In this video, I'm planting dahlia tubers in the low tunnel to get a jump start on the cut flower garden.
Thanks for visiting the Freshcutky organic gardening channel. In the garden, I will answer some of the most common "gardening for beginners" type questions I get, including growing flowers from seed. Growing greens, growing flowers, and planting beautiful organic food is something I'm really passionate about. Thank you for joining me as I learn to grow flowers, cut flowers, vegetables, and much more.

Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

Very informative video! Thank you for posting, Your narration is smooth & natural sounding. I did find myself wishing you had included a few more details here. You did not tell us whether you use sterile seed-starting mix or non-amended garden soil for starting your tubers. Also missing was how you judge the newly-sprouted tubers ready for transplant outside. Do you plant them as soon as outdoor temps are favorable? Or do you find they perform best if allowed to reach a certain size before transplanting? Thanks again!

Hi - I left out a dahlia in a pot, and there was slight frost. The green part got all damaged. Is the plant now dead? Or should I leave it alone and it will shoot new growth elsewhere?
@MrRJS27
@MrRJS27 4 года назад
One thing about being stuck at home nowadays is that you don't have the problem that it's still below freezing when you go to work so you can't open the greenhouse or low tunnel...but if you leave them sealed on a sunny day you could fry everything. But now I can go out in mid-morning to open things up as required,

I live in California Bay Area, the high weather here right now is about 60ish degrees Fahrenheit (slowly getting warmer) with lows of high 40’s when the sun goes down with a bit of rain some days. Is it a good time to put dahlias out to grow? Or should I wait?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 года назад
Unfortunately, I don't have any personal experiences with starting dahlias in cooler weather. However, it can definitely be done - depending upon the method. If starting them in cool weather, I would do it either indoors or with the use of an unheated low tunnel so that the tubers are kept nice and warm. I find that I have the most trouble with rot when conditions are cooler and too wet. I'm so sorry that I wasn't able to offer more help. Thanks for watching! :) :)

I just purchased a bag I had like eight tubers inside. do I break them up and plant them individually or just put them all together?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 4 года назад
Sounds like they were packaged as a clump. I wouldn't try to divide them. In most cases, many of the tubers in clumps may be too damaged to plant individually. Clumps are especially easy, too, if you're growing dahlias for the first time. You can always divide it later in the fall when you dig up the plant. Hope that helps! :) :)

Can I divide the dahlias I bought in a bag from Lowe's??
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 4 года назад
Technically yes, but you'll need to inspect each tuber carefully to make sure the necks are healthy and there are viable eyes. If you've never divided tubers before, I would totally suggest just planting the clump this season. There's always time to divide in the fall when the plants get dug. Good luck!

Hi I have dahlias that I am overwintering I'm in zone 6b. My question is what soil do you use? I get my dahlias and they seem to do great. I've left them in their pots and made it another year. Issue is they get these big ugly brown spots on the leaves I treat them organically and it happens to them all. Now I don't soak my dahlias I let them dry in-between waterings but I'm thinking it's a soil issue bc I do not overhead water and it's happening in Walmarts , agways, harts and even an expensive place. Although I purposely bought one with an issue just to save it lol. I lost one from the big place bc I found crown gull hiding 😔. This year I'll try them on drip using rain water only. So I want my soil to be perfect. Do you have any suggestions?
@jennapaddey2239
@jennapaddey2239 Год назад
I know this was a year ago, but I had the same issue and it occurred because of overhead watering or heavy rains! If you water right at the soil as opposed to above (so the water isn’t hitting the leaves) that should help with the brown spots :)
@Padraigp
@Padraigp Год назад
Could be a mold in the soil tpu can get bacteria probiotics that you can add to the soil different ones fight against different mold and other bacteria could also be something missing in the soil some nutrient but sounds more like a bacteria or a mold is attacking them. I haven't got a solution for that because I have a similar problem here but been researching and adding these benigicial bacteria are supposed to help. Some people

@@dillonqaphsiel7977 I was just seeing a video of how in our zone we can leave in ground but cover with plastic and then mulch so they won’t rot. It made me think that it’s definitely a commitment to grow this flower. I ordered 30 cafe au lait for my mom’s wedding venue that she rents out. I should have just stuck to zinnias...I mean some look like dahlias. The only problem is my picky mom doesn’t like the ugly burnt legs of the zinnias. Cheers!! to another year of uncertainty. Anyway, what did you learn from this teachable experience?

My dahlia tubers are sending shoots out around the neck region of the tuber with a tiny red dot at the end of each shoot. Is this good? What does this mean exactly? Any ideas on how much time they’ll take to sprout out of the ground since they’re active now?
