My Stretch 2 K390 is my favorite used Spyderco. It feels good in hand and it just keeps cutting!!

I’d largely overlooked the Stretch model until the K390 line dropped. I’ve had Compression locks wiggle open in my pocket, ever since then I’ve been pretty exclusively backlock. Pretty damn perfect knife IMO, I’ve always held the opinion that the FRN is fantastic on a user knife and far from the cheap plastic a lot of people expect when they first see it. There’s just so many niches Spyderco attempts to fill. It’s essentially an Endela with a choil or a backlock LW PM2. Maybe not perfect for everyone but perfect for my uses.

Awhile ago I did a top 10 Spyderco video before I got my stretch. Right now I would probably put it at the #2 spot behind the gayle Bradley 2. Thanks for watching

Just sounds like you had a weak detent. You can adjust that by adjusting the compression lock or the detent ball hole in the blade which ever way that’s needed for you to prevent that from ever happening. I am handyman and constantly going up and down and contorting in all positions and moving all over the place with things rubbing against my pockets where the knife lays and not my primary or secondary carry ever open. The shaman, the pm2 and pm3 all perform flawlessly and I even have one of them in sweats or gym shorts at softball/baseball and basketball and when at the gym and never not once have I had a blade open in the pocket or fall out the pocket and defeat the pocket clip from spyderco to mxg and lynch clips. Besides compression locks slay a back lock all day everyday. Push button, axis (or axis style locks), shark locks, and probably even the spyderco ball cage lock all funner imo than integral locks, frame locks, liner locks and back locks but what do I know. I like to hard use every and any knife I own and sharpen/tune/modify myself and I play with knives so much fidgeting my wife will say “enough with the damn knife” 😄🤣😄

The Stretch original model and the Stretch 2 are great knives with outstanding Ergonomics. Always preferred them over the Para Military 2, the Manix 2 would be my second choice…

Compression lock is NOT stronger than a back lock but is stronger than a liner lock.

Yeah even close. Backlock is way stronger than compression.

Yeah u can tell this guy is new. Lot of the new guys assume the compression lock is stronger. It’s stronger than a liner lock like u said. No biggie, we’re all here to learn

Nice comparison. I’ve been trying to decide between these two knives for months. I’m old school, so I’m leaning towards the back lock.

There’s only one right answer…and that’s to buy both! Which I’m about to do!

I also prefer the Stretch 2 in K390 over the PM2. I also don't mind backlocks, in this case the K390 is buttery smooth like my Delica and Endela K390's. Maybe it's the steel(?). The ergos are really nice with chamfered FRN, good traction and can easily be sanded down if the edges are too sharp. Thinner blade stock with embedded steel liners makes the Stretch like a Delica on Steroids. The stock clip was retired, purchased deep carry long version direct from LynchNorthwest, very happy overall!! Great Video, thanks.

The SS stretch is more ergonomic and slicier…even the showpiece, nishijin, xl, “why would you ever cut with this crazy thing” model is a laser. The PM2 blade is a little heftier and it’s available in more formats and steels. If you like the straight spine stretch, you have very limited options as of 2023. If you like the PM2 and you’re willing to hit the secondary/aftermarket, you can have essentially any combination you want from 52100/carbon fiber to maxamet/linen micarta. Despite the limited material availability, I can’t recommend the k390 and xl stretch 2 enough. Combined, they’re my favorite lock backs of all time, no question.

I own both, PM2 in S45VN and that Stretch 2. I actually like the Stretch 2 more ! Only thing is that I'm used to the Native 5 backlock, wich is 100% secure with no play, and the Seki backlocks have the tiniest bit of give, wich triggers my stupidity :)

My Spyderco Police 4 has ZERO blade play, as solid as a Cold Steel and it's from Seki city.. maybe I got lucky?

Thanks for covering these. I am trying to make a decision. Want the crew wear and Micarta. But agree with you on cutting tool attributes going to stretch. Love my Endura in ZDP. Do not mind back lock on Spyderco knives. Have a Gerber gator in 154cm, drop point version. Great hard use knife for me. Love my para 3 LW in BD1N, that’s an unexpectedly excellent Steel (imo). Actually call me crazy but like it better than any S -3,3.5 or 4 series from crucible. I should buy the Stretch and get a better cutting tool AND save myself 35-40$, but I’m probably going to buy the CruCarta and circle back to the Stretch. Thanks for the comparo. Very timely for me.

Good comparison, it would have been better if instead of 2 pm2's you'd have done a 3 way, with an Endura in the mix,, anyway, I've subbed on the strength of this video,, all the best from across the pond,, 😀,, ps,, don't you realise you've got the pocket clip on the wrong end,, ??? 🤣

Great vid. Subscribed! The Stretch IS the better cutting tool, its underrated. I have the old orange Stretch in Hap 40, but the Blue K390 is outta stock everywhere. Hope Spyderco doesn't give up on the Stretch.

@@Oshianis It's in the mail, be here Wednesday. My Stretch has the old-style blade, not straight back and the handle is a bit different. I like K390 so I'm pretty sure I'll like it, as most people do. I always lean to Spyderco, as their heat treats are soooo freaking good!

I think the compression lock is a novel idea but it doesn't feel as fun to me as a liner lock to be honest! Also i think Spyderco releases too many lines with too many similar blades. The stretch/endela/para/military/etc etc etc etc lines should be combined somewhat into the most usable and universally liked blade shape in my humble opinion. No idea why they need to make tiny irrelevant differences that really do not matter. What's the use-case for such differences? Do they perform market research to say this type of person spending this amount of money needs a tiny bit more belly on their knife versus a delica or endela? I understand differences in sizes, but not 50 different variations of the same thing.

Would switching the blade on the PM2 out for the Stretch fit? I like the handle of pm2 but the geometry and steel of the stretch

How is this main screw? It looks much bigger and sturdier on PM2 does it make them less likely bladeplay?
@wigglywrigglydoo
@wigglywrigglydoo Год назад
The compression lock as far as I know, has two main advantages. It's stronger, and the other is that it's cooler than the back lock. But considering all the ways that both the back lock and the compression locks can operate, the only thing that the compression lock can do the other cannot, is that you can swing the blade closed with fingers out of the way, but it isn't the most secure way to operate a knife one handed neither. We're prone to dropping the whole knife, and I guess I'm not the only one that has done it before.

They're rock solid fiberglass reinforced nylon, with full length, nested, skeletonized, SS liners- no plastic in it.
