he's too busy being a thrill-seeker and looking for Tony Stark brownie points until the very end, nor does he seem like someone who lost their uncle semi-recently and mourning over that loss. I just don't understand why he needed a whole movie to teach him the EXACT same thing his origin was supposed to teach him in the first place, except with Tony Stark as the substitute Uncle Ben. Just think if this were the sequel to an origin movie. Wouldn't this film feel a bit redundant? All I'm saying. EDIT: And also, just for the record, I don't have a problem with them doing their own thing for this iteration or anything, but once you start ignoring core elements of the character, then I have more of an issue. It's still possible to take core elements and spin them in fresh new ways that doesn't mess up the original concept.
@tornadochaser2457
@tornadochaser2457 6 лет назад
bashbro1able (Strike Phoenix too) Very well-constructed case dude! I think Peter Parker has always stood out as a relatable character, which is what makes him so popular. It's easy to imagine we are him because he deals with mundane responsibilities and social drama, so it's easy to forget the differences apart from his genius-level intellect. However, I think this movie serves as an origin story of sorts for the character. In Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter has defined himself as the classic Spider-Man halfway through each movie. This Spider-Man series is taking its time with Peter's story, Peter has remained in high school, and he's just become a superhero and is still getting to terms with what it means to be it. I believe this is the reason the supporting characters feel like caricatures, as due to the series taking its time, characters have been set-up for character development later rather than given it here. They're still well-defined and have quirks which make them stand out, serving as a nice garnish to the story. This movie acts like a TV pilot, similar to the first X-Men movie, it's laying the groundwork for future development while still telling a story. It treats itself like a chapter from a comic book annual rather than a complete one. I think Marvel has been aiming to keep things as fresh as possible recently - Making Thor: Ragnarok a kind of self-aware parody, and Guardians 2 much more of a family therapy movie than an action one, ensuring their series doesn't get stale. Spider-Man is going for a more episodic approach. As a result of taking things slow with Peter's journey, this movie is serving as an origin to him becoming the classic Spider-Man. He's scared of heights and is learning how to cope with being in very high areas, he's learning how to properly hone his super strength, apologising to criminals for moving them too hard, trying not to crash into things as he sometimes swings too forcefully, and not punching anyone. He's learning how to properly hone his spider sense too, as shown in Civil War. The initial excitement of getting his powers is still with him, while still maintaining his sense of responsibility - He wants to fight with the Avengers, he wants a chance to stop the big bads. However, he still has a lot to learn, in this film, he knows with great power comes great responsibility, that's why he's not using his powers for personal gain, but he's still grasping with how to deal with this responsibility maturely and realistically. At the end, Peter rejects Tony's offer to join the Avengers and get a new suit, taking a big leap from being a kid who wants to mess around with his powers to a true hero. He knows he's not ready to join the Avengers, even though he would love too, shown by the look his face makes before he gives his final answer to Tony. The right thing to do is to "stay on the ground" because that's what he's capable of doing at the moment, he greatly struggled with the Vulture, and has been over-stressed and clumsy as Spider-Man throughout the entire movie. He has a lot to learn and refuses to be a liability for the sake of his own fun, making the responsible decision with regards to the people he's sworn to serve and protect.

I think the reaction Aunt May gives is a good and valid one. Spider-Man isn't this huge deal yet, he's a smaller figure. So her not being amazed by his heroism and just shocked that her nephew is a crime fighter is warranted imo. The whole conflict is Peter choosing his responsibilities as Spider-Man over his wants as Peter, classic Spider-Man conflict. Vulture wasn't really a bad guy, just a criminal, he wasn't endangering the entire city, but because Peter is so attached to his morals he has to stop the bad guy. I feel it shows the moral fiber of Peter to ditch all he ever wanted, a date with Liz, to stop the Vulture. The consequence of this choice is that he doesn't get to date Liz, he's still a loser. He's down on his luck yet again because he did the right thing. The spectacle isn't there because he's new at this, he doesn't have a full grasp on his powers. It's a smaller movie, it's meant to be, that's why there is no city destroying plot or anything. It's a personal story exploring the moral strength of Peter Parker by him choosing doing the right thing over what he would like to do. Would you really expect Tony to treat Peter like anything other than a kid? Tony is the father figure for this movie. He teaches him to respect his suit, why he wears it, and who he wears it for. "If you're nothing without this suit, than you shouldn't have it" "I wanted you to be better (than himself)" these both show explicitly the relationship they have. Tony see's himself in Peter, and wants to help Peter not turn out like him. Perhaps because they both lost their father figures or that they are both kid geniuses, whatever it is there is a definitely a connection there. Honestly I always saw Pepper not being there a simply Gwenith Paltrow not wanting to do it, never bothered me that she was in this one. Adults work out problems, Tony only ever said they were taking a break. I don't think you should crap out with the web slinging on the first outing. Let the action build up as the character gets a better grasp on his power. It's more natural that way. Putting you're friendship in jeopardy because you're friend didn't want to possibly reveal his secret identity and put his family and friends in danger is hardly logical. I feel the ferris Bueller criticism is an incredibly over played nit pick. It's not that big a deal. Okay fair enough, we really didn't get to know the other characters that well, and while I don't really care, I see where you are coming from. I tried to substantiate my points best I could without like rewatching the movie lol. Hope I did more than most in this response.

Sure, Peter doesn’t get to date Liz even though he’s barely heartbroken over it and Liz is quickly replaced by Michelle right afterwards. The biggest problem with this movie is that almost everything feels too easy for Peter. There are no major consequences for any of Peter’s mistakes since they’re quickly fixed right afterwards.

While the movie wasn't perfect, I think it depicted Spider-Man and Peter perfectly. Holland was teriffic. And the scene when he is trapped under the rubble (the issue 33 moment) is one of the best Spider-Man movie moments ever. You really see how he's just a kid and is scared like any other 15 year old would be, but he knows he has this incredible strength and pushes and pushes and his sheer willpower allows him to free himself. Well done analysis, Sam! The film itself was fine, but it left so much to be desired! I never want to bite the hand that feeds me because I desperately wanted a radically different Spiderman film myself, which is ultimately what I got. However, as you've pointed out nothing that's different in this interpretation feels in service of the film's identity and rather feels in service of simply being different. I love that Marvel Studios has more recently been hiring younger independent filmmakers to put their own stamp on the individual films, but Jon Watts is a director who would seem to have a much less distinct voice and style in comparison to say a Ryan Coogler, a James Gunn, a Jon Favreau, etc. But even if the film suffered from studio interference, nothing about the film's aesthetic in terms of the clothing for each character, the cinematography or even the film's setting would seem to indicate anything in the way of a singular vision. Compare this film to say Iron Man 2, which arguably had much worse studio interference and is probably an objectively worse film, Jon Favreau's directorial style and identity still feels heavily present in almost every scene, the way he opens the film with Iron Man's entrance choreographed brilliantly to AC/DC as well as how he makes every scene flow very naturally, the way that he establishes a wonderfully oozing chemistry between his actors that makes the scenes of exposition really entertaining to watch, etc. Iron Man 2, despite horrible flaws, is still quite an entertaining film to watch simply for those wonderful Favreauisms that we love and adore so much. Iron Man 2 even had great action set-pieces. Watts is practically just a second unit guy in comparison to Favreau. Perhaps the element that I enjoyed most about Homecoming was its cast. Despite the characters feeling very underwritten, the cast all had a good chemistry with one another that slightly elevated their characters above what the script allowed for them. I've got to be honest and I know I'm probably in the minority here but I don't like Holland at all in this role. His sarcasm comes across as more annoying than funny, it grates on the nerves. As far as I'm concerned the best Spider-Men (Christopher Daniel Barnes and Josh Keaton) are in the animated world.

I can't agree more about the character interactions point you made. I recently read the first 200 issues of TASM and I am still reading and sometimes the villian of the week action starts to bore me as I wait for the next panel where all the characters are interacting with each other. (Btw the cast kinda sucked through issues 200-230 or something but thankfully at least betty brent is back so it should get better any issue now. :D)

I don't know. Maybe its because I have graduated and now have to deal with real life. But just this whole High School dynamic and setting killed any and all interest I have in the MCU Spider-Man. I understand that was a major draw of his character in the original comics. But he also grew out of those stories fairly quickly and became an adult and seeing that transition is what drew me into the character. And While I'm sure something similar to that is going to happen with these movies, I don't have the patience or interest to see it through. Also after playing a role in defeating a galaxy conquering genocidal alien warlord, what personal problem could one teenager have that will amount to anything greater then a hill of beans?

There's no way on earth that this movie is better than Spider-Man 2. I personally think it's not even better than Spider-Man - which, to me, felt more coherent, and felt more like an actual movie, instead of mishmash of pop culture references and cynical jokes. This movie felt very incoherent in the way it tells its story and treats its character. I really wish if the movie was just one coherent narrative with one big theme as the focus. But it was very muddily written. Personally, I hoped it will be like an anti-bullying, anti-school-establishment movie. I'm not pretending to be some kind of a screenwriter, but, fuck me, after I saw the movie, I already built, what I think, a much better story than the one movie provided me with. I thought, since this movie implies that Ned and Peter are the bottom of the barrel in school and they want to become part of school's high hierarchy, why wasn't that the main theme of the movie? You know, them trying to gain respect from popular kids like Flash, but failing at that, so that Peter then uses his ties with Spider-Man to gain respect from them, and, over the time, he gets distanced from Ned, because cool kids tell him to not hang out with him because he is a looser. But then Peter realizes, "What the hell?... All these people are phonies. They're not my friends. I have a friend. And he's better than all of them. " You know, you respect your friends for who they are to YOU, not who they are to the public. But nope, nobody thought of that. Instead, we have some bullshit story about Peter wining science competition, and Ned, so-called best friend of Peter, being a bigger douche than Flash Thompson. This movie let me down.

Anton Affleck I won't dispute that, but don't you think you could do something more with a low class teenager with a ridiculous sense of responsibility, super powers, and a suit worth thousands? Like with most, age seems to be a bit too big a fixation, even at the cost of staying true to the character being adapted. Peter's not defined by his youth, you know.

Couldn't have said it better myself. This movie is beyond overrated. Ignore the continuity. Easily the worst MCU film for me.

What would've been more interesting though would be if Peter actually found out about the Sakovia Accords. Like, maybe at the end Tony could try to get Peter to sign the accords and reveal his identity since technically Peter is stopping crime without govt approval. Peter could find out that Tony lied to him and tricked him to joining his side. He could find out that half of the Avengers were locked up and have now escaped. Any of these would've been more impactful than just simply brushing it away as if nothing happened.

i know this is month's late but the accords only applied to the Avengers, who as a group are pretty much unstoppable and routinely took matters into their own hands ignoring any boundaries they were crossing. Spider-Man is a small time Vigilante who mainly operates just inside New York, there is a huge difference, and Spider-Man was not an Avenger, that was the whole point of homecoming. a teacher was even talking about the accords in a quick shot so obviously peter already knew about it, but again only matters to the Avengers, which Peter was not.

Something I haven't seen anyone talk about. In the scene with Peter under the rubble, he definitely shouts "Eddie!" when he's screaming for help. This makes me think that they were planning to do a storyline with Eddie as Peter's sort of brother after the death of their parents. Wouldn't that be a great Venom story with this version of Peter? Tom Holland's portrayal is a younger, more naive and vulnerable character and, if Eddie is an older brother figure who he instinctively views as his protector then him becoming a villain could be really dangerous. That's what I want the sequel to be but Sony's definitely shit Venom film has ruined any chance of this happening.

I agree and disagree at the same time. 1. He needs to be grounded and joyful of his powers. He is a kid in highschool. Everyone would give their left nut to be spiderman. And also he is a kid, so he wont go swinging from high buildings all the time. He was scarred shittless when he flew on the plane, and as some1 pointed out, that wasnt a fight, Peter was hanging for his dear life (coz he didnt have parachute) and Vulture is the one who was going for a kill. I really want his swinging to be earned. To see him go higher and faster. Its a skill he needs to learn. 2. I agree most supporting characters are bland. Aunt May never felt like an actual character, just a nuisance to him. Like if he had a puddle in front of his door so he had to go trough window to get in. She never felt indearing or lovable or w/e. I like school friends but they could have used more development yes. But the thing is, spiderman is in MCU now....Raimi`s spiderman didnt have MCU so they had to build a strong surrounding cast. Homecoming just brings in Tony without explanation and it workds. It works oh so well. He is the Unlcle Ben of this story, Aunt May of the story. Peter looks up to him. And i guess thats the thing now about MCU.....you either make it its own movie (like black panther) or you use chararcters from MCU and shove other characters aside. So, i dont mind MCU approach. Granted, they can do supporting cast better, a lot. But biggest mistake in spiderman movies is this. Peter NEEDS to know his villains before they become villains or before he fights them. Thats why Raimi movies work. He was friends with all villains (except in 3rd movie, which is the worst, and they ruined Amazing spiderman where he had no relations outside with Lizzard) and that makes his fights more ingaging. Will he save Octavius? Will he murder Norman? WIll Harry forgive him? Vulture should have been introduced sooner as a dad of liz...sure it would take away the twist, but i think the end fight would be better.

I really like the movie, I was getting tired of the angst-ridden tone of the previous series', and the light tone of this one made it feel refreshing, as well as fun. This movie is aiming to be breezy and inconsequential, acting like an entertaining pilot to a TV series similar to the first X-Men film. Like X-Men, it sets up all the characters for bigger things. Michelle is a loner and acts like she doesn't mind, but she wants friends really and is shown to be making an effort to reach out at the end. Flash bullies Peter because he effortlessly does better than him academically (with regards to Sam's comment about Flash idolising Spider-Man, there's no reason to think this interpretation feels that way, perhaps he will in the future due to some events). Ned is actually a very realistic best friend for high school, in that he's not a very good one. He's frequently shown to be more concerned with exploiting Peter's abilities and persona as Spider-Man for popularity, than helping Peter in a substantial way. These are teenagers, they're all self-obsessed to some degree and finding a truly great friend is hard to come by. I'm guessing he'll learn to be more dependable, loyal and responsible in time. These things are only touched upon and are actually quite subtle, being set-up for future movies. X-Men acted like a pilot as it was held back by budget constraints, due to Fox having little faith in comic book properties, Homecoming is doing this purposefully. Unlike the other solo heroes, Spider-Man won't be a trilogy because he's Sony's property, so making this movie act like a chapter of a comic book annual, as opposed to a complete one makes sense. I think when the series is down the road, this film will look much better to you guys in retrospect. I think the movie is another showing of Marvel attempting to diversify their superhero films, to ensure things don't get stale. Guardians 2 went for a family therapy tone, focusing on that far more than being an action film, Thor: Ragnarok went for a kind of self-aware parody tone, and Spider-Man goes for an episodic feel. Even though Wonder Woman is a good movie, it feels like a "been there, done that" type of film because it's plot is very conventional now that so many conventional superhero movies have been made. It's unfair to the DCEU really, as they're just getting started and are attempting to lay the groundwork for their cinematic universe like Marvel and the X-Men ones did, but it feels repetitive. Marvel and Fox are trying to expand into other tones to diversify, in order to keep viewers invested, and I think it's been successful overall. I agree with Tony's development in Civil War being negated with him appearing happy with Pepper at the end, though I think the Russo Brothers will make the consequences of everything Tony's been through be front and centre, and palpable in Infinity War. They're the kind of filmmakers who pay attention to every little detail, and will be very concerned with the culmination of the MCU making sense and having weight. Tony and Pepper's apparent reconciliation was done to fit into the film's light tone, cementing the happy, feel-good ending. While it was well done, I really don't like that they did it at the expense of the MCU's continuity.

I don’t see the problem with focusing more on comedy for Homecoming. We’ve had multiple films that focused on the moody/hardship of Spider-Man that people forget that there’s a lot of comics that are just fun and/or comedic adventures. One of the things that bothers me about Spider-Man is the over reliance on the drama. Writers often write stories that add in typical manufactured drama because they feel like they’re supposed to do that in a Spider-Man book. They focus on the lows and forget that Peter is supposed to have highs as well. Peter has to be a sad sack about everything and can’t have anything going his way because that’s what Spider-Man stories are about. However, they forget that gets old after a while if he is never allowed to grow past his problems and is never shown to enjoy his life. It’s fine having a more fun or comedic story every now and then where the aim is to kick back and relax. Homecoming does have its shares of flaws in that it does miss opportunities to show the emotional consequences of his actions, and the supporting characters needed more characterization. Adding in more emotional heft could have aided some areas, but it never ruined the whole experience for me. It’s not perfect, but it’s overall good. I’d say that Raimi was the best director for Spider-Man, but I’d argue that Homecoming, while its goals aren’t as high as Spider-Man 2, is the best Spider-Man film because I think it achieves its goals better than the other films. Spider-Man 2 is the best directed Spider-Man film though. Spectacular Spider-Man is the best adaptation for me, and Civil War was the best live action Spider-Man representation. As far as I’m concerned, my Spider-Man quota has been more than filled.

1) Where in the movies did you see time for Peter making quips? Peter jokes less because that breaks the tension a scene is setting, and breaking tension generally means breaking immersion. The idea we're supposed to get is that if Peter Parker did any more or less, people would die. And rather than serious, I'd say his character is sincere. Sure, the situations that Peter finds himself in turn that sincerity into sobriety, but that doesn't mean he isn't goofy. You can see it all through the movies, if you look back on it. One of the first things he does once he gets powers is design himself a superhero costume. Who knows how many hours he spent doodling? Then there's his first swing, his corny excuses, his interactions with MJ or his Aunt May. His comic book collection (still kept in good condition years after the initial purchase) in SM2, his poetry, his conversations and so on. Do I need to explain how he's goofy in SM3? 2) Peter's attitude is rather true to the comics as well, especially the original run. Peter made maybe one quip at the beginning, one more if he really felt brazen, and then shut up and focused on his dangerous line of work. 3) Peter's humor in HC comes largely from him being an awkward teenager rather than a witty comedian who makes jokes to boast or fake bravado. Perhaps there's more of this (to the point it oversaturates anything else the movie was trying to do, and to no avail at that), but the point remains. Besides, more isn't always better.
