You don’t have a huge corrosion problem, in upstate NY? I spent about 15 years in southern CA, and I got spoiled! Then I moved back to MA, and suddenly, all my stuff is rusting! I am gradually getting it under control (I oil the platens on my machines, all my woodworking tools, and I oil my non-stainless knife blades)! One key to protecting my woodworking tools? I take them in for the winter (normally they live in my barn shop)… If they stay the same temperature, ideally warm, they don’t condense moisture.

Great take, Bryan! The Sage is one of my favorite Spyderco platforms, especially my Sage 5 LW with custom CF scales. Nice! You fooled me. When you got to value, I thought you’d give it to the Sage for not needing the aftermarket clip, but then you turned it around on me! Always love your insights

Sage-1 Maxamet all the way, for knives of this size, the thinner profile and seemly much thinner BTE Sage-1 wins for me. The Sage-1 Maxamet cuts like a laserbeam.

If the Sage 1 had the customization options the para3 has it would be a no brainer. But I love modding so much. I hope this new found love for the Sage 1 brings in more customs scales and hardware!

Very timely Slicey! I'm just about to make the decision, and was waiting up on your battle to the death. I have to say its a difficult choice! Everything points me in the direction of the sage, but somehow the compression lock and quirkyness of the para 3 also speaks to me. I will most likely go for the Sage 1, but it somehow feels like the 'safe' option. Guess I will have to get my hands on a para 3 in the future to find out if its for me or not. That lanyard hole though... makes no sense... Thanks, this helps solidify my decision for sure!

Will be carrying my para today. Love that knife. Although I do have the CF bugout coming Saturday. Was holding off on this knife for a while but my buddy had his for close to 1 1/2 years and he still loves it so here goes nothing lol.

I just ordered my first para 3, in maxemet. ive been put off syderco for the last few years, after owning a couple paramilitary 2's, and not being particularly impressed with them. lately, ive gotten back into Spyderco, and been picking some up here and there. I can't quite put my finger on what it is about the para 3 I like, especially over the paramilitary 2. its smaller than I usually prefer, but I figured id try it out, and maxemet as well.

There have been a number of reports of people snapping their maxamet blades and Spyderco not covering that under warranty, so if people want toughness this would not be the way to go. But if you're just cutting cardboard boxes and won't hit staples, it's probably fine.

Tip snaps easy on the para 3 in maxamet, but definitely gets and stays sharp just strictly cutting only and, mine snapped from a gentle pry in soft pine, it’s was in sub zero weather though.

Yeah, sorry about that blade confusion. Also, I'd personally give the value to the Sage 1, because you basically have to pay the extra $30 for the third party clip for the Para 3.

I found this knife on eBay only place I could find it but it’s 289$ I’m really debating on getting it I have 2 s30v paras now that I’ve customized and I really do want a maxamet but idk with the price an all.

I would go as far as to say that for very most pocket knives there is no reason for the edge to be thicker than 0.015” ... and once I am at it ... isn’t a lanyard hole the worst way to attach a lanyard?

I love para 3, but I think I'm no longer a fan of compression locks. I just purchased this sage 1 maxamet over sage 5 maxamet, because I find spyderco liner locks better for me than compression locks.

You need diamonds and some patience, but it isn't hard. It's not chippy or anything. Just takes awhile.

Diamonds for sharpening, although sharp maker sticks work well for touch ups. It will rust so a little anti corrosion treatment is applicable.

Spyderco tagged the Sage 1 G10 as “cool grey” which is slightly different from the pm2 para 3 maxamet darker hue grey G10. I just wish the blade was stonewashed on the sage.
