Spookslot Haunted House like you've never seen it before - Walk-through - Efteling Reaction! 

Spookslot was the first real attraction of the Efteling after the fairy tale forest. It was build in 1978 and this year closed after 44 years of operation. Most mechanics used where still original from the opening. Because the older technics and the building was falling apart they decided to close the ride. At the moment the demolition has started to make place for Spookslot V2.0 named "Dance macabre" after the music which they are going to use again. In the new version of the ride the audience take place in church bench in the middle of the show and the decors are build around it. The benches are also gonna move like a simulator as Star Tours in the Disney Parks. Most children from the age of 8 years where going in this. I grew up myself with this ride so I have some mixed feelings about the demolition.

A new version of the "Spookslot" will be build on the same spot in a new themed area based on the attraction. It will be called "Danse Macabre" (dance of the dead). In 2024 it will be ready.

Saw it first when I was 10 years old. Been my favourite attraction next to the Fairytale forest ever since. Said goodbye to it august 2022. So did my children (start at 10 , said goodbye this year) The told story wasnt part of it when i was young, it came later. It was never really scary, just a bit spooky. Kate bush was part of the opening in 1980, she had her own gravestone in the cemetery. The music special is available on youtube. You'll see her singing and dancing though the castle (and other parts of efteling) The efteling channel also recently released a backstage clip of spookslot with the guys that made it 40 years ago. Takes a bit of the magic away, but also shows the simplicity and craftsmanship of the show. (And adds some new magic when you see them reminisce)❤👍

I must have been around 3 years old. It's one of those things that stay with you for your entire life. I might have been 4 but surely not older than that. My little brother was just a baby. In his little carriage. My whole family took us to the Efteling. I remember the little trains you had to bike and the swimming pool (long gone). But in my mind there was nothing so terrifying as Het Spookslot. My father was my gardian during this event. I remember him laughing and making fun of the whole show, encouraging to watch it. I did. Till up to this day, I am haunted by these memories when the moon finds itself to be unseen and the tide is high during an autumn storm. This year new moon with storm tide will fall again with november 30th. It's the same as 40 years ago and nothing anyone can do about it! Hold strong and be lucky to survive what's coming. Or be lucky to die before the witch returns...

The first part before the door has changed several times. When the music (danse macabre) started, I turned up the volume like crazy. The story of that song, as I was told over 30 years ago, I hope I still remember it correctly: Death trudges towards the graveyard with his violin over his shoulder. There he kicks against a gravestone and tunes his violin. When he starts to play this song, the dead rise from their graves and start to dance, more and more intense, becoming a frenzy of dance which makes them not realise that the sun is starting to rise. Then somewhere the rooster crows and the dead see the sun slowly climbing in the sky. They rush back to their graves as fast as I can and dive back in there to shelter for the sun that would destroy them. Death is all alone again on the graveyard, with his violin. He plays the sad ending of the song and trudges away again with his violin over his shoulder.

I always found het Spookslot (Spook=ghost, slot=castle) one of the artistic highlights of the Fairy tale forest. No cheap tricks, but a wonderful haunted picturesque place, with fragments of the beautiful Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens

The daughter peeking out from the grave used to be prettier in my childhood years. I guess she's decomposed throughout the decades, lol.

De Efteling is still the best amusement park in the world. I remember when this haunted house opened and it is still one of my favorites, sad to hear it will be gone .

The classical music piece of this show is Dance Macabre (Dance of the Dead) from French composer Camille Saint-Saëns.

First time I went to the Efteling was on a school trip, might have been 8 or 9 yrs old, can't remember being scared or spooked. Have been reading sprookjes (fairy tales) since I was about 4 by myself after being read to even at an earlier age. Us dutchies are not easily scared or jumpy I guess. Children can still play outside and walk/bike to school by themselves at most places here luckily.

I still have a picture sitting on my fathers shoulders watching the spookslot show. I was four and a bit scared but too curious 👀. Loved the dancing tombstones 🪦 and flowers. Didn’t like that the witch got burned 😂 I said to my dad why did they burn the girl? And the music was very bold..loud but I liked it even when little.

It was 1 of my favorites, mostly because of the music, Danse Macabre from Saint Saens. Walking up to the actual music bit, that part before it is pitch black, I couldn't see a thing. That scared me most of all. The new haunted House coming there is going to be named Dance Macabre, so I guess the music stays.

The Efteling is such a nice place to go with your family, we went at least 3 times a year, and most of the attractions are made for all ages, so young and old can have a great day or weekend, because you can sleep there too. New Years Eve is fantastic and now the Winter Efteling is coming, and that is awesome too. Nice to see you look at it with your mouth wide open, like children often do. Because it’s a beautiful place when you believe in magic and fairytales, with love 🥰

The song is called Danse Macabre(dance of the dead), the new attraction will use the same music and will be called Danse Macabre.

They’re building a new haunted castle and an entire new themes area. A lot of elements from the former Spookslot everyone knows and loves are returning in the new thing. Opening 2024.

Every year i went there When i was young And spookslot stayed amazing even it never changed But it became too old and its time something new But even kate bush was there when she young and made a music special It Will be gone But never be forgotten as my first step too love horror and mystery

Always loved this show. Have seen it more than once, and discovering different scenes every time. Too bad I can’t show it to my grandkids anymore, but there will be another Ghost attraction, luckily! So I can take them there… in 2024!

This was absolutely a masterpiece in anamatronics, but not scary at all. When I heard they were going to close this it really saddened me, and while I hoped to schedule an Efteling visit to get to see this one last time when I was in NL again in March, I didn't have the time for it. I do hope that the new attraction that will be built will be a worthy replacement.

One of my oldest memories from the efteling. Being there actually gave a better impression then this video. From what I remember, you are standing far enough away from the decor and have a good overview of the entire play. As a kid it was always excited to go in there, being in the dark and seeing the play. As I can remember, going there when being a little bit older made me noticed it was not so dark as remembering but that didn't make it less interesting. I enjoyed the music. I can't remember the storytelling though...

I never knew that story while I went, they added holograms later but the dancing graveyard was always there. I don't remember it as especially scary but Efteling is expected to have that side of scary that the real old fairytales had. Unlike Disney. Everything just feels more real. They are going to build a new hotel or something but people will have high expectations for a new haunted keep. I'm sure they will not just throw away the original works.

i remember going there as a child long ago

When I was young I didn't know the story and I didn't saw all the horror stuff. I was there enjoying the music. As a kid I did saw the man hanging and the graves moving, but it did nothing for me.

Always loved the haunted house, and I am sorry to see it gone, but it was very old and worn (not in a good way, fitting the theme). And I've been there many times, it was build one year after I was born, but the story was never told. This presentation makes it look about 300% cooler and scarier. the pathway is simply a slowly upward curve, in which you would encounter the door, that if you turn the handle would rattle loudly with an actual big chain on the other side, very scary as a kid, then you'd see the cage and then the chandelier with the arm that it slightly moving, not very scary just spooky. The main attraction was always the animated diorama (behind glass) with the beautiful music of the dance macabre. Which was also not really scary but spooky enough to keep you on your toes and close to your parents. You would then leave the castle and go down a slope (or stairs) outside and continue on your way.

I was there on the last day! What a wonderful exprience. Cannot wait for the replacement in 2024!

It only closed a small time ago and they are still working on getting it removed. The music and effects will go to the new ride! Dance macabre

My parents didn't allow me and my sister in when we were smaller, we had to wait outside with our grandmother. Of course we visited a lot later. People actually take strollers in. This was the first of the big animatronics but they have build on this knowledge. Fata Morgana is pretty good as well still.

GAH! Tim Burton was let loose at The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland! C'mon, it looks like it! Fun!

It was pretty scary for a 6 year old when it opened. A bit outdate nowadays but still sad that its gone. O well i went there to say goodbye to it and can't wait until they open the new one 2024.

Thankfully the music will stay in the new ride.

I loved it, and i will miss it. But i also can't wait until dance macrabre is ready in 2024!

There’s a gravestone with Kate Bush’s name on it in the graveyard. She did a video clip there long ago. There’s a recent video on how this attraction was made. We will dearly miss Spookslot. Efteling is my favorite park

And now this haunted castle is being demolished. Very bad decision by management. This was the basis of the Efteling where it once started.

i went there a few weeks ago with my brother and his son (6 years old) and he was like laughing the whole time hahaha

It was one of my favorites when I was young. Hard to believe one of the reasons for shutting it down was that it was the least appreciated feature... I am not aware of any kids having ever been really scared. I did see a RU-vid review of an two American ladies, one of whom was too scared to go in (but she was an adult).

You should check Niels Kooyman. On daily basis he talks about the developments in the Efteling. He's a fun guy to follow. Indeed sad spookslot had to go, but very curious what the (New) Dance Macabre will be.

It was my favorite attraction but they had to demolish it because the 'computer' was to old and not reparable or something like that but someone has made a exact raplica diorama maybe you can find it on youtube. Keep up the good work highly greetings from the netherlands

I didnt think it was very scary( even when I was a little girl) , it looked marvelous and the music was so awesome… never saw scared kids inside (but I might have missed them with all stuff going on, so many things to look at

and I was talking with a family from Florida over the weekend they thought the Efteling was great it can't be compared to anything it comes closest to Disney but darker they said the theming is extraordinary and the attractions themselves are also good they will definitely come back again they said
