This knife is exactly for me. I work as a handyman in and around the Boston area, and while I know there is an exception for work use knives, I try not to take advantage of it just in case. This looks like a more hard use sort of knife from Spyderco, along the lines of the Shamen, in an extremely legal length. Right now I carry a Spyderco Cat in BD1 when I have to go into Boston, but I think this is going to be kicking that out of my pocket.

For you, I can *absolutely* see this. Legal, beefy, and ergonomic? Nice.

I just ordered one to replace my Cat as well. I install window treatments and sometimes after putting a blind up I pry it to shift it into position. I'm thinking this could handle that type of use (abuse) well. Do you have any experience with prying with this yet?

Guys, this is actually the size of the Spyderco Bug. Nick's hands are misrepresenting it...

8:01 I actually hate that that small tab sticks down and stops the blade from closing. I hate it even more that I bought mine 5 years after this video was made and Spyderco has not addressed and fixed it. I am going to give mine a quick grind to shave down the steel a bit. Great review even with no sleep.

I think this knife is for people who want a small, stocky knife. The Little Native is durable like the PM2, and compact like the Dragonfly.

I'll be interested to hear how you think this compares to the Chaparral. Thanks for persevering through your fatigue to bring us a great analysis!

I absolutely love the Lil Native. It's been in my pocket a whole helluva lot since the day I got it. You get used to the blade infringing on the compression lock very quickly.

My kind of knife and a nice replacement/upgrade to my Spyderco Cat. A small but strong cutting tool, with better steel, washers, lock, and overall finish (for twice the price, natch). I stopped carrying my ZDP Dragonfly. Nice knife for light duty but I was often needing something more robust and hand-filling yet legal in my town. My Cat is great but getting long-in-the-tooth and this might just fit the bill for my EDC.

Thanks for the video! After carrying my lil Native for several weeks it has really grown on me. The spydie flick action to open it is fantastic. You can remove the knife from your pocket and open it without turning it in your hand at all. It fills the hand so much better than the dragonfly, especially for someone with larger hands. I prefer my g10 Robin to my dragonfly, just because the ergonomics are better for me. This knife has the best ergonomics of all three. For a small, discreet edc that is fun to open, this knife is hard to beat. Nick's revised review of the chaparral might be a little harsh about the backlock, but the lil Native will replace the chap as my EDC of choice. I might miss the slightly longer blade, and the thinner blade and pocket feel, but overall, both are the best coin or watch pocket deep carry knives around. Really though, try the middle finger flick for a while and then see how much nicer it is to flick open than the PM2.

To me this fills the void for someone who is looking for a US made knife in that smaller area (smaller than the PM3) with a compression lock and better materials in a base model (following suit of most US models). Still not for me but I could see why someone would pick one up for sure.
@coopercoe
@coopercoe 6 лет назад
This is exactly what I was looking for. Really a smaller Sage 5 (a chaparrel compression lock) would be ideal, but this works for my purposes. 95% of the time I don't need a larger blade, and when I do I am usually at home with other options.

Mister Nick Dangerous, I deeply appreciate the extra love you are putting into your "maintenance video". By the way, and there IS a Way, does your high tech camera have a "pause" button?? Oh by the way I actually own and love this knife, it’s just a really great, and sturdy knife. Really enjoy your videos, I actually stopped watching other knife videos just to watch yours.

Well my dilemma is to get this or the UKPK. Looked at the lil Native slipit and I do not like the silver pocket clip and hardware. Can get the lil Native blacked out or the UKPK with black hardware. Now to decide

Great preview of this and look forward to your review. I have the same question you posed: where does it fit and what is the intended usage. It's a maybe for me - love the sliciness of the ZDP DF 2, but don't like the handle. This has a beefier handle, but also a thicker blade. DF 2, Lil' Native, Persistence, Ambitious, Cat, Q Ball, Urban (probably missed a couple) all seem to be going after similar usage in the under 2.8" blade length.

@adambomb9855

I disagree. I think the compression lock on the native is what makes it so cool. It is much more fun to play with than a backlock. Honestly I just find back locks boring and difficult to close 1 handed. Also with a back lock the knife would be too similar to the dragonfly. Like I said the compression lock is SOO much better in my opinion. Now Nick mentioned a slip Joint? That I would like. I think this is defenitly a version I would want to get. It is especially good for places that do not allow locking knives.

I know we are not live now.. but as far as Compression Lock being for a left-handed user. I am left handed with a standard right-hand PM2.. I can Operate the lock but it's not comfortable to do so automatically but I can do it easily.. I am thinking of trying the Left-Hand version that Spyderco offers.. that way my hand does not have to go at a odd cant to operate the compression lock.

I am not a fan of compression lock never have been but I like it in the back lock just wish it hade the wire clip

I had to grind down the portion that hits your finger when using the compression lock and then had no choice But to create a sharpening choil. That was a flaw from spyderco in my opinion

Seems like it competes with the Chaparral. Loving the Chap!!
@coopercoe
@coopercoe 6 лет назад
The chap is only slightly longer when closed, but much thinner. Also, the lil native g10 is very square and does poke out more awkwardly if you carry in the 5th pocket in a pair of jeans. The chap has a longer, thinner blade that is better for slicing. The lil native is more fun to open, and sticks out of the pocket a little less. The lil native has a shorter wire clip, like the dragonfly. My ti chap is much louder when opening with the backlock. The lil native is far faster and easier to operate one handed. The ergos on the chap are different, but I cannot say which is better. I rarely find myself using the thumb ramp when opening packaging, and don't miss it. The lil native feels much beefier, less likely to break than the chap. It is also heavier at 2.4 for the lil native 2.0 for my chap. for $80, the new FRN chap is a great deal, and maybe the best edc for $80.

5:30? _Sleeping in_ it sounds like. This looks extremely useful for its size, where I've found longer but skinnier blades less useful. But *#$%& it,* their fascination with the compression lock has removed them from my buy list. For me, thing Spyderco almost always had going for them was producing _ambidextrous_ knives. Probably the most in the industry. While I never swap clips for consistency's sake, back locks or axis locks win the day with me for a _user_ knife. So, it was bad enough I had to pass on the Slysz for opening, but now all their new models have this one-sided lock that's harder than any frame or liner lock to use left-handed. Boo. So, I'll stick with the Native 5 or Manix as possibly the last "modern" Spydercos I can use.

Meh, not for me. Spyderco has already so many models with blades 2 3/4" or under, so..... Personally, I find the original Native a bit on the short end of medium/regular already. (Meanwhile the Shaman went all the way and beyond in beefing it up, and then that's not what I want either.) So thx, but no thanks. Maybe for somebody else.
@MJFallout
@MJFallout 6 лет назад
Yes, you're right about the blade length on the Manix. However, on the lightweight Manix I could never get over the boxy-ness (Oh Boxy, we remember you fondly) of the handle, so weird. Then, the regular G10 Manix, is just a tad over my most preferred weight, it's 5oz if I r. cor., and I like 4.2 best.

Should I get a native 5 or manix 2 and g10 or lightweight version of either one?
@ChuckBeefOG
@ChuckBeefOG 6 лет назад
Depends on which lock style you want. The Manix is more of a one hand friendly knife but the back-lock Native is very reliable with minimal maintenance.
@andyrichardson6188
@andyrichardson6188 6 лет назад
Depends on usage and how pocketable you want. Manix 2 feels huge in the pocket for me. Native 5 is big but can be carried. More of a weekend knife for me (work in an office).
