Grinnel & Biz nailed it.....Whitt missed it. Always want one dissenter to create a good conversation. Any old school hockey follower loved Cherry. Unfortunately Cherry's best before date expired 10+ yrs ago, Biz captured it better than most. Can't be on his pedestal and get away with that kind of xenophobic rhetoric Cherry was inevitably gonna go down.....he likely regrets going down on the relatively lame comments by his standards......kudos to Sportsnet for having the balls to do the right thing..... Cherry likely wished he'd gone down in bigger flames Kinda reminds us of Trump and his rhetoric.......not good for the US or Canada!!! Loved your podcasts with Tocchet......best ever!

I don't think this was balanced at all. These were extremely basic and ignorant points. A thorough review of the topic would include, for example, the work of Robert Putnam et al from Harvard University on Social Capital, historic rates of immigration, migration sources, historic composition of countries, the definition of a nation, and, yes, even genetics. No-one said it would be comfortable. The truth rarely is. This was just pablum from guys attempting to position themselves for Sportsnet jobs. Sportsnet made a clear statement of what it's official ideology is. Note the word ideology. That's different from truth. Cherry should educate himself more on the topic before spouting off his mouth, but he's aware there is an issue. Toronto's crime rate has been consistently and dramatically over historical averages from 1900-1960 for decades now. What's the difference? If it is migration, which is an honest point of discussion, the people that are affected by the higher rates (the old stock who are the victims in this case) deserve an answer. There should be no limits to the questions asked.

What bothers me is this is what Don has always been like. This is what we expect of him. I think this situation says more about people who felt “hurt” by this than it does about Don. It’s easier to get rid of 1 man, than to tell a group of people to be less sensitive.
@andrewm4951
@andrewm4951 4 года назад
You have to also remember. These older people grew up in different times then we did. Where sensitive people were not all over the place throwing emotions, and it was okay to have a different opinion. Don is don. Like you said, Sometimes he says stupid shit, thats just don. But thats also why everyone liked him. He wasnt afraid to say what was on his mind.

Andrew M agreed! Absolutely the case. I’m ashamed to say it’s people of my generation who are so sensitive about this. It’s also a fact that for the last few years, it’s sort of common understanding that he’s the butt end of jokes. We loved him and looked forward to his commentary but took it serious maybe 1 out of 20 times...

Sensitive mate? He was always on the thin line of xenophobia, but he kept it on a hockey level with the whole bashing of Europeans. In this instance, he said "you people come here, and enjoy our milk and honey." He was talking about brown/black/Asian immigrants was way too general. I still like Cherry, I don't believe he's racist, but he went over the line by pinning this disrespect and unappreciatiation on minorities. How insensitive do you want people to be???

When me and 6 of my white friends were there, we recieved many comments such as “you guys arent from around here are you”. We were a visible minority and were singled out. It didn't warrant a firing offense. However, he did single out immigrants and newcomers when he said you people come here and enjoy our way of life. I'm a huge Don Cherry fan, but I was a newcomer too and I always wear my poppy. Infact, many of my Caucasian friends do not wear poppies. Was I offended? No, I'm not a leftie, but I was disappointed that he singled us out. Don has had interviews in the past where he clearly showed he was anti-immigration and pretty xenophobic (prejudiced against people from other countries), so this is nothing new from him. I think everyone should be wearing poppies, including Canadian-born people. Go to any University or government building in a major city and you'll see how many people don't wear poppies. As Biz said, Don is speaking from a Toronto context too so some people took demographic fact that many Indians, Pakis and Somalians are around there and formed their own conclusions about race. Now this I disagree with, the man is no racist, he's offended Swedes and Russians more than any other group. He's just a xenophobe.
@dc013

Respectfully, it is "righties" that are offended and bothered by people not wearing a poppy... Lefties are offended that he singled out immigrants (with his "you people come here....") and, in this case, they're right.
@CanucksHub
@CanucksHub 4 года назад
I really liked your guys' thoughts about the topic. I also liked how Biz talked about just because someone is not wearing a poppy doesn't mean they don't respect those who gave up their lives for our freedom. A lot of immigrants coming from India, especially in the Punjab region come from military families, if it wasn't their grandfathers fighting in WW1 or 2 it was their grandfathers brother fighting side by side with Canadians, so I highly doubt the absence means they're being disrespectful. I feel like if Don took an approach on informing new people about wearing poppies would it have been a lot better. Instead he chose a phrase the singles people out. He defo shouldn't have gotten fired.

Im American and it upset me to see Don Cherry vilified and fired. "You People" need to understand what ERA mr cherry comes from. West vs East, Capitalism vs Communism. Don Cherry was raised in the cold war. Don Cherry is a patriot who loves his country and expects everyone in it, to love it as well. Unfortunately were witnessing a turning of the tide. Don Cherry was only trying to articulate his disgust for a generation and people who dont love and support those who sacrificed the most. We live in a world of cancel culture and ideologies.
