I present to you The Oregon Trunk during the green of Spring time! I once again fed my obsession with this piece of railroad this year as I have been wanting to do an extensive video for a couple years now during the Spring season. This video features mostly the Deschutes River Canyon on the North end of the Subdivision as well as a few other locations throughout. It might not seem very "Spring Green" at locations in this video and you would be right. Some years the grass doesn't get very green like you see here even during the peak of the season.
Locations and days in order:
March 18, 2022
00:00 -Tunnel 2/ Twin Crossings | Deschutes River
05:20 -Trout Creek Canyon
11:01 -Paxton
11:25 -Crooked River Gorge
April 1, 2022
13:53 -North of Maupin | Deschutes River
18:25 -Lockit | Deschutes River
20:01 -Tunnel 1 | Columbia River
April 4, 2022
20:34 -Tunnel 1 | Columbia River
April 15, 2022
24:00 -Sinamox | Deschutes River
29:15 -South of Oakbrook | Deschutes River
31:57 -Oakbrook | Deschutes River
33:43 -South of Maupin | Deschutes River
35:30 -Trout Creek Canyon
36:00 -Tunnel 5
38:16 -North of Madras
38:51 -Trout Creek Canyon
41:35 -Tunnel 2 | Deschutes River
May 20, 2022
43:54 -Tunnel 2 | Deschutes River
47:27 -Tunnel 1 | Columbia River
51:29 -North of South Jct. | Deschutes River
May 21, 2022
55:49 -Beavertail | Deschutes River
Railfanning the Oregon Trunk is not for the faint of heart. The line sees very little rail traffic and it is common to strike out. A good day would be to see 3 or more trains and I had one trip during this time period which I didn't see any trains over a two day period. It can get frustrating but oh so satisfying when you do have luck on your side.
Recording equipment used:
-DJI Inspire 2 (Zenmuse X5S)

-Samsung Galaxy S10

Truly amazing. My wife and I favorite playground. We stood under the Trout Creek Bridge and filmed a freight passing over us. From what I gather from your videos that that opportunity of ours was actually very rare. I feel lucky to have caught it that day!

That Ferromex is a long way from home, along with a CN behind it, this is truly foreign power. BNSF, Ferromex and CN on a UP Sub...North American railroading at its finest. What a catch Dan!

Whao! Get the Big Gulp! & popcorn out for this one, maybe even a couple of samiches. I'll say the GE's had the EMD's out numbered on these wagon Trains! Only 3 EMD's in the whole shoot and they were all "Real Foreign Power". Really enjoyed this northwest escape, casting it on the 65" with the headphones on, so I can catch those prime movers, powering around. Course, the tunes kind of make that a must. Just..........sort of makes it feel.........like being there with...................... Yours Truely!!! Happy Trails! Again Dan! And Thank You! 🏆😎❤️🚂🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋🚋 🍺🍿🍔🌭
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 2 года назад
Thank you Ron I appreciate that! I spent a lot of time putting this one together. Yes the GE's always beat out the EMD's on the BN it seems. I have noticed the Trunk is a pretty good place to catch foreign power as well.

This is some really beautiful photography. A regret of mine is having never hy-railed the Oregon Trunk. Having worked for BNSF for 22 years in the PNW, this was part of my assigned territory, just saw it from the highway between Wishram and KFalls. Outstanding video. Almost makes me miss railroading.

This video makes me so homesick. I grew up in Madras and left to join the Navy in 1970. Have lived in the southern part of the US since then. I cannot imagine how they could build a railroad in places like this. How on earth did they get the materials to the locations.

Hi Dan. Thanks for another visually spectacular production. I loved your descent towards the rear power as it was crossing the first of the twin bridges towards the tunnel entrance. And then your cross over at the Trout Creek Trestle from one side to the opposite was perfect. And of course I approve of the CP closeup at about 7.25. Your tail end chase across the trestle around 8.40 had flawless control. Super nice lashup with the KCS around 14.00ish. 25.39 - yikes. Very very nice work, Dan.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
Thanks so much! Glad you noticed those maneuvers! I really enjoy the cross over Trout Creek Trestle myself and enjoy getting close to the rear of trains. I feel safe enough to do so since I'm flying forward and can see! As opposed to flying backward in front of a train.

Nobody does it better than you, Dan! Ever the Master at work. One of the other commenters described your photography as hypnotic and that, for me, is the best description of the effect it had over me as well. Here I was hungry and about to start lunch but so powerfully did the scenery have its hold over me that it laid there for an hour untouched. Please, do it again, SIR! You are too good to us lesser mortals!

Excellent smooth piloting and camerawork. Love the camera angles and the occasional below-track-level viewpoint in Trout Creek Canyon. Don't know how you keep up with that train over such a distance, when I know that you have to land the Inspire, jump in the car and drive up ahead of the train, and launch again... all without falling behind the train. Very enjoyable to watch.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Год назад
Thanks Rick! Yes because of the DJI Inspire 2 I am able to point the camera upward and get shots from below the level of the tracks in places. I think it's awesome! Man oh man that is my song right there. I spend so much time figuring out what locations I can get with other locations on a chase. I spend a lot of time on Google Maps and Earth scoping out locations ahead of time when I visit new places.

I've driven past tunnel 1 many times over the years I've seen the area that green. It's also the first time I've ever seen BNSF and UP motors together. If memory serves it was a south bound manifest. Thanks for a wonderful video of some great trains, wonderful scenery, and a little education. As always, I'm looking forward to your next video.

Wonderful video, Dan! Thank you for spending six days over a two-month period to capture these trains in this beautiful landscape. The lush green areas contrasted with the areas that contained less vegetation. At 55:03 when you were doing the ground level view of the train coming around the bend in the Deschutes River with the rafters on the river, the engineer gave a horn salute. Was the horn salute for the rafters or for you? Thank you for compiling this video! I enjoyed watching the video!

Thank you Thomas! I spent quite a while putting this one together so your kind words are appreciated. I'm assuming the crew of that train was blowing for the rafters on the river.

Is that a CP unit mid-train at ( 4:50 )? Do BNSF and CP have an arrangement for the use of each others power?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 2 года назад
Lots of power gets interchanged among all the railroads. Later in the video there is quite a bit of CN power and also a Ferromex unit. That grain train came out of Canada so CP power is not super uncommon.
