Spike60's Jonsered "Top Five" Picks....A Bit Of Jonsered History

Need to be an enthusiast to appreciate this video. Bob is an oracle of Jonsered/Husqvarna History. These video's are as much about capturing that history as anything. The new dealers with first the Husqvarna derived Jonsereds and now with Red/max really don't have a reason to support these older saws at all. So trying to capture as much history as possible and getting it online for those who are interested.....The genisis of the "Spike60 Saw Colleges" is that concept. Hope you enjoy....:)

I was given a 2055 for 2 days while my 2063 was in the shop and it was the nicest softwood saw that I have ever cut with. At that time I was production cutting 10-20 inch white spruce. Outstanding saw for limbing.

I knew a guy that worked for Weyerhaeuser as a solo hired contractor in the late 70's and 80's. He would go into the woods and fell trees for logging crews, that's all he did find the marked trees fall it move onto the next one never de limb or bucked just fell. He would use Jonsreds, that is were I learned about them. He called them Johnny Reds. Husky's are Chevys and Reds are Cadilacs, that what he said.

Great video! When I was a kid, I watched my neighbor cut firewood everyday with his 49sp. 25 years later, I still use my 49sp, love it! Great saw!

I saved a 49sp from being scrapped. Got it for free. And put an Archer 16" bar and chain. Use it almost all the time. And it is my old mule. Works but can be a pain to run in cold and hot weather.

The first really good saw I ever ran was a 49SP in 1977. I had never heard of Jonsered but it quickly became apparent that it was an excellent saw. Now I have too many big Homelites, Poulans, Jonsered, Husqvarna, and a couple of Stihl and Dolmer. Chainsaw collecting and running can become addictive.

Thanks for the interesting video guys. I am kinda new to chainsaws. I now own a Jonsered CS2255, a Husqvarna 350 and a Craftsman 358.350810 (Looks like a Poulan Wild Thing). So far the Jonsered seems to have the most power. The Husky cuts nice too.

I never knew about Jonsered until I moved to northern Wisconsin and heard all the stories of these saws and them being used for production logging up until as recent as 10 years ago and I just don't see much love for them online outside of niche areas and it's a shame because the people that love them seem to really love them

@bcperry: Couldn’t have said it better myself. I too have heard the testimonials of enamored customers from the past. As a kid, my first saw that I used was a Homelite. There was a time in the past when Homelite was a great saw. Those days are gone. The tide and trends of the big box stores and the economy have taken its toll. I never used a Jonsered, but to this day those dedicated customers with strong memories of a product they respected are the same ones that have impressed the history upon me. Obviously there was a time when Jonsered was a great saw beloved by its users. I never got a chance to experience it. Times have changed. Nowadays it’s a two horse race. Stihl & Husky are the market, with Echo following behind in certain products

I have had one Jonsered, the 2139T. An arborist saw. I love it. But it's the only J'red I have ever had. I guess it's not a common model, since I can hardly find any footage on it.

In 1979 I purchased my first Jonsered. I traded in a Homelite, The dealer went through the line up of saws that he had available. He wanted to sell me a Rancher, and I told him I was going to cut 8 to 10 cords of firewood, and I didn't want to do any work, I wanted the saw to do all the work and quickly. I walked out with a 70E and I had that saw for 30 years, then it was getting hard to get parts for. That was a strong running saw, and it made short work of any thing it came up against. Vic New Hampshire.

That 930 looks a lot like my 590. Great little saw. Been thinking about replacing it and stunned to find its lighter than its equivalent cc contemporaries Stihl MS 261 CM and Husqvarna 550 XP MK II (Jonsered no longer available down here in NZ). I expect they'll have way more power but assumed things to have have got lighter over the years. Kudos to Jonsered for building such a light and durable little saw way back then. Would have liked to be able to factor them into the comparison of what to get next.
@livewithnick

The Jonsered 930 looks like what 590? It’s certainly not a little saw. And it’s certainly not lighter than a Stihl 261 or Husqvarna 550. Strange comparison but ok..🤷‍♂️🤔

Looking at your 70e, looks like it may be a 66e. It has a 66e recoil, and top cover. The 2 saws were almost the same, with a couple of suttle differences. The largest difference being the 66e ran a smaller piston, and cylinder, along with the small throat carb. The best way for you to tell is pull the muffler. At a quick glance the 66E will have double piston rings, where the 70e is a single ring. Bore measurement is 50mm for the 70e, and 47mm for the 66e.

The round flocked AF's for the 621/80 were great...a little funky, sure. They filtered fine and I used an 80 as a backup loggin' saw for yrs that way. I used a 90 professionally too and the AF for that and the 801/81 were much more modern, but 'better' than the round flocked round J'reds filter....not really. Now that copper screen filter IS crap....you need to pitch that and buy the round flocked filter with its own special cap. Agree on the 70E...the only downfall to that saw was that high failure SEM'S modules. Husky and Stihl each had their demons as well with those early SEM's that went around the crankshaft and bolted to the case. Ironic that Husky is now selling NEW SEM's modules for the 2100/2101. Too bad they don't make new SEM's modules for the early 70E's.

@buckingsawpalace3029

They were Jonsereds until Elektrolux bought them in the early 80s... for some reason the "s" got lost in that process. Maybe some "Special-Marketing-Operator" suggested that idea for some reason...

Yeah the parts are pretty much unobtainium, filters are non existent (I have a spare for mine thankfully, mines in mint condition and I bought it from a garage sale for $25! goes great and cuts really well, only downside to it is it's weight, she's a heavy bugger but is quite smooth to run (compared to my 029 super which is also a great saw to use for firewood cutting duties. The 621 seems to be a quite a torquey type saw with good power in the cut.

I just bought a new Redmax. I can't think of the model now its the same as the Husqvarna 439 or the rear handle version of the 435T top handle saw. I bought it new from a dealer on Ebay. It came with the oil adjustment screw busted off in the box. The local Husqvarna dealer gave me a hard time about the warranty to the point I just ordered a new oiler for $23 what it would have cost for me to send the saw back to where I got it. Pissed me off the guy was a real asshole. Made all kinds of smartass remarks about that is what you get buying on Ebay and told me all kinds of stuff is going to be wrong with the saw. He just was pissed I didn't pay $400 and buy the saw there I am sure. The closest Redmax dealer I was going to go to that showed on Redmax site when I looked the shop up he closed in March last year. He was a Jonsered dealer and said since they were merging with Redmax he was closing. He is a logger and was open from 4 till 8pm after he got done with his other work. Found a couple other Redmax dealers around should have probably just checked one of them out but they are all a ways away. Not many Husqvarna dealers either with Stihl dealers everywhere. One of the Stihl shops used to also carry Husqvarna but not anymore.

@afleetcommand 2 года назад
Don't have the serial number to years chart handy but I will ask. Prolly wouldn't help you anyway. Use partstree.com for saw diagrams and parts break down. SOME dealers will work with you is u have a part number.. Problem is that ear Jonsereds have been out of production for decades and a VERY few dealers still have parts. SO go back into my video archive and see what we did blending Husqvarna 268/272 parts to those saws. Things like bottom end parts are a direct match, same with ignition parts. Even pistons. BUT the cylinder and carb arrangement is unique to 670's same as the throttle / choke/ pulse setup. And all the plastic is unique as is the handle..
