YT is tossing these older episodes back into my feed suddenly even though I already watched them - probably on my old laptop and the viewing history didn't transfer over. It's been fun re-watching them anyway like seeing friends' home movie reels from the old days. 📽
You guys are the only people I know who can making changing tires, and other assorted automotive chores, exciting! I've been reading the comments from the last day and everyone else seems to think so too. For whatever reason it seems like most of us find your videos so relaxing. Keep on doing what you're doing. Thanks.
Joyce B.: Yes, He and Arielle are a perfectly matched pair. They work very well together, each knowing what to do and when. They also seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company.
A trick I've used to set the bead on low pressure tires is; Put a ratchet strap around the circumference of the tire, centered around the middle of the tread. As you tighten it, making the circumference smaller it forces the bead out. Then just put a bit of air in it. Once the bead is "set" you can take the ratchet strap off and finish airing it up.
Assuming that the tire is round. I've had ATV tires delivered and strapped together, that resembled a pretzel. I let one hang overnight from the garage rafters and is resembled something round and did set using your method. The other, no way. I had to take it to the shop. I was/am to chicken to play with explosive gases.
What I learned today from SLA: Fire can be used to set a bead. Who knew? Pepper is one chill cat. I need to appreciate my husband so much more for all the money he has saved us for over forty years by working on our cars and trucks. Another awesome video...especially when you can make upgrading your vehicle interesting to watch!!!
I used to live in Palmer Alaska. I spent nine years in Alaska. It is the most beautiful country in the world. But I do love Canada to. Me and my wife has been watching your shows and we have enjoyed watching everyone of them. I do miss Alaska but I do not miss the cold
Thank you. We just did the ATV maintenance here too. I watched this video with my toddler, it contained his favorite themes: ATV, wheels, tires, doggies. Arielle, you are a lucky woman.
A few tidbits Eric... you really should install a brand new fair-lead for the new winch. If there are burrs in the rollers from the steel wire rope/dirt/sand, etc. those will act like a knife on your new synthetic rope. Use the old fair-lead for the old winch's new location. Also, pertaining to the winch. if you fab a 2" receiver hitch for mounting it at the rear of the Polaris, you can also fab a 2" receiver mount to the front of your flat-bed trailer. You could also slap it to the rear of the Pick-up for lighter duty tasks. As for the tipping of the Polaris, double check that you didn't have any fluids leaking, ie., motor oil draining into the airbox/filter... fuel mixing with oil, etc. I'm not overly familiar with that rig, but I did once get a smoking deal on a piece of yard work equipment that wouldn't run... the airbox was full of oil from it being tipped on its side at one point. Another means of setting your bead, use a heavy duty ratchet strap around the centerline of the tread and snug it down... as you fill with air, it'll force the sidewall outward to help in setting your bead. And, as the close-up always tells... "Bo knows"
I can't imagine how much money you guys save by doing all these repairs yourself. You are definitely gifted to have all this knowledge Eric. You both are very talented.
Love your videos! Doesn't matter if it's about changing tires or cooking food because you guys keep it so interesting. At the end of watching your videos I feel always a little smarter:) thanks!
You guys work so well together my wife and I always get a chuckle out of you too my wife and I are best friends and do everything together as well have fun on your new skid plates they look good cheers.
Eric: “We’ve had this thing for about 2 yrs and we’ve put 1000 miles on it, 1000 hard miles. And we haven’t really broken anything!” Ariel: “we haven’t broken two axels?” Hahahahaha
I think you'll like the synthetic cable. Usually rated stronger no kinking and no fraying. So in other words you won't get stabbed by little pieces of cable when you pay it in or pay it out. If you use your winch a lot you should have been invest in a snatch block. It'll cut the weight on your winch in half so you're not wearing it out.
Old tires make great small container gardens, just cut the sidewalls off with a jigsaw , leaving more on the bottom of the container so it holds its shape and the black of the tire really warms the roots, I’ve grown cucumbers in them and gotten a great crop.
I always get excited when you guys post a video, they are always well filmed and never boring. I love seeing the puppies make an appearance. Thank you for what you show living a self reliance life in Alaska... I hope the garden 🧚♀️ bless a very plentiful harvest this year.
Wowwy.. the ingenuity required are endless.. you guys proves living in Alaska is not for faint hearted and desks bound type. All must DIY. Btw just my two cents, every opportunity to opened up the wheels, metal discs break plates etc, nuts and bolts joints, hollow joints, do rub some grease. It helps protection against elements, hence rusts. Your pets are all lovely...
Synthetic line doesnt kink and is a lot nicer to handle, but the steel cable is superior if your line is running along the ground, rocks, trees, etc. Its not hard to fray synthetic line
From a time when tubeless tires didn't exist, make sure you put plenty of talcum powder on the tube then remove the valve core. Get a nice loose fit on the tube then inflate it to about half the final pressure. Now let the air out. This will prevent the tube from folding over and causing a pinch. Inflate the tire and you should be good to go. If you are using tubeless rims, be sure and soap the beads...Stu
A little ruglyde and a couple 20 inch tire spoons will make that kind of tire work go a lot easier and they are really cheap. I saw a little tire change machine, the tire spoons and the ruglyde on Amazon for under $150. With those three items getting a ATV tire off the rim and a new one on the rim is a five minute job. I really love what you guys are doing up there. It looks like a dream life.
Go fishing for halibut and see how strong you truly are! In Kodiak, it's like pulling up a chevy. Good eating too. Off the mainland, the Homer Spit half day will take you to the stock.
My dad always just drove on the side of the tire with another vehicle to get the bead off... I like that idea better though and the brake fluid match idea is hella cool!!
Old tyre changing trick: paint the tyre with a soap solution (not detergent). The soap is slippery when wet to help the tyre onto the rim then helps with air-tightness as it dries.
Not that y'all weren't really interesting, but your critters were very busy! Kitty approved of Eric's little tire shortcut, Bandit was mud fishing, and glorious Bo showed off his fantastic eyelashes! Glad to see you! ☮️ Peace and love 💜 from Kimberly in South Dakota 💙❤️
For fun you should mount the old winch on a receiver hitch setup so you can put it on the rear of the tundra or polaris and just have it connect to a quick connect setup. Awesome setup man!
You can also use a rope buy tying in around the center of the tire. Then you can use your prybar or pipe and turn it like a tourniquet. As it tightens in the middle it pushes the beads outward around the rim..
We love watching you do all tasks and chores and appreciate how you are able to do some of the hardest things with the most simple ways, like working on the polaris. Thanks for the great content.
It’s interesting how similar the weather is to here in Wyoming. I thought it was but my husband didn’t agree. I keep telling him we should move up there but he said there is way too many people up there !😂
So very proud of you Eric you are so talented and determined you are amazing. Glad to see that you had Pepper there to cheer you on. Continue sharing all these wonderful videos with us. Love y’all!
Y'all sound like my husband and I. He thinks I don't know what I'm doing either! Eric! You made me so nervous putting those tires on that way! That's the old lady in me talking! Love y'alls videos! Wish I was younger so I could do something like what you are doing.
Thanks for the video. It's good to see you using the pipe extension - we call them "snipes" here in BC. The cat showing up for vehicular inspection was good too. Do be careful with that high lift jack - they're hard on body parts sometimes. Stay well.
