Cut-Rate Commander - Precon Upgrade Guide for Vampiric Bloodline
Starting off the Channels first Precon Upgrade guide, we'll be taking a look at the Vampiric Bloodline Precon from Innistrad Crimson Vow and its patriarch - Strefan, Maurer Progenitor.
Playing to Strefan's strength of generating blood tokens as damage is taken then using that blood to cheat his vampire brood into play - this build will aim to maximize the value of that by tweaking this precon into a more big evasive vampire build with a splash of +1/+1 counter generation. More big vampire (or swapping our some of the existing ones for more potent picks) will get us more value out of our commanders vampire summoning, in addition to keeping the blood flowing to summon even more vamps as they get over blockers for direct damage. And by adding +1/+1 counters to the mix, which some vampires already have an affinity for, we'll be able to upgrade our smaller vamps into real threats and big vampires to terrifying ones. And of course, we'll need to make sure that Strefan lives to continue spawning his progeny, so protect sources will need to be implemented to make sure Strefan lives and keep the blood flowing until our opponents are bled dry.
Let me know if the comments below if you agree with my choices and/or what you would add to the deck instead. Also, let me know know who you would like to see next by voting on in the comments on the three choices of commander listed at the end of the video.

Be sure to Like, Comment and Subscribe if you liked the video and would like me to make content like this in the future. Also, let me know if you like this shorter form video format for Precons, as since this is the channels first one any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hey Grazzet! Just a quick question. I am a fairly new MTG player and I really like to upgrade my precons following your guideline. They have been working pretty well. I was wondering, since I like to put the extra budget into them, which cards should I cut to put the upgrades in? I know this is an old precon, but I need your help, please. Thank you very much and keep up the amazing work!!

This has been the most helpful form of video I’ve seen for upgrading precons because you showcase the entirety of what you take out followed by exactly what you’d replace it with following a very solid budget! Much appreciated for your insight to deck building and looking forward to more! Definitely subscribing after watching this.

This is such a great idea! I'm glad to see precons getting some love. One small idea could be doing something similar to 'here's all the cards we are taking out and putting in, and here's why.' I saw you give explanations of the changes, which is great, I know a good portion would like the quick and dirty, so to speak.

Thanks for for the feedback! Would you be referring to a more quick overview of the card types I would be cutting (such as the Madness focused cards and the aristocrats pieces in the build for example) before I go into specific details in the cuts and upgrades sections?

I've got a few suggestions, some of which didn't exist when this video was made. Ingenious Artillerist and Mirkwood Bats aren't vampires but they provide damage as Blood tokens are generated. Inspiring Statuary let's the blood tokens help cast things, t Ghirapur Aether Grid lets them contribute damage.

*in a heavy Romanian Aristocratic accent* Ah, a surprise to be sure, but a very welcome one! I really like this spin on the traditional Cut-Rate Formula, as it wonderfully gives your content that small bit of spice. The build will definitely go through testing on my end, and it will be quite the tasty treat, so good job! And this is where I would have said which precon I would pick in the vote... IF I HAD ONE!!! Jokes aside, consider putting a vote here as well, as the voting part of each video was one of the main factors that got me hooked to your content. That engagement can be a hell of a drug sometimes, I tell ya! Day 116 of waiting for Grazzet's face reveal. How exactly do you test out decks? Because you did mention that a certain Mono-Black Legendary I Will Not Spoil was underperforming during your testing, and I got curious. Though, if you'd prefer to keep your testing methods a Coffee Donator-only secret or something similar, I won't mind.
@GrazzetMTG
@GrazzetMTG 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the new video format type! I likely will consider putting a vote here if I do more the the future for maybe voting on which precon I should cover next, but seeing as we only have one other in this set we'll just have to wait for the next one! As far as testing - I primarily use Table Top Simulator to test out decks with my playgroup - seeing as it perfectly lets me proxy all the cards and cuts down on shuffling time for quicker games. Certainly does have all the bells and whistles as MTG Online or Arena, but its as close to playing with physical cards as you can get while playing digitally (in my opinion).

Great production and content, as usual! Wondering what people think about adding a few picks of mine: Juri, Master of Revue: Could get really big with the blood tokens and does damage when it dies to any target. Faith of the Devoted. it's 3c and only 10 cents, does plenty of work in EDH format. Chaos Warp, 3 mana instant to trade a blood token for a (likely) permanent that goes on to the battlefield, or in a pinch, a removal. Reckless Fireweaver, 2C to ping each opponent for 1 damage every time an artifact enters the playing field under your control. Usually 3-4 damage per turn with our Commander out.
@GrazzetMTG
@GrazzetMTG 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed it and here are my thoughts on the cards you mentioned: Juri, Master of Revue - feels more at home in a aristocrats build since this deck will usually be going over blockers than killing them. Faith of the Devoted - this would be great if the we took the deck in a more madness direction but in this build is sadly doesn't work (but can work if you decide to keep the self discarding cards in the core build). Chaos Warp - Great card and would be a great addition - only reason its not in this build is due to having us go over budget, but I would add it in a heartbeat! Reckless Fireweaver - decent card that can get us value as we create blood but in this build I would rather see cards that ping our opponents to generate more blood early if your going this route - such as Blisterspit Gremlin and Spear Spewer. Still, not a bad payoff if you're going all in on blood production.

I'll start with saying i enjoyed the upgrade. However, i had to watch it twice :D First time I was listening to this one while browsing, and i got confused a lot of times on if a card is in the deck or it's being added. Maybe do only ins/outs? That will drastically change the runtime though. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoyed it! I have considered just doing what cards to keep and what to add but figured I should at least give a brief mention to some cards that were cut that may seem odd (like expensive cards, new cards, and cards that would fit the game-plan I'm going for but simply weren't good enough) - to both answer any questions regarding cuts in the video and providing some additional info from what other deck tech upgrades may provide. Still, I'm certainly not married to the idea, so I may play around with it or maybe even leave it up to a vote to see if I should keep it or not... We'll have to see.

Great idea to mix up your series for upgrading new precons, especially to get them focused on a single theme (i.e. tribal) so the synergy is greater from the get-go. Curious to see how you'll buff the Spirits precon as that was widely considered underwhelming, should you choose to go that route.

Hey man loved this video, just subscribed. Just got confused in one part of the video when you said that the token of molten echoes gets exiled before it has a chance to swing. Could you explain how? I’m new to the game and I’ve read the card like 20 times and still don’t get it. Checked Reddit on this but couldn’t find anything. Thanks in advance!
@GrazzetMTG
@GrazzetMTG 2 года назад
Glad you enjoyed the build and welcome to the channel! Regarding Strefan, Maurer Progenitor and Molten Echoes, this is what would happen. We would declare an attack, sacing the blood token and summoning a vampire from our hand for free. Molten Echo's see's this and creates a token copy of the vampire we just summoned, but since we already declared attackers the token won't be able to attack that turn - so it will end up getting exiled at end of turn for nothing. Hope that helps! It still still works if we summon our vampires normally, just not when we use Strefan's ability to cheat them out.

Personally I would prefer if the cost of the deck is not used in the budget. I get the point of it and for some I'm sure they are happy, but what I prefer to do when I take these precons is take them from what I brought them at up to a high end deck, for instance I took Prosper when he was released and brought it up to my main deck now and I've done that with a few others in the past. I just feel the thirty dollars here could have been used for better card upgrades. I do like this though and wouldn't mind seeing more of them, of course with the above mentioned changes, again just personal taste but hey, you asked :P
@GrazzetMTG
@GrazzetMTG 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback and for enjoying the content! I did consider just going a straight up $65 dollars in new cards but ultimately decided that in that I would leave it as $65 with the price including the base deck to really make it $65 instead of ending up with a final price somewhere closer to the $90 mark. But maybe I could expand on the Upgrades portion of the video to include some specific price point increases (like $30 more for example) to make is bring it up to $65 in raw upgrades if you have the money to spend. May be something I need to look into..

@@GrazzetMTG Yeah I like your videos being as budget as possible, I’ve enjoyed just honestly buying some decks but like this I would appreciate an occasional high cost versions of some decks that are real popular, like a proper upgrade of “here is the cheap, here is how you can make it super strong with an extra fourty-sixty dollars” and show what you would take out

That would be Chaos Warp, since its and instant speed removal option that deals with any permanents. I could have sworn it was in this build but as it turns out I was wrong (I checked the decklist and it wasn't on it). I am more or less underwhelmed by Bloodlord of Vaasgoth. His Problem is, that he only triggers, when i cast vampires. And this deck does not want to hard cast vampires the most time. It wants to cheat them in by strefan, revival or for example Bolas Citadel. So the bloodlord ist often very pointless even when he gets cheated in by himself. To often he enters just as a 3/3 flyer. To weak and to dependent in my eys.
