I hope the bomb goes off hard. Sports fans will have to form an identity outside of the stadium casino.

After a series of players get caught throwing games to make cash, they won't have a choice to repeal. There was an article years ago where a journalist was invited to watch a series of sports events with a fixer in a hotel room, and every score the guy had predicted beforehand turned up, so things are already shaky.

@@sanford943 It was a Louis Theroux clip, I tried looking for it but couldn't find it... it was an anecdote in one of his BBC shows and not an article sorry.

As a horse player who seldom strays into other forms, I know that the return on these games is too low to warrant serious consideration. When I bet, I am making an educated guess based on the past performance of the horse and/or jockey. If I don’t like the odds I will pass and look at another race on another day even. The addiction to gambling is something that will teach you the harsh realities in life. While I was/am lucky enough to have only lost my winnings back to the tracks, others are not so lucky. Still to this day my wife asks me why I make minimum bets. My answer, ‘ I only bet horses that can return enough to cover my next few losses. It’s fun that way.’

@@redfescue5935 same here at Saratoga. Found a $16 horse to get even. The odds on games are ridiculously low. Barely worth a parlay bet.

The leagues rules are a bit confusing. I understand no betting on NFL but you can't bet on A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT sport inside the team facility?

Do you think if the government would legalize it and regulate it and tax it would help

State sponsored gambling at least have laws and standards. They resist getting into sports betting because they can't manipulate the outcome they can with scratch tickets and lotto. It would turn into a bigger fraud than the mob controlling it.

No. There is a really awful cycle going on, with many video games aimed at children training them to be gambling addicts using tools that are superficially *just different enough* from normal gambling that they've gotten a pass for the moment. Those kids will grow up and ruin their lives gambling as adults at a rate over three times faster than our generation is. Once the problem becomes too big to ignore, the public is going to demand hard crackdowns on anything remotely tied to gambling.

I think the reason people get addicted to gambling is both an economic issue and a cultural issue. Some people are just broke and hope they win money. The wealth inequality is obviously a problem here. Regarding the cultural issue, I think it's multifaceted. Some people with excess money think materialism will fill the void of meaning in their life. In reality, you'd actually feel better if you donated that money or spent your time volunteering. Others do it simply to feel connected to people. I have a friend who bets on sports solely because his work buddies do. It literally gives him something to talk about. I think the secret is to drop all of it, including the worshipping of athletes. Sports are fine to enjoy a bit, but if you're getting hammered every game and a loss ruins your day (or week), that's a level of tribalism that seems unfounded and ultimately harmful. We'd be a lot better off if we replaced most of the time spent watching sports actually playing sports. I prefer comedy for entertainment personally. It seems more honest and often brings light to real issues. Just my two cents.

@@limitisillusion7 There are many reasons like you point out that people start gambling. They keep gambling to the point of self destruction because of the dopamine rush when winning or losing. Just like any other addict.
@limitisillusion7

@@Mr.Unacceptable I think we should look for why people feel the need to seek the dopamine rush. I expect it's largely caused by low serotonin in the gut due to poor diets and excess stress. There's a lot of new research that is pointing to the serotonin deficiencies. If we ban the gambling and don't solve the underlying problem, we are likely to see more stress and ultimately more problems. People will simply give another way to be get their dopamine rush. We need to stop looking for authoritarian policies to fix our problems, whether gambling or censorship. It's not working, to in fact, I'd argue it makes things worse.

I fail to see the big deal... speculation for the sake of profit is Amercan as apple pie. Americans have been speculating on land and company stocks forever, what makes sports entertainment especial?
@BrenMurphy1

Gambling is addictive, and a percentage of people will gamble until they have nothing left. Combine gambling with drinking booze, and you have the perfect combination to waking up stone cold broke after a black out. Plus, kids growing up with normalised gambling are more vulnerable to addiction and basically homelessness. It's way too accessible and very very toxic. Don't confuse nationalism or any other ism with medical issues like addiction.
@limitisillusion7
@limitisillusion7 Год назад
Do you see nothing wrong with American culture? It's seems to me all that obedience to profit has a dark, self-destructive nature to it. Just because it's the current paradigm doesn't mean that paradigm is good.... Have you seen the world? The only people that can sign off on the dominant collective behaviors are those who are so embedded in the distractions we've created that they can't see the decay. I'm really not a pessimist, I'm hopeful. But that hope manifests as a push for change.
