Eric Glesser breaks down the Spyderco Shaman. Thank you for your continued trust, confidence, and interest in Spyderco and our products. We are honored to serve you. Visit our website at www.spyderco.com
I like your reviews Nick but keeping your interactions with the manufacturers of the products you review at a minimum would give you add credibility. Reviewers who are in the pockets of the manufacturers don’t sit well with most viewers.
It's so cool that the guy running the show at Spyderco gets in front of the camera, talks about and breaks down their products. I really appreciate this. Eric, DM me if you guys want a passionate knife/steel nerd at your Golden plant. I'd even do janitorial work or answer phones to work for such a stellar company... and live that close to Mount Evans. Keep these vids coming!
It says so much that Eric is taking apart one of their products for everyone to see. I’ve got nothing but respect for spyderco. They really seem to love what they do. You guys rock.
Would love to see more of these reviews from Eric. Explaining the rationale behind all the little design nuances makes me really appreciate the blade more, especially coming from a Glesser.
The Shaman in M4 has become my everyday carry. That's a big deal (for me at least) as I've carried a knife everyday for over 50 years. I'm convinced that Spyderco has the best heat treatment of all production knives.
I'm anxiously awaiting my first Shaman, a Micarta scaled M4 model. Such a great design for a hard use, work folder. This is one model that I'd love to see in a fixed blade, maybe with a larger 4.5" - 5" blade in a good tool steel like M4, 3V, etc.
This is my favorite knife. The stretch, manix and twosun’s ts270 are up there as well…but there’s something about the shaman that just makes me happy. I think it’s the beautiful simplicity, comfort in use and fact that, if you needed to, you could really get some work done with it. Specifically the z-wear shaman…if I were forced to sell all of my knives but one, there’s a good chance that would be the last one standing…
My favorite Spyderco (actually my favorite folder overall). Have a few of them, but the Cruwear version with carbon fiber scales (I added) is my EDC back pocket knife. I think if you carry a Shaman, you are ready for any task you may encounter. 💪🏻🧐
Just got it today and for me its the best Spyderco ever! I personally like sturdy heavy folders with a strong tip. So thank u for this great design 👍🏼👍🏼
I love that you do these videos I’d like to see them for all your major knives. Watching reviews is great but to hear why design choices were made from the maker is priceless.
Just a fabulous company to deal with and fabulous products- a company many other companies would be wise to pattern themselves after. I’m thrilled with a new little Chaparral with Birdseye Maple scales- the machining is simply impeccable.. I’ve never been disappointed with a Spyderco. Great value.
I love my Shaman and was surprised when I got it at how heavily it was built. It really is an excellent hard use knife! I also love my lil Native which is my office EDC. I have a lot of Spyderco knives and love them all. Great work guys!
@jdedge i got one! stonewashed would've been great too but now that I have one in my hand I'm very pleased. I feel so lucky to have it and the action is perfect. I'm excited for more versions of the Shaman.
What a fantastic company and a true enthusiast son of the founder. Love you Eric👍🏻🤠 Keep it going forever and ever. Regards from Spyderco fan in Norway. Ps. Fell in love with the knives and the company in the 90' when these knives really found there way into my life from a knife shop owner in Oslo, Norway.
Loving these videos. It would also be cool if you did breakdowns of a little older models like the pm2 or the delica 4 etc. would like to see the perspective and why you designed the knives the way you did/do. Love Spyderco knives
I don’t have one of these but now I’m adding it to my must get list. Thanks for doing these kinda video just bought a para 3 lightweight cause of your other video. Thanks
Big fan of Spiderco knives. For outdoor activities I was waiting for a knife just like this, it has the dimensions, practicality and build quality I was looking for. Great!
Just got my second Shaman today (05/04/2023). Unlike my first one, this one came perfectly centered, had no blade movement and was drop shut out of the box. Loving it. 😊
It truly is a great knife. I own three of them. G10, Natural G10, and the Carbon Fiber versions. Looking forward to the micarta version. Thanks for the video Eric.👍🇺🇲

Awesome. Thanks for this video Eric. Can you please do one with the Manix 2 series, that's one of my all time favorite. It's one of you designs, right?
Hi Eric, thanks for the vid. In Europe there is less of an after market for clips and scales. Any chance you guys will ever produce knives with deep pocket clips from factory? It’s usually the only thing I want to change to my Spyderco’s, but it’s a hastle if you’re living in The Netherlands like me.
Love videos do more please. The shaman is great but....the tip of the forward choil pushes my finger out of the compression lock. This reduces the fidget factor, but also reduces the ease of break in. If I did not have a dlc blade I’d probably grind off an eighth inch or two mm from the most forward part of the choil, just saying. Any suggestions for tuning with attention to this? THX again, Steve
I would love to see a video on the Paramilitary 2 or Para 3, especially the lanyard hole disassembly. There are so many creator content videos on RU-vid making a violent work of the lanyard hole.
I don’t imagine I’ll get a response however it’s worth a try, a friend of mine got a 15V shaman and took it apart and the washers had stayed completely still on both sides via the burrs from the pocket clip holes. The scales weren’t de-burred around the edges of the scales either. Is this normal? Only one side of the tang of the blade from the pivot hole backward had worn in. Is this typical?
There is no doubt the shaman is one of, if not the most beloved spyderco knifes, can we have an explanation as to why there so much priority to produce redundant variants and re-stocks of less popular designs meanwhile the shamans are remain out of stock, with no re-stocks in sight and with no knew variants? Since retail prices have risen by 53% since its release, it can’t possibly be because it’s not lucrative or worthwhile to produce for spyderco, so what’s the hold up, we’re dying for more here! Love the brand, just want to understand what’s the holdup on the phenomenal model.
Are ya'll going to do another run of the Z-wear or equal blade material with micarta ? I missed the last one because I was on the road and my computer was down and that's the one I really want. I refuse to pay $ 400.00 to $600.00 for it on the secondary market. Thank you for all the great Spyderco Knives throughout the years.
I'm glad he forgot the washer, shows it happens to even pros, but I think he did it on purpose to make us mortals feel better. Great video, love my Shaman.
I agree, but it will be at best like the pm2. Only the base model would come in left handed version, all the exciting sprint runs and exclusives would be for right handed folks
What a great knife. Love that Jade one. If you ever have one that is scratched or damaged during manufacturing, I'd be happy to buy it if it's cheaper. Would love have to one. Got 4 kids, Lol. Not much extra money.
When you take that Nub Down so it is not covering your lock bar is so much better and easier to close .I put a coil on myself i am pleased with my shawman . I cleaned the Foster Bronze Washers and polished Them now i can flip reverse flip closes and has a great action ? The shawman is harder to Tune than my Para 2 & 3 are easier to tune .
I love that it doesn't have FRN scales. I love spiderco with g10 scales better it feels right and substantial. Great knife. I'd love to see some marcata scales to some day . I just love Spyderco . Great video.
I just picked up a garden variety shaman in stonewashed. sealed box - first opened, and noticed immediately a LOT of blade play, closed and open... also, and even more concerning to me is there's an interesting thing, I've not experiened with any other folder so perhaps this is just a "spydie" thing, but as the blade on the Shaman reaches almost full extension, there seems to be TWO stages of compression lock... an audible click about 3-4 degrees from fully open, like it's stuck on the bar or something, then finally snaps into fully locked position... so... anyone have any insight to offer - first spyderco - first compression lock - is it a dud? or is that what we get now for north of $200??
The two stages you're feeling is just the detent ball slipping off the blade. The ball slips off and the compression lock bar rests directly against the blade briefly before it slips into the tang cutout and locks. That's perfectly normal. The blade play is not normal. Start by tightening the pivot to see if that helps.
Sorry, Isaiah! Even though we hear this request occasionally, it's not something we're inclined to do. Sharpening choils are something that people either love or hate. It's a lot easier to add one than it is to remove it. :) We've gone into deep discussions about this on our forum. We'd welcome your participation.
@@SpydercoKnivesOfficial That explanation actually makes a lot of sense, it's easier for the buyer to add one if wanted or needed than to grind them in at the factory and alienate potential buyers who would rather not have them.
@@D00MTR33 The little retention ponds on mine are great for organizing the bolts in order of disassembly. Sometimes there are screws that have to go in particular holes due to lengths being different and avoiding action or blade interference.
@@Crusty_Otter they're definitely handy. You can have you pocket clip screws in one section, body screws in another and pivot in another. Plus they protect the finish in your knife. Great piece to have for knife maintenance.
Here's a challenge, Eric. Make an ambidextrous compression lock. What's the point of have four way clip options if the lock is designed for righties only?
Moto Rick : I’d suggest do away with the compression lock all together and give the Shaman the ball type lock like the Manix 2 has. It’d be far superior in my opinion.
Is Sal still with us , I meet him when I came to Colorado. He was a very wonderful guy he treated me like royalty .l still have a prototype knife he gave me for my troubles today I still only buy Spyderco, it's been twenty years since I met him 😊
@SpydercoKnivesOfficial just thought I would tell you that Jami Acker is my niece, small world Doug. Her son Ryan and Kobe have been in school together for years!
Thanks Eric. Can’t wait for that CruWear Shaman. 🔥🔥🔥 Did you get a chance to play with that Peach Designed little Prybar/Knife combo we gave you at BladeShow yet ??
I hear him talk alot about their attention to detail and how they sharpen all the way back to the plunge. Haven't seen one yet that actually is sharpened back to the plunge grind. There's always a dead spot there that isn't sharpened.
