Picture this: you’re a fish in the Late Cretaceous, swimming along the seas of what we now know as Northern Africa. The water’s warm - things could be worse. But suddenly, you feel like there’s something behind you. You turn around, but it’s too late for you: you’re face to face with the largest carnivorous dinosaur to ever be discovered, the Spinosaurus. But what IS a Spinosaurus?

Spinosaurus is a damn fascinating beast of ancient times.....it gives me visuals of massive river systems stalked by these ancient titans, their conflicts with ancient large crocodiles (how would that go down I wonder), and the abundance of ocean life with all kinds of fish and sharks preyed on by Spinosaurus. I'm still of the opinion, that the Spinosaurus' Sail was, at least partially, for heat regulation. I mean, it doesn't necessarily matter, if it was just semi aquatic or spent large quantities of time in or under water, water tends to absorb your body heat and cooling you down, so it would be just really practical to just stick your back sail into the sun while floating or swimming at the surface to quickly heat your body back up once you start to get a bit chilly. Also, it could've used its Sail as a form of stabilizer, or whatever job the back fins of most fish, whales and dolphins serve.
@docmcquack7252
@docmcquack7252 2 месяца назад
That's what I was thinking. Similar to crocs, staying mostly in the shallows with the sail used for heat control and maybe a fat storage. Ability to traverse land, but mostly a lifestyle like crocodelians.

Everyone loves a mystery, and this dinosaur has it all. Its true mystic power is how rare and fragmentary these fossils are in the geological record. I have many fossils from Tyrannosaurus rex and Spinosaurus, and the Spinosaurus bones hold my interest in regarding further study the most. They are extremely dense in cellular structure and difficult to find. Teeth are common but frequently confused with contemporary mid Cretaceous crocodiles found in the same sediments. Having lost the original Egyptian specimens make this animals fossils even more interesting. Fortunately, I have been in association with friends with several paleontology specialists who have directly collected specimens in Morocco. This allowed me to work on several important specimens, and I regard these fossils as my favorite work. Many collectors around Europe and North America have obtained these fossils online from Morocco. If you're one of these individuals, please share your knowledge with other collectors and paleontologists to continue this saga.

We don't all love it at all, not when it's always regarding all important creatures we could never see. I still want to know why no one (even on Wiki) can explain why an absolutely MASSIVE skull of a Pachycephalosaurus STILL resides in London's Natural History Museum, yet everywhere else for so long depicts the creature as standing smaller than a human. This from the BIGGEST Pachycephalosaurid that for so long had been depicted as taller than a Tyannosaurus, which the placard and display info STILL show in Natural History Museum. Other things have changed there, why not this?

Some people are just too rigid in their ideas and beliefs. Just thinking about how other animals function and some common sense can probably reconstruct the Spinosaurus until we have a more complete skeleton. Spinosaurus was probably at least a decent, if not good, swimmer based on the recent tail bones discovered. Its sail was probably both heat regulation and display, if not also helpful when swimming or for balance in some way(idk, seems like it could be). The Spinosaurus likely walked on all 4 legs most of the time but could also walk on just hind legs for a shorter period of time. This would allow it to actually use its claws in combat or to catch and tear open prey. It seems like the Spinosaurus was an ambush predator in the water, whether while it was swimming or just wading. Thats how I believe you'd get a more accurate reconstruction of the Spinosaurus with the fossils people have found. Who knows for sure though. 🤷🏼‍♂️
@AgroAcro
@AgroAcro 10 месяцев назад
That's outdated. A recent study showed that Spinosaurus really wasn't a good swimmer and that quadrupedal walking thing has been disproven. It only could walk on two legs, it's knuckles couldn't handle walking on all fours and recent models show it's center of mass was directly over its back legs.

I think the debates will keep going on and on only until more complete fossil skeletons are found. Personally, there’s something about the latest reconstructed skeleton that just doesn’t feel right, it is a reconstruction made of bone fragments found in different location, size and time period, as well as fragments of other theropod species, there are just too many missing links in it, if you look at the reconstructed image it just doesn’t look natural, especially the proportion of body, limb and tail.. it shows a bizarre looking creature that can hardly walk on land or swim well in water. But I understand this is the best version they can create basing on the latest evidence available. Hopefully there are more complete skeletons to be found so that they can create a most realistic image of spinosaurus

I assumed it was to create a big shadow in the water that fish would gather around and The Spinosaurus would stalk its prey from the side on angle, having a crocodilian head would make this ideal for the ambush set up near the bank of the river/lake.

Those of us who have owned a 6 foot adult Iguana and taken it down to the clear tidepools at the coast know exactly how the Spinosaurus swam and how fast. The hip and shoulder joints aren't the same but the rest is a scale model of your dino. They even have small spines. My primary advice is to add far more stored fat to the base of the tail to balance the front of the animal as Iguanas do. And yes, Iguanas can and do run on only their hind legs using their tail as a counter balance weight.

There are a LOT more differences than that. The draft for one, a full sized Spinosaurus Aegyptiacus would need 9 feet of water to properly swim, due to it's height at the rear shoulder girdle. Also a Green Iguana spines are just long scales that weigh almost nothing, not 6 foot rods of bone. Big difference in weight and balance there.

I would say that the Spinosaur is the Cayman from hell. The thing that gets me though. is that the anthropologists have overlooked the "lay-down" function of the dorsal spines...They most likely laid down in a duplex manner, were the dorsal bone laid down in a left right left right manner allowing the fin to flatten out into a configuration that resembled a flat topped double edged carapace shape. Maybe we should be paying attention to the fin configuration before we start saying it was a lousy swimmer?

We do know it walked on two legs precisely because its hand bones couldn't possibly support knuckle-walking; it could do it a total of *once*, and then its hands would break, and that really does remove its ability to hunt. It therefore was strictly bipedal.
@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking
@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking 11 месяцев назад
Unless - it used the front limbs for weight-bearing/balance when slipping through muddy shallows. Like a croc or beaver. The bodyweight would mostly be born by the water itself, and the abdomen/chest and general underside. The limbs / proportions are much like a seal's.
@chissstardestroyer
@chissstardestroyer 11 месяцев назад
@@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking No, it wouldn't have; its metacarples couldn't support knuckle-walking at all; nor could its hand-claws function that way- that's the only means the animal's anatomy could possibly function.
@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking
@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking 11 месяцев назад
@@chissstardestroyer Of course it couldn't knuckle walk- that person's an idiot for suggesting that. Since we have so few fossils and there's a debate about the actual size of the limbs... The bipedal debate can't be put to rest yet. We have to remember dinosaurs lived for millions of years and evolved for much longer than humans and hominids have been around. See how much we changed shape? As shallow seas formed, dried-up, became Rivers, became wetlands, became shallow seas again - we're going to find out they did a simple thing to survive. They adapted. When it was better to be bi-pedal; they were, primarily. When it was better to be mostly aquatic - they were. Scientists, for some reason, stop thinking outside the box. They, of all people, should understand how subspecies split off - but then may still have viable offspring with each other, and hybridize as a survival strategy. Like wolves, dogs, and coyotes today.

I can really imagine the Spinosaurus to be an semiaquatic animal like a crocodile. Besides swimming through the water to catch prey like fish, it could also use a crocodile's hunting technic: Waiting near the shore, standing still to blend in. The neural spines could be used - 1. as camouflage to pretent to be a rock and / or 2. In a similar way a dolphin uses it's dorsal fin for stabilizing and / or 3. to feel movement in the water. It would wait for long times that another animal would come close and then it would attack the pray.

Biggest? Sorry no T-rex weighs more than spinosaurus weighs. Spinosaurus is listed as weighing 7.5 to 9 tons. There is an unpublished paper that claims 12 to 19 tons but because its an unpublished paper it must be ignored. TRex initially was thought to weigh up to 8 tons but new papers cite TRex weighing up to 15 tons. The 8 ton aspect comes from remains such as Sue that weighed in around 9 tons, but new studies believe 20% of TRexs were larger than Sue and Scotty which is the largest found at over 9 1/2 tons.

So much to think about. I imagine them walking similar to kangaroos, using the much shorter front legs when not in a hurry. I think they would have ran on two legs. I have always pictured them as being at home in the water, adequate swimmers. Fish sleep, they don't have to be fast. It could be all in timing. If they want to compare them to crocodiles, why not also compare them to alligators, which walk up high and can run as well as climb chain link fences.

The thing with Jurassic Park dinosaurs, that seemingly most people forget, is, that they're *_all_* mutants. None of them is a straight up dinosaur that lived in the past, because they only ever found fragmentary DNA of them, and filled up the gaps with DNA from modern day animals that are, or that they thought to be, related to dinosaurs, like lizards or frogs. That's why Things from the books or movies contradicting what Scientists found still work. The movie said, that T-Rex could only see movement, while Scientists say that it most likely had exceptionally good eye sight, and there is this big Argument ever since. But guess what? The movies depiction of a T-Rex that can only see movement is still valid, because they spliced in frog DNA to fill the gaps in the genetic code, and many species of frogs indeed have movement based sight.

As a palaeontologist in training studying spinosaurus and other member of spinosauridae I’ll fact check this! 1:42 S. maroccanus is considered a dubious name as we believe the holotype species (S. aegyptiacus) to be the same as the neotype species (S. marccanus) and so there is only one Spinosaurus species considered valid. I like how he is actually showing the history of the discovery of spinosaurus not just the creature itself. 9:21 spinosauridae is a family not a group but it’s a minor detail. 9:50 a great piece of evidence for a fully aquatic spinosaurus 15:12 larger but not more massive (due to current estimates 16:30 more recent estimates put it at 7 tons 17:43 as surprising as it may sound this is actually accurate. Although the hump less so. Also you are directly reading off what the first search option says; www.livescience.com/24120-spinosaurus.html And I have to say… it’s not very accurate. So I wouldn’t use this site for information. 38:15 no. As seen in that diagram the centre of mass was likely just infront of the back legs. almost exactly the same as every other therapod and so it would have had no issue holding itself on its hind legs. Also it’s a very big step to go from a bipedal to a quadruple stance and it would be the only known therapod dinosaur to do so if that was true. So no. Spinosaurus is NOT quadrupedal as of our current knowledge.
@DreadEnder
@DreadEnder 11 месяцев назад
@@ProtiumPower I doubt that study is peer reviewed since the skeleton itself weighs a around 2 tons. Spinosaurus was determined to be bipedal in 2018 when a paper studying their centre of mass showed it was just in front of the hind legs, basically the same as any other theropod. And that was before the discovery of the tail. And the main purpose for long tails was weight distribution. Most recent studies place the largest specimen at 7.56 tons with an average potent variation showing a maximum of 8 tons. However a 9 ton spinosaurus could have been possible. And although I found an article from a couple months ago supporting the 13-22 ton estimate, it don’t think it’s peer reviewed. Please share your sources if you can find them.

Yeah I wonder where the fools got the idea that spinosaurus weighed 13 to 22 tons. Thank God that is an unpublished paper so we can ignore that stupidity. The 7.5 to 9 tons is a more reasonable estimation which puts spinosaurus as smaller than other larger land animals such as the Trex that is now estimated to weigh up to 15 tons. Wish I had the time to watch this video right now and really pay attention to it as I am curious if this video covers what my issue of Dinosaur magazine covered earlier this year about spinosaurus tail being finned and jointed for swimming which presents a strong argument that spinosaurus could have spent most of not all of its life in shallow coastal waters feasting on sea life.
@DreadEnder
@DreadEnder 9 месяцев назад
@@Milner62 the 15 ton estimate for tyrannosaurus is also pretty out there. An average of 9-10 tons is reasonable with 12 tons being the common limit for what we currently understand. Latest findings from earlier this year reported in Dinosaur magazine finds that spinosaurus tail was jointed for use for swimming and remains found indicate it was finned. With how little we have on spinosaurus in the means of remains we can only find out new information. We do know based off the jaw and the teeth that spinosaurus feasted on aquatic life. Question still remains of it moved on four legs or two legs.

For me Spino was a semi aquatic animal who primarily was hunting fish but I think similar to crocodiles also a lurking hunter that possibly could have attacked smaler dinos.In the water he was with this feets comparable to modern birds and with that tail to a row of water lizards.Also its long neck is reminds to many semi-aquatic birds that van swiming on the surface but also dive into the depths.The claws of the Spino could be used to hook up prey but also for defense.I think Spino were a high specialized dino that lived between land and water but mainly into water or swamps.That dino had found irs own very specialized corner and it was for a long time successfully.But as landscapes changed Spino died out because of its specialization and the lack of time to adaptation to new circumstances.

In many ways the Spinosaurus mode of operations is suggestive of today's crocodiles: good swimmers, combining ambush predator skills with scavenging habits. We don't know whether Spinosaurus was hot blooded or reptilian so it's a guess whether the "sail-like" physiology was used to sun-bask absorbing heat & regulating temperature in deeper colder waters where fish may have been more abundant.

something i think people need to do is stop complaining about inaccuracies within the jurassic park franchise. not only is it just a movie, it's confirmed a lot of the mutations and differences made in the "modern day" dinosaurs were caused by the modern reptile dna put into the dino genes to fill the gaps. thus why a lot still do not have feathers, this was a fixed issue in the newest movie as the pyroraptor and the therizinosaurus have feathers possibly because they started to use modern bird dna to fill in gaps! ON TOP of that a lot of the mutations were man made without the "help" of the modern reptile or bird dna. they modified them to make them scarier/cooler because they were meant to be amusement park attractions !! so people complaining about the inaccuracies is something that has always been a pet peeve of mine because all the answers to those inaccuracies are laid out in front of them within the movie !! of course there is more to this considering dinosaurs are changing every day due to new discoveries but for the sake of the movies the answers are right there

Thing about the Spino is it killing a rex coukd've been realistic. Definately not as easy as seen in the movie but for what we know the Spino was the apex of the land and water of its region which even humans cant necessarily claim. Larger, heavier, stronger, faster, more agile, most certainly smarter (due to their largely fish diet) and quite possible more durable due to it's quadrapedal status. In fact this branch of the family tree, stem mammals, is the branch of life that would ultimately "evolve" away from being reptiles and into mallas. Hence the term" mammal-like-reptiles." While I understand the Spinosaur and some other dinosaurs ended up having its own term "Spinosaurids" they were really just "Large stem mammals." Having the same evolutionary traits for largely the same reason just being too large to classify as such.

Whilst T-Rex has the strongest bite force of anything we know of. Spinosaurus's largest specimen NHMUK VP R-16421 is bigger than Scotty, the largest T-Rex specimen. We also have to account for Spinosaurus's tail; the largest for any theropod we know of. As well as its arms which only Therizinosaurus, which isn't carnivorous, even compares to. That's also not accounting for the fact that we know Spinosaurus could fight and potentially kill a Carcharodontosaurus with its bite, given the private collection specimen that has Spinosaurus teeth in a Carcharodontosaurus's vertebrae.
