Splendid Speakers Spoiled by Stupid Silence

I missed the first 3 seconds of one dank meme too many, and this video had to be made.
Music used: Holomorphic by David Randall • Holomorphic
Speakers used: Creative Gigaworks T40 Series II. The speaker part's fine, it's just the rest of it that's annoying.

Making power-saving things to waste more energy in a form of a human work is pure evil art. I respect that
@MJ-uk6lu
@MJ-uk6lu 3 года назад
This is exactly what CPU C (except C1 state, which is hidden in Windows and cannot be changed by user easily and you shouldn't disable it either as it saves a ton of power for no noticeable sluggishness) states are. Making you CPU sluggish for next to none savings. On top of that, they can reduce SSD 4K read and write performance by up to 70%. If you don't build your computer yourself,l those C states could be enable by OEM and there's not much that you can do about that. And the reason why I'm mad is that they save fractions of watt only. Meanwhile, something like Intel EIST or Speedshift saves at least 8-10 watts. Useless feature.

I don't mind the few seconds it takes to turn the speaker on. What I mind is that if the speakers aren't loud enough they go into this power saving mode automatically. And "loud enough" is just about the level I want to have my speakers on, so often if I listen to something a bit quieter (like when there is only ambient sounds in game and no other else) the speakers turn off. To turn them back on I either have to turn on the volume much higher and then back down or play music from spotify and then wait for few seconds wondering if the thing I played was loud enough for the speakers to turn on. And that is the single most annoying thing about it.
@DaneZZil

Damn, my headphones also do that, I thought that my pc was having problems with playing sounds but now I know what the problem really is.
@niter43
@niter43 3 года назад
I'm sure they're not doing because of that. Wired headphones are fully passive and if no sound is coming out, then there's no signal to start with -- that's the source issue. If they're wireless, then they do that for power saving, but not for the sake of regulations, but because it's a battery-powered device and manufacturer/designer wanted to increase stand-by time if user forgot to turn them off.

Hmmm... How many watts does it take when in idle with the sound on (so no wait) and how much watts does it take when the speaker is its sleep mode? Edit: I checked this on my own speakers. Whilest playing music it's 3.2 Watts, with a sligthly illuminated lcd. On idle (on, but no music playing) it's still 3.2 watts and if i put it in standby mode (not the same as in the video, but probably similar in power consumption 1.4 Watts. That's a 64% reduction in power usage. Making this a good powersaving feature, it only sucks that it takes three seconds to boot back up.

@Redmongames
@Redmongames 3 года назад
@@deneb_tm That's true, but if I would compare these results to my big boi speakers, it's 20 ~ 30 watts active average around 25 I guess, idle 19.5 watts and standby of 1.7 watts. That would be a 91% reduction in power usage. Looking at this is quite logical that you would want a sleep mode build into your electronics if you're not using them. This could safe a lot of power and I don't know how long that law has existed, but I'm certain that they are able to build speakers in a couple of years that can wake up within miliseconds instead of seconds. However to get companys to make this tech, they must have a reason to make it and in this case it's a ruling from the EU.

I have the T20 series (almost the same in many regards) and the fix you mentioned wouldn't work, since they only wake up after sounds that are at least somewhat loud. Play a song that has very quiet start and the speakers won't turn on until the song gets louder. At least it doesn't take 3 seconds, but around 1 second. They do have good sound, but around 130Hz they vibrate or oscillate or something, which causes other frequencies to be quieter. There is a particular song I like which I can't enjoy with the speakers just because of this. Overall they're fine, worth the money, I have them for more than 3 years and they are still fine.

My JBL One does this too but at least it's not set to sleep after 10mins so I'm not bothered by it. And the single volume dial is cool too. I almost never turn it off.

Have had mine for over 6 years now, cannot recommend them enough as a pair of PC speakers. I've never felt like I had to upgrade them and even used them for some parties I've held. Not had the auto-turn off ever be a feature on mine though, maybe they added it to a revised version?

2:45 omg i get this too and thought it was just me... even after some ad read mid video that ive skipped over, i have to go back till 2 seconds prior to the ad read being over just so i know i havent missed even a single frame of the actual video. I know that i havent really missed anything but still, i have to go back to just before the end of that ad read just so i can see a few frames of nothing. Im not crazy enough to stay during the entirety of end cards of a video, although i will stay till i see them pop up.

JFYI: Shower dials and hand washing dials are connected to a cold and hot water source. Booth sources have a screw controlling how much water can flow trought, using that screws you can adjust your shower dial to be generally hotter or cooler. No problem.

I agree that this is indeed very stupid. And honestly, I was just in the market for new speakers so... thank you Philip for telling me to not get these speakers. Also I've had a simliar "sleep" issue with my HDMI out from the monitor where the monitor wouldn't play anything if it's too quiet, so what I ended up doing is this: I played a very high frequency sound that I could not hear through my headphones, so the other quieter stuff would still have audio, because the monitor would still be transfering audio, it's just that I could not hear it. Trust me, having no audio when things are quiet actually ruined a few CS and Valorant rounds for me.

As a fellow T40 Series II owner, I fully understand your frustration on the stupid sleep function. My old Inspire T5900 didn't have this feature.

I've been using the same Logitech speakers that were included with parents old OEM machine in 2006. It's lovely to have timeless hardware.

same with jbl flip4, impossible to skype over that thing because of this stupid feature. I went as far as to modify the circuit board to prevent this stupid sleeping behavior.

"long enough to doubt yourself" That's the absolute worst part of this issue, of my BT headphones, of home automation microphones: lack of immediate feedback. Is it working as intended, or am I losing my mind? Find out in 3 seconds!

This is why I use extremely old hardware whereever it's not actually computing or displaying something. Analog hardware from a time long forgotten, where the knobs were connected to a variable resistor, not a circuit board. Of course they are heavy. Of course they are this weird yellowy white plastic. But they work. And they will probably do so for the rest of my life.

My man, count your blessings, my pair would make a "pop" sound every 20 - 30 seconds when they were in standby, it used to drive me nuts. Gave them to my brother a while back, then bought speakers from Edifier but... it just wasn't the same. Then I bought Genius, Edifier again, even tried Sony heaphones but nothing would give me the same quality.... so I bought new Gigaworks T40s and I'm happy to say that the new ones don't pop. And while the standby is still annoying, for me it's worth it because of the excellent audio quality.
