The new SPV3 release is here, and with it came a whole host of new additions, modifications to existing content and various QoL features and updates. Im in a fortunate position where I havent played spv3 since maybe 2019. Its been so long that a lot of my memory on the experience has eroded. On top of the time its been, I’ve changed quite a bit as a person as well. Moods and opinions have shifted and it was interesting to revisit it. Especially interesting due to my familiarity with MCC on PC to compare it to. SPV3 once upon a time WAS “the” modern halo PC Game but now? It shares space with its slightly buggy but equally ambitious brother. How was my time with SPV3’s “final update?”

Hey, for the record, as someone partially involved with the audio team including working directly with Jafet Meza, I feel I need to address some details about the overall sound mixing and implementation. I can confirm that everyone involved with the actual music aren't the people that implement it in the game. Jafet doesn't touch the editing kit or any part of the Halo engine and his work is handed off to someone else. Who that is is beyond my knowledge (It could be the lead designer Masterz1337, or someone else, I'm purely involved only with the music.) There are parts of Jafet's and our work that are used in the complete wrong place instead of where they were intended to play, or were outright never implemented, this is partially responsible for the game audio often appearing constantly "bombastic" when that was never the intention. Some of the music cue placement in this mod is misplaced and the audio team aren't the people responsible for that, a significant few people in the music team wish they had more say over placement of triggers because it ends up poorly representing their actual work. There is a whole myriad of upcoming and completely overhauled tracks, several of which were already completed and were not put into 3.3 to avoid clash with what was already there, or for reasons unknown, which is why there's still a massive chunk of the older and outdated material. The newer tracks and updated ones have far more range and subtleties that complement the gameplay far superior to what the unfortunate result here has ended up being. Long story short the audio team would love a build with more creative control over the music cues and implementation, preferably by someone who actually studies and understands more about music and how it should and can be used to interact with and engage with the player and the overall game experience, lol

@@LateNightHalo Kinda sucks that you blamed Jafet in this, he works hard on these songs and your community will probably think that he's not even trying after what you said, the music in the game is only mock ups for now and he's re-working pretty much all of the soundtrack to make it perfect, Jafet is a Halo fan and really wants to give the player the halo feel. Hope you will clear your statement soon, because what you did there is diminish is work, even if it wasn't your intention.

I'm not trying to start a fire over SPV3 or anything, but as a composer and modder myself, I know I would be frustrated to see my work misrepresented and I feel it was the right call to make some of this known. I've been lucky enough to be involved in a few of the great remaining strongly knit together communities for CE and Jafet's over the the past couple of years and I've seen a lot of discussions across these communities that have shown a lot of light on things that the wider public community don't necessarily get the whole picture on. I can say that this "misrepresentation" doesn't just occur in terms of the audio, but a lot of the asset team and assets adapted for or used in SPV3 over the years as well, there are some controversial figures and moments that have happened in the modding scene over not just the last few years but quite a while, and it saddens me that some of their and those actions are partially why this sort of thing happens. (I use "misrepresentation" for lack of a better word, that word carries a lot of meaning behind it that is not the intention of my post, but it's the best I could convey things.)

to preface this you don't actually install it into mcc, you run custom edition still. however masterz (the team lead) uses whether you own mcc as a way to justify installing a pirated copy with all the spv3 content in it. which is a weak justification in my opinion. im kinda wondering if this build will get a dmca from microsoft since it contains the entire game repackaged into their installer.

Going on about one of my comments I’ve made before... I’ve always loved how Halo had a thin sky. When I was in school I would go in my backyard and stargaze in the night of California, while imagining I’m on a Halo ring. I got a deep sensation out of it and it really made me wonder what’s out there in our galaxy. “Do you ever wonder what’s up there?”

This update/version seems really good, cant wait to get it, i do kind of wish it had more 'fun skulls' like bandana or acrophobia etc. The game is clearly focused on being a bit nore difficult than vanilla CE, hence removal of easy and addition of a difficulty above legendary, so the skulls there are unique and make sense, i just wish some were a bit more... whacky

Quite honestly, SPV3 is a mixed bag for me. There's a lot of new ideas that liven up the Halo formula for me and brought back fun I haven't had in a while (I had just finished a playthrough of Halo 4), but at the same time the artstyle felt like a lightly fried meme. The additions were mostly positive, but some stuck out to me as pointless, like the DMR, Battle Rifle, and the Magnum all serving the same role, not to mention the single fire on the battle rifle existing in the first place.

Honestly, other than SPV3's really garbage installer (that for some reason simply refuses to understand that a computer can have drives other than C for me), I don't mind CMT's remake; they absolutely ruined Lumoria and everything that made it interesting or fun, though.

spv3 looks horrendous, half of the time I can't even see what I'm shooting at because everything is unsaturated and dark, they even took TSC:E and made it looks bad, lmao. The OG halo is bright, colorful and stylized, still looks fine today.

@@snark567 Yeah, at times it looks like an N64 game and on top of that it runs like ass. I have a high end PC that runs Fallout 4 at full specs with mods; there is *zero* reason I should need to run this game at low specs and low resolution to get more than 15 FPS.

But the DMR, BR and Magnum don't all share the same role? Just because they can headshot enemies doesn't make them identical. DMR deals the most damage per-shot of any UNSC non-power weapon, making it excellent at punching through Brute armour and even the shields of lower-ranked Elites. Combine that with a 4x scope, and you essentially have a mini-Sniper rifle that demands pacing of shots in order to make the most of it. Conversely, the Battle Rifle has the *weakest* per-shot damage, making it ill-suited at eliminating shielded enemies unless you can circumvent or eliminate said shielding first (typically through a plasma weapon). However, the massive ammo pool combined with the ability to switch between burst and semi-auto modes while zoomed means that this thing can mop up entire swathes of unprotected fodder without making so much as a dent in the player's ammo supply. The Magnum is expressly the high-powered sidearm tuned for close-range engagements. It's damage approaches that of the DMR, meaning that it can be spammed in order to weaken/pop an enemy's shield, but you're better off doing that with your primary gun (especially the AR) and leaving the Magnum as a headshot machine. Heck, both the Magnum and AR are so complementary to each other (especially if the player utilises the entirety of their arsenal like Grenades and melee) that a player could go through the whole game using only those two weapons.

What I like about the SPV3 DMR is that they really leaned into it being more of a mini sniper. So not only does it sound super beefy, but it also causes enemies to flinch and stop shooting while they recover from the powerful shot. It's useful against Brutes which I believe flinch a lot less than Elites. I have a distinct memory of throwing a grenade at a brute that was advancing and then shooting him with the DMR to stun him backward so he couldn't dodge the grenade. Flinching and disrupting enemy firing patterns is also a HUGE component of a games' difficulty. So a weapon that can flinch an enemy that's shooting you as you run to cover (notably T&R's hanger) is useful.

Also he’s an asshole to people in his discord a lot and bans people who disagree with him. He also melds his political opinions with Halo, where he wanted to make an ODST campaign where Mickey faced homophobia in the ODSTs (which doesn’t make sense because in the context of Halo humanity has basically solved racism and other kinds of bigotry)

@@AtlasofSol spv3 isnt installed in mcc and we did not get official mod tools yet for mcc as well. All spv3 does is check to see if you HAVE mcc, and if you do it will allow you to install the Halo PC game that spv3 runs on

The suppressed weapons were not really for aesthetic purpose when I played spv3 on heroic difficulty ( Especially in the beginning of assault on the control room and many linear compact areas afterwards ) They really had their own tactical advantage

I absolutely love the elite HUD shown at 14:21, it's reminiscent of the Halo builds from the 90s but with its own style and fits perfectly 👌

This seems much improved, having played SPV3 when you last reviewed it. Even with MCC on my shoulders I'm feeling inclined to give it a play. Aside from drive space I don't have much to lose.

@@LateNightHalo They were different though. They fired single shot projectiles as opposed to the Blue one's stream of plasma. Not a huge change but it is more than just a color change.

My biggest hope is that the MCC on Steam gets Steam Workshop support. Being able to easily install mods like this would go a long way to making them more accessible to the masses.

I like SPV3’s music because the grandiose music fits the saturated feel of the entire mod. The sandbox, the visuals, the environment, and the enemies are all fleshed out to their maximum potential. It only makes sense that the music should be too. The overbearing tunes make the experience feel right to me

Honestly, while it isn’t objectively bad, I just feel like overall it lost the halo image. The whole thing looks more like an over-modded Half Life 1 mega project. To each there own, but I feel like it really lost itself to try an stand out. It’s Like a fanfic that has grown so far away from the source material that it’s basically an original product wearing the rotting skins of its host.

I have to say that the effort in this mod is amazing, but there are 2 things that i don't like: -They add stuff just because it looks cool, making some weapons feel kinda useless and/or out of place -The game sometimes looks amazing, and other times looks like a PS2 game with PS3 models (This last one is a little bit nitpicky, considering that it's all done on the Halo CE engine it's really amazing)

Correct, actually. The way we managed a consistent burst-fire in Halo 1's engine was to actually program the burst via a veeeerrryyy small (but still somewhat noticeable) charge-up before it fires.

@@ares903 It was the only way we found, through multiple years of trying, to make it fire 3 shots consistently. Other methods made it spazz out and fire anywhere from 2-5 shots at one time, and basically all at one which made for an incredibly wonky gun.

thats caused by regions. you seperate sections of the models into a region and you can set damage value for that region. once its damaged enough the region switches to the damaged version of the model and from there you can spawn the broken pieces. in halo ce scenery objects dont have any physics propertys so the broken off pieces are actually undrivable vehicles in order to utilize the physics propertys.

I tried this over the past few days - I wish I could see this how you do. I don't like it at all. I know it's a case of personal taste, but this left a bad taste in my mouth. I went in with good expectations, as per people's reviews of this game. I was just blindsided by an experience that left a horrible taste in my mouth. Love the video though mate. I'd definitely wouldn't say that its the mod 343 should learn from or that it is the next step for Halo, if the stretched levels, crude enemy AI and enemy encounters, bloated weapon sandbox, poor balance and difficulty, gimmicks shoved in your face, even the music feeling too amplified or over-enthusiastic is anything to come across. The mod has definite flaws, and I'd even say, with how its constructed, that the mod doesnt have much flow at all and that there's too much to use, so nothing feels distinct after a few missions. If I had any noteworthy final comment to leave off on for anyone else reading this, be mindful of what you like and dont like and formulate your own opinion accordingly, SPV3 is not perfect and should never be treated as perfect.

I actually played this mod about 4-5 years ago but my notebook laptop couldn't really handle it so I ended up forgetting about it. But after getting a new laptop that can run every game I've played so far on Steam with high graphics I decided to get this mod again. It definitely changed a lot from when I last played it and for the better. I absolutely love this mod and am very happy I can fully experience it.

one thing i will say. the difficulty is fucking nuts. on normal it takes so many shots to kill a grunt and jackal if they arent head shots. plus the BR and DMR added to the game are REALLY bad. the covenant weapons are the best and if you play always go for the brute shot. the best of the covy weapons

I haven't played much of 3.3, but some of the changes I've noticed are pretty dumb. I really hate how they decided to keep the assault rifle's low initial rate of fire, despite making the zoomed shots even slower. Another thing is having Johnson and the Marines at the beginning of the second mission. Obvious lore inconsistencies aside, it feels very jarring and kills the lone survivor atmosphere that the vanilla game had. The most bizarre change though has to be the revive mechanic. Masterz is very unabashed in his apologetics for 343's game design, and this is very clearly inspired by it's inclusion in Halo 5. After going back to regular CE, it's hard for me to enjoy how busy this mod can get at times. More doesn't necessarily mean better.

This mod is good, I played through most of it but deleted it recently. I loved the extended levels and the few levels that were completely re imagined were amazing, my issue was that calling it resource intensive is an understatement, when I played it I thought my PC was going to melt. Also, the level Keys is next to impossible.

What I think is awesome about the silenced weapons is that it actually adds a legitimate stealth option. If you're patient enough on say Two Betrayals, you can clear all those rooms of sleeping grunts and relaxed elites without them ever knowing you were there thanks to a silenced BR/SMG. I think it's amazing that a working stealth mechanic was added with those weapons

Masters himself abhors Halo 2's linear level design, as well, and has basically sworn oaths to not touch the game outside of weapon tweaks if even.

But alright, even if we discount Master's involvement, Halo 2 is a terribly broken game that literally exemplifies the phrase "held by duct tape and glue." There have been uncountable efforts to create great content in it ever since Halo 2 Vista, and we've yet to do even a tenth of what we can in Halo CE. Our best bet for a new playground is Infinite.

I would definitely say it’s potential is kind of held back by the engine they are using. The graphics feel held back, the gameplay could be rebalanced so you don’t have 5 different single shot weapons. I think they could have the DMR be the quiet stealth weapon than have the Silenced BR.

the map that the "b-team" made, TSC:E, i still consider to be better than SPV3. The visuals are less cluttered, the sounds feel beefier, it runs better, it has better lighting, enemy and weapon models are better, i overall vastly prefer it to SPV3. I think they went too far with SPV3 trying to add new stuff, and they probably should have stopped at around 60% of the features they implemented.

When you mentioned the weapon sandbox and its redundancies and over-supply of weapons, I immediately thought about my most rookie mistake when forging maps as a kid. I placed power weapons and sandbox weapons EVERYWHERE. Every base/building had a shotgun/sword, every tower, roof, or bridge had a sniper weapon, and every spawn area had at least 3 utility weapons. I remember my first map I was so proud of. But then during the playthrough, the weapons broke the map. I had 3 sniper rifles, 2 rocket launchers, 6 DMRs, 4 Needle Rifles, 8 plasma rifles and spikers, 2 shotguns, 2 swords, a gravity hammer, and 2 plasma launchers. It would've been fine for BTB fiesta, but I had built the map with the intent of it being 3v3 slayer. More isn't always better, and now I have an equation for weapon placement on maps. Weapons sandbox is the make or break for every map in Halo.

For once I disagree with you. I share Noodle's opinion about SPV3. This mod is just a mess. It's quantity over quality. It did not felt like a Halo experience. The art is even more uglier than HCEA, the weapon sandbox is a mess, the levels are too long, etc...

Messy is definitely the way to describe this mod. Although it's overall an enjoyable experience, it does have its negatives. The point about the skybox is one that I do not see repeated often enough tbh. Halo CE had some of the best skyboxes in the entire saga, and I am glad that this was further improved upon in the mod, in the mission Halo. It's also what disappointed me with the Halo Infinite showcase. There didn't seem to be any gas giants, stars or nebulae in the clouds. Just some plain boring blue sky. Hope it's something they change by the time the game releases.

It depends on your weapon. Elites have shields, so plasma stuff burns through that faster I believe. Brutes are easier to kill with human weapons. Magnum shouldn't be the weapon of choice for everything.

This game reminds me of one of those Fallout New Vegas "enhanced graphics mods" videos on RU-vid where they would have some terrible texture pack or character overhaul that made every single character, object, or texture the most unpleasant thing to look at (Master Chief's armor especially reminds me of one of those T-45/T-51 retexture mods from like 2014 that just looked horrendous). On top of that, they would also add in some dogshit ENB presets that would crank the bloom settings up to 11 and made my eyes bleed just by looking at them. It just looks really ugly

You're the only one, it's the most overused and unexplained argument against SPV3 that never get backed up. Nobody goes into lenght to analyze where the "bloat" is. Even if to be fair both end of the spectrum is subjective, i feel the oposite toward the original CE, it simply doesn't have enough because just playing H2 make CE incredibly outdated mechanically speaking and from a weapon roster stand point. It's way to small ironically for a game with such vast open environement. For example... SPV3's extended rock-paper-scissors with weapons affinity, nuanced stats, and effects add much more depth that feels welcome. Even the extended levels made me appreciate the sandbox more. Even Ruby's rebalance took notes from it. It's a mod with a shit loads of good idea that adds lots of replayability and depth. SPV3 effectively modernize CE and manage to keep the the atmosphere's main point for me. Still though screw Masterz.

The mod is 'bloated' because its stuffed full of irrelevant trash that artificially lengthens the game. Terribly-designed segments added to every level that turn classic, well-balanced experiences into tedious slogs. Intricately detailed copy-paste weapons contrasting horribly with poorly-rendered environment textures that makes the whole thing feel like a stale tech demo. Awful enemy distribution, with countless high-ranking elites placed everywhere with no thought to the logic of having them there. In OG CE gold elites are like mini-bosses that guard important areas - in SPV3 they show up anywhere and far too often. The mod lifts voice lines from halo 2 that completely breaks immersion - we all know these lines of dialogue belong to another game. I could go on... The whole mod is just a poor reinterpretation of Halo CE that makes the game shabby and boring. The modders need to learn that sometimes less is more. OG CE is a perfect example of subtle and efficient game design, and SPV3 misses the mark entirely.

You're absolutely not. There's a lot I want to like about this mod, but there's also a lot getting in the way of that. And it's not even just that many of the levels have been lengthened in such a way that doesn't improve the overall experience (although that's also a fairly massive fly in the ointment). My biggest gripe with it is how they needlessly changed a lot of basic things - such as the controls, the UI, the textures in a lot of places - in a way that actively makes the game *worse* than the vanilla experience. They even reorder lines of dialogue in some of the cutscenes that achieve literally nothing except making them seem like they're out of order. It's like they try to change everything just because they can, rather than zeroing in on only the parts that would actually make the game better.

Two different assault rifle models, the Battle rifle has two modes that are redundant, the SMG is a slightly worse Assault rifle, the DMR shouldn't exist like it somehow does in Halo 4. The covenant weapons have a few oddities. Also vehicle wise the Grizzly is not needed, the wasp has it's clipping issues. Level wise the Library is even worse ( and I'm the odd one in liking the original version) and the tutorial level on easy and Normal frontloads too much onto players even those familiar with the games.

I always wondered how Halo would be effected game play wise if you were given a third weapon slot in the form of a plasma pistol or magnum. Not designed to give you three slots, but a back up, last resort weapon to give you some breathing space incase you run out of ammo and are not in safe melee range. Or, a combat knife like in Reach. I know most of the time everything is dead before the need to find more ammo even crosses your mind, but with skulls like famine and that one that uses two bullets when you fire expend ammo quickly. Plus, having the side arm could allow you to hold onto a extra sniper clip or spanker rocket.

Noodle's opinion is mostly him being mad like a hipster cuz it's popular and it got articles. Because of an outadated build that is irrelevant now because of a lot of changes, corrections and fixes that has come since in newer versions... and most importantly, the "CMT developper" he talked about without giving any name whatsoever, and spitting bullshit with "we only add stuff cuz it's cool", when it's not the case at all. As a result, it spreads misinformation, and of course, some people prefer being stupid and naive and take it as fact. @@ProsecutorValentine dude i've seen enough about the mod to know that i never want to play it. for instance, having a battle rifle with a single shot mode is already incredibly stupid. but having that in the same game as the magnum, the dmr and other precision weapons just makes the weapon sandbox bloated. why would they have added those guns for any reason other than because its cool? you've got your head shoved far up your ass buddy.
