I told my husband I wanted a divorce in August, 2010, then a week later we had a leak at our house and I spent 3 mos. in a hotel because I'm allergic to mold and dust. Week after I got back, my brother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma so we had to keep our house in case he needed to come live there if he lost his house. I moved upstairs and he stayed downstairs and we were roommates until Feb, 2014 when we finally sold the house and decided it was ok to move on, as my brother was stable. That's 3.5 years we lived together after deciding to divorce. It was fine. No drama. I get it. Just because you divorce doesn't mean you have to hate each other. Doesn't mean anyone cheated or there was some huge one thing, it's just all the little stuff that tells you, happy is elsewhere. No need to rake the Ex over the coals, just be grownups realizing it's over and moving on wishing each other well. I admire you for being respectful and not talking about it.

my parents were married for 30 years and my mom told me after their 5th year she started to think of him as a roommate. she stayed another 25 years and regrets it and she saw your video with me and she said she's . proud you loved yourself enough to leave something that wasn't giving you what you needed
I am first hand proof that two people that are bad for each other staying together is just as harmful. The arguing, screaming, having sad and unhappy parents together is worse than happy ones apart. Do what makes you feel good and don't accept anything but what you deserve. And don't care what anyone else's expectations for "your family" is.
I will never understand why Jaclyn gets so much negativity towards her online. She seems like one of the kindest, sweetest people. I guess people are just jealous. I actually feel sorry for you in regards to social media. I understand there is the whole element of you choose to put your life on social media, so you must expect questions. But I genuinely saw someone comment on your Twitter (someone who obviously had never met you) that you owed it to her to try and save your marriage. She referred to you as 'my Jaclyn and Jon', and asked if you couldn't try harder to save your marriage for her. This complete stranger wanted you to stay in your marriage just for her. She basically said her happiness depended on it. Some people are really strange, and have no right to ask those things of you. I am glad you and Jon are both happier and doing well now.
People get so caught up in social media they forget that the influencers are real people. That person needs to seek professional help. I’d be ashamed of myself if I’d ever said something like that.

About the "roommate - not a husband" -thing: I had exactly the same problem. My ex-boyfriend would be gaming all night and wake up super late, while i went to bed early to go to school in the morning. Everything he did when we were together started to anoy me, because there was no connection anymore. Eventually i felt so lonely and "single" that I fel in love with someone else. It's something that happens and it's okay to have these feelings, there is nothing to be ashamed about and don't listen to anyone else's hate!

I was not married but I was in a relationship for three years and completely know how you feel. I gave it my all! And my family and friends could see how much it drained from me. Like you said I felt single and lonely for so long. It made me almost in-human. It gave me horrible anxiety and depression. I ended it a year ago as I couldnt take it anymore. 7 months ago I met the love of my life, my anxiety went from an 11/10 to a 2/10. Looking back now I know in my heart God put me through a lesson I needed to learn. Your time will come where someone will make everything feel like it happened for a reason! Much love girl! I find myself not wanting to file because I’m holding out hope that I could restart that love, and make it the partnership I dream of. Instead, it was very much like yours. Roommates and not partners. We never ate, slept, or woke at the same time. I always felt so alone in it. Like I was trying and giving my all to someone who couldn’t show up for me. it’s so good to know others are in the same boat. i got married 8 year ago when i was 23 and i stuck it out because i have two boys and didn’t know what would happen if we split when they were little and i was terrified of being a single mother. i decided to separate to give them time to adjust to us not being together because it’s just like jaclyn said, i felt like i had a roommate. i’m almost 30 and feel stronger and more stable than when i was 23. anyways sorry for the long text but this topic if close to my heart and i struggled for over a year with this decision.

I felt your real talk on your divorce on another level. Girł I was there in my first marriage. I wasn't in love with my ex-husband for years. After almost 11 years of marriage and two children, we separated. While I love the father he is and would never say anything negative about him in the presence of our kids, I was so relieved to officially move on. I'm now remarried to the LOVE of my life and just recently purchased our dream home and land. While our marriage isn't perfect (what marriage is?), my life is more than I could ever have dreamed of. Sometimes two people who met and loved at such a young age don't grow up to be the same people they were. And that's ok! We grow and change and sometimes we grow incompatible. It's cruel to everyone involved to pretend to be in love if that's no longer the feeling. I wanted to be happy and I wanted my ex-husband to be happy as well. And 7 years later, we both are! I wish you and Jon all the best in life and you both deserve to be happy.

I agree. I’ve been married over 15yrs. I’ve been thru that feeling quite a few times. But fortunately we’ve always managed to reconnect and get thru it. It’s always a very hard road but at the end of it there’s still always love so it’s worth fighting for my marriage. I know that’s not always the case for everyone.
I got so giddy and excited for you seeing how happy you were when you were talking about your life right now towards the end. I was in an extremely abusive relationship for years and it took me forever to leave. I have struggled dating since then because I was diagnosed with PTSD. Finally after a few years I went to EMDR therapy, also my health is coming back because I'm mentally in a better place, also found out I have pernicious anemia which is extremely treatable worth B12 shots so I'm feeling great and then bam went on a date last night and just feel very happy where I am in life and attracting great people into my life instead of toxic people now because I've healed the things in me that attracted narcissistic, alcoholic men into my life So happy for you! I know how you feel! Keep doing you, loving you first and foremost!

I stayed with me ex who was an addict for way too long, stayed with him through multiple rehabs and through stealing, cheating and a lot of toxic energy... it felt so good to finally walk away and move on sometimes you can care about and love someone from a distance. Marissa Renee I know exactly how you feel. My ex relapsed twice while we were together. The first time, he came to me pretty quickly and we got him in rehab. The second time, he went pretty deep and hid it so well I had absolutely no clue. It ended up putting my kids in danger and getting him arrested. Between that and his (pre-existing) narcissitic behavior, I decided I was done immediately. It was scary and freeing, all at the same time. But life has gotten better. I sincerely hope yours has too.
The feeling of being in a relationship and it being more like a roommate feels horribly alone. I so understand that. Oh yeah. Definitely been there. I had a child with my ex after 3 years of being together and I stayed with him until my son was 3 because I thought it was the right thing to do and I was like “well this is my life now I guess” even though I was the most unhappy. I can’t remember a time where I was less happy. And finally I figured out that i deserved better and now I have a fantastic fiancé and he’s a great stepdad to my kid and everything is amazing. Never settle for less than you deserve.
Mel Hassan I didn't hear anything about what was best for your kids, but I'm assuming that's what you mean. Once you have a child, they become top priority always, or certainly should. Parents have the tendency to think what's best is to stay together, but I can assure anyone that kids are resilient and do much better in a healthy two household, co-parenting situation than stuck in a living hell with both parents... as long as you can say you turned over every stone to try to make it work and just couldn't (and say it with 100% honesty.)
random 1 oh no that’s what I meant. For some reason I thought that would be best for him because my parents are divorced and I don’t know why but I didn’t want that situation for him. But yeah I can assure you I wouldn’t have stayed in that situation if I didn’t think at the time it was what was best. I was wrong. I figured out that honestly I was the only one supporting my child emotionally and monetarily so it was like “well really how is staying with him benefiting my child at all?” It wasn’t beneficial for either one of us for me to stay with his dad so but it just took me a while to figure that out. Now he has someone he can truly look up to so it’s a win-win.

Parents feel guilty breaking up the family, but the child thanks you later when it is done out of concern for them, and they get the best of both worlds like you said. Glad to hear things are going so well for you all. That's what life is all about... making the best out of the cards we've been given and trying to remedy our mis steps the best we can. I am gonna be 23 next week and I spent when I first started dating at 16 to the age I am now chasing after guys. After my last failed attempt I realized I had to ENJOY being single, finding myself, getting to know myself before I could ever love someone else. I have been the HAPPIEST I have ever been in my LIFE! I came to realize that while everyone I know is getting married, having kids, buying houses together, etc, that actually a lot of them are rushing into it and are gonna end up unhappy in the long run, and I felt like I had to rush too because everyone else is posting it on social media. I am now finding myself, enjoying being single, and distanced myself from social media and I am honestly HAPPY! Even last year I was not the same person I am now, and I cannot imagine truly marrying someone and starting a family now.

Michigan Mommy the hard almost broke me. I could even say it did break me. He was mean, cold, had a gaming addiction and was even a bit abusive. I made plenty of mistakes. I know I held onto the hurt and I got petty plenty of times. But my turn around was when I decided that I would just love him. I wasn't going to say anything negative about him to change my own mindset. I was going to only respond in love. I did a lot of The Love Dare. He had to choose to change, but I think my change was the catalyst. It stopped the back and forth bickering and it kind of brought us back to that time when we were first in love and literally fighting everything to be together. It's been just over a year since things started turning around and we're newly pregnant, falling in love again and actually loving marriage again. You can get there! It takes work and determination. For many it does work out! I hope it does for you.

The way you described your relationship with Jon is so real and it's exactly what I went through with my ex. I wasn't happy for a long time and it took me awhile to actually do something about it. It wasn't just about a lack of romance... it was about how we became friends and we weren't even trying to be with each other any more. But when you once loved someone, it's hard to let them go. That's the reason so many marriages fail these days. People think of marriage so casually and when they aren't "happy" they jump ship, instead of actually working at it and realizing sometimes you go through difficult reasons. It really is a shame.
I totally relate in being lonely while still in a relationship and feeling single despite being in a relationship, I'm sure a lot of people feel that way. Ending my relationship felt like such a failure but happiness was around the corner. I think we forget how much more is out in the world and forget that we all deserve the best. I’ve definitely been in a marriage that looked like it was for sure ending. Luckily, it didn’t. It’s been an amazing healing journey. Marriage isn’t a feeling. It’s a commitment to fix and change and it takes work! However, I do not judge those that end it because everything is different from situation to situations. ❤️

Divorce sucks but be blessed you don't have kids together. Becoming a single mom without a steady income has been the hardest thing I've done. Divorce is shitty but I am glad I did it, even if that means I am poor and struggling. This won't last forever and I have positive things in store 💜. Happy you are doing well and practicing self care again. I totally understand what it is like to just not be in love anymore. Then u start to build resentments and it gets worse. I am glad you got out now.

Jaclyn, my parents, after 18 years have decided to get a divorce and they decided this right before i'm supposed to be leaving for college 8 hours away. I've always known they were unhappy and recently they haven't been sleeping in the same bed and it's been so hard for me. Even though I could see it coming it's been hard to fathom what my future is going to look like. My dad is going to move 12 hours away and my mom will be staying in my hometown which is what scares me the most. I don't know where I'm supposed to go when I'm on break from college. I just wanted to let you know that it makes me feel better to see how you have grown from this experience because I'm scared for my mom. I hope she can be strong like you and come out of this happier than she has been in years.

Erin Archard my parents got divorced my freshman year/sophomore year. dad stayed in hometown and mom moved 12 hours away. It’s really hard, but it gets easier I promise!! on christmas, I go home (usually where I was living at the time), then I spend one week there and another week at my dads. Thanksgiving I usually just choose which one I want to go to, which is hard because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I just chose whoever’s family celebrated thanksgiving more! I hope this helps a little. I hope college is great to you, I start in two weeks and i’m terrified 😂

I’m on daughters channel but listening to you, I can relate. My daughters father was the only man I ever truly THOUGHT I loved. He was controlling, mean, violent and left me alone through everything. The only time he wanted anything to do with me is when he wanted something from me. My money, sex, laundry, dinner. I TOOK IT FOR 9 YEARS AND KNEW FROM VERY FIRST DAY HE DIDNT LOVE ME AT ALL. WHY? Why do we stay? Childhood f’s a person up. AT LEAST MINE DID. Be glad you are free even if he wasn’t mean to you. Not being cared for and loved hurts just as bad as violence. I know. Good luck!
My mom went through the same thing with my dad, knowing what you knew too, and went through a jacked up childhood too. She dealt with him for 21 years. Thankfully now we're all free for 11 years. Hope you and your family are well and free too! xD Idk why I just wanted to share.

I have told my daughter whose channel I’m on that she at 19 could deal with his family alone because every time I dealt with them I thought of him and all the really horribly mean and violent things he did directly to me. I couldn’t bare it any longer. As long as they were good to her, and they were. Thank god! I couldn’t have any contact with any of them. It’s been a lot better in my mind and soul for last 3 years and to this day he tries to get back in. I can’t even look at him. We didn’t click anymore but we still tried to work it out. It’s been 2 & 1/2 years that I’ve been single, living my live & having fun with family & friends.
