+Cinemassacre if you don't mind my suggestion, why not have Bootsy play Shadowgate on NES with you two before october is over? its definately got its fair share of spookiness as well as alot of tension that any one wrong move and you could die in it.
My favorite in the series, this game hella traumatized me as a child. I'm surprised James never played this game as you're a horror buff, Splatterhouse is such an underrated scary series.
I absolutely love the emotional progression in this episode. The beginning was "Well, this game is very different than 2, I'm not sure I like it" and slowly led up to "HAHHAA THIS GAME IS AWESOME!!!!!" :)
The problem with the great Genesis games is that nobody really knows about them. How many people played Crusader of Centy? How many people played Shining Force II? How many people played Gunstar Heroes, Ecco the Dolphin? Shadowrun? Comix Zone. Cyborg Justice. The Phantasy Star games. There were some legendary games on that system, but nobody really knows about a lot of them except for people who had the system.
+Marcel Weber haha well I rented it when I was a kid, and I remember loving it, but who knows now? The Genesis stuff was a lot more experimental and weird, but that's what I loved about it. I mean...Ecco the dolphin?? What a crazy idea but a great game. The Sega CD has some amazing stuff on it that nobody really played. Dark Wizard. Vay. Snatcher. Mansion of Hidden Souls. Popful Mail.
+Sonny Fernandez alone for Snatcher the SEGA CD was worth it. Hideo Kojima man^^ I bet not many people even know that he made other games than Metal Gear lol. thank god hes not with Konami anymore. i cant see Metal Gear anymore. now lets see what hes doing next^^
I love how they started saying this game was the Double Dragon 3 of Splatterhouse and ended up saying this game is awesome. Man I loved this game when I was a kid.
I used to have this game when I was younger and that time limit used to piss me off. You have to the end of each stage within a certain amount of time or you'll get one of the "bad endings". As a horror fan, I really wanted to take my time and explore each level as there's quite a few rooms and sequences that are homages to horror films but if you want that "good ending"; You have to memorize the stages and haul Rick's ass to the end of each one.
+Pimp Master Broda (Voice Trolling) Its like Abes odyssey, When i was younger, I rented the game, didnt know what it was all about, being impatient i didnt read the manual, it wasnt until half way through the game that i realized i was supposed to be saving the green bastards..... Fun though....
Hey friend do you mind elaborate on the ending. From the video it seemed you get a cut scene right when time hits zero. Then you can keep playing until next stage. How does it affect the game ending if on some stage you make the time and on some you don't. Or if you don't make it for any of the stages. Are there differences?
Would love to see you guys play night trap on James and Mike Mondays!!!! Be perfect October, unless you guys have them pre-recorded for the whole month already.
For certain genres I prefer Genesis. As much as I love Turtles in Time, the Streets of Rage series comes out on top for me. And the 6 button controller made it more ideal for fighting games.
I personally think the Sega Genesis was the master of scrolling beat em ups. I loved golden axe, streets of rage and a few others. The Nintendo was the master of the RPGs for sure. Each console holds a special place in my heart. I think both were power houses of it's time. Constantly trying to one up each other and both coming about with memorable games.
Doing the spin kick in this game, helps a lot. Learning the special moves allows you to beat the enemies faster and thus having more time on the clock.
I'm hyped for the AVGN Halloween episode. I predict 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' is finally going to be defeated. I want to see co-op for Zombies Ate My Neighbors or A Nightmare on Elm Street.
+luffy11234 re-re-revisited. I mean, they did have a breakthrough when they had the group play on it, they discovered how to dodge the bomb. I just wanna see him beat it!
Jonathan the new one is not bad. Not great but i had alot of laughs with it but the fact that you can unlock the okd ones made it worth every penny to me
This game is awesome, if you want a really challenge play the game in "game master" difficulty and try to beat all stage in time to get the best ending.
Watching these two slowly warm up to this fantastic classic is a real pleasure. Splatterhouse 3 deserves a very specific category; something slightly more than just a horror game. James & Mike go from confused, to dissatisfied, to amused, and slowly they find themselves sitting right behind the gore-slick mask of Rick. Just think, IGN would have published their review after the opening stage. Great video . . .
I'm so "glad" you guys made it to this Splatterhouse. this was the only one i played as a kid and i remember it giving me the creeps like no other (specifically the genre and music). this is still a classic in my eyes
The time limit isn't for yourself, it's for the victims of the monsters. Since you didn't make it to Jennifer in time, you can see the monster feasting upon her corpse in the background before you fight him.
Maybe you know this but the timer was to get diferent endings such as good or bad,the music of this game is fantastic, the intro makes me wanna cry of how epic it is.
There is no "original" thing. There's "The Thing from Another World". However, due to the dumb prequel, we actually do need to differentiate between the good movie and the bad movie. Actually, the 1982 film is far more accurate to the novella it was based on ("Who Goes There?") than "The Thing From Another World".
Just a few things you guys missed, you actually have the map from the beginning, you can only access it from pause after you clear a room, the book you picked up is a secret item (used to activate something else) you have an open map because there are secret pathways, bonus items and weapons, and other useful secrets, however, too much exploration takes up too much time, and depending on how quickly you make it to each boss determines whether the family member related to that level lives or dies (the main mission is to save everyone in the mansion)
You guys have no idea how deep this game gets. There are hidden stages and special moves, it's incredible and super violent. Protip, when you transform, press < > < B.
If you didn't already find out, you don't fight the real true end boss unless you beat each level in the fastest time. I did it once back in 90's. Great game.
One of my favorite on the genesis at 90's, and I've found at that time the 1º Splatterhouse game on genesis too, and one on NES. Nice memories. Thank you guys.
+SupaNintendoGirl Wait till you see *Legion* or *Beelzebub* (from _Castlevania: Symphony of the Night_); or the *Forgotten One* (from _Castlevania: Lament of Innocence_)! Maggots galore fosho, let-me-tell-ya! 'XS
forward, backward, forward and punch, Rick will kick everything around him, it does not drain life nor special, without it it's hard to make stuff in time to see the true ending. There is also one special item each stage, if you collect them and get to the boss in time an alternate ending is unlocked.
It was either SNES or Sega and I chose Sega because my cousins said it was more grown up. Snes has some great games I can't deny that, but I didn't own one till way late.
Next to violent and gory games like Mortal Kombat, Splatterhouse and Doom, it's strange that a goofy game like Night Trap was even a factor in the creation of the ESRB.
Why does it have to become a MD/Genesis vs SNES all the time. The genesis was a great machine. There are so many good games. Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force if you want RPG's. Truxton and Darwin if you want shooters. Aladdin and Sonic if you want platforms. As much as I love the MD/Genesis I respect the SNES. Stop comparing and enjoy both.
When you're in Mutant Rick form you can do a special move where you shoot out tentacles or something from your body in all directions. It's a bit tricky to pull off though and I can't remember the exact button combination.
James listed off a ton of great SNES RPGs - it'd be cool to see you look into some Genesis RPGs - Shining Force, Phantasy Star, and especially Beyond Oasis.
Here's a horror movie reference that's easy to miss. The couple is named Rick and Jennifer in this series. In "Silent Night Deadly Night 2" that couple is also named Rick and Jennifer. "Silent Night Deadly Night 2" came out a year (or possibly less) before the original Splatterhouse.
2 years before my inocence was completely destroyed with Mortal Kombat my ideal hero was already Rick from Splatterhouse. Splattering monster faces with a monster :') Such good memorys
You know it is funny to me everybody this is Sega Genesis but if they've ever play Shining Force or fancy store to they are so epic that people end up quitting before they finish it that is a good game if you get so frustrated that you want to play more but you have to take a day or two of a break Sega Genesis what more do I say
Just fyi you DO get the map in the begining and the timer is because depending on if you finish before or after it ends depends on what the next scene will be
The Splatterhouse videos may be my favorite continuation videos of James and Mike Mondays. From James saying "I was like duh duhhhh duhhhh," To Mike saying "Can't get enough of that sugar criiiissspp,"
to be honest, I think is a bit unfair to compare those 'epic' snes rpgs (final fantasy III, legend of zelda, chrono trigger) with the genesis games, because since the beginning the premise of the genesis was to be an action console, you know, with blast processing and stuff. So they never got into rpg slow-typeof games. Its not like they couldn't do games like that. Its just they didnt want to, they thought people who want to buy the genesis want to play fast super action games. Just my opinion. Sorry if english is broken.
+Johns-Santos is it really necessary to put a genesis rpg list here... shining force, phantasy star,vermilion,ect... (real rpg's btw not like your titels that appart from FF are action "rpg's"...)
+juanbarlos most of these titles already had a nes version. the fanbase was already build. Genesis game didnt. And yet people compare than. So with that I can call the genesis a truly rival even with less?
Imo when it comes to consoles Streets of Rage 2 is DEFINITELY better than Final Fight. But the arcade version of FF makes it pretty much even for me. SoR2 has waaay better music no doubt, but the appeal of being to actually throw dudes and piledriver their shit in on command is wicked! Stuff like that. FF also has bonus stages. "Oh, my god/car!"
Old comment reply but I have to disagree. Final fight 3 is much better. Perfect hit detection, special moves and alternate paths instead of just being linear. The ninja warriors again was a pretty good one too.
This was my favorite game, you get 3 different endings depending on how well you did. Good ending means you save your wife, son and kill the final boss. But you guys won't get anywhere without Right > Left > Right > Kick that's the roundhouse. Clears the screen and does a ton of damage.
People here saying you can't play Super Metroid or Link to the Past on Genesis Well, that might be true, but you can't play Dynamite Headdy or Streets of Rage 2 on SNES
+Vivian Sutton (vividBloodsucker) For most SNES games there is an equivalent on the Genesis. For Link to the Past you've got Crusader of Centy. For Secret of Mana, you've got Beyond Oasis, etc.
Hey guys. Before talking shit about game could you at least open the fucking manual. (You have the map right from begining, timer only affects the ending and secret stages). Also there is a special move (forward, backward, forward + B). Good video anyway.
+mrmong Or Ranger X, Gunstar Heroes, Beyond Oasis, Comix Zone, Chakan, Toe Jam & Earl, Kid Chamelon, Landstalker, and Contra Hard Corps. All underrated gems..
I think that the Genesis also have games that doesn't have an equivalent on the SNES. Shining Force, Splatterhouse ofc, Gunstar Hero, Comix zone etc. Good video guys!
Splatterhouse 3 is the shit, the intro is amazing, multiple endings, really creepy horrors to fight, and a finale plot twist that you two are not aware of... this game may not be too hard to win without time concerns, but it is ungodly in difficulty to finish the game within the time limit.
Splatterhouse 3 is probably the only legitimately scary game on the Genesis. Playing it alone in a dark room is infinitely scarier than most modern horror games today.
Crusader of Centy is kind of different. It's a little too, I don't know, cartoony and tame? I like it but Landstalker is definitely a better example of Genesis' Zelda.
+Ryan Beers probably isnt all that available, and he did a game before that, he played Silver Surfer and finished it, but it wasnt labeled as Bootsy Beats, his segment is new, so please exercise some patience.
Radeo a very narrow number, but what's impressive is the ones he's dominated, Battletoads? Silver Surfer? that's like 2 of the hardest NES games in the whole library, Bootsy is a gaming masochist... o.o
Radeo that i cant disagree with at all, that is very true, hence why i dont really "Complete" games that often, only games i love a lot, like Streets of Rage 2.
It kind of annoys me that both of the guys generalize their memories of the super nintendo. The titles james counts are great, but so was Phantasy Star IV, so was the Shining Force Series, so was Landstalker and Soleil for instance. Maybe they haven't played these games but it kinda bugs me, that they always act like the Genesis/Mega Drive hasn't had real Gems like ALTTP or Chrono Trigger. It did and it's stupid to try to "win" the console wars over 25 years later. As grown men they should know better...
Why in every video about genesis games you make comparisons of "how better SNES was over Genesis". You could just not play Genesis anymore. Worst part of the videos. (n)
I love the series, but you guys love to fanboy the snes. Every video where there's a genesis game involved you immediately tread back too oh you can't compete against metroid. or link to the past. popularity is subjective but you spew shit like it's written in a book of. asinine facts.
I think I read somewhere that the sales of the Genesis and SNES were the closest of any two rival consoles. For the SNES to just blow the Genesis away, there sure were a lot of Genesises sold.
+chitlitlah sales numbers and statistics can prove ultimately whose pocket ended up fatter. favoring one console over the other and proclaiming the things they do is subjective opinion. I'm merely stating they're biased and swing towards the snes side of the 16bit nut sack.
+chitlitlah the Genesis was outsold by the SNES by a decent margin but it did pretty well too. I think both systems have their positive angles, obviously the SNES has possibly the more legendary games simply because of its predominant RPG and Platforming/Adventure titles but the Genesis has probably the best roster of fighting games of any console ever imo so that's definitely something
Full motion video does exist on the Genesis. In 2 games Red Zone which looks amazing, but in monochrome. Then we have Sonic 3D Blast which has a FMV intro but it runs at something around 8 FPS.
Cool video and all but once again, your silly Nintendo fanboyism just shows how ignorant and closed-minded you guys are about the Genesis. "No games like Zelda on the Genesis" What is -Beyond Oasis -Crusader of Centy -Landstalker -Wonder Boy series -King Colossus Not to mention the pretentious implying that RPGs are "better" per se than action games.
Your map is available at all times when enemies are cleared of the room. And you can do a super attack in both forms by pushing forward back forward bc at once.
well in splatterhouse 2 you can beat the ENTIRE game by mastering and exclusively using the jumping slide click along the ground. nothing will ever hit you and you kill things thrice as fast. splatterhouse 3 the secret is memorize the map, it never changes, and when you get full power meter you can transform into the hulk and use a special attack that hits full screen over and over.
aiiiiiiiiiiit listen! I grew up on this jam! my bro bought it in the US after we had the second one as a rental sometime before. god knows I'm super thankful to have been a kid in the 90's.
