Former South African rugby player Naas Botha - regarded as one of the country's finest ever first-five's - joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport to recap the first test between the Springboks and All Blacks in Johannesburg, as well as looking ahead to the second clash in Cape Town. New Zealand's 31-27 defeat over the weekend was their third successive against the Boks. This weekend however, playing on the south coast will likely be an easier task for the Kiwis after competing on the Highveld in the first test.
Botha talks to Devlin about the first match and what stood out to him, particularly about the All Blacks. He believes the Kiwis lack the needed expertise in key playmaking positions to break the Springboks down.

Wise words from the legend Naas Botha: 1. It's the players, not the coach 2. Super Rugby is not preparing the All Blacks for test rugby. 3. a 25-year-old has 20 years of experience playing rugby, no excuse to drop balls 4. Test rugby is all about pressure. 5. The AB's are not pressuring the Boks with tactical kicking.

Oh by the way, after a request by Planet Rugby, World Rugby match officials confirmed that the Mbonambi try was the correct decision. Barrett knocked the ball on, it went backwards for Mbonambi and then he scored the try, just before the line, but then his momentum moved the ball over the line. So, contrary to the Cody Taylor try, Mbonambi's try was legit.

Agreed the standard of ref/TMO was not good. But the bad ref decisions for each team cancel out. NZ pundits constantly cherry pick the decisions they dont like and never look at the "bad" decisions that worked in their favour. For example the the ABs mauled try should have been disallowed for double banking, Sam Cane should have been red carded (again) and Mc Kenzie's conversion kick timed out but was allowed, whereas Sacha's was ruled out. Sport is a game not an exact science, there will be ALWAYS be mistakes.

I wonder whether the people who think they know more than a referee who has officiated at two world cups, at a couple of dozen matches in the Six Nations and Rugby Championship and about a hundred club matches in Europe ever get embarrassed when they make statements like these. Do you think you know better than your doctor, too? How about your mechanic? Your accountant, maybe?

@@randomlyfactual1943 If Brace has such wonderful credentials as a ref (btw never heard of him prior to this & I've been following rugby union for decades), why does he not understand the basic laws of rugby? Although I didn't make the original comment, I don't see why anyone other than Ref Brace should be embarrassed... in fact, mortified. He's been called out by some of the top former international rugby players & pundits in the world. He had an absolute shocker! Tell me Cane shouldn't have been cited (and red-carded for breaking Kolisi's nose and part of his cheekbone... all because Cane has never learnt to tackle correctly & is a repeat offender)? Do you understand the relatively new law of double banking? If so, you'd understand why NZ's first try should not have stood. Are you unable to see the shot clock issues? Pretty obvious if you were watching. If Sacha F-M's kick was timed out, then DMac's should also have been timed out as the clock had reached zero quite a bit before he even started taking his run-up to kick. Bongi Mbonambi's try was legit - explained in detail (see link) plus take a look at Rugby Law 11.5b. The original comment was far more gracious than I am... it said that there will always be mistakes by refs. Probably so, but at least be consistent with both the wrong & right decisions. And if you don't keep up with current rugby laws, don't criticize those who know better than you. And yes, academics research medical matters and don't blindly follow what their doctors tell them (doctors are not Gods & neither are rugby refs). www.planetrugby.com/news/law-discussion-springboks-controversial-bongi-mbonambi-try-was-the-correct-decision-heres-why

@@vivb5180 See here's the problem. Folks who never A) played, B) coached or C) reffed a single competitive game of rugby goes and learns a what amounts to a buzzword like "double banking" or "Law 11.5" and suddenly know more than the ref. Just like actual laws, the laws of rugby allow for interpretation. There isn't a single one that is definitively correct. One referee can look at Bongi's try and feel that there was not enough control when dotting down and would not award the try. Another referee might feel that as long as there had been downward pressure and he was technically the ball carrier, then that satisfies them with regards to awarding the try. Neither referee is wrong, neither one is right. If they base their decision on anyone of the hundreds of laws, then their decision is valid.

@@randomlyfactual1943 Wow, you know me so well... I've never played, coached or reffed a rugby match... really? Your crystal ball needs some buffing. Double banking is quicker than explaining exactly what this entails, but happy to explain in detail if you aren't familiar with this 'buzzword'. Whichever way you put it, it's illegal and and should be penalised If former international ref, Nigel Owens, can interpret rugby laws correctly, it should be possible for officiating 'teams' to get it right, too. But it wasn't just Brace who was a disgrace, because when he asked for the TMO to review the high hit on Kolisi by repeat offender Cane, the reply was that there was no need to review the incident (meanwhile, the injured player is bleeding profusely & it turns out that his nose is broken & part of his cheekbone is fractured)... yet this does not warrant a second look and review?? Sorry, simply not good enough. There are refs out there who would make better, more consistent, and more accurate calls and 'interpretations'.

In my humble South African opinion...I would start Beauden Barrett at 10...maybe McKenzie at 15. But Beauden has been a thorn in our Springbok side. @adamgpreston
@adamgpreston 11 дней назад
My question is if we struggle against South Africa these days because our super rugby players aren’t exposed to the way South Africa plays then surly that goes for them too it not facing our way of playing?? I think it’s more than that. Go back 15 years and look at the space backs had to work with. With rush defences, slow play. And rule changes our style of play isn’t as effective anymore. I mean we can’t just run teams around and tire them out. They just bring another team on at half time and keep slowing play down. Look how skilful our abs under 20s are and they are getting absolutely smash by say a French team who just monster them up front and defend you into making a mistake. The games changed but Nz keeps trying to throw the pill around skilfully and it’s not working like it used to. It’s a shame because our style to me is far more entertaining and skilful but that’s not what wins internationals where space is closed down super quick
@quentinadkins432

It's like West Indies cricket in 70's fast bowlers ruled batsmen adjusted then came spin & great fielding batsmen adjusted again Teams adjusted to NZ's quick play by better conditioning defence set piece turnover and counter attacks So AB's want to actually keep the fast paced play into space but develop defence tactical kicks set piece ... they have to adjust I do believe the super rugby benefitted NZ more than SA purely coz SA did not adapt to running style during that period (and they should have) but yet they provided NZ with good defence to run against. So NZ stopped getting to play against teams high in defence skill I guess? Saturday will be a humdinger again. Respect to NZ AB's. 🇿🇦
@adamgpreston
@adamgpreston 10 дней назад
Yea good points. So I guess it’s the case if they just keep getting better at smash and bash and we just have to find a way through them. They are on a journey of pressure though defence and we are on a mission of pressure through attack. I’m happy with that challenge and I just hope razor and the abs are too ;)

I didn’t see anything wrong with NZ kicking strategy- it’s just that the Boks responded with better quality with Fassi and Sacha But the ABs had to kick because they were not getting much gain line success. The only critique and improvement they could make is kicking the ball into touch and test the Boks’ line out cos it was not functioning properly

And yet he had the most tries scored by his back line as a Bok flyhalf (per match) than later fly halves (Stransky, Honiball) … Danie Gerber, Carel du Plessis to name just two back line “greats” who played in the back line Naas marshaled. And they were not team mates of his at a provincial (state) level. He was peerless as a general - great vision/field management and if nothing else was “on” - could drop from almost anywhere on the field. The truth is all the teams that played against him - knew - he was the GOAT and they would almost (like Bradman) be playing against 16 instead of 15 because of his ability to score points. And no - I am not a BlueBull supporter (I am a Lions supporter) - but I can recognize that he was strategically and tactically brilliant. As a youngster he was fearless - but his Coach at the Bulls taught him to stay back out of the fray, to deliberately take the ball and manage field possession. Brains over brawn. That kind of nous a person like Dan Carter and Grant Fox appreciated.
