Happy 25th anniversary, SpongeBob SquarePants! Though we all know that the show’s first airing on Nickelodeon took place on May 1, 1999, that broadcast was actually a PREVIEW; the series wouldn’t OFFICIALLY premiere on Nickelodeon until July 17 of the same year. Nickelodeon also uses the July 17 date whenever they celebrate SpongeBob’s anniversary, hence my decision to use July 17, 2024 as the day I myself honor the occasion. This series sparked my eternal love for animation, and I am forever grateful for that. Rest in peace: Stephen Hillenburg - your work will always be cherished by me and billions of others all around the world for many, many years to come.
In honor of this seaworthy occasion, here’s a video showcasing the standalone DVD release of the season that started it all. The very first proper season set of a Nickelodeon series, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Complete 1st Season includes all 20 episodes from the yellow sea fellow’s debut season on the air. Well, actually, 19-and-a-half of season 1’s 20 episodes: due to licensing issues regarding Tiny Tim’s “Livin’ in the Sunlight, Lovin’ in the Moonlight”, used prominently during that episode’s climax, the show’s pilot “Help Wanted” was left off this box set. However, once the music licensing was finally cleared for home video, it would later be included as a bonus feature on The Complete 3rd Season in 2005, as well as at the start of the series like how it was always meant to be viewed on The First 100 Episodes in 2009.
I own all 13 seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants that have been released on DVD so far (though I still need to get seasons 4 and 5 on DVD as their respective complete sets: I own them alongside seasons 1-3 via The First 100 Episodes, but I also own seasons 1-3 of SpongeBob on DVD individually, due to the standalone DVD sets for seasons 1-5 containing different special features from the extras included on The First 100 Episodes), and I definitely want to cover all those season sets in future videos. For this celebration of SpongeBob’s 25th anniversary, however, I’m just covering the individual DVD release of season 1, so my SpongeBob DVD overviews don’t suffer the same fate as my DVD overviews for Disney television shows (also originally intended to commemorate a milestone date).
