Spyro Reignited Trilogy - Easy Allies Review 

Gotta disagree about the cut-scenes and music. I think both are awesome and quite charming. :)

Damiani, did you toggle into original soundtrack? The common complaint of the Reignited versions are because most of them are generally subdued.

Strongly disagree on the cutscenes before and after each level in two. They give each level extra charm, and they were sorely missed in 3 back in the day. I'm a little disappointed they didn't make new cutscenes for 3 in this collection.

I've never heard anyone call Spyro's music dull, it is widely considered some of the most memorable and catchy game music out there. There is a reason people cared so much about the music, that they added the original soundtrack in. And to say it didn't get any love, it got more love than most soundtracks, even Copeland himself has stated he couldn't believe the amount of work that went in. And that is not even mentioning the dynamic soundtrack, which is also a toggle. But after seeing Damiani stream the game, I realize he never knew about this feature. As late as when he gets to Cloud Spires in the third game, he is wondering why standing still suddenly fades out the drums, not even having explored the options menu. I'm glad to hear he overall enjoyed the games, but the music point just made him lose a lot of credibility when it comes to talking music in games. And yeah, I know it is his opinion, but anyone who has an idea of what goes into creating music would greatly appreciate this amazing soundtrack.

Strongly disagree about the soundtrack. Spyro's music has always been fantastic and Toys For Bob did an excellent job with the remastered tracks. Plus you can toggle to the original tracks which is an awesome feature. I mean, not every track is going to be killer, but I'd say that the vast majority of the tracks in these games are just delightful.

Ok hearing someone say "the music is dull" is really bizarre, considering that the spyro trilogy's music is something that's praised amongst the majority of the fanbase. And you have to imagine that if music in a game has that much of an impact on the kids playing it, that the now 20 year olds bring it up in almost every spyro conversation... It definitely says something about it. I can see someone not being overly hyped about the music, but to have this drastic difference of opinion, completely on the other side of the spectrum, is a bit of a shock. Heck, even Stewart Copeland himself said that Spyro contained some of his best work, and has even used some of the soundtracks in his other works.

Spyro's soundtrack is incredible. Especially the first game's score. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

Hmm "dull tracks". I don't think I have ever heard those words in the context of the 3 first Spyro games. I'm completely baffled. At least 80% of the tracks in each Spyro game are incredibly memorable and great tunes. Now compare that to something like Assassin's Creed that hasn't had a single memorable track in the games since Jesper Kyd never did any of the music since AC Revelations 7 years ago. The exact same thing can be said about Hitman and, again, Jesper Kyd not being there since Blood Money. Those are perfect examples of games with dull soundtracks and the fact that we have something to compare with when they were incredible and memorable.

The original soundtracks is lengendarily written by Stewart Copeland and has lots of weird time signatures like 7/8. In worst case it's an interesting soundtrack

I was legitimately surprised by how much I was enjoying this game. It's a great pallette cleanser after Red Dead. My only gripe is that some of the flying levels are infuriating.

Great review, but like many others in the comments, I respectfully disagree with your thoughts on the music. Might just be nostalgia or how much of a fan you are, but I literally remember every single score from the classic game, and I didn't even realize it until playing through Reignited. To listen to Copeland's music again and realizing that I could hum along to each track was such a cool experience playing through the first few levels, and I find the music far more interesting than in a lot of other games these days. If anything what bugged me about the game was the camera, as you pointed out, and that the Dragons often gave advice regarding how to kill enemies that you already have had to kill in order to save them- doesn't make any sense giving tips to stuff you've already figured out. Besides that, I enjoyed your review, agreed with a lot. I do think it needs to be applauded on how true they've been to the original. It really felt like a true remake, where things are only improved on slightly and not completely altered or overdone.

Anyone else recall hearing about "new orb challenges" for Spyro 2? What happened to that?

The biggest negative with this game is that the physical version doesn't have all 3 games on the disc...just the first game. Why why why?!

I mean, Spyro 1 has an OST probably on par with Ristar and Headdy in terms of classic platformers, but OK. The sequels are quite solid as well and certainly better than almost any PS2/Xbox/Gamecube-era Platformer OST. Gimme that Dark Hollow all day, every day.

I do agree about the camera, it gave me trouble during the boss battles.

Guess Damiani isn't a fan of the police? 😅 Soundtrack is easily up there with the likes of Banjo and Mario though

The thing that shouldn't be overlooked in this game is how much the new artistic choices - not only the updated graphics, but the style they chose for said updated graphics added to the experience, alongside the great animations. I agree that the games have dated a bit gameplay wise, however they ooze so much charm that playing these games remastered is like playing for the first time. It's really the remaster whose graphic updates add more to the experience and thus, the most justified remake I've ever played. SotC's new style was ugly, and Crash's new style (with the ugly realistic fur etc), coupled with the new lazy animations that were way inferior to the ps1 classic, made the remake actually the inferior version. IMO Spyro's remaster is leagues above Crash and a template on how to remake cartoony games going forward

I don’t know what soundtrack Damiani was listening to when he reviewed this, but it couldn’t have been the original tracks because those are some of the best soundtracks in any platformer that doesn’t star Mario or Donkey Kong. I’m genuinely confused and befuddled.

One very concerning thing is that the disk is incomplete and needs about 15GB to download before you can play it. And I read somewhere that the TOS for Activision says they are not responsible for the product once the online download is discontinued. This along with no subtitles. Just hoping that a PC version arrives that is a complete download.

I had to replay "the soundtrack is dull" like 5-6 times because I was convinced I was hearing the reviewer wrong

But the music was amazing

You can clearly tell the reviewer either never played the originals or only sampled the first Spyro for a couple hours. I don't remember anyone who had any problem with any part of the original series. If anything this remaster is a perfect 10/10 because it doesn't try to change what the original was. It's just an enhanced experience by the graphics and only minor quality of life upgrades like fast travel in all games. I still have my original copies that I purchased new, no scratches and played for years. I'm thrilled by this remaster as its the first remaster done correctly. Too bad the remaster of Splinter Cell on PS3 wasn't good for example as they rewrote how some missions played out, and changing the game isn't a remaster, its a reinterpretation. This is one remaster to be proud of us all of us who grew up with this series can now share it with the new generation and have faith they'll experience the same game we did.

No disrespect, is it just me, or does it seem like reviews that Damiani writes seem to have alot of backlash for something the court of public opinion usually disagrees with him on? Everyone went crazy on his Zelda review for not being a 10, and I pretty much fail to see a single comment agreeing with him on the soundtrack and/or cutscenes.

I disagree on the cutscenes if I’m honest. They were in the originals and as a kid they made me laugh, a lot. Also the music is still some of my favorite in gaming both new and old, but that’s very much so an opinion.

I need a new game to play since this coronavirus gots me stuck at home. Will I like this if I loved all the other 3D platformers? I loved Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Poi, A Hat In Time, and Yooka-Laylee.

Is no one seriously going to mention the removal of the chest and diamond animation during the loading screen? I was so pissed when I saw a bland number beneath Spyro who can move and spew flames but come on, that animation is an integral part of the series.

People who are disagreeing with the soundtrack are I think taking what the reviewer said out-of-context. He is referring to the "remastered" soundtrack, not the Copeland soundtrack. I do have to agree to an extent. Whilst a lot of it is good, some of the tracks are a bit hit or miss. Some do amplify what the original sounds did but others fall a bit flat. It will all come down to personal taste in the end for a lot of you. My biggest complaint with the Reignited Trilogy was how Spyro handled during a lot of the races, especially in speedways and skateboard race challenges. Because of how tight the controls feel, Spyro moves much faster than he did in the original trilogy. Because of this, you can end up over compensating when it comes to doing tricks or trying to pass through a ring on the speedways which lead to many frustrating moments where the game sent me teetering off the rails. That said though, this is still at its core the remakes I think we have all been waiting for. Whilst there are things I miss about the originals (e.g. how enemies used to sound), Toys For Bob have put so much detail into these games that any nitpicks I have are far outweighed by the positives. It's a great set of games that any Spyro fan should pick up as well as introduce new spyro fans to. In the words of Sgt. Byrd: "It's good to be back in action!"

Nitpick, but I'd like it if the industry/writers would someday standardize the difference the between Remake and Remaster. -I was always going by the former as a major rebuilding of the assets and/or level design (Resident Evil 1 & MGS Twin Snakes on Gamecube). -The latter was mostly prominent starting with the PS3/360 era where previously SD games would gain better resolution/textures/fidelity (God of War Collection, FFX+FFX-2 HD Remaster). Even HD games can be improved from PS3 to PS4, as seen with Dark Souls & increased frame rate. This Spyro trilogy seems like a "remake" as far as I can tell.

Bring this to the PC and you'll get my buy just like crash bandicoot... Do the same with the the Jak series (with or without Jak x) and all the old Rachets please, would buy that in a heartbeat.

Damiani, I get it if the comedy in Ripto's Rage wasn't your style, but I don't think you can review those tiny comedic moments objectively. Jokes hit differently for different people, I personally love that stuff and it's part of why the second game is my favourite in the series. Small nitpick I know, but just a gripe I will always have when it comes to any kind of comedy. Great review otherwise though, I definitely want to check out the remaster. Love and respect!

Luckily the game does allow for the player to switch to he original soundtrack. I wish the N Sane Trilogy had that option too, even though its soundtrack for the most part was actually pretty good.

I've never played these games I got Crash but damn that game is move jump die repeat lol I totally forgot how hard they was! I prefer more exploration based platform games like Mario 64 and Sunshine so this looks more up my street I'm thinking?

Never expected from this channel to hear something so unreasonable as complaining about the Soundtrack (the original OST is in there too after all) and about the cutscenes. Don't get me wrong, everyone has their preferences and the right to have their own opinion but man, what a huge mistake to make. It's one of those things that are universally accepted as fact, and opinion is non applicable! Anyway, I still love this channel!

You forgot to mention in regards to the music that you can switch between the reignited soundtrack and the original soundtrack. Unless you have the same opinion about the original soundtrack in which I would have to strongly disagree.

After playing the Crash trilogy, I was totally looking forward to this till I found out about the physical game fiasco. This trilogy will not be future proof for someone like me that loves to play my games 4,5, or 10 years later. Too bad.

When he says the music is weak, I can’t tell if he means it’s weak compared to the originals’ soundtracks or if he just finds them weak in general.

God, imagine the ratchet and clank trilogy getting this treatment, staying with 60fps and the original score... But completely new ue4 graphics. I could die.

Every score the critics give, the fans think this game deserves more? Seriously who’s gonna up it to a ten?

Disappointed at no mention of the actual bad points of this remake: -2/3 of the game aren't on the disk and are download-only. Big con. -the game is capped at 30fps. Although this was in line with the original, I feel like with modern hardware they definitely could have improved this for the remake. The graphics are not that demanding compared to other modern games. -in addition, there are frame-timing issues that can introduce stutter that was not present in the originals. This means gameplay that is actually less smooth than the originals. -many find the liberal use of motion blur to be too much and become destructing. An option to turn it off shouldn't be too much to ask. The music and cutscenes are subjective, but i think these are some of the real negatives that should be addressed. Overall a good remake, but disappointed that this review passed over these important points.

With Smash Ultimate right around the corner, I'm gonna wait for a sale for this game

So they don't care that two of the three games aren't on the disc?!?! Making you download the second two games is deal breaker for collectors, when the servers go offline there will be no way to download these games.

All these releasing remakes and FFVII is still in development hell.
