Pea and Ham soup, my favourite. Here in Australia we don't see gammon so much in the supermarket but in the winter we have bacon bones or a ham hock and I make our pea and ham soup with these. Also I use the yellow split peas but I suppose there isn't much difference. Now I'm hungry for pea and ham soup and soda bread. Enjoyed this video.
Another Aussie here and oh yup, ham hocks from the butcher or even better (to me for some reason) those frozen leftover ham bones from the Christmas leg of ham. Yum!
@@tanialane1267How are you ? Good to meet you. I don’t think I actually know what Gammon is. We are in the south coast of NSW and I grew up in Canberra I don’t think I have seen it here, have you? Not to worry, ham bone is pretty good either way. I think allot of the allure of dishes like these are because they are hard wired in our brains to feed our bellies and comfort our minds so if our mothers did it, it’s golden. Oh and it would be lovely to have some after Christmas Ham but never any left at our place. I’d have to hide it from my lot to keep it. Ha ha I’m not that brave😊
when i was 13 me and my brother used to have swimming lessons and it was a thursday after school we had to get a bus so in winter my wonderful nana made this soup to warm us up when we got home so so wonderful xxxthat was 44 years ago time flys xxx
This looks delicious, I’ll be having a go tommorow. You do your onion your own way, everyone does it differently. 😊Thank you very much for showing us x
Thank you. I love and appreciate your cooking, tips and videos so much and truly hope you don't change no matter how popular your channel gets. My only suggestion (or request, depending on how you look at it) would be that an ingredients list (and rough number of servings) was added to the description to make it easier for me to prepare for and then follow your recipes. Again, truly thank you for being exactly who you are! ☺️
Yes i agree, you're a no nonsense home cook. No going into the forest foraging looking for nettle leaves at 7am As soon as i hear the word foraging from a tv chef, I turn off. Such a delight to watch and hear an unpretentious lady cook, true to her family and areas roots. Howay the lads. Im gannen yem noo.
My mam used to buy a pigs head to make Brawn, my dads favourite. We had Carlins on Carlin Sunday. Lots of vinegar and salt on. She used to ask the butcher to chop the sheeps head for the brains. They were delicious on toast.
That looked yummy. If you dont have any buttermilk, add to 250ml of whole or semi-skimmed milk,1 tbspn of vinegar or lemon juice, leave to stand for 10 mins, stir and use ,adjust amount as required.
Just a handy hint - if you need buttermilk for a recipe but don’t have any available, just add a tablespoon of lemon juice to regular milk and wait 10-20 mins, and hey presto…buttermilk substitute. I’ve used it many times, works a treat. Thank you for your lovely cooking ideas. 😊
Made this soup for friends weeks ago everyone raved about it my soda bread also turned out well got everything in and i am going to make it tomorrow for a friend who is just out of hospital i am sure it will be much appreciated keep the videos coming Mary i love them
That's a lovely tea. I've decided to put all my powders like bicarb and baking powder into labelled jars as I find those containers they come in so annoyingly difficult to open. I think I must be losing it in my old age 😂🤣.
Another great vid from you, thanks. Pea & ham soup is my fave, I used to make it myself but living on your own there's always too much so the other day I bought some from a bakery near me, it was like a huge tub of mushy peas, the spoon could stand up in it! lol I think it was getting to the end of service and they'd just scraped the dregs into the cup. That went in the bin! Yours looks just like my mum used to make, absolutely lovely and the bread too Love your videos
Both my mum and Nana used to make pea & ham soup using two pigs trotters which you cannot seem to get these days. It was always served with fresh rolls, truly awesome and so filling.
That soup looks delicious 👍 I add a few potatoes when I make , soda bread is delicious we love it and so easy to make , I usually do half white half wholewheat flour and I’ve added all sorts to it including dates and walnuts , lovely tasty meal there 👍 nice one 👏 yeh a few sayings about the cross , letting out the fairies to protect the house from evil is another one 🤣 love the ikea spoon
Hello from Miami! Looks great and tasty. My dad makes it the same way minus the pressure cooker. Thanks for sharing. The bread looks delicious. I bet Devine toasted with a knob of butter. 😊 Thanks for teaching us.

Hello Mand yogourt is great for making soda bread or sour milk is great too. I will give this soup a go, it was a fav growing up, real grub.😃👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼don't forget to let the fairies out😁
Tesco sell buttermilk usually. Also if tesco sell Polish food in your area, there is a very well priced Buttermilk from Poland. When I was a bairn in Durham City, my mam used to make Baking Powder scones. Had to be eaten same day. My dad loved them with anything savoury.
Never had split peas but have made Great Northern Beans (or navy beans) with ham hocks. Served with corn bread and if I have it Chow Chow (relish). Delicious. When I married my husband he had never had beans and cornbread But I soon converted him😂😂😂😂 Best kitchen tool is your hands.
I have Butternu Squash and Pepper Soup on today. We do a Soup Sunday and Thursdays however yesterday wasxmy Birthday so had a day off. You really cant beat honemade soup i now do mine in Preasure Cooker but still Roast or Sauté Veg first. My daughter loves my Fridge and Pantry Soup her husband took ages to understand those Soups i could never make same again as literally what ever was looking sad in Fridge/Pantry got put in Soup Pot...he now loves them as well 😊
Just woke up to find a video. What a pleasant way to start my day drinking coffee and watching you cook. I think I’ll try to make soda bread looks like it’s easy enough for me!
I was going to ask you where you got your lovely chunky spoon from cos I watched the spaghetti bolognese before this one, I shall be going to ikea tomorrow.
I haven't had a good pea soup for decades, this recipe makes me want to stop just before you add the other veggies because at that point it looks delicious! As for you going to Ikea for more of those wooden spoons, better not unless you want Ian to swap from buses to offering rowing trips up and down the Tyne! LOL
I love the old school dinner's (every pun intended 😂) it's all about nostalgia and real food for me .. regardless if it's "tomadoe/tomatoe .. podadoe/potatoe .. green pea/yellow pea .. let's call the whole thing off 😂😂😂 .. what I'm saying in a obviously "NOT" long winded way .. is horses for courses .. 😂 peace
I always use a ham hock to make stock for soups, I use 2 tins of whole plum tomatoes mixed with the stock and the cubed meat from the cooked ham hock, simmer for 30 minutes, then blitz with a hand blender, gives you a nice thick Tomato soup , I serve it with toasted slices of French bread piled high with grated cheese then melted under the grill, makes a good combo
Thank you for sharing, looks delicious. If you need buttermilk, I saw this on a cook programme. Use 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to 240ml of whole milk. Could I ask what salt you use only it doesn't look white on screen, is it a seasoning salt? Think I'll make some soda bread 👍👍
I have made it its the best pea sou i have EVER made a little time consuming but well worth it if you make any other soups please let me know didn't make the soda bread because i cant eat bread give your cat a love from me xxxB
As you probably know we can’t get gammon, here the ham is precooked, and is wet,and sweet, and I never eat it,they do make a dry cured ham in the South, but you need to order online, and you get the whole leg,you can get ham hocks, but there is absolutely no meat on them,so when I make pea soup,I use smoked Turkey legs, and I find those very good, and meaty. How about doing a soup on a regular basis, that way you could have a lighter meal, and I think a lot of people don’t really know how to make soups.I bought whole-wheat flour to make soda bread, and it’s been in the cabinet for ages,I should use it.😊
