Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this video, we show you how to install a set of Spiker Engineering Hood Struts onto a 1st Gen Toyota 4runner. This video would also work as a tutorial to install the hood struts on a 1984-1988 Toyota Pickup.
**For the install, we followed these instructions from the Spiker Engineering website:

*PARTS*
*Spiker Engineering Hood Struts

*Stubby 3/8” Flex Head Ratchet - (it use to be available for sale separately but now we can only find it as part of this 4-piece set. These ratchets with a flex head and 120 click points of engagement are a serious game-changer. They work in situations other ratchets fail.)

Awesome how Toyota engineers had foresight to provide extra “holes” to allow future brilliant engineers to improve on their original designs. Have a set on my 3rd Gen and love it
@TimmyTheToolman

Yeah, those extra holes came in super handy. I love my hood struts too. I have them on all my 4runners, (2) 3rd Gens and (1) 1st Gen.

I was going to install this on my 2000 tundra, but my truck came with these from the factory, and I’ve been using them the whole time. 👍👍

Yep, you're one of the lucky ones that already had hood struts. For those that don't, they have Spiker Engineering that can hook them up.

These kits are sick!! I’ve actually installed these on my older vehicles that weren’t Toyotas. If your vehicle has a regular prop rod there’s probably a kit out there to add these to your vehicle be it a Toyota or a ford. It’s like heated seats….if you’ve never had them it’s not a big deal, but once spoiled to them you have to have them. Especially if your back is shot, but I digress. Good stuff brother!!

Yep, these kits are awesome. Simple and very satisfying.

Dude. I JUST installed these on my '86 4Runner haha! The only problem I had....I had to be creative around my 3.4 stuff. I also added rivnuts. 😊

I installed some on in my 1st gen Tacoma after watching your first video about them. =) (I also got the ultragauge holder from spiker.) The rivets are pretty strong, so you'll want to use a higher quality rivet gun. The cheapest harbor freight one I had didn't cut it and nearly ruined the rivets. Edit: just saw that the struts for this model don't use rivets.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 8 месяцев назад
Interesting the HF rivet gun couldn't handle it. Usually their stuff, even though it's more cheaply made, can do the job. Yeah, this kit is completely drilling and rivet free.

Hey Tim, Just learned about your channel and seen quite a few videos. What's great about your videos for me is how deep you get into details explaining everything and also the great camera work. Thank you - Now, i have a question re adding this mod to my Toyota Highlander first gen. 2004. I was wondering if you had any tips and tricks to help me to do this on my truck, like what size struts to buy and where to bolt them down. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 3 месяца назад
I'm happy to know you appreciate the detail our videos offer. As for doing this modification on your Highlander, we don't spec the parts for these kits. Our buddy Leon, who owns Spiker Engineering, does it. So, I couldn't advise you on what you need for this job. Check with Leon and see if he makes a kit for a Highlander. We provide his contact information in the video description. Good luck!

When you went to close the hood from the center, I saw the hood slightly tweak. I guess you just need to make sure you're pushing down closer to both edges when closing the hood so it does bend like the Chevy square bodies. Otherwise, it looks like a good kit.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 8 месяцев назад
I don't think the flex in the hood would be an issue, but yeah, if you grab on either side, it would flex less. I don't think the hood or the hood hinges could bend that easily.

Yes spiker also makes a kit for our 3rd gens. I'm not sure if it installs the same way that this kit does though. Might require some drilling maybe. I'm not sure

5:01 serrated flange nuts...
@TimmyTheToolman

Yes. The face of the nut has serrations, so it grabs against the surface it contacts and doesn't slip.

Great video Timmy, I have a 91' Toyota 3.0L 6CL EFI Longbed pickup truck. It has the rod. It's very heavy. I'm 83 years old, and I would like to put Hood Struts on the hood. It looks like I just need to drill one hole on each side. I'm not sure what size strut I need to buy. Can someone help me figure that out. I don't know the weight of the hood. Ben M.

rather keep the prop rod and the money. hood comes off for major repairs.

Ok, keep your rod.
@quillaja
@quillaja 8 месяцев назад
You can still take the hood off and keep your rod on the truck. The struts detach. But it's your truck, money, and choice.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 8 месяцев назад
@@quillaja I think he was trying to say, when he's doing an involved job, he just removes the hood, so the prop rod being in the way isn't an issue for him. Sure, if I'm going to pull an engine, I'll remove the hood. Other than that, there's no reason to remove it.
