In the end, before she left, it felt like she was a kid who didn’t quite understand what was going on, but trusted her parents(the choir) enough to go through with it even though she was scared.
the birthday party scene has m3 sobbing immediately. “how do you know it’s my birthday?” “how do we know it’s not your birthday?” wailing rn. actually just inconsolable
No one's talking about how sweet it was of Ocean to realize that they can't use a name for the happy birthday song and creates a new one to avoid upsetting Penny/Jane.
Ocean is so so awful, but I love her because that moment showed how kind-hearted she is capable of being, and could have been if she'd lived to grow more. I love Ocean for that moment.
I like to think that when Penny died, she came back to her friends, her fellow members of the choir, the ones who gave up the chance to continue their lives so she could have her own, now knowing who she is. Penny Lamb, with the greenest eyes
Some people interpret the ending with her singing as her coming to them when she died of age. I personally headcanon that the choir was trapped in this limbo-state of Uranium and when she passed, she came back for them so they could have an afterlife with her.
...I want to imagine Penny Lamb named her daughter Savannah and sang her their birthday song. Like...Her daughter hit her first birthday and everyone started singing the traditional one and baby Savannah started crying because people are A Lot Sometimes. So Penny scoops her daughter up and holds her close and hums for a bit before managing to pull the lyrics out of somewhere. She doesn't remember where she heard it, not really, but...But it makes her happy and want to cry, all at once. So she shares it with her daughter. Her son. Everyone she loves. Her family stops singing the traditional one and uses The New Birthday Song.
Man i have this little headcanon about that every year is pennys birthday in her new life she can see the choir in dreams singing the new birthday song for her, she dosent know who they are but she feels them familiar
I usually don't get too invested in character relationships in musicals, since they don't have much interaction, but the short friendship between Ricky and Jane has my whole heart. The comforting after Birthday Song. The way he gives her what she wants most, a name and a new identity, even though it's a name he's been saving for something special. The way she reaches out to him at 4:32 because she doesn't know what's happening and needs someone to explain it like how Ricky's been explaining everything to her. And even before they passed, they sat next to each other on the rollercoaster, so Ricky might've quite literally been the person Jane was closest to before she died (after all, she didn't have any other friends). I'm reading into shit too much but these two were a tragedy waiting to happen and I can't look away.
When Ocean wonders whether Jane will try to resurrect her headless doll, Ricky is behind the two and smiles at Jane. It stands out because everyone else in the choir is still unnerved by her at that point.
@@AlashiaTuol I know it's a sort-of pseudoscience, but Ricky's MBTI type is apparently INFP like me. We tend to be very nonjudgemental and accepting of others, especially those most people might find weird. So along with the reasoning of him having been next to her on the coaster, it does make sense that he would be one of the first of the choir to be more accepting of her.
@@ladielydkyd1281 They also were next to each other when performing that day - if you trust the newspaper and video clips at the beginning. Jane's face is always obscured but she's on Ricky's right while the choir is performing on the bandstand (you can see the skirt of a third grey girl's uniform) and on his left in the coaster cart (you see her when they have that shot of that cart from behind).
Jane Doe is like a small child who is lost and confused but trusts people around her (meaning the choior and especially Ricky 'the guy who gave her the name Savannah' and Ocean) she is just so innocent, she is my favorite chaaracter
Cried irl when after The Ballad Of Jane doe they just surround her and comfort her with a little birthday celebration. Poor Jane. She seemed happy as Penny, though.
Makes me think that may have been the position she was in when she died holding her doll the only comfort she had the only remnant of her past life before she was forgotten
After reading the Legoland script there’s times penny came out. In one production I’ve seen gave Jane French braids which penny is described to have. She also talks about lions mating habits, which Penny, as an aspiring animal conservationist would know

The fair got shut down after the accident. The whole reason for the story is Karnak is about to die because he’s been left to rot with all the other carnival stuff.
@@arolurker3511there is a possibility of a new amusement park being built where it once stood. While it probably (definitely) won't have The Cyclone or Karnak, there would probably be little memorials to the choir. The accident _was_ mainstream enough to get into at least three papers. Saved your headcanon most-definitely-not-dark-reunion
I see where people are coming from with this headcanon but if that were so, why would Ricky sing about being a Space-Age Bachelor Man with that much passion
I like to think that penny lamb goes to her friends graves on their birthdays and winds the birthday sound to them, she misses them (also every time she does it at least two of her friends cry)
Does ANYONE know what instrument(s) are playing during Karnak's introduction for Jane, where she pulls the lever twice, (1:41 - 1:52)? Because I am in love with whatever it is. Same with whatever plays in Ricky's one.
