The o-ring that came with a STP Oil Filter was oversized and caused the oil filter housing cap to break during a routine oil change.

Good to see you online. Always worth watching your work.

Thanks for the insight! same here... the STP was the only filter on the shelf. $10.50 Autozone. Doing my first oil change this weekend, along with a transmission oil-change service. I will give the o-ring a good look over.

Ugh! I'm done with aftermarket filters, period. Sometimes you have to use what's available, but I've seen and heard way too many failed aftermarket filters, both oil and air. Funny thing is, many are made in the same plant as the OEM filters, but to lesser standards. Glad you caught it. Not sure of that particular design, but many similar types keep the oil from draining back on shutdown and starve the engine of oil on every startup if not working properly. Yours likely would have done the same and kept your oil pressure nice and low. Some others have bypass valves that open almost as soon as you install them. FWIW a mechanic friend of mine told me years ago that the low oil pressure idiot light comes on in some vehicles at 2 psi! Worse still, many Ford oil pressure gauges(like the one on my truck) are just for show and either show good oil pressure of no oil pressure. They aren't gauges at all. Thanks for posting this.

My dad taught me that by the time the idiot light comes on the engine is already damaged. One of my pet peeves is the lack of analog gauges on modern cars. This Dodge/Mercedes RV does not have any gauges and it does not even have a dipstick for the transmission WTH.

I think your dad taught you well! What a great idea removing the dipstick! Think I'll cap off the one for the engine too to make it "permanently lubricated" too. Haha! Next thing you know, they'll come out with permanently lubricated bearings and ball joints. I guess they'll last forever.............. Not a good time to be in the grease zerk business, that's for sure. I think out of the 5 vehicles I have, their is a grand total of zero grease zerks. Of course, I've replaced several ball joints, tie rod ends, u-joints, etc. All were permanently lubricated. Evidently that rust powder they lubricate them with isn't what it's cracked up to be....... I'm getting the ones with grease fittings from now on. This "permanent" lubrication is code for planned obsolescence. I just think it's criminal to put faux "gauges" on the dashboard. I suspect that the all might be that way now though.

@@blmeflmm66 BMW has eliminated the oil dipstick on some of it's engines now too. I guess they want to generate more sales of rebuild kits.

moral of the story is german engineering is over engineered. why is there a darn eiffel tower looking thing plastic piece on an oil cap?that can break? idk ask mercedes? if this was simpler like the rest of the vehicles in the world say US domestic or Japanese maybe this wouldnt happen. not stp's fault. its an oring. if anything that cap should be made of good grade german aluminum. not plastic.

Why would you use a $3.00 STP oil filter in a Mercedes Benz in the first place?
@mars1952

The STP filter cost about $12.00 and I explained why I used it in the video.

I did not notice the sirens until after I posted the video. I was just glad the guy next door had turned off his leaf blower.

Modern STP products are complete junk! It's not the Richard Petty STP we used to know. Sad really. You can put Fram Filters in the same category. Junk!
