i would hardly call the soundtrack mediocre... it features so many remixes of older tracks and the new ones are distinct, memorable and catchy

It should be noted that the game runs at 60fps on the PS4 Pro and One X, which makes platforming noticeably more responsive than previous iterations. Solid game.

I still keep laughing that the swamp monster is just casually called Louise. I couldn’t focus when I first had to fight it from laughing so much.

Good review guys, but I do want to point out that Crash doesn't actually control like he did in the PS1 games at all. There's a number of subtle, but very significant changes - you have more air control, can belly flop after a double jump, spin in the air and jump again after, etc. That's all new. He definitely controls better than before.

I really enjoy the idea of a "modern sequel to a retro series". I will certainly pick this one up once I have the funds, memory space and hardware power for it!

They forgot to mention that this game is quite difficult. Reminds me of the first one, enjoying it thoroughly!

Something I haven't seen brought up much is the is the completionist's route. It was touched upon here but clearly from the video Damiani wasn't attempting to collect all the boxes. Boxes are hidden off screen on basically every level, and the grind sections are essentially trial and error to grab every box. For anyone trying to get all the gems, this is where the flaws truly start to appear in all the gameplay types. As someone who has 100% the original trilogy and N.Sane trilogy, I ended up giving up because of the serious frustration it was bringing. Having to spend roughly a half hour trying to hit every box in a polar bear level, jumping of the edge 10 or so times per grind section, or having to re-go through a level multiple times because there is one of 200 boxes that blends into the background and is only slightly visible if you stand at the edge of the screen in a particular spot (which is basically every level) really puts a sour taste in your mouth.

Glad to see the problems were explained better here than they were in IGN's review. Although i think it's a hard disagree on the music.

Played it to death Friday and Saturday and loved every minute of it (except a couple of levels that were more annoying than fun). The level design is way better than the original 3, I really enjoy hunting for all gems when back in the day I wouldn't really bother with anything other than just finishing the levels. Game can be pretty hard at times and that was really refreshing from a mainstream title (meaning a title that's not designed with punishing difficulty in mind like let's say Super Meat Boy) but I never really ran out of lives. By the time I got all gems from all levels up until the China levels, I was already maxed out with 99 lives. I don't brag about my skills, it just feels like for every live you lose the game will give you 4-5 more if you are a moderately decent player.

Thanks 4 the great review, I was eagerly waiting for it, I was little afraid earlier after seeing that the game has changed a lot, new design, new mode, new masks, new abilities ,wall run, rope jump, new bosses, new playable characters, new wrap rooms, after seeing the game announcement earlier, In my humble opinion the charm of crash is nowhere to be seen or to be felt with, just watch how crash 2 differs from crash 1, crash can slide and smash and that's it, crash 3 bring bosses abilities and some kind of new levels designs and that's it. There's too many changes in crash 4, that's just remind me of crash of the titan ,which I completed & love because that was the only crash available by that time, instead of crash 3, and I simply don't want that, saddly after seeing the review, the bigger share in my heart will always be for the 1st 3 games plus ctr, because of the core simplicity of the game. At last the developers did a great job, because the game turned out to be a success, I wish them luck in their future works.

Also yo saying the soundtrack is mediocre... bro what that soundtrack was fantastic

The Crash Bandicoot game's were always very difficult to complete , especially if you wanted to get 100% completion... Each new game's developer that took on making one of these Crash Bandicoot game's knew to keep the gameplay fun but also as difficult as possible to complete the further into the levels & chapters you to got to... I have not got round to buying this yet as i like to complete the game's that i already have & since i know this is a game that at somepoint i'll lose my temper because of how difficult i know it will be , im in no rush... There were a few games that at the time were insanely difficult to beat & get 100% on the original PlayStation & the Crash Bandicoot game's along with the Abe's Oddworld game's could & would cause many gamer's to throw & break their control pads , the reason i know this is because i managed in the retail side of video game's & gamer's were honest to admit why they had come back into the store to buy another control pad as they trashed their controllers playing game's like Crash & Abe... Don't be fooled by the sweet graphics & the slightky added change in gameplay & i'd suggest you buy the Insane Trilogy first if you have not played any of the Crash Bandicoot game's before as the Trilogy will give you an indication of what you'll be playing in Crash Bandicoot 4 but if you so feel the need to buy Crash Bandicoot 4 you'll be in for a shock awakening as though these seem like cute character's the difficulty level is not to be ignored... This is a game that newbies & hard core completionist will.have a hard time finishing & i like this as at least your getting a game with a lot of content & the Crash Bandicoot games have always challenged you to get better and better with each new level... Another incentive to buy the Crash Bandicoot Trilogy first , if you've never played any Crash Bandicoot game's , is that those 3 in 1 game's should be cheaper to buy a physical copy & will go on sale more often on the online digital downloadable sites of Steam/Microsoft Store/Sonys PSN Store & Nintendo's Switch online store... Absolutely great game's that have stood the test of time but are very difficult complete & get 100% on... Enjoy... Great game, and I didn't particularly care for the original trilogy. 2 was a good game but I was indifferent about 1 and 3. 4, however, is a legit great platformer.

I find it extremelly disrespectful when a reviewer calls the story of a game as "nothing special" just because is a game aimed at younger audiences. The story and personality in Crash 4 is easily one of the best in the franchise, and it deals with time travel and time paradoxes without leaving much plot holes, something that isn't very easy to do.

This is how you treat a classic. The best plaformer on current gen by far.

Coming off of Elden ring, this game is considerably more frustrating. Some of the bonus levels require ridiculous feats to acquire all the boxes. I found it more agitating than rewarding.

tbh the retro mode wasn’t needed as you get too many lifes that i capped my lifes pretty early. Even though this is probably the hardes game in the series i never got a game over.

Shame about the music. So many catchy tunes from the 3 originals. The 3OG’s music seems to really highlight one instrument for each level, maybe they’re making it too generic with MANY instruments being used? So glad the gameplay appears true to form.

Just finished it. Despite the fact that the game almost made me lose my mind due to its unnecessary difficulty, I'll still give it a 10/10 due to its brilliant level design and probably the best art direction in the series. I hope a sequel is in the works with the difficulty turned down

I would hardly call the soundtrack 'mediocre'. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion. It's taken from the original Crash games and remixed for the modern era.
