New fav airless, Graco 190PC.
This is a bigger video, covering my entire process of spraying out primer on a new apartment renovation. Running through indepth of the airless, tip choice, spraying techniques and full of my usual tips and tricks.
I've teamed up with the guys from GO Industrial to run through the 190PC Express (which is my current fav), and super stoked at the way it handles low pressure spraying and just keeps pumping it out for the jobs I have on. If you're starting out on your own, this is the way to go.
Checkout the links below for the Graco 190PC Express. Use code 'PBJ' on the GO site and you'll score an extra FFLP516 Fine Finish Low Pressure tip like I've used in the video.

Hey mate. Love the vids. I've got a job to paint wainscoting down a hallway. Its gloss oil based . Just curious if the 190pc can be fine enough , or would it best be suited to a gx19 ? Or the quick shot . Quick shot would be a handy thing as far as no hoses and leads. But just thinking if the 190 could do a fine enough job with the right tip then maybe its a more useful choice for a bigger variety of stuff ? I feel like the price of the quickshot is based purely on its portability ? Cheers mate.

I would say the first coat should alway be watered down (thin), so it binds to the drywall, but not at the speed you gave as an example. The next coat will be thicker and is the final coat. No sanding needed. I find on new build properties where the the first coat hadn’t been thinned, it will not bond properly to the drywall and in 2-years can start to cause problems. e.g. when I have needed to do some repair work to the drywall and need to sand down the drywall and some of the surrounding paint before repainting, I have found some of the old paint just peels of as I am sanding it making the job harder.

I have been spraying this way for 24 years not one's have I seen paint coming of bare gyprock/drywall that I have painted. All my walls a primed first maybe it's the product or you putting water in the product is the problem. It's like cardboard it soaks into the top layer.
@sydneyshinshi
@sydneyshinshi 3 года назад
I agree with the backrolling story but only if you are getting ever bit of dust off the wall and ceiling. If you dont get all the dust and spray over you are creating headaches for some poor sod in years to come. If you run a brush around and backroll on the first coat there is no need to vac or broom off the plaster dust as it gets mixed up withe first coat paint. Nice job by the way.
@paintingbyjosh
@paintingbyjosh 3 года назад
Cheers mate🙏 Not sure what you mean as in a headache in years to come? That the paint will not adhere to the bare gyprock?
@sucktdeep
@sucktdeep 3 года назад
If there is a lot of dust left on the walls after sanding it will get blown all over the wet primer and dry into sandpaper. Especially around the corners. How do you avoid that problem? Do you microfiber off the dust before you prime the drywall?

I backroll the sealer coat only, as if there's sanding dust etc less chance of a problem. But I don't backroll any other coat as from that point its a perfect surface. What your saying is right, if there's no dust on it. Using a 516 that's a lot of paint hitting that surface so I prefer a 412. So I'm more likely to have that problem than you are. Only time I go above a .12 would be membrane on a roof I go to a .14 or .16. Same tips FFLP wouldn't use anything else. I was actually the first guy on RU-vid, to start using fine finish tips for interior painting, I have another account. Idaho stole his original vids from me I was the first guy on RU-vid showing the fine finish tips etc while painters were still using standard tips. Was a trade secret for a long time. Your as good as me mate and I don't say that very often.

What pressure you spraying this at mate? That’s my biggest problem I can’t get right. Always making sure the pressure is right. I turn it up like suggested, and my trim ends up running….. what do you spray your walls at. And what do you spray your trim at? Please and thank you 🙏
@paintingbyjosh
@paintingbyjosh Год назад
I run my pressure all different depending on the product the machine I am using the temperature it can vary from day to day even if I'm running everything the same. The best way to know what pressure is best as soon as you stop getting the tracks on each side and you are getting that nice spray pattern it's so hard just to give a pressure so many things come into play. What product are you using for trim? Cheers 🙌
@New-Breed-Drywall-And-Paint
@New-Breed-Drywall-And-Paint 8 месяцев назад
@jay.c6080 hey man , he pretty much got you covered . Its so many factors on why something happens when spraying . It’s almost impossible to answer without knowing your set up , experience level , product your using . Without that info I’d say it’s a user error from just moving to slow and or to close to what your spraying . As well as to small of a airless tip . Yes you read that correctly TO SMALL OF A TIP . For example as im sure you know the first number has a meaning as well as the second number and everyone on RU-vid explains them numbers but don’t ever go into what exactly that means . It’s like regurgitated information one guy after another with many not understanding . So if your spraying I will not explain the numbers and their meaning as I’m sure you know . If your getting runs bump up your first number or lower your second number or both . Example . Your getting runs with a 212 tip . Bump it up to a 312 or a 310 . A 212 will apply more paint then a 312. The orfice hole on the tip for a 212 and 312 will throw the same amount of paint . But the 212 will apply it thicker because the fan size is deceased but the amount of paint is not so by bumping up a size and not changing the orfice size of the tip you will get a thinner coat and less likely to run, because the fan gets wider but the amount coming out is the same is what makes the coating get applied thinner . I hope that makes sense . Josh Is a very skilled painter and on point with his skills for sure . I personally feel he’s using to large of a tip but if he’s getting the results he likes then no reason to change . You have to find a set up that works for you and the speed you like to and feel comfortable spraying at. A man who don’t move as fast should use a smaller tip then a man who can run through a job . Paint is getting expensive and more expensive every year so I nderstandimg these airless tips is very important . I seen a guy use eight 5 Gallon buckets of paint on a job that should have taken 5 . That’s close to $400-$700 dollars of blown money depending on the material being used . That’s a car payment . And another tip if I can I’d give you is to not skimp out and buy the cheapest material . That can get you in poblems as well and cause uneven or blotchy finish that is not due to user error . Use good paint and get to understanding your tips . And make damn sure your cleaning them out properly . Even the smallest amount of dried paint inside can ruin your fan pattern . It may look good while you are spraying but when it dries could be a mess .!if you had one section of the fan that was throwing out less paint then the rest. And over the distance of a ceiling in the right lighting show up as stripe marks . That most won’t even know the cause of or understand why it happened as well as a blown out tip thats leaving a bulls eye right in the middle. Meaning its applying way more paint in the center and won’t be noticed until dried . Could cost some money to fix that issue as adding and spraying more and more layers will just not fix it especially using the same tip and not understanding it’s the tip .
@MuscleAKAOzzy
@MuscleAKAOzzy 2 года назад
My issue is your spraying one if not the best sealer primer etc without back rolling but lm sure it's not the best to sand so you will need plenty of sanding already before your first coat 😉 l sand only after the fist top coat very lightly but all coats are back rolled especially on brand new homes The debate on back rolling continues 😅
@paintingbyjosh
@paintingbyjosh 2 года назад
I never back roll first coat on last coat. You are making more work & sanding than what is needed. I don't understand the point on back rolling the first - never have in 25 years and never had a drama. Cheers

josh, if u don't back roll and don't have a texture nap from roller, how r u going to have an even surface, because gyprocks r not as smooth as plaster joints, if its too smooth, all the joints will stand out like a dog's b*ll

3 coats rolled on adds 33mm to the surface? You don't understand how it works. 3.3 cm lol. It's just a 11 mm sleeve and using it for three coats does = 3 cm of built up paint. Great video otherwise you have put in lots of hours on a sprayer without a doubt
@paintingbyjosh
@paintingbyjosh 2 года назад
I know exactly how it works. I was just trying to explain in a easy way that the more coats you put on with a roller the more paint build up the wall will have. So if I spray two coats and roll once it is going to be a lot smoother finish than rolling three coats. What's all I was meaning. Yes I could of explained it better! Cheers
