Save your starter, battery & clutch by using Neutral as often as possible, start in Neutral Idle in Neutral or turn the engine off but be sure to start back up in Neutral! I learned the hard way 500.00 +.
There is a troubleshooting process. If you get to tapping the starter with a hammer and it works then its definitely a starter. If the first thing you do is start hammering the starter and it doesn't work... you cannot assume its the starter cause you have not tested any of the components that come before the starter.
Thank you very much I've been pulling hair out over my bike! For AWHILE now! Nobody could figure it out so you saved me from running around a bald woman🤣😊 thanks again!
Check your positive and negative wires my negative wire was loose and all it would do is click and my orange and red light went on when I was riding my bike just a loose battery wire
Beating with a hammer is not a fix. The starter motor has brushes contacting the armature. Their pooched, is why shocking with a hammer is only temporary. I rebuilt the solenoid first and still no fix. So a whole new unit will be put in. Sometimes lucky, sometimes not. I did the relay's too. Thanks for your demo.
I tested the solenoid with a multi meter and it was working. I was tapping the actual starter motor. If the solenoid was not working due to corroded contacts then I suppose tapping it may work in a pinch.
I was riding my 1200 Sportster low the red and orange light went on about 15 miles from home so I turned around and went home turn the bike off about ten minutes later I turned the bike on and tried to start it and it just clicked wouldn't start check the fuses they were all good so I checked the hot and it was tight so pulled the battery out shut my eyes and wiggled the ground wire while it was loose. Tightened it up starts every time I have a 112,000 mi on that and it runs great so bottom line it was a loose ground wire
I had the same problem and it was good for months after I tightened the ground wire now I'm having the same exact problem and all my connections are tight. Be on the lookout lol
I don't trust all relays, you never know if someone bought one & returned the bad one,Id have got another one. Not much annoying then tearing apart anything just to replace Junk & need redo again. Hope ur bikes better. ✌
Thanks from Vancouver!! Rode my 03 Road King in the rain yesterday and I only got the relay to click this morning . Do you need a special $700 Harley hammer or will a regular one do the job?😊
HD XL883r sporty Mines jus clicking once changed the terminal to my ground wire it began to start three times then didn’t start again I don’t know what to do it’s not the starter kuz it’s won’t even engage the starter at all jus clicks once and bouta buy a new starter relay switch to see if it’s that
Did you replace the starter yet? I'm having the same thing with my Sportster 1200 custom. I'm pissed 😡 cause I was saving 💰 on gas and now I have to buy a starter unless I find a place here in San Antonio Texas that rebuild them. Replaced all fuses, relays but it just clicks not like your bike, it's a click, click. My battery is at 12.8 volts but I'm just trying to get riding
I gotta Harley Davidson Sportster 883r XL n it’s jus clicking I thought it was a bad terminal on my ground wire replaced it w a new terminal n clipped a new connection n all that n it started a few times but now it won’t n she jus clicks once’s never engages the starter at all
I got a Dyna and sometimes it’ll click really fast and then no click. Battery won’t hold a charge. Took it into autozone and confirmed the battery is fine. I got a new battery a couple years back and it continued having the clicking problem. Changed starter same thing. Installed a button on the solenoid cover to start it cause I gave up on the issue. Finally gonna change the regulator hopefully it fixes it. If not then wiring problem.
Mine clicks when i first start it up after not running it for a week. the first start it clicks then the second it starts right up. After i ride it around any start ups it acts normally. What do you think it is? The relay? Or just a battery slowly dieing?
Did you test the battery with a multimeter and it reads 13 volts? If so, when you hit the start button are you getting 12v to the relay? If so, is that 12v making it to the starter solenoid? Need to get a multi meter and make sure everything is getting power and figure out where the breakdown is
I've beaten the hell out of Everything I've ever worked on..as in any project especially RC cars But after so much frustration and a good old fashioned beating to those doesn't help 😅😂
replace the starter.....you will be out somewhere with no hammer and it wont start trust me i know from experience..2007 1200l stood on the side of the road for hours waiting for a rescue
