Willam DeFoe is the best part of this. I mean, he is able to have a conversation with himself and make it absolutely clear who is Norman and who is Green Goblin.
It helped that for the scenes when he's just Norman, he has the gap in his front teeth filled by a prosthetic, but as the goblin, he has the gap exposed.
@@kennethv5250 JK Simmons, Laurence Fishburne, Ben Affleck, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, Ryan Reynolds, Christian Bale, Djimon Hounsou, Willem Dafoe, Michael Rooker, Idris Elba, Sylvester Stallone, Russell Crowe, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Keaton are the only ones I can think of at the moment, although I'm sure there are others
@@NovaBridger yes to half of those, no to the other half. And still none of them would have been as good of a JJJ as JK. Bryan Cranston is the other best candidate.
@@NovaBridger Most of those are top tier, fantastic actors; who are nothing like JJJ. I would love to see them play Spider-Man characters, just not that one.
Well, there are some more I think. There's a lot of amazing actors who put their soul into a performance, some even in this very movie. Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn is legit terrifying, even though in this one his suit looks stupid, the man inside that suit is a freakin psycho
I don’t know if you noticed, but when Norman is Green Goblin, he has crooked teeth. When he’s just plain Norman, his teeth are straight. It’s a cool little change.
The ring announcer guy for the wrestling scene was Bruce Campbell, the main guy in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead movie. He made cameos in every Sam Raimi's film, and yes he's in the 2nd and 3rd Sam Raimi's Spiderman movie too.
@@alexhefnerstvmovievault I also heard that Raimi's plan (assuming they would've made a Spider-man 4) was to have Bruce reveal himself as Quentin Beck aka Mysterio
Exactly. He’s a combination of the best versions of Spider-Man: the 60’s-70’s version, the 90’s animated series, and little bits of the Ultimate comics.
The final fight scene is truly brutal in this Because this was the first superhero movie I saw in a movie theatre, I sort of thought fight scenes this violent would be the norm in the avalanche of superhero movies to come, and they really weren’t
What I love about this film is how much the death of Uncle Ben hits the audience after you see how his relationship with Peter is. The acting from Cliff Robertson (RIP) was fantastic and he is hands down the best portrayal of live action Uncle Ben. I also love that Sam Raimi used the 90's Spider-man Animated Series as part of the inspiration as well (especially seeing as how that was and still is the best animated incarnation of Spidey to date)
I loved the old spiderman animated series. I wasn't born until 2000 but back then you still only had so much to watch and I would go through so many older series one by one. The old animated spiderman series was without a doubt one of my favorite adaptations of anything superhero. Honestly nothing touches the old animated superhero series. I know a lot of people may not care or have the same beliefs but I recently found out the old animated x men series had a special moment of wolverine reflecting on his faith in God and the teachings of the bible. It was super powerful and no matter what you believe or think it was a scene that was something in terms of emotion and character that the shows today could never hope to even match. So much emotion and good stuff came from those older shows.
Alex, that "Darkness" you feel in this movie is a Sam Raimi staple. You can always get that sense in every film he makes. That being said, you really need to see the Evil Dead movies starring Bruce Campbell (you know, that Elvis looking Guy that introduced Spiderman at the Wrestling match). You will definitely think those movies are "Groovy."
Fun fact: During that upside down kiss, Tobey couldn't breath with his nose because water was getting in so he sucked air from the corners of his mouth during kissing Another fun fact: That spider bite? Not CGI. Sam Raimi wasn't satisfied with CGI look so they called some biologist with spiders, one of them color redblue and learned him to get from point A to pooint B. And bite itself was close up shot.
Rematching this after Civil War I can't help but think of Peter saying to Tony, "if you have the power to stop the bad things from happening and you don't.... they happen because of you." Ooof that hurts a little more
Spider-Man 2 is my favorite movie of all time and I’m so excited for your reaction to it. This movie is also near perfection, but Spider-Man 2 perfectly encapsulates who Spider-Man is supposed to be. Cant wait!
There are definitely some fun Superhero Easter Eggs in this: -Aunt May telling Peter that he isn’t Superman -The shot of Peter running and unbuttoning his shirt to reveal his Spider-Man suit underneath is a nod to Superman -Jameson flipping through Peter’s photos of Spider-Man and saying “crap, crap, megacrap” is a nod to the scene in Tim Burton’s Batman (Michael Keaton) from 1989 where the Joker (Jack Nicholson) is flipping through Vicky Vale’s photography portfolio.
@@ericjette2435 before you claim things to be fake, have you ever watched a movie with headphones on? When I watched the conjuring I was alone with headphones on full blast. I urge you to try that.
@@alexhefnerstvmovievault Sorry if I offended. I didn't realize it was the sound that startled you, I thought it was the brief image that flashed on the screen. No, I don't usually watch movies with headphones on unless I'm on a plane or something like that. (Why would you have them on full blast? That's on you.) Anyway, I still think it's funny that you're so easily startled, but I find your, uh..."sensitivity" rather adorable.
I love Tom Holland as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, but Tobey's reign will always hold a place in my heart. It's probably some nostalgia, but I think a good part of it is that I had been waiting so long for a Spider-Man movie, and they did such a great job with this one. Tobey will always be Spider-Man to me.
The main guy behind the MCU (Kevin Feige) is one of the executive producers on these 3 Spider-Man movies. So it's very likely to have some MCU vibes while watching these while not quite feeling fully MCU
So glad you finally got to this movie. I've been waiting for you to tackle the trilogy of Rami Spider-Man's. Also can't wait for you to get to the duology of the Andrew Garfield movies.
@@alexhefnerstvmovievault You definitely had a great reaction as always. It's always such a treat your Marvel reactions keep it up. Also your jump scare reaction was top notch hilarious.
@@alexhefnerstvmovievault Hey Alex , I grow up with spiderman , I had the VHS to this film and it was red which was awesome , also on your Music reactions channel , as I don't think you have reacted to it yet.... Please could you react to Bring Me The Horizon - The Sadness will never End ?
Willem Dafoe is an amazing actor. I love how he's able to play such an amazing and creepy villain and make it clear that Norman is not in full control of himself. The way he can differentiate between the Norman Osborn and Green Goblin voices is astonishing and very frightening. also, the lady who said Spider-Man was hot is none other than a woman who's an icon in her own right.... Lucy Lawless, AKA Xena, the Warrior Princess.
22:06 what’s really cool is as he’s swinging away you can hear him hit the side of the building. Love how brutal their fight was instead of it being the superhero wins unharmed. Also noticed at the thanksgiving dinner Peter is wearing green and Norman is wearing red and blue
You can tell homie really got scared the moment the jump scare happened; the screen's light reflected a bit and he reacted instantly lol love that you kept it in 🤣🤠
Every other climactic superhero fight is like little kids throwing water balloons at each other compared to this... this scene actually terrified me as a kid and made me think maybe Spiderman wasn't gonna make it
"Yeah, our classmate was acting real funny today. He appeared to have shot some sort of web out of his hand and dragged a tray by it for like 15 seconds. Then he had a fight with Flash, he did a double backflip like 10 feet in the air and sent him flying across the hallway. Coincidentally, that was the day after that super mutant spider lab visit, and like a few days before a spider-themed hero appeared out of nowhere. No idea what happened to Pete, though"
Remember, the guy who directed the first three Spider-Man movies - Sam Raimi - got his start directing the Evil Dead horror movie trilogy. So be ready for more jump scares, Alex. It's part of his signature style. The ring announcer during the wrestling match is played by Bruce Campbell, star of the Evil Dead trilogy and Sam's longtime friend.
I can't wait for you to get to No Way Home! So glad you're rewatching these films Alex! Love the jumpscares as well 😂 Never scared me since I pretty much breathe through the horror genre but still lol!
"Guy with 8 hands. Sounds hot." "You're interesting." Very interesting. That was Xena, warrior princess. And I want to chime in with everyone that mentioned the jump scare. Hands down best I've ever seen. It's the reason I love you as a reactor. You absolutely immerse yourself in your films. Keep having fun.
Random fun fact! The curly hair dude behind MJ after the flash fight scene, the one you talked about, made out with a supermodel for a go-daddy super bowl commercial.
I’ve always loved Tobey’s trilogy even 3 except for the shitty Venom, but personally now that we’ve had Andrew & Tom do their versions, Tobey was a better Spider-Man than a Peter Parker. Each actor portrays the character differently but they’re all perfect performances. Bro I love the jump scares, it fricken kills me 🤣 You’re a legend for keeping the jump scares in the edited video!!
My parents gifted me Spider-Man for Christmas when I was 5, maybe 6 years old (I'm 27 now), and DVDs had just become popular to buy. Spider-Man was the first superhero I remember being introduced to and to this day, he's my 2nd favorite character after Wolverine, who is my favorite superhero period.
The scene of Norman talking to the Goblin in the mirror is one of my favourite scenes in any movie, I read somewhere that apparently Willem filmed that whole scene as is, in one take
William Dafoe is a god. Dunno if you're much of a game player but theres an older playstation game called "Beyond Two Souls" where he played a part in it. Such a good actor. And his versatility is off the charts.
Seeing you react to all the Spider-Man movies is dope, I remember watching the 2 one as a kid in theatre’s when there was still intermissions😂 Another banger as always💯🤙🏽
I still think Tobey's Spidey was just as good as his Peter. He wasn't as quippy, but he embodied the fun loving and heroic aura that Spidey always had.
Tobey now has the age Willem had when he shot the first Spider-Man, time really flies by. Also, MJ was dressed as Gwen Stacy in the scene when Peter took her a picture for the “school news paper”
2:20 Man I’ve been there, it’s so awkward when someone looks like they’re waving at you, you wave at them and then you realize they were actually waving at someone else
I didn't notice until years later, but when Defoe is Norman he's wearing dentures with straight teeth and when he's the Goblin its his real teeth which are somewhat jagged and gapped. Fun little detail.
So fun fact, the bridge that MJ is on in the final confrontation between Spidey and Gobby is a reference to the George Washington bridge, which is where the Gobmeister kills Gwen in the comics.
Great job Alex! Love the reaction! This is literally the second superhero movies I've ever seen on tv after Hulk (2003). I watched this for the first time in 2006 I guess
This is my favorite Spiderman (actor and movie). Having said that i do love all 3 Spidermen. Their takes on this character are so different and fascinating to watch, but Toby will always be #1 for me, his take to me has heart....plus he's the OG so...🤷♀️...cant wait to continue this Spiderman journey with you!
it’s fun watching your reactions to movies youve seen, but don’t remember all that well. The movie hold up quite well. The second one still holds up even better
Just in case you aren't aware, Spider man is actually far stronger than he lets on. he is constantly pulling his punches by A LOT, in order to not kill the people he fights as we all know he he is too good hearted and never wants to kill people.
I've been really enjoying your energy to reacting to shows and movies. Your very funny and creative in your comments and little gags you do. Keep it up and my suggestion is to watch Wednesday or That 90s show
@@alexhefnerstvmovievault Been following you since you were doing music reactions for awhile and I'm so glad to see your growth and how comfortable you have become on the camera. My favorite video is actually not a reaction but how you took the time to share your opinion of the others reactors like Leo aka Mr Video and it warms my heart.
11:36 $2500 got you a pretty solid used car in 2002. That got you a half-decent car even in 2011 when I bought my first car. I copped a somewhat rugged 240sx for $1200 and took it to my Driver's Ed classes. That little car was insanely fun.
I love this movie so much. I still remember when I got the movie for Christmas that year. The Green Goblin is one of my favorite villains and Willam DeFoe does a great job in this role.
Originally Spider-man's webs didn't came out of his arms. In the comics, and in the ASM and in the MCU he uses a web-shooter. These movies had the idea (that a lot of comicbook movie uses) to change a bit in the original story.
Think about it though: people who don't fight don't punch correctly. Their form is usually terrible and they usually have no clue how to put force behind it.
I bought the Spectacular Spider man a few years back and the Toby Spiderman 1 &2, watched thru the whole Spectacular a few episodes before bed over a month, nice lighthearted fun overall. Then watched the two Toby Spiderman movies since it had also been awhile since I've seen those, and all I could say is that the entire time its just depressing, there is not really a moment where it is not depressing. Still good movies, just very sad
1:58 I had a few bus drivers who would do that... did that. I grew up in a really small village in Germany. Basically there is just a clinic and less than a dozen family homes. My older sister and I were the only kids in the village. The bus stop was actually a bit off the village at a crossing with the road connecting other villages. There were no issues when my sister took the bus to school. But when I came to elementary... So note that although it was a school bus only taking kids from 5 villages to another village, the busses used were regular busses used for other lines during the day or for charter. So for the first two years of elementary my mother walked with me to the bus stop where we had to be unmistakenly visibly waiting right on the edge of the road or otherwise the bus drivers would speed by. Even though it was one of 6 total stops and they had to take me every morning. This also meant that we couldn't dare to use the bus shelter as it was oddly set off the road and not clearly visible from the road; you would have had plenty of time get into view IF the bus drivers were not speeding. As I mentioned the busses were regular line/route busses and so they had buttons to signal the driver to stop; if I did not press the button in time the bus drivers would speed past my stop; if I did they only lectured us kids on not pressing the buttons as "they knew where to stop"... as they sped past my stop; then I had to walk back on the road to the crossing; this went on for all of my elementary school years and usually also happened during my secondary school years with the sole difference that it was a regular line/route I had to take; which still meant that they usually had to make a hard stop from speeding and sometimes still lectured the passengers not to press the buttons in the middle of nowhere
34:00 well... Spiderman did NOT kill Norman; he did kill himself with the glider and Harry doesn't know that Spiderman just didn't stop the glider with his own body; apparently Harry believes that Norman was lying there naked and then Spiderman broke into the Penthouse and stabbed him; the scene in the other movie, where the butler far too late reveals that Norman was stabbed just makes this worth; it also implies that the butler hid the crime from the authorities completely if you think about it, they would have tried to figure out where Norman was killed and what kind of blade the murder weapon was; AND they would have questioned Harry about these things alot since he would be a prime suspect; he better had a solid alibi for the time of the murder and no questionable transactions in his financials so yeah; the movie just asks for a lot to have us ignore that no critical thinking happens inbetween the body drop scene and the burial scene
Spider-Man never got this dark again, until Spider-Man No Way Home. Because Willem Defoe returned. Till this day, Goblin is the best Spider-Man villain because of Willem Defoe.
7:59 I am sorry man but I forgot how many times I re-played that part😂😂 I had literally tears from laughing so hard🤣 Anyway love your reactions man, I first saw your reaction to the Batman and when I saw you reacted to the mcu I binged all you had, keep it up man!!!
For Spider-Man 2 Sony brought comic book artist Alex Ross to make the drawing that appeared at the beginning of the movie. James Cameron was planning to direct an early iteration of Spider-Man, he had the idea of casting Leo DiCaprio as Peter/Spider-Man.
This Spiderman was my childhood, Dafoe and Simmons truly captured their characters and any new actors for their roles will have some large shoes to fill. I loved the New Yorkers fighting Green Goblin. Kind of bittersweet as it was a nod to 9/11 and people looking out for another. Oh and it introduced me to Nickelback, been a fan since then and still have Hero on my playlist.
FYI, I've seen many say Netflix Daredevil season 1 is in 2015, around Age of Ultron, season 2 is during 2016 and season 3 in 2018 but before Infinity War, Matt, Karen and Foggy blipped and Kingpin didn't and rebuild his empire, thus Hawkeye in Christmas 2024 (Also, Kingpin is NOT Dead! He'll return in the Disney Plus series Echo and Daredevil: Born Again)
Fun characterization fact!! Willam has a natural gap between his two front teeth and when the Goblin is in control, the gap is present. When Norman is in control, the gap is not present. Why does Harry instantly assume Spider-Man killed his dad? So a thing that these Spider-Man movies don’t do a SUPER good job of showing, that is more prevalent in the comics, is that a vast majority of New York do NOT like Spider-Man. They think he’s shady for wearing a mask and only doing his heroics mainly at night (he’s a highschool student, he only has free time at night). So it’s entirely possible that Harry already didn’t really like Spider-Man just in general and seeing him next to his dads body was just a solid reason as to why. I am very excited for this recap to No Way Home. That movie was the Marvel movie of the year and I can’t wait for you to see it!!
Thank you for taking this Spiderman Journey, this is almost like the build up to Infinity War/Endgame but only with No Way Home. This is the real stuff and I am so ready for this!!! An observation I would like to enter in for consideration is how the movie narrative says that Spiderman killed both that burglar and the Goblin, when in fact both of them died by their own attempts to kill Spiderman. The burglar pulled a gun on him and even though he broke the guy's wrist of the hand that was holding the gun, it was the shock that made the guy trip over the pipe in the floor (great place for an exposed pipe ((not)) and fall out the window. So when the people looked up, so was the narrative born that Spiderman killed him. The same with Gobby, Spidey's reflex dodged the glider which took the Goblin out of the game and just like when people saw him standing in the window at the death of the burglar, when Harry saw Spiderman standing over his father's body, so then another false narrative was born; which is probably why Jameson loves him so much, because he anything he does, is the gift that keeps on giving.
Am so Excited to revisit Sam Raimi's *Spider-Man Trilogy* with you, specially *Spider-Man 2* which is one of the few Comic Book Live Action movies that i consider a 10/10 🛐
The fact that they had to redo parts of the movie and trailers due to 9/11 is undescribable. There were promotional videos for the movie, including the Twin Towers... The part at the end, the New Yorkers on the bridge, was filmed post 9/11 for a New York Strong representation.
Flash was played by none other than Joe Mangienello himself. Alex don't disrespect Bruce Campbell, who is not only in every one of the first Spider-Man trilogy movies, but is a good friend of the director, and a great actor also. The interesting punk girl is none other than Xena, who was also in a Sam Raimi produced tv show
That "curly hair guy" in the background of the school halls, one of the most prolific background actors in the world, there's a RU-vid documentary about him
Green Goblin/Norman Osborn is pretty high on my villain list. He is Marvel's Joker...and Lex Luthor. (Though Doom is also similar to Lex.) He is chaotic & gets REALLY personal like the Joker, and is rich & smart like Lex.
Y'know what, this movie and it's sequels still stands well to this day. Not too cheesy on the special effects, just enough humor, and a fantastic amount of drama and action. A perfect superhero origin movie.
Lol every time spider man beats green goblin for the first time at the parade is one of the bystanders on the ground calling out when peter swings off with MJ is. “Spider-man Just kidnapped that woman!!”
