awesome video! there is also a record which I think is rarely mentioned but is one of the best death metal records IMHO: Disincarnate "Dreams Of Carrion Kind" where Murphy recorded majority of the guitar tracks including bass.

Honestly those are two of the best and most important Death Metal albums of all time. I have no idea why Spiritual Healing often gets ranked quite low in the Death discography. It is an absolute brutal record from start to finish, and the title track is an absolute ripper. Cause of Death is also an fantastic, just raw and pure death metal album. It would be so hard to choose between these two iconic albums, but I think I’d go with Cause of Death, just because I think the riffs are a little bit more catchy and heavier in the way they sound. 1990 was a great year for rock/metal. Rust In Peace, Cowboys From Hell, Souls Of Black, Painkiller, Passion & Warfare, Facelift, Seasons In The Abyss, Frizzle Fry.....they just don't make 'em like that anymore.
That tapping riff at the start of spiritual healing is earth shattering. Damn Chuck was a genius. While I still consider Eddie the king of tapping I love Chucks more laid back tapping style. Also love the tapping riff in crystal mountain.
I don't think Chuck was satisfied with that album, during touring he quit and gone to record Human with new members and really created a Masterpiece 🤘🏻
I give it to spiritual healing when you take into context the lyrics and the overall messages of each song. While I agree Cause of Death hits a little harder, Spiritual Healing hits topics that are insanely personal to me as someone who grew up with evangelical family. We used to pray around the TV when benny hinn would come on. The things Chuck wrote in that album changed my entire life.
Except allen west wrote half of the songs on cause of death before he left, watch or read the interview with decibel magazine obituary did, tardy himself said the exact same thing, west wrote half of the songs.
Spiritual Healing for it's creativity and progressive tendencies, Cause of Death for pure caveman heaviness. I prefer Death overall. Also, you nailed the Spiritual Healing tone! 🤘
My favorite death metal albums of all time. Both have James Murphy and his beautiful solos. It's amazing to see guitarists pay homage to classic death metal bands and metal bands, in general. Superb playing sir🤘🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for paying homage to both these crushing albums. Your tone on these riffs is spot on. "Spiritual Healing" got mixed reviews, but make no mistake it slays all day now and forever. "Cause of Death" will forever go down in the collection of "one of the best of death metal albums of all time".
100% without a doubt. And thats saying something because Death fills up every other slot lmfao. Jokes aside, I think there is room for a Morbid Angel or Bolt Thrower album too.
I cannot imagine Death Metal without either of these albums. A highlight for me on the Death album is the opening riff to the title track ("Spiritual healing") but Obituary shine with their heaviness on "Turned inside out".
I'm always impressed by the sound that Trevor Perez can get out of a Fender Stratocaster. Anyway, I got to see these two bands TOGETHER in 1994 along with an up and coming band called Cannibal Corpse.
@@vacantplanet why would you quit because of how someone else plays,comparing yourself to professional musicians when you are just learning is never going to be good for your confidence,takes alot of time to get really good at guitar, besides that there's alot more than technicality, playing guitar is about expressing yourself not imitating someone else

Obituary is my favorite death metal band. Simple riffs, yet so heavy and catchy. Death ended on this album for me, never liked the progressive elements nor Chuck's vocal change on their next albums. But Leprosy and Spiritual Healing are amazing.
I literally had my obituary cause of death shirt on as I seen this! The guitar tone on obituary cause of death is super brutal but spiritual healing is really iconic and has some classics on there
Both of these albums are my favorite from both of these bands! I thought Spiritual healing was the winner at first but hearing these killer riffs from Cause of Death again make it a toss up. Too close to call! Great video man! Thank you!

I just saw Obituary open for BLS a few weeks ago. They killed it!!! I wish I would've had the opportunity to see Death live. Chuck stopped touring the same year i went to my 1st concert (1999).

I was listening to Spiritual Healing today in my car. The best riffs of each and every song aren’t the main ones. They are somewhere in the middle. Listen up for those awesome twin melody licks halfway through each song on Spiritual Healing!
Beautiful work! It's a really nice chance to compare the styles of the two bands in this era. To my ear, Chuck's writing was more rooted in classic heavy metal whereas Obituary's riffs were choppy and Celtic Frost-sounding. Anyhow, I'll never grow tired of listening to those 2 albums.
Adding my correction. My fav Obituary riff from Turned inside out is there!!!!!!!!!!Wow sounds real awesome. What a friggin riff. They should play that riff longer and twice in the song.
