Kids are going to try and remember this and then zone out in the middle of the road trying to remember what the next letter stood for. Don't splink, splink and you're dead!

Many moons ago someone painted the word Splink onto the wooden panelling above the windows of the assembly hall of the Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham...it was "erased" fairly promptly...but almost 40 years later, the residue can still be seen in some photos of the school on GoogleEarth/Maps

He could read out a phonebook and I'd be enchanted.

Even now as a grown-up I can't remember what splink means after having just watched this. Jon Pertwee was especially cool presenting Whodunnit at this time. Open shirt, big medallion round the neck and even smoking a cigarette! Hard to imagine now.

Why do they never advertise The Green Cross Code anymore? It's very important for children to learn it.

Not sure when this was filmed, but when I learned the Green Cross Code about 1970 it was much simpler. Look left, look right, look left again. For a direction neutral version "Look for traffic in the near lane, look for traffic in the far lane, look for traffic in the near lane again" -- Its been 40 years & I still remember this simpler version of the Green Cross Code :)

I'm pretty sure I got called "splink" at school.

While the kids were trying to remember what the letters in splink meant they were not looking at the traffic so many died or were injured. Many "no win no fee" claims ensued, much sadness.

TVTropes brought me here. The page was talking about how ridiculous the acronym was, and I agree. Why not just, say, SLAW (Stop, Look, And Walk)? That took me all of 30 seconds to think of.
