Fishing has taught me to do the simple things now, because it makes life less complicated later. I'm still learning that. As fishermen, I think we're all reminded of it every day.
My uncle was my mentor. I noticed that focus and determination were strong traits in him, and I did my best to imitate. I also learned his strategies for carrying and storing fishing gear. One of the best of those, but perhaps the least commonly known, is what I call splitting the rod.
Pay with your time -- now or late. Try this simple trick for splitting the rod in two, for easy transport through the woods or over the highways.
Since 2014, with over 800 stories, tips, commentary and podcasts and videos, Troutbitten is a free resource for all anglers.

Your production quality is outstanding. I would love to see a video of you fishing and demonstrating what a perfect drift looks like to you. Listening and reading your stuff has been a tremendous help, thank you.

Hi Chad. Thanks very much. Much credit to Wilds Media for this video and some of the others. I understand your desire for what I call the "fish along" video format. That's a pretty common way to do it for a fishing channel. And I'll get to it. I promise. I don't want to say coming soon, because I have a lot of work to do to get there, but it's in the works. Thanks again for the support.

I do the same thing but instead of carrying around a bunch of hair ties, I just wrap either the fly line or my leader back around both sections of rod and then hook it onto one of the guides. Make sure your drag is tight enough that it won't come loose and you're good to go.

Definitely going to use this technique for storing rods at home rigged up. No more waiting game of "when" will I break a rod. Thanks for the great content, all your vids are top notch and super informative. Not to mention the production quality is top notch, really great work by the entire team. Thank you!

Insane game changer. Thank you so much for all the golden wisdom. I started using these d'addario guitar cable ties I already had so I can tether them with one hand. Also those bungee ball cords. Really useful!!

This has been working great for me. Thanks for the video. I found twist ties to be super versatile tool for holding rods together, securing tag fly, etc. basically mixed your method with George Daniel’s “twist tie” video.

I break my rod the same way Dom...works great. I also keep two 1/2" strips of old road bike inner tube on the butt end of the rod. They are tight and out of the way and are perfect to hold the overlapped ends of the rod together

Hi David. Thanks for asking. It's a Smith Creek Rod Rack. That information and links for buying are in the companion article, linked in the video description. And in the companion article there are links to other important articles. You'll find that I'm pretty thorough about things, and I won't leave viewers/readers hanging much. The info you seek is usually linked. Thanks again.

Hey Dom, do you do the same thing when you have a mono leader attached? Which would mean that the line would not be showing.
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Год назад
Yes, I do it with a Mono Rig too. All setups.
@daveramirez1469
@daveramirez1469 Год назад
Does tension on the guides not kink the leader when you do this? Or is that just the tradeoff for the convenience?
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Год назад
Good question. It certainly can create a kink, depending on how tight you make everything. However, I just stretch the kink out. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me, because I stretch all leaders and lines before use anyway.

Trying this pulls the fly line loop into the Rod guides which really doesn’t work well because the fly line loop to leader gets hung up on every guide. Can’t tell from the video how long your leader is -can you address this? Really would like this to work!
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten 4 месяца назад
Respectfully, if your loop is getting hung up like that, then there's something wrong with your connection. Any good fly line to leader connection should NOT hang up like that. Loop to loop is the standard, and it will pass through fine if done properly. But it's not the best choice, even if it is the industry standard. Here's a better choice. troutbitten.com/2019/03/06/loop-to-loop-is-bad-try-attaching-your-leader-to-the-fly-line-this-way/ Again, though, and good, clean collection will be fine while splitting the rod. We do this ALL the time. Cheers.
@dfoster9007
@dfoster9007 4 месяца назад
Oh wow, never seen anybody do that. Tried it now. It definitely does work much better. Tying that clinch knot with the thick butt end of the leader is a little concerning but it seems to be holding. So we all have been running the fly line around the reel and back up to an eye to keep all the leader out of rod-which also can facilitate releasing the fly by tapping the rod- I notice with this approach you secure the fly to the hook at the rod base. In your video, I would definitely talk about the importance of where the left hand is placed- important that it is above the first separation point and that you keep tension on the tippet so the fly doesn’t come off. Its also easy to get the line twisted at the rod tip. I think with practice this will become second nature as you say! Still a little concerned with replacing the bullet proof loop to loop with another knot but the advantage is real. Thanks for the help!
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten 4 месяца назад
@@dfoster9007 I don't think loop to loop is bulletproof at all. I think it's a lousy solution.. It makes leader changes much harder. It rarely releases the way it should. It's clunky in the guides, and it can rip up the loop over time. It surprises me that the loop to loop is still thought to be the industry standard. Can't beat that Clinch. If you think it'll slip, use a Uni Knot. Cheers.

Does anyone make a rod case that it would fit into taken apart? It would be super handy, id keep my rod split like that all the time. Its a good 10 minutes rigging up that i could be fishing! Lol
