Sam provides his 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice' movie review. Will Warner Brothers finally kick off their intended DC Cinematic Universe? Will the Man of Steel win against the Dark Knight or will they become friends in time for Justice League in 2017? How does Ezra Miller shape up as the Flash or Jason Momoa as Aquaman? How much iconography does Snyder have to pull from 'The Dark Knight Returns' and 'The Death of Superman' for fans to believe they're doing the source material justice? This is a critical analysis of the original theatrical version, not the Ultimate Cut that was just recently released. Should MARVEL and the Avengers be afraid? Starring Henry Cavil, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Jessie Eisenberg, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Lawrence Fishburne and Diane Lane. Directed by Zack Snyder, unfortunately.
Those that often watch other movie-themed channels such as Jeremy Jahns, Nostalgia Critic, Chris Stuckmann, Grace Randolph, What The Flick, Schmoes Know, IGN, Mark Kermode, Screen Junkies, Clevver Movies, Flick Pick, Your Movie Sucks (YMS), Mr Sunday Movies, Oliver Harper and Bob Chipman (Moviebob) should enjoy as well.

The part where Wonder Woman sat watching the clips of the heroes just felt lazy. I'll get called out for comparing but can you imagine if instead of Marvel introducing every hero in their own story, developing them and giving them personalities, Tony Stark just sat at his laptop and watched a five second clip of Thor running around or The Hulk wrecking a building and that was their introduction before teaming up? It would feel so forced and rushed, much like the Justice League.

It reminded me of Stan Lee saying the reason he and Kirby had Loki in Avengers #1 for Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and the Wasp to fight against because it's boring to send letters to these heroes asking them to join a club.

What's interesting is, in The Avengers, when Coulson first comes to Stark Tower, the tablet thing that he gives Tony actually does include archival footage of Cap, Thor and Hulk. But the difference is, unlike BvS, they cut away to the next scene because we as the audience already know what he's about to find out because they've taken time to establish the characters separately. I think it's completely okay for the characters in the movie to get information in a mundane, boring way like that. But, for the sake of telling an interesting and exciting superhero story, taking the time to set up the characters in their individual movies is more efficient.

If "Captain America Civil War" was the cinematic equivalent of "All-Star Superman" in that it is expertly put together & incredibly entertaining. Then "Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice" is the cinematic equivalent of "All-Star Batman & Robin" in that it is nonsensically structured & moronic. I was worried about BvS but I am shocked at just how bad of a movie it really was. I might check out the Ultimate Edition, but it would take someone to REMAKE the movie in it's entirety to make it GOOD. Bruce Timm's "World's Finest" episodes is still the go-to Batman/Superman event.

This film depressed me immensely. There was so much potential. They should've concentrated more on Batman's and Superman's psyche and character development, leave out the cinematic universe expansion to the end credits would've been better.

While I do not think there is anything inherently wrong with having the Death of Superman take place early on (so it marks the beginning of him becomes the true hero that inspires people like the Justice League, rather than the end of his journey as it did in the comics), I agree that the conflict between Doomsday and the DC Trinity could have been removed from the film and saved for later. The conflict with Doomsday is struggling to compete with the Batman/Superman rivalry and Superman/Lex Luthor conflict for development and screen time, in a similar manner as the 3 separate villains in Raimi's Spider-Man 3. In their flawed attempts to link that conflict with the other two, Doomsday's origin was cheapened, since he is now a mindless plot device pulled out of Lex Luthor's magician hat like a Deus Ex Machina, rather than an actual character. And Lex Luthor himself also loses me as a villain when he creates Doomsday, since it contradicts part of his previously established character, when he tries to defeat Superman by building an alien that is even more powerful and unpredictable, without even a way to reasonably believe he could control the monster. And then since Wonder Woman has to be present to help them fight Doomsday, she needs scenes establishing her presence, while we are still in need of development for Batman and Superman. I think they should have just had Lex Luthor's Plan B to kill/tarnish Superman be to create a different villain that makes more sense (like Metallo), for Batman and Superman to fight, and/or set another scheme in motion, forcing Superman into a dilemma where he seemingly cannot save everyone and might end up having to sacrifice himself. When Superman nearly dies saving everyone, but barely survives, that can be how Superman shows humanity he is a hero making a good difference in the world and inspire Batman to go back to his old ways. I even made my own plot summary, drafting how I would propose they do that, if I was involved in this movie's writing.

I saw this thing in a theater packed with comic book fans of all ages. Almost from the first sequence, the restlessness of much of the audience was palpable. Audiences where I live tend to be pretty polite, so no one shouted at the screen or booed, as happened elsewhere. But the screening was filled with nervous laughter at places that were obviously not intended to be funny and groans at frequent intervals. By the time Wonder Woman read her email (!!!) about 1/3 of the audience had given up and left the theater. At the "Martha moment" fully half the remaining viewers variously groaned or burst out laughing or got up and walked out. Those of us who stuck it out until the awful end were not happy campers. I heard a lot of people muttering as they walked out about how angry they were at the writer, director, and studio, and many said they'd never go to a D.C. Superhero movie again. And these were comic fans, the base audience for WB to succeed. I later saw it again, under protest, with a regular audience which had pretty much the same reaction although with more incredulity and more early angry walkouts. So this movie seems to satisfy absolutely no one. Seriously what were they thinking? Great review by the way.

Michael Morrison I have a feeling you're massively over exaggerating. I seen it in a packed theatre too and no one got up and walked or had none of the reactions you spoke about. There is no way that so many people to compare across two theatres could have such drastically different reactions.

Danny Malzahn Really? To me its all the build up that happen in the past movies especially the avenger. Also if Marvel only cares about Iron, then why do they make movies of the unknowns like ant man, Guardian of the galaxy and all the future movie projects don't even have him with the exceptions of Spider man teaming up with him. Also I have seen the uncut and while it does explain thing, in my opinion it is still boring to me.

Danny Malzahn *If they really did care about GotG they would have their roles be more prominent to the main story.* Ya its not the sequel will ever come and continue where the last one left off and the fact that they announce that they will play a huge role in Infinity wars. I don't get it either. Captain America: Civil War did what Batman v Superman did but did it better. I don't know what it is, but I think the Russo Brothers snuck into WB, stole the BVS footage, watched the movie and did everything that BVS did wrong and did it right in Civil War. And the Ultimate Edition really doesn't improve the film, its still stupid.

One of the movie's many (but more obvious) problems was that they threw in: A new Batman who has to be introduced and fully fleshed out Jimmy Olsen Lex Luthor Wonder Woman Cameos of Justice League members Doomsday Darkseid Parademons Steppenwolf Death of Superman KGBeast Flashpoint Paradox Injustice alternate reality THEY BURNED THROUGH LIKE 6 MOVIES WORTH OF MATERIAL!!

You said the one thing that resonates with me the most...they just don't get these characters. Especially after Zack Snyder has been on record saying that people in costumes talking is stupid. You won't ever get any kind of deep, insightful or even contrasting dialogue from the characters. The perfect example is when Batman and Superman are going to fight. Superman could have easily said something to let Batman know that Lex is behind everything and that he doesn't want to fight him...but you need up getting a fight that was seriously underwhelming and ending with Superman saying, "Martha." Also, as you said, the movie could have done so much more with establishing their contrasting views. Show Metropolis as a bright city that is full of hope and show Gotham as a downtrodden city. They don't want to do that because using color or any positive words like 'hope' will be too much like Marvel, according to the fanboys. Again, what is Superman's issue with Batman? What does he philosophical disagree with Batman about? It can't be his killing because Superman does the same thing? This is again where this movie should have had another Man of Steel and a Batman movie before this. The first 2hrs of the movie is dialogue, which didnt have to happen if you have movies that established these characters better so we could see where they stand. I was over this movie when Superman said Martha and Batman's anger and hatred towards Superman just went away. So now all of Batman's villains can simply say Martha and they are good. It was such a contrived way to end the fight...and seriously, in a fight you will not call your mom by her first name...that's how you know it was contrived. Ugh...I am literally surprised this review is disliked into hell because the DC fanboys attack anyone who dislikes this movie. There will probably be a Reddit thread in DC_cinematic discussing this not too soon for now. Anyways, I appreciate your review...I remember on Facebook when you said that this movie broke you and I can understand why. It's really like DC just wants to make everything dark and gritty just for the hell of it. You have Superman who is the symbol of hope and Batman who can be the symbol of fear (not negatively but just as someone who injects fear into people) and you could have contrasted that visually and philosophically and it could have been a movie that made you think and made you understand both sides when they are believing what they do is right. But no...this is why I always believed that DC had no plans from the outset of MoS. Seriously, they showed MoS on television the other day and Metropolis was frickin' leveled and BvS showed none of the cleanup, none of the rebuilding. It could have touched upon it to give more context...but anyways...I am rambling, which happens when I talk about this movie. This movie was delayed a full year and this is still what they put out. I think this movie should get the harsh reviews it got because how do you make a movie that has 2 of most iconic superheroes and this is what you put out? You said that The Avengers had the characters bounce off of each other. That scene in the Hellicarrier will always be my favorite. You see all of their personalities clash with each other so you get to see the characters and you see that they all have issues with each other...great character development. I still don't know what that Superman stands for. Ugh. My thumbs are hurting so let me stop typing. Great review.
@AnthonyMcNeil
@AnthonyMcNeil 8 лет назад
wonder fag That's why reviews are subjective but he was factual right when he said that the people writing and directing this movie don't like the character(s). Snyder has been on record for saying that superheroes in costumes talking is stupid and that Superman is too powerful to be taken seriously. If you watch Catwoman you can see that they tried to make Catwoman's powers come from an Egyptian cat...sorry, but where did that come from? The movie was bad.
@AnthonyMcNeil
@AnthonyMcNeil 8 лет назад
wonder fag Again, if you like BvS that it totally fine but it is far from brilliant. There were no contrasting views between Batman and Superman. Why was Superman fighting Batman? Mainly because Lex was manipulating him...so again, Superman never had a personal reasons as to why he wanted to fight Batman. In reality, *all* comic book characters are insanely overpowered but it's the job of the writers to make them relatable. Superman is supposed to represent what we cannot achieve. Someone who always does the right thing. Zack Snyder and the writers had the perfect opportunity to give Superman depth when he encountered Batman for Superman to simply say that he wasn't going to fight him. The fight would have shown the true character of Superman if he would have let Batman go all out on him and for Superman to not retaliate. Again, Sam is studying the film from a different perspective. The crazy cuts, no establishing shots, the overuse of CGI in the ending fight at night which is hard to keep track of. How Batman can have all of that rage and anger towards Superman and it can go away with the name, 'Martha'. Yeah...the movie is far from brilliant from a film perspective. Again, if you think that it is brilliant the you are entitled to you opinion and I can't tell you to feel otherwise, but with as much hype as this movie had and with the year delay, this movie was a huge disappointment.

Danny Malzahn *Objectively* means based on facts. Again, when you are talking about media (music, movies or anything that is considered art) it is tough to discuss something. You think that BvS is great and I don't, so who is 'right' and who is 'wrong'. If you want to speak objectively about BvS then it is simply not a great movie. I can sit up here and tell you the reasons why I did not like the movie and that is me simply stating my reasons in regard to a medium that is subjective. If you study film and have a background in film, BvS is far from a great movie. Oh and not liking a movie doesn't make anyone a hater. It's simply means that I didn't like what you liked. Seriously you people take someone not liking something you liked like it's a person attack on you or something. If you disagree, fine...there is nothing wrong with people disagreeing. In my comment, I did explain what my problems were and why I did not like the movie. So again, if you disagree, that's fine but it would be completely different if I simply said, "BvS sucked..." like many other people do. Criticism isn't a negative because at the end of the day no movie is perfect but yet people like you call anyone a hater if they didnt like a movie. That's pretty sad.

Being a DC comics fan, as well as a normal moviegoer myself, I honestly wanted to like this movie, but I'm sorry, it just didn't do it for me. _Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice_ was ultimately nothing but a cluttered mess of a movie, with mediocre characters, piss-poor development, unfocused motivations, unrelated plot points, pretentious pandering, and so many more things this movie did wrong that I'd be typing a long-ass comment to simply list all of them. I don't mind the cast choices for the most part however. Henry Cavill can still be a good Superman, and Ben Affleck _could_ work as a Batman that kills (though I'm not a fan of that version of Bruce Wayne), they just needed a more defined and well-developed script that understood the characters of Clark and Bruce and gave them more to work with, rather than just have them walk around and lack distinctive personalities and have them go head-to-head just because of a simple misunderstanding. What I hate most about movies like these is that the director thinks simply because everything is dull, lifeless, dreary, and depressing, that it makes for a dark, mature, and gritty experience, therefore making the films intelligent and complex... Those film directors couldn't be anymore wrong in this regard. Just because you place your characters in a colorless world and make them say self-indulgent, philosophically pretentious dialogue, doesn't mean you're being deep or intelligent, it just means you have an inflated self-important ego, and you don't know what you're doing with the material in your possession. DC comics has plenty of properties that were dark and grim, yet they still had interesting and compelling stories and perfectly-fleshed out characters with distinctive motives (examples: _Batman: Mask of the Phantasm_, _The Dark Knight_, and _Batman: Under The Red Hood_) And of course, there's the obvious pandering to DC fanboys by adding in moments from famous story lines of yesteryear simply because they happened in the comics, such as Batman fighting Superman (The Dark Knight Returns) and Superman fighting and being "killed" by Doomsday (Death of Superman). You can argue all you want that that's what fans want to see on the big screen, but WHY they wanted to see it was completely absent and nonexistent. What also doesn't help this is the issue of Superman's character in this movie being so unrealized and muddled up, that it was made virtually impossible for me to feel attached to him when he fought against the popular grey-skinned goliath. And knowing Henry Cavill's potential for the character, this is utterly made even worse, which is so aggravating to me. Overall, I was severely disappointed with this movie. It was a film that had lots of potential, but in the end, it amounted to a product that was nothing but boring dialogue, dull characters, pandering fan-service, uninteresting ideas, and lifeless atmosphere. Of course it's not the worst superhero movie out there, nor is it the worst I've seen, but it's most definitely not among the best either, not by a long shot.
@LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor
@LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor 8 лет назад
Danny Malzahn No, the movie was definitely muddled in every possible way, and a lot of things made no sense at all. Superman's character in this movie was dull and uninteresting, Jesse Eisenberg did a mediocre job as Lex Luthor, and the majority of the "real world issues" were handled in the most pretentious manner I've ever seen.

Danny Malzahn *_"There's so much wrong here I can't even describe it."_* Oh, is there, really? Well then please, oh wise and powerful Danny Malzahn. Bless me with your supposed in-depth knowledge on how this movie was such a cinematic masterpiece. *_"They have very different characters. Superman is idealistic, optimistic, kind but stern while Batman is cold and broken."_* Exactly where in the movie was Superman idealistic and optimistic? He barely had any dialogue in the film, and every time I saw him on screen, all he did was brood and look emotionless in the eyes. You clearly have no idea what character you saw in the movie. *_" Their motives were pretty clear and not hypocritical."_* Oh really? Tell me then. What was Superman's actual motives, hmm? Where exactly in the movie were his motives made clear? *_"Batman thought Superman was a threat to humanity while Superman simply disagrees with Batman being judge jury and executioner."_* Yeah, and the way that plot line was told was boring, half-assed, and sluggish. The two characters almost never interact with one another, and the chemistry they share is so minimal that it leaves me not giving a damn about the situation. *_"How about you grow a brain and watch the movie sheep"_* How about you stop acting like a jackass? I clearly did watch the movie, thank you, otherwise, my title comment wouldn't be up there. And I'm not a sheep. I'm criticizing the movie based on what was presented to me as a viewer, and I ended up being disappointed. ***** Do you see what this guy is saying to me?
@LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor
@LeonardBillsMcGoatPryor 7 лет назад
+Danny Malzahn _"*No they weren't. Superman's character wasn't bad and was quite interesting seeing him deal with everyone hating him."*_ Oh, how I wish I could agree with you, but sadly, I don't. Clark didn't do much in this film other than look bland, speak a few lines here and there, and fight a giant grey-skinned monster. I see your argument with how he deals with people hating him, but the way that idea was portrayed wasn't executed very well at all. If Superman is supposed to be idealistic and optimistic as you say, then where was that aspect of his character in the entirety of the film? It was next-to-absent the entire time. *_"For what Eisenberg was he did a damn good job"_* No, no, and no. Jesse Eisenberg was a horrible Lex Luthor. Nothing about him screamed that he was a dangerous threat, rather that he was Riddler if he was a mentally-insane asylum patient. I dare you to prove me wrong. *_"Everything is prentcious to you Snyder haters isn't it?"_* 1. Learn how to spell pretentious, please. You look ignorant. 2. Unless Zack Snyder can prove me wrong with actual worthwhile substance that lasts throughout his entire film, then yes, it's pretentious. *_"You think Sucker Punch is pretencious, you think Watchmen is pretencious, you think MoS is pretencious."_* 1. I never saw Sucker Punch. 2. I actually liked Watchmen, for your information. 3. I didn't like Man of Steel either. So what? You're going to rant on me for that as well? *_"Sorry it isn't stupid action movies like Transformers."_* ROFL!!!! You actually thought I expected this film to be a mindless action flick like Transformers!? LOL! You are hilarious! No, what I wanted was a movie with understandable motivations, well-written characters, a decent plot, etc, and BvS did not give that to me. *_"How was it pretencious?"_* We spend a lot of the movie hearing the characters talk about philosophical stuff that isn't integral to the main plot, or lack thereof. Lessons and subject matter need to relate to the events of a movie, otherwise the narrative is unbalanced and all over the place. *_"How is Superman's character not interesting?"_* He just simply wasn't. He wasn't engaging, he had almost nothing to do in the film, he had very few lines of dialogue (and when he did say something, it ranged from being unimportant to being corny), and all he did was look depressed. That's not an interesting character at all. *_"You aren't explaining anything."_* As if you're doing any better.

Whether Jesse was playing a character named Lex Luthor has nothing to do with why his character sucked. I'm glad you realize he was bad but you're not understanding why Sam dislikes him. Sam doesn't care whether he's meant to be the counterpart to the clever, cunning bald Luthor of the comics, he cares whether the character itself works, which it doesn't.

Anyone who would ask for these basic cinematic elements is immediately dismissed by the DC movie worshipping community as "Idiots who don't understand anything, and need things like establishing shots." To that, I would say merely excluding things that actually help your movie isn't the same thing as making a "masterpiece" as many hail this film as. But alas, Snyder knew that a good chunk of his audience were going to defend this movie no matter what, so by acting as though the film is really profound and deep, he got loads of people to heighten their conclusion that "This is the greatest superhero movie of all time!"

I agree with what you said about batman. He's dumb as fuck in this film and he's not calculating and intelligent like he's supposed to be he's just a brute. Which you could argue is the Frank Millar version but I don't like Frank's batman so maybe that why I didn't like it.

@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 8 лет назад
+TheQuantum09 Yes, Ra's al Ghul would often call him that in the comics and cartoons. +Kieran Holmes The only way I could imagine Batman turning out like he did in the movie would be if the Joker managed to mentally break Batman. The movie confirms that the death of Jason Todd did happen in the DC Cinematic Universe, when they showed Robin's suit, and maybe the Joker finally got him to break his rules. During that scene, Batman was talking of how he is losing faith in humanity and that criminals/corrupt government officials are just weeds that will always grow back, while Alfred gives his speech about fever and rage turning good men cruel. As I said in another comment, it would work great as a storyline if that is why Batman is so paranoid, homicidal, and brutish. There would be a story-based reason why Batman is killing and torturing criminals, similar to how he behaved in "The Dark Knight Returns," especially after snapping the Joker's neck. It would then make sense why he is willing to go up to Superman, a man with power and authority, and attack him first, asking questions later. Then you could have the storyline be about how Superman wanted to be that symbol of hope for the world and succeeds in making Batman turn back to his noble ways. But yet this movie makes no attempt to show that is what's going on with this Batman. Instead of doing something like making a solo movie with Ben Affleck, they take the lazy way out and just show the vandalized Robin suit. Because I understood the "Death in the Family" storyline, I myself was able to get invested in this movie's Batman, but any casual moviegoer would have no clue what his true motivations are. If you need to research sources outside the movies to understand a basic part of the story, that is a sign they are doing it wrong. And I know we just had the Dark Knight trilogy, which would allow audiences to already know who Batman is supposed to be. The problem is that if they want their Batman to not be in his right mind at some point in their story (basically, not acting like the Batman we know he is supposed to be), then they especially need to show why Batman is that way. The manner in which WB wanted to go straight to "Batman vs. Superman" and "The Death of Superman" being compressed in one film, with only "Man of Steel" to set up the story and get us invested in the characters, reminds me of this analogy by Angry Joe that sounds spot on. He humorously compared Warner Bros. handling of this movie franchise to having a spouse that wants to go straight to orgasming, without any romance for foreplay leading up to it.

As you said, there's so much horribleness to dive into that it's nigh impossible to mention it all. But one of the biggest problems the film has is how much WB/DC attempted to cram in. We have a Superman sequel, a Batman reboot, the introduction of Wonder Woman, 3 ominous videos introducing us to the rest of Justice League as well as 4 villains. Yes, 4. Lex Luthor, Doomsday, a hint of Darkseid in the desert dream sequence and a scene featuring Stefanwolf left out of the theatrical cut of the film. WB/DC wanted to do in one film what Marvel did in about 6 films. As for the dark, bleak and depressing universe this film is set in consider that the film starts and ends with a funeral. Exactly what is Snyder trying to convince us of?! That being a hero is ultimately a death sentence?!! To say this film is a dumpster fire is an insult to dumpster fires.

Great review! Agreed with most of your points. I totally understand your stance on Eisenberg as Lex but I just found him really annoying. I'd compare Affleck as Batman to Ewan Mcgregor as Obi wan in the Star Wars prequels. He was given shit to do and the writing was crap, however to his credit, I still bought him as the character and thought he did great. I actually really dug the Batsuit but, I agree, it did look awkward at times. It was perfect in the end battle, though. He had a neck and his physique was more like proper batman rather than bulky miller batman. Probably was wearing the stunt suit. I'm just glad they're moving away from the armor tech style from the Nolan and arkham series and Batman was something out of an urban myth like the boogeyman.

I recently watched the Ultimate Edition/Cut of this movie, and although it helps the overall pacing, narrative, and character motive, I'd be lying if I said, "It fixed the movie completely." The extended cut does flesh out the characters and story more, while also filling out certain plot-holes, but the movie stills suffers a lot by trying to cram too much stuff in it in order to compete and catch up to Marvel. It is disappointing when you realize that the movie could have been so much more if it was given to those who grew and respected the source material like other movie creators. Although many have complained that the movie is not as "fun" "humorous" or "lighthearted" as the Marvel movies (The Avengers in particular), I honestly like that. Granted DC could be more fun with the films, but I appreciate that they are trying to take a mature and more adult approach with these characters,...key word being "trying" haha. Overall I enjoy the Ultimate Edition of Batman vs Superman a lot more than the theatrical cut, but I can still recognize its flaws.

Well worth the wait, thanks for a great review Sam! :) I have a funny relationship with this movie, at first I thought it was incredible, second viewing I thought it was terrible, then my third viewing I thought it's not THAT bad. I'm not sure I would agree with you on Zack Snyder or anyone else making these movies not being fans of the characters or not understanding them, because while Snyder may have said that at one point, there's absolutely no reason why you can't become a fan of these characters through the movie making process, people can change their views on certain characters when they work with them for a certain amount of time. About the Martha scene *sigh* YES it's executed very oddly, but the point to it is that Batman is realising that he was taking his vigilante morals to the absolute extreme, he was about to take a son away from his mother and risk becoming the same criminal that killed his own parents, hence why the scene flashed back to the opening scene to emphasize that point, I wouldn't exactly say they became friends, more like Batman would just help him out in that moment because there were bigger things at stake. I think the movie has a lot of redeeming elements, and for all that it wasn't great I liked that it wasn't the generic type of superhero schlock that we get today it wasn't afraid to be different. I know that Marvel in theory makes technically more competent movies but they're so formulaic that I find it difficult to really care about them at this point. Oh and you wanna talk about things that make no sense, look at Baron Zemo's whole plan in Civil War and try and tell me that it's not a complete leap in logic or that he didn't just read the script of the movie. Anyhow thank you for your thoughts Sam :) I'm sorry that the movie made you depressed, I hope Suicide Squad will give you some hope for this cinematic universe.

While not the same character fans have grown up with (either through past Superman movies or through the Superman/Justice League animated series like I had), he was at least the most lively character. Flawed character actions and weird scenes aside (jolly rancher scene I'm looking at you) Jessie Eisenberg was the only actor who seemed to be invested in his role and he made the movie a little more enjoyable to watch.

I have not actually seen BvsS (though I predicted right off the bat it was going to suck), but oh boy was I amazed by the amount of hate this movie is getting! This might be Sam's best review yet and I don't blame him for waiting a few months to release it (as a reviewer myself, I have my on and off periods as well). If I had one nitpick with the review it would be Sam's criticism of Doomsday being a bland monster with no personality, as having read the original DEATH OF SUPERMAN comic, I know that Doomsday is not supposed to have a personality. He's characterized as a mindless and savage monster capable of infinitely evolving and acting solely on his anmilastic instinct to kill everything in his path. Essentially, the fact that Doomsday technically has no personality was done on purpose in the original comic as he's supposed to lack any sort of humanity or intelligence, therefore making him more monstrous and terrifying. But aside from that, GREAT REVIEW!

The problem with this movie version of Batman is that he is not as intelligent as he is in other material. That is the dumb problem they made. I actually love the movie but I completely agree that Batman was executed poorly, not visually in my opinion but character wise yes. In the comics and animated stuff he is a valuable member of the JL because of his intelligence and control however in this he really is just an angry rich guy. I find it hard to believe this version has 12 master degrees.

Yeah, a depth-deprived, dull-as-fuck, stupid, hypocritical version of the character & an actor who showed neither the emotional range of Christian Bale or the screen presence of Michael Keaton (Excluding animation here, though Conroy is pure badass) is the best thing about the movie... I loathe this awful cinematic universe. As a fan of DC comics and it's characters, I am consistently baffled and shocked at how wrong these movies are, how many people support them, how incoherent they manage to be, pretentious as hell with tons of empty, floaty dialogue, the complete and utter ruining of every goddamn character, cramming in every character into ensemble movies, the depressing-as-fuck tone, and so on and so forth. Reboot this, please, for the love of god. Here's phase one for ya: -Superman movie. -Batman movie. -Wonder Woman movie. -Aquaman movie. -Green Lantern movie (John Stewart). -Flash movie. -Justice League movie (introduce Martian Manhunter). There you go. Then "phase 2" could be sequels to the standalone films, new Justice League members such as Shazam, Green Arrow, Hawkman/Hawkgirl, Doctor Fate etc. Then do a Justice League 2. Then after that they can start doing more abstract things like Suicide Squad, Teen Titans, Booster Gold, Birds of Prey, New Green Lanterns, and more. Another thing they could do to improve on what Marvel fails at is don't make everything connected. I hate that shit. I'm so sick of everything being connected, with other Avengers making cameos in every movie now. Civil War was arguably more of an Iron man movie than a Captain America movie. Have the individual series' be connected, but they only come together in the ensemble movies like Justice League. This franchise could be amazing, but it just sucks ass.
@keenanjones9142
@keenanjones9142 6 лет назад
The fact that you suggested they do a phase of individuals movies like that without throwing out a single idea for stories that could be told and how to make them all cohesively fit together is why the general audience shouldn't be dictating what the studio is doing. That would make no sense.

"If you hated this movie, it means you didn't understand it." I'm not going to see a movie titled "Batman v Superman" to be taught a fucking philosophical lesson, alright ? I'm going there to have FUN. And I'm not speaking specifically about the type of fun the MCU offers : even the Dark Knight trilogy, with all its serious themes, did not get crushed under them and respected its source material, ffs. This movie completely gave up on its superhero identity in order to bring over-ambitious themes ot the table. Know what the last movie to do this before BvS was ? Fant4stic. How did that turn out for that turd, uh ? In a movie which dealt with the long-awaited encounter between the two most iconic superhero of all time, followed by the formation of the *Trinity*, the "dark and gritty" treatment was just a terrible choice. This was meant to be a celebration, not a damn obituary of the superhero genre. (So what, the upcoming King Kong vs Godzilla should deal less with the fights between two mythical monsters, and more with "O, the death of nature !", is that it ? Fuck me.)
@2deepy
@2deepy 8 лет назад
And it's not even just that. I always welcome themes, no matter how socially/politically relevant they are. In some stories, they essentially have no place, but it's certainly welcome in a story about a god revealing himself on Earth. It's just that they shove themes and motifs there for no reason. We're meant to use Superman as an analogy for U.S. interventionism and foreign policy, but it's only brought up so that the filmmakers can say "Hey, we're making a relevant commentary! This is a masterpiece of a superhero movie!" And I say this because this somewhat interesting idea of Superman being a metaphor for American's foreign affairs involvement goes nowhere. The last we see of it is in the Captiol scene, and it leads straight to a pee joke. I don't care if people thought "Granny's peach tea" was funny, it just goes to show that the film brought things up to seem more profound.

In my personal opinion and experience, themes and symbolism are good supplement material for fiction but it shouldn't be the crux of what makes your work engaging/entertaining. What I'm saying is on the surface, you should have a good story and/or good characters that most of your intended audience should understand (but hopefully more than those people) and themes/symbolism/metaphors are under-the-surface material that should be explored only if the audience member wants to dig that deep into the work. Sorry for the long sentences. I just hate the, "It's a masterpiece because metaphor!" argument.

The kind of person who drinks Mountain Dew while eating Doritos and playing any COD game from the past 7 years on Xbox one or 360, powning newbs while wearing a baseball cap and being racist and sexist. You could even see superman and batman in this as the representation of the jocks and Eisenberg's horrendous Luther as the jocks idea of a nerd who likes other superhero films with colour and fun, being portrayed as childish, awkward, annoying, and yet somehow being extremely smart and owning all the best toys. I think the best way to explain why this movie just doesn't work in the slightest is the title fight itself. Any comic book fan knows the reason 'Batman V Superman' is such a great idea is that these two characters have completely opposite ideologies and seeing these two battle is both awesome and kind of thought provoking. And the movie does not get this at all. For all the self important dialogue thrown in, the film never attempts to explore the characters beyond the basic surface level, nor does it ever try to show that these two have opposite beliefs and ideologies in any way. It just thinks throwing the fight in will automatically make it engaging. But when you don't give us a real reason to care about either character, it becomes boring. The title fight, the entire point of making this film, is unengaging, boring, and shoe horned in. How the hell do you mess up a concept as simple as BATMAN VS SUPERMAN?!

I think maybe Batman didn't want to kill Superman anymore because when he saw that Superman's mother was in trouble he could relate to that and felt sympathy. But still, he wouldn't turn on a dime like that. Also, you would think that since they hate each other for being murderers they would do something to prove that wrong or something to earn each others trust, but they don't to that. It's ironic that in their attempts to make superhero movies "dark and gritty" they make it much harder to take them seriously than a superhero movie that can have serious moments but still also know how to have fun, and not be ashamed of itself for being a superhero movie. But really, I blame Chris Nolan for this. They keep trying to emulate his style which was always overrated.
@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 8 лет назад
At least Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy still had moments of humor and levity. Although it brought the Batman characters into our real world, it still tried to have fun with them when it had the chance. I also felt it focused on developing its characters and telling an actual story first, having the philosophical dialogue serve as a bi-product. Personally, I do not blame Christopher Nolan at all, but rather the studio executives failing to understand what worked in his movies and thinking they can match his success just by trying to superficially copy his style, at the expense of what would work in the DCEU.
@SonofTiamat
@SonofTiamat 8 лет назад
Danny Malzahn I think the Marvel movies strike a good balance between fun and serious. These are superhero movies after all, not noir thrillers. Sometimes you need levity, even in serious movies. The feeling I get with movies like Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman is that they're superhero movies that are ashamed of being superhero movies.

Okay, I love your reviews and I am not a DC fanboy at all. In fact, I prefer Marvel. But when it comes to the whole Martha thing, there seems to be one obvious point that everyone keep missing in favor of the obvious. The reason why Batman stopped fighting once he heard Martha was because he realized something important about Superman. He wasn't just an alien, hellbent on destroying the world, but he was a human, with a mother as well. He dehumanized him throughout the fight, seeing him as a force that needed to be stopped, but only in the end did he realize that this wasn't a monster, but someone with a mother as well. The fact that his mother's name was Martha also resonated with him, making him realize that the two were more similar than he thought. The fact that his own mother's name was Martha showed to him that perhaps he was the bad guy here, and he agreed to see Superman in a more human light, and ensure that no more Marthas would die today. I know it's easy to see the scene as, "Batman stopped because of the name!!1", and the film certainly didn't do a great job in demonstrating this, but that's basically what it boiled down to. Not that this makes the film better in any way, and it's failure to get this properly across is certainly another demerit to its name, but it's something that needs to be said.

I understand that as well, hence why I wasn't on the floor laughing but it just comes off really silly the way it's done especially with afflick (God bless him, he tried his best with this piece of shit) screaming "why did you say that name!!"

I agree, the scene was meant to show that Batman has an epiphany as far as seeing Superman in a more human light, and it also reminds him of the pain of killing and losing family. The thing about the argument that "they just become pals" after this is that there is nothing to even indicate that they are "pals" now, they simply understand each other a little bit better now and realize that they have a mutual threat to take down.

Except when he selfishly says, "Why did you say that name?!!!", he clearly wasn't thinking of Superman as a human, he had a brain fart and genuinely thought his mother was maybe still alive or something. Batman's kryptonite ladies and gentlemen

Batman openly acknowledged the possibility that Superman IS mankind's ally, or at least for the moment. In his speech to Alfred, he states that he's concerned that Superman will EVENTUALLY turn on humanity, motivating the bat to kill him. This whole idea that "Batman humanizes Superman in the 'Martha' moment" directly contradicts the speech given earlier, and vice versa. Again, he acknowledges that Superman might be good. So why all of a sudden is he so shocked to learn this up front? You expected this possibility, and now it's just being affirmed. What about that whole "1% chance" thing? He's still a potential threat one day. What's changed? The only answer to that question is that Superman says the name "Martha," conveniently lacking the last name "Kent" so that Batman will receive the notion that he's referring to Martha Wayne. The point being, Batman not killing Superman hinges on the mere coincidence that these two share mothers with the same names. If Superman says "Sara" or "David," Batman would off him. It boils down to just being a convenient plot point to get Batman stalled so Lois could make it there to inform the dark knight that it's actually Superman's mother he's talking about.

I thought Man of Steel was okay when it was dealing with the theme: "Is the world ready for Superman?" Unlike many, I understood what the filmmakers were trying to say with the two father figures taking opposing viewpoints (Jor El and Johnathan Kent), the angel and demon on Superman's shoulders, the christ imagery everybody spends too much time acknowledging, and the anti-christ imagery everybody pretends is not there. The question concerns itself with wondering if we, as humans, are up to the task of improving ourselves and entering into the bright new aeon where we mend the faulty Kryptonian ways and supersede them. Superman felt we were ready to so such. Was he right? Interestingly enough, the action scenes were the ones I found boring. Especially when Superman went around the world to punch a diabolical machine in the Indian Ocean. I felt the movie kind of ground to a halt there, and I just turned off my brain for a little while. "This is the punchy action part for the masses that is required for a film like this to be a tentpole," is what I thought. I felt that when the Kryptonian craft was destroyed and it was just Superman and Zod, they should have stopped the action part of the film right there and got back to the meat and potatoes of the drama. Unfortunately, we got another action scene which ended in Superman killing the last Kryptonian for us. He chose us again. Fine. Unnecessary, but fine. Then I see Batman v Superman and one of people's chief complaints was "not enough Superman and Batman punching each other". Really? First there was *too much* in Man of Steel... then *not enough* in BvS? I gotta admit, I'm as confused by the public reaction as DC execs are. I didn't like BvS because it chose between drama and action in favor of *action*. I liked the *drama*. That's why I think I may be done with this iteration of the DCEU. But I liked Man of Steel and I stand by that assessment.

This is exactly what I think of Sony's current movies(including Venomverse and the scrapped TASM franchise) Most of them are dark and gritty with ugly color palettes. They pander to angsty tweens, think themselves as cool and mature while they're absolutely not.

Great review man. You've encompassed everything I have thought about this movie and even more. And don''t even get me started on the delusional so called "DC fans" who are deliberately pretending that Batman and Superman in this movie are being portrayed accurately from their comic counter parts because we all know that's bullshit. You took the words right out of my mouth. Let's hope Suicide Squad is a turning point for the DCU because at least it looks like the director gives a shit about those characters. And the most funny thing about this is was before this movie was released and people were looking at the trailers. All I saw was "RIP Marvel" and other stupid crap like that. So where are these idiots now? Oh yeah that's right, trying to convince me and others that this movie is somehow good and "deeper that it actually is" or "we're not smart enough to understand this movie". LOL!!

you see this whole movie is irrelevant a true batman would go detective mode and learn about supermans weaknesses so when the day comes and superman does go rogue batman would take care of him i mean in the context of the movie universe where in the two years did superman ever look like he wanted to take over the world seriously i mean i know he's depressing and uninspiring but still this superman is saving people i assume almost everyday so just why seriously but on a lighter note great review i completely agree

Now having played it, if you want a GOOD representation of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman that just so happens to be a sequel to a previous entity and has a *SPOILER* fight involving Batman and Superman at the end, just look at LEGO Batman 3. It even had more emotion put into that fight because the characters actually resemble their comic book counterparts and actually felt like three dimensional characters. It's sad that a game about toys managed to do that but not this.

I may disagree with a lot of your points on this movie Sam , but I still highly respect you as a movie reviewer. I'm not gonna sit here and refute your points, seeing as how most of them are entirely subjective, but there's a few things you seem to misunderstand: -Zack has admitted to being a huge Superman Fan. He loves comic books, and he loves these characters. -While you got Superman's motivations for not liking Batman spot on, you were completely off point for Batman's. It has nothing to do with Batman disapproving of the way Supes does things. After the black zero event, Bruce became blinded with paranoia. He saw way too much power that was completely unchecked and if Supes were to go rouge, nobody would be able to stop him. And due to him being a much older, jaded, and war hardened Bats that were used to, he takes his vendetta to far. That's his arc in the movie: Redeeming his faith in humanity, and becoming the hero he once was.

"I had a buddy who tried getting me into “normal” comic books, but I was all like, “No one is having sex or killing each other. This isn’t really doing it for me.” I was a little broken, that way." -Zack Snyder

That quote doesn't disprove what I've said. 1. He's referring to himself at a much younger age. 2. For all we know he did read darker more twisted superman or batman comics. He didn't specify what kind of comics they were

I'll always defend Man of Steel against you Sam. But I'll admit defeat with Batman V Superman. The politics, Batfleck and his fight scenes were the only good thing about this film IMO. Jesse Eisenberd as Lex, the fight between B & S, the story, the lead up, Doomsday, it was awful. I thought Superman would grow a character other than loving Lois Lane who is completely useless in the film. He's just a mopey beef cake the whole film. I tried making sense of it all like the people who saw the Phantom Menace when it came out in 1999, but I just can't let it go what a miss this movie was. So much wasted potential and shitty decisions, except for Batfleck, he was awesome.

He doesn't know Clark Kent is Superman. Which is weird, because Batman is the world's greatest detective and Lex learnt everyone's secret identity off-screen. I think the problem here is bad writing.

First to comment! Very glad this came out at last since many months now. Great review by the way and I can't wait for you to say upon DC's 3rd movie on Sucide Squad. What do you think on the recent Ultiamte verison where many people say like the Power Rangers Super Megforce Legendary Battle extended verison were they are both superior to the original verison but it still not good as a whole?
