Ruaidhri O'Connor and Cian Tracey joined Will Slattery on The Left Wing podcast to discuss Ireland's narrow defeat to South Africa in the first Test in Pretoria.
Two costly errors from James Lowe in the second half saw the Springboks score a brace of vital tries and the lads are on hand to pick through all the talking points from a dramatic encounter.
There were contentious TMO calls, some strong Irish play and some areas of concern as thoughts now turn towards the second Test next weekend.

Both teams have plenty of space to improve. The Boks made as many errors and gave as many penalties away

I often wonder if the northern hemisphere realises that when we come there in November it's the end of the season for us. I don't hear anyone say the Boks might be fatigued after a long season. Also this guy saying that some of the decisions were because the Boks were at home, do you guys remember when the referee told John Smit to talk to his players and then allowed Ireland to take a quick tap and score? That was worse than any decision seen on Saturday.

As an SA fan, HUGE respect for Ireland. They fronted up against our pack. Our game plan Wes to go wide and that worked well. Unlucky Ref decisions for Ireland.

Bok fan perspective: I thought we played a mediocre game. Our kicking was atrocious, which meant that we gave away a lot of territory. Our kick-chase is one of our strong points and we hardly ever saw any of that. Almost no mauls from lineouts, but that could've been because they respected the Irish maul defence. We also wasted about 80% of our opportunities in the Irish half. We looked very rusty.

Why are they using the excuse of being tired, both the South African players and Irish players, play in the same league

First off - hope you are having a good time in SA, as a fan I love visiting Ireland. Love your country and watching rugby over there. Both teams had multiple chances, but I believe the Boks tried a new strategy playing wide and running. Great fronting on the scrums, physicality and staying in the game. Can’t wait for next weekend. 1-1 seems fair with your team. They came to SA to play. Much love from 🇿🇦. You have an amazing team.

AB's supporter here. Why is it, when Ireland loses, it always comes down to (well, the ultimate excuse) that they weren't at their best. They used the same excuse in their WC quarter final exit. It makes them sound like sore losers and whinging little tossers. And its an insult to the opposition and not a good look for them and the game. Sure, there were calls in yesterday test that were bad on both sides, but ultimately for me, SA were a little bit better and deserve the W. Both sides weren't accurate, but they both had equal chance to win the game. The officials had some shocking calls and need a thorough review.

Fatigue affects Iriah and South African players... seem to forget South Africans have also been playing... as well as altitude...South Africans who don't live in that area are affected by the altitude as well...so can't excuses

The Irish have mastered playing on the edge of what they get away with, NZ mastered this tactic under Richie Macaw, Ireland have mastered this tactic in the past few years, when they get away with it, they win, when they don't, then they lose!

Is that guy seriously complaining about Lowe’s try being brought back? Kelleher is clearly on the ground and then makes a distinct move to kick the ball back. Blatant cheating. And this guy complains about the refs calling it right? What an idiot

What has been found out that Ryan and Doris Definitely aren’t Captains. Paul O’Connell and Rory Best really knew how to talk the referee’s even when blowing.

What is this guy saying? The TMOs job is literally to look at the lead-up to tries😂 James Lowe only scored because of the offence at the breakdown

Saffa here, bomb squad needs to dismantle the TMO next. We can’t call a scrum from a free kick anymore as it “slows” down the game! Jesus, Mary and Joseph - what the feck does the TMO do other than slow down the game, especially when the ref keeps saying “take as long as you like” to the oke!! Ruins the game. Irish deserve massive respect for their comeback attempts, they just don’t know when to quit! Most teams would’ve on that form and that far down. Keep fighting, next Saturday we rumble again👊🏻

When it was a boks scrum, they dominated. When it was an Irish scrum, Ireland did not take the hit, winning free kicks. Refs need to sort that out. The reason why they went back to ruck to call off the Irish try, is because you can’t go off your feet on the opposition side of the ruck and kick the ball back. Even just lying there prevents a clean out for SA. Aki wasn’t holding his weight over the ball, resting on his arms, that’s a penalty to the boks anyway. Really simple. Ireland in Ireland when they beat SA by 3 points a couple years back, kicked a ball forward through the ruck, which you can’t do, and went on to score a try from it. which should not have stood. The rub of the green went Irelands way that day? SA got the call their way this time. Best team won if you look at the entire game. The usual Ireland attack was totally missing today.
